  • ‘Made by Aliens’? Corn Actually Descended From Wild ‘Teosinte,’ Study Confirms

The theory that “corn can’t reproduce on its own, so aliens must have made it” sparked a thread on 5ch’s Science News+ board about the history of crop breeding. According to the article, corn’s actual ancestor is a closely related wild plant called “teosinte,” and starting around 7000–9000 BC, humans repeatedly selected individuals with larger kernels, eventually shaping it into the corn we know today. In response, commenters piled on with other examples of “plants that spread without producing seeds,” citing bananas, bread wheat, and Japanese narcissus.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
The pre-mutation parent, and the birth of a new mutant creature
Once this offspring has mutated so much that it's considered a different thing from the parent,
it's no longer called an offspring — it's the birth of a new species (the emergence of a starting point) → that's the argument for 'chicken first'
The same thing happens when humans surpass humanity and become a new species
and a species distinct from Homo sapiens is born

Isn't the mutation actually happening at the point of fertilization?
That's the argument for 'egg first.'
Well, if you can't tell at the egg stage, then you could also say it's not the chicken but the chick that comes first.

Bananas don't produce seeds either, so you have to propagate them by dividing the plant. Actually, they're easy to peel, and the unpeeled part conveniently doubles as a handle.

    Re: #4
The reality is more low-key than that
Once a banana plant has fruited, that same stalk won't fruit again, so you cut it partway down and later pull it out. Then a new shoot sprouts up nearby.

Japanese narcissus doesn't produce seeds either, so it only spreads by bulb division
It's a sterile triploid variety formed when a normal diploid crossed with a mutant tetraploid.

The crew of the crashed craft were 120cm tall
It takes 100,000 years for a 50cm height mutation from 170cm to occur
So the crew of that craft must be humans from 100,000 years in the future

How did it turn into this?
    14AnonymousAug 24, 2026 07:48

    >>Corn, once rumored to have "come from outer space," has now — thanks to recent DNA research — been traced back to a wild ancestral grass called "teosinte," a group of closely related wild plants in the grass family.

    >>Corn began to be improved by humans around 7000 to 9000 BC. The earliest corn had very small kernels, but by repeatedly selecting and replanting individuals with larger kernels over thousands of years, it's said to have become the corn we know today.

    >>"Nightshade family plants contain toxins, but the tomatoes and eggplants we eat today use varieties with low toxin levels in the edible parts. That's because low-toxin strains were selectively bred. That's how humans have improved plants."

    >>Napa cabbage × cabbage = 'Hakuran'

    >>Crops aren't just the product of human selection. New species can also arise through natural crossbreeding. Take bread wheat, the raw material for bread, for example.

    >>"Bread wheat came about when Tausch's goatgrass (Aegilops tauschii, which looks like an ordinary grass) naturally crossed with a cultivated variety close to durum wheat — the kind used in pasta — likely growing in the same field. Because it turned out to be so useful to humans, it came to be cultivated all over the world."

    22AnonymousAug 24, 2026 09:41
Wheat originally was a variety whose seeds shattered and fell off easily. That was a problem at harvest time since the grain would just drop off, so barley and other grains ended up as the main cultivated crops instead.
But then a mutant variety appeared whose seeds didn't shatter, and that's what spread to become what we grow today.
If that mutation had never happened, we'd be eating rolled barley or porridge instead of bread.

The megafauna (giant animals) that swallowed avocados' huge seeds whole and carried them far away, sustaining the species, went extinct roughly 13,000 years ago. Notable examples include giant ground sloths (Megatherium), giant armadillos (Glyptodon), and gomphotheres (ancient elephant relatives).

    Background and Key Points

Teosinte, corn’s wild ancestor, still grows across Mexico and Central America and looks almost nothing like a modern ear of corn: its kernels number in the single digits, encased in a hard shell, spread along a thin, easily shattering spike. Archaeological and genetic evidence puts the start of its transformation at roughly 7000–9000 BC, as early farmers in Mesoamerica repeatedly chose plants with larger, softer kernels over thousands of years. That timeline predates the pyramids of Giza by millennia, which is part of why the “aliens made it” theory keeps recirculating in Japan as a piece of internet folklore alongside stories like the “corn grandma” (トウモロコシばあさん), an urban legend about a woman killed to protect the plant’s origins that one poster alludes to.

The thread didn’t actually litigate the alien claim — commenters mostly dismissed it outright and called it a writer’s invention — and instead split on what “can’t reproduce on its own” should even mean. Some read it as true asexual propagation, citing bananas and Japanese narcissus, both of which are sterile and spread only by division of bulbs or corms. Others pointed to bread wheat and the napa-cabbage/cabbage hybrid “Hakuran” as cases of natural cross-species hybridization, which is a completely different phenomenon from clonal propagation.

What the thread never quite nails down is that corn does produce viable seeds — kernels are seeds — so it isn’t asexually propagated like bananas or narcissus at all. Its real dependency on humans comes from the husk: domestication tightened corn’s ear casing so much that kernels can no longer scatter and self-sow, unlike teosinte’s shattering spike, so someone has to physically remove and replant them.

You really think an exec like that would be hanging out on a trash-tier board like this?

    Background and Key Points

Hello! Project is Up-Front Group’s umbrella idol franchise, home to Morning Musume, ANGERME, Tsubaki Factory, and the newer Juice=Juice, all managed under one label with shared TV ties dating back to the “Hello! Morning” era on TV Tokyo. Commercial casting for Japanese idols usually flows through ad-agency and network relationships rather than open pitching, which is why posters compare Hello! Project unfavorably to AKB48/Sakamichi groups: producer Yasushi Akimoto’s background at Dentsu, Japan’s dominant ad agency, gave those groups a pipeline Hello! Project never had. The cited example, Airi Suzuki appearing on the Ministry of Finance’s “kojin-muke kokusai” (individual government bond) campaign page, is worth flagging: individual bonds have used idol or actress spokesmodels for years as a trust-building device aimed at ordinary savers, and it’s a public-sector placement, not the “big corporation” ad the thread’s title is actually begging for.

The thread doesn’t converge on one explanation. Some posters treat it as simple meritocracy: Juice=Juice now outsells the other units, so naturally gets what little work exists. Others push back that even Juice=Juice only landed a short web spot rather than a TV commercial, undercutting the “monopoly” framing baked into the headline. A third strand blames structural access (agency connections, TV Tokyo’s limited reach) rather than popularity at all.

What’s easy to miss: Airi Suzuki, the headline example, isn’t a Juice=Juice member — she’s a C-ute alum working solo — so the thread’s own evidence doesn’t actually support its “only Juice=Juice gets cast” claim, a contradiction none of the posters address.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Big corporations, please cast Hello! Project members in your commercials.”

Yamazaki herself played dumb, saying “Did I really say it like that?” but Sakurai blew her cover, revealing “It’s on video lol,” and fans are loving the gap between her usual self and this side of her.

The thread expanded into discussion of how the normally soft-spoken Mei-san (Yamazaki’s nickname) only gets seriously fired up over being called “Panda,” as well as the genuine side of her that makes her so well-liked by her juniors.

It runs on a strict senpai-kohai (senior-junior) hierarchy, and one of its main promotional tools is cheap, frequent short-form video — YouTube Shorts, TikTok clips, and variety segments like the “D-Maga” show referenced here — built specifically to let fans see members’ off-camera personalities, a fan-service aesthetic often called “gap moe,” the pleasurable shock of a idol’s public persona clashing with a rougher private one. Nicknames are central to this fandom: members get individual nicknames, and fans (and members themselves) fuse two nicknames into a portmanteau — “Zakimei,” “Meirii,” “Raigeta” — to mark a close off-stage bond, much like shipping names elsewhere, except applied to real documented friendships rather than fiction.

The thread doesn’t actually disagree about whether the moment is funny; it splits on whether Yamazaki’s “Panda” outburst is a genuine, involuntary trigger or a bit that younger members like Rairii deliberately provoke on camera because it makes for better content — posts explicitly raise both readings without resolving which is true.

What a non-Japanese reader could easily misread is the word “scary.” The thread uses it approvingly, pairing it with “kind,” and compares Yamazaki to two former Morning Musume leaders remembered fondly for exactly that gruff-but-caring combination — this is affectionate shorthand for a protective elder, not a description of conflict or hazing. Also unaddressed by any poster: why “Panda” is the trigger nickname in the first place — its origin is simply never explained.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Yumigeta: “I Called Mei-san ‘Panda’ and Got a Scary ‘Oi… Did You Just Call Me Panda?’” — Yamazaki: “Did I Really Say That?” — Sakurai: “It’s on Video lol”.”

  • Seikima-II Bassist Zenon Ishikawa Oshō Undergoing Treatment for Illness — Will Skip Aug. 29 Kumamoto Show

Zenon Ishikawa Oshō, bassist of the “demon rock” band Seikima-II, revealed on the group’s official website that he is currently undergoing treatment for an illness, and it was announced he will not perform at the August 29 concert at Kumamoto Castle Hall. On 5ch, the thread lit up with jokes about his “100,000-and-something” age setting, fans hunting for the masked members’ real faces, and nostalgic reminiscing from the late-night radio generation.

    8/24 (Mon) 18:05

The rock band Seikima-II updated its official website on the 24th, announcing that bassist Zenon Ishikawa Oshō has fallen ill and is currently receiving treatment, and that he will not appear at the Kumamoto Castle Hall concert on the 29th of this month.

The band’s official site stated: “We have an important announcement for everyone. Seikima-II bassist Zenon Ishikawa Oshō has fallen ill and is currently undergoing treatment.”

    It's stretched to 100,081 now.

    Background and Key Points

Seikima-II formed in 1982 as a self-described “demon rock” band, performing in full corpse-paint-style makeup and never breaking character in public: each member holds a “Demon World” rank (Denka, Kakka, Chōkan, Sanbō) and a fictional age in the tens of thousands of years, a bit sustained for over four decades on Japanese TV and radio, including Demon Kogure’s well-known late-night radio show that shaped a generation of Shōwa-era listeners. Zenon Ishikawa’s title, “Oshō” (a Buddhist priest’s honorific), fits that same in-character device, and the band’s official announcements lean into the lore too, framing member deaths as members “returning to the Demon World.”

The thread doesn’t really divide into opposing camps; it moves between two registers on the same news. One is pure gag material, riffing on the gap between an illness and a “100,000-year-old demon,” and joking about how the band would eventually announce a death. The other is quieter and sincere: posters from the original radio-listening generation recalling how much the act meant to them, alongside people surprised that the members have real, searchable faces once the makeup and stage name are set aside.

What the thread glosses over is that Zenon Ishikawa Oshō’s title isn’t just in-universe flavor text — he is in real life an ordained Buddhist priest, which is why that particular stage name was given to him rather than invented from nothing, unlike the purely fictional Demon World ranks the other members carry.

  • Ise Suzuran-Guided Ise Tour Charges ¥33,000, and 5ch Isn’t Having It: ‘Showing People Free Attractions for 30K? That’s Basically a Shakedown’

JR Tokai has opened registration for its “Ise Full-Enjoyment Monitor Tour” featuring Hello! Project idol Ise Suzuran as guide, and the ¥33,000 price tag sparked debate on 5ch’s Hello! Project thread.

Opinions split over whether the fee is justified: the tour is meet-up-on-site, which all but requires arriving the night before, and it includes no two-shot photo session, no live show, and no handshake event. Some call it overpriced; others say that’s just normal for a meet-on-site tour.

    15AnonymousAug 24, 2026 17:06

    21AnonymousAug 24, 2026 17:11
Thinking about it rationally, ¥30,000 with no two-shot and no event is steep
    26AnonymousAug 24, 2026 17:21
Since it's meet-on-site, ¥5,000 would be the fair price for this
    27AnonymousAug 24, 2026 17:21

    30AnonymousAug 24, 2026 17:24

    61AnonymousAug 24, 2026 17:52
Price-wise it's about half of a typical bus tour, so for a day trip it doesn't feel totally out of line
But factoring in there's no two-shot, no live show, and no handshake event, it does feel pricey
    62AnonymousAug 24, 2026 18:02
They should be handing this kind of gig to their flagship group Juice=Juice instead
    67AnonymousAug 24, 2026 18:44
    Is Hana-chan coming?
    69AnonymousAug 24, 2026 18:48
    Re: #67
Nope, not coming — Goto (playing off the tour's Ise-dialect catchphrase)

    Background and Key Points

Ise Grand Shrine—split into the outer Gekū and inner Naikū and rebuilt every 20 years in a Shinto rite called shikinen sengu—is one of Japan’s holiest sites and costs nothing to enter, as do the other stops on this itinerary: Futamiura’s wedded rocks, the Chokokan history museum, and the Okage Yokocho shopping street outside the shrine. JR Tokai, the railway that runs the Tokyo–Nagoya–Osaka bullet line, periodically pairs these regional promotions with Hello! Project idols to drive tourism traffic, and it’s using Ise Suzuran, a member of Hello! Project whose stage name literally puns on the city’s name, to front this one. The tour is billed as a “monitor tour,” a discounted-fare format where a company gathers consumer feedback in exchange for a lower price, which is part of why fans expected it to be cheap.

The thread’s disagreement wasn’t over whether ¥33,000 is a lot of money in the abstract — it’s over what that price is supposed to buy. Posters who called it fair were pricing it as a normal bus-tour day trip; posters who called it a “shakedown” were pricing it against fan-event norms (two-shot photos, handshake lines, a live set), none of which this tour includes, and against the fact that every listed stop is free to the public anyway. A third group just noted the meeting point effectively forces an overnight stay near Ise, since no same-day train from Tokyo arrives in time — making the real cost of attending considerably higher than the sticker price once travel and lodging are added in, a point the thread raised but never priced out.

*This article is an excerpt and summary compiled from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Notice: Registration Open for “JR Tokai’s ‘Come On Over to Ise’ Campaign Presents: Ise Suzuran Guides You! Sacred Site Pilgrimage — Ise Full-Enjoyment Monitor Tour”.”

The “celebrity” itself is never named in the segment, but posters converge on cosmetic surgeon Dr. Katsuya Takasu, an over-80 TV fixture famous for eccentric on-camera eating habits (he runs a YouTube channel, “Shimofuri-Tube,” and has a son, Mikiya, who is also a doctor and media personality) — worth flagging as informed guesswork, not confirmed fact. The backdrop that matters for non-Japanese readers is Shinkansen food culture: eating elaborate meals on Japan’s bullet trains is completely normal and even celebrated, built around ekiben (regional boxed lunches) and local specialty snacks sold at every station — nobody bats an eye at food on board, unlike in many countries.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t food-on-train per se, but smell etiquette: whether a Big Mac’s odor is more or less acceptable in a shared car than infamous “loud” foods like 551 Horai’s pork buns, and whether framing this as classy at all sets the bar too low. A second split is what’s actually impressive — his ordinary taste despite wealth, or simply that someone in their eighties can still put away a full fast-food meal.

What the thread misses: no JR rule actually bans bringing outside food aboard (one poster’s “banned” claim goes unverified and is directly challenged) — this is pure social etiquette, not regulation.

    Switch 2 versions

    100AnonymousAug 25, 2026 02:19
    Re: #96
    No way Metaphor hits that
It was already choppy in the trailer
And even P3R (Persona 3 Reload) runs at 30fps

    Background and Key Points

Lies of P (Round8 Studio, an Obsidian/PSY Neowiz subsidiary) originally launched in 2023 on PS5, Xbox, and PC; a Switch 2 port with selectable Quality/Balanced/Performance modes now puts it alongside a growing wave of ninth-generation ports (NBA 2K, Madden, Persona/Metaphor-family titles) coming to Nintendo’s new hardware. The Switch 2 launched in June 2025 at ¥49,980, well under a PS5’s roughly ¥79,980 (or ¥119,980 for the Pro), a price gap posters repeatedly used to argue that a “cheaper” Switch 2 running comparable framerates is a bigger win than raw power comparisons suggest — especially once you factor in Sony selling the PS5 disc drive as a separate add-on.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t whether Switch 2 can port PS5 games at all — everyone agrees it can — but whether “PS5 quality-mode graphics at Switch 2’s best settings” is actually comparable to “PS5 performance-mode at 60fps,” and by extension whether 30fps ports should be waved off as broken while PS5 hardware itself (including the Pro) is quietly excused for unstable or variable framerates. That argument stalled because nobody offered per-title benchmark data, only competing anecdotes about which platform “usually” hits 60.

What the thread misses is that both consoles ship the same basic tradeoff: dynamic resolution and variable frame-pacing are common design choices on any console aiming for 60fps in a demanding engine, not a defect unique to one platform. It’s also worth noting a “key card” (like the one for this Switch 2 release) is a download license on a cartridge, not the full game data — a distinction some Switch buyers still aren’t aware of at purchase time.

  • Phone-Use and Drowsy-Driving Detection to Become Mandatory in New Cars from 2031, Japan’s Transport Ministry Says

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has settled on a policy to mandate that new vehicle models be equipped with a “driver monitoring system” that detects and warns drivers who are operating a smartphone or dozing off while driving, starting in 2031. Existing models will also be required to comply by 2033.

On the thread, users debated the resulting rise in vehicle prices from the mandatory equipment, how the rollout compares to the EU, the US, and other countries, the emergence of workaround devices like limiter-removers, and the impact on auto repair shops.

    8/24 (Mon) 14:27 — Jiji Press

MLIT has settled on a policy to mandate, for both domestic and imported vehicles, the installation of a “Driver Monitoring System (DMS)” that detects and warns drivers who are looking away or dozing off while operating their smartphone.

This was learned from an interview with the ministry on the 24th. The ministry will revise the relevant ministerial ordinance in September, applying the requirement to new models from 2031, and mandating installation on existing models still in production by 2033.

    Re: #243
Is that the "aiming" calibration thing?
This is an interior-facing monitor though — is that kind of work even necessary for it?

    Background and Key Points

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) is Japan’s equivalent of a combined transportation/infrastructure department, and it regulates vehicle type approval through ministerial ordinances rather than standalone legislation — hence the plan to “revise the ordinance” in September rather than pass a new law. The requirement stems from a UN regulation adopted by the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP29), the body that sets international vehicle standards Japan is a signatory to; the EU already mandates comparable driver-monitoring and drowsiness-warning systems under its General Safety Regulation, which is why posters framed Japan as “just falling in line” rather than innovating. The 2031/2033 split (new models vs. models still in production) is standard MLIT practice for phasing in equipment mandates without forcing an abrupt halt to existing production lines.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t safety versus surveillance — it was cost. Posters largely accepted the technology’s premise but argued past each other on whether Japan is uniquely burdened (ignoring that the EU and US face the same mandate) or whether China’s cheaper implementation will undercut everyone regardless of the rule.

What’s likely to be missed: driver-monitoring cameras aren’t new technology being introduced from scratch — Subaru’s DriverFocus and Toyota’s systems on the Noah/Voxy have shipped for roughly five years already, cited by one poster as evidence that “limiter-removal” workaround devices, unlike speed limiters, haven’t materialized for these systems. The article also doesn’t mention what specifically triggers a stop versus just a warning, which varies by manufacturer and remains undefined by MLIT at this stage.

  • New Akita Stadium: Mayor Numatani to Submit Master Plan Budget Bill to August City Council

Akita City Mayor Jun Numatani has announced that a supplementary budget bill for drafting a master plan for J.League club Blaublitz Akita’s new stadium will be submitted to the city council session opening August 31. The club explained that it now has a prospect of raising nearly ¥100 million from private sources — but on 5ch, commenters were quick to point out this is merely a “prospect,” not money actually “raised,” with many questioning how realistic the funding plan really is.

Regarding development of the new stadium that will serve as the home ground of J2 club Blaublitz Akita, Akita City Mayor Jun Numatani revealed on the 24th that a supplementary budget bill for drafting the master plan will be submitted to the August city council session.

Mayor Numatani made the announcement to Blaublitz Akita President Kosuke Iwase and others, who had come to report on the season opener.

Mayor Numatani stated clearly that he will submit the supplementary budget bill for drafting the new stadium’s master plan to the August city council session, set to open on August 31.

The reason Akita Prefecture has so many baseball stadiums seating over 10,000 is that baseball fever runs high there — it ranks among the top prefectures nationally for stadiums per 100,000 people — and stadiums with a certain seating capacity were built at general parks across the prefecture to host top-tier pro baseball games (played regionally) and large-scale national/regional tournaments in rotation.

Every top-tier (first-team) official pro baseball game held in Akita Prefecture since last year (2024-2026) has been a home game for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, held at Komachi Stadium (Akita Prefectural Baseball Stadium) in Akita City.

This isn't technically false, but it's misleading. Both the prefecture and city are moving forward on the assumption that Blaublitz Akita raises ¥500 million. 78AnonymousAug 24, 2026 21:26
The prefecture and city jointly develop and own it
The private side raises about 50% of the development costs

    Nobody's putting money into that
You pay half the cost, and in the end the prefecture and city own it
On top of that, upkeep and management costs fall on the private side too
    Would you invest in that?

Best you can do is pray Akita BB has no chance
Though personally, I don't think there's a J2 club out there that couldn't scrape together ¥500 million from here
    105AnonymousAug 24, 2026 22:02
    Re: #101
That's exactly why they don't need to raise it
You pay half the money, and everything still ends up belonging to the prefecture and city, and on top of that you're stuck paying upkeep and management costs
Maybe they'll even keep paying property tax and usage fees forever too

Just pretending to raise the money is enough
    106AnonymousAug 24, 2026 22:02
    Re: #101
This isn't "stadium built after raising ¥500 million" lol
In this soccer-fanboy-beloved (サカ豚) stadium plan, raising that money only gets you to the "candidate site under review" stage lol

    Background and Key Points

Blaublitz Akita play in J2, one tier below the J1 clubs whose stadiums usually get built through prefecture-city joint financing with baseball as the local benchmark. Akita is a baseball prefecture in a very literal sense: it has six stadiums seating over 10,000, built across different cities so they can rotate hosting national high-school tournaments and the occasional Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles game (Eagles being the regional NPB team, based in neighboring Miyagi). Those venues are public infrastructure, paid for as general park projects going back decades — nothing like the private-capital model J.League now expects of a new club stadium. That gap is the backdrop for this story: the prefecture and city are willing to co-own and help build a Blaublitz stadium, but only if the club’s side raises roughly half the cost.

The thread’s actual disagreement is not about soccer versus baseball culture, but about the word “prospect.” The club announced a prospect of nearly ¥100 million from private companies, and commenters split over whether that phrasing signals real progress toward the ¥500 million private-funding threshold the project needs, or is essentially non-news dressed up to look like momentum.

What the thread doesn’t spell out clearly for outsiders is scale: ¥100 million is only a fifth of the ¥500 million target, and even hitting that full amount wouldn’t fund construction — under the current scheme, raising it merely qualifies the project to advance to site-selection review, while the prefecture and city would still end up owning the finished stadium, with upkeep and management costs left to the private side.

  • Uehara Koji’s Picks for “Top 3 Aces Since the Heisei Era” — Saito Masaki, Saito Kazumi, Tanaka Masahiro — Spark Debate

Uehara Koji naming Saito Masaki, Saito Kazumi, and Tanaka Masahiro as his “Top 3 Aces Since the Heisei Era” became a hot topic on 5ch.

In the thread, commenters pushed back one after another in favor of Nomo Hideo, Darvish Yu, and Yamamoto Yoshinobu, opinions split over whether an “ace” should be judged by win totals or by quality of pitching, and the conversation eventually derailed into a debate over NPB’s popularity in the 1980s.

Nomo, Darvish, and Yamamoto, right? 😅

    Re: #6
Even pitchers who supposedly get "zero run support" rarely actually get zero — usually they get handed a 1- or 2-run lead and immediately cough it right back up. Kanamaru's the textbook case.
    11AnonymousAug 24, 2026 22:19
More than anything, my image of an "ace" is the guy who's the top of the rotation for years, going head-to-head with the other team's ace over and over — Nomo, Matsuzaka, Darvish, that type. In that sense, I didn't watch it live, but Egawa in '81-'82 was insane — he kept facing the other team's #1 starter nonstop and completed almost every game.

    Re: #17
People were sick of the Giants dominating everything during their V9 run — once the tables turned and Hiroshima rose up, players outside the Giants started getting nationwide popularity too. The late '70s through the '80s were the golden age of NPB popularity.

    24AnonymousAug 24, 2026 22:36
Saito Kazumi really only had 2 full seasons though. You can't put him in the same tier as Saito Masaki or Tanaka Ma-kun. Honestly Uehara himself would be more deserving. Is this guy tough on others but underrates himself too?
    74AnonymousAug 24, 2026 23:16
    Re: #24
It's about substance, not stats. Saito Kazumi WAS the word "dominant" in pitcher form. I also think he's the number one since Heisei.

The Big Five aces: Nomo, Darvish, Ma-kun, Yamamoto, and Matsuzaka
    30AnonymousAug 24, 2026 22:44
The fact that Imanaka gets brought up as another candidate suggests people are going more by the "image" of an ace. But if that's the criteria, I'd think Darvish should qualify even more.
    75AnonymousAug 24, 2026 23:17
    Re: #30
Darvish doesn't even have a league-leading win total. Even Aoyagi has won it twice.

During the Giants' V9 era, the Pacific League was basically treated as a punching bag reserved for the All-Star Game and Japan Series — about as unpopular as it gets.

    Re: #36
Kudo I get — he was a genuine ace for Daiei. But with Yamamoto Masa, you just can't shake the "second option" feel. Part of that's on the Chunichi Dragons too, honestly, since you can name better pitchers than him for pretty much any stretch of time.

    Re: #91
Same goes for Togo and Yamazaki Iori. Though Togo looks like he might be bouncing back this year.

    Background and Key Points

Uehara Koji is himself one of the pitchers this question is really about: a former Yomiuri Giants and Rakuten ace who won the 2002 Sawamura Award (NPB’s Cy Young equivalent) before reinventing himself as a closer in MLB, most famously nailing down the 2013 World Series for the Red Sox. The “Heisei era” he’s ranking spans 1989–2019, the stretch in which NPB shifted from a self-contained league into a pitcher pipeline for MLB. His three picks: Saito Masaki, the Waseda “Handkerchief Prince” of the 2006 Koshien final who became Nippon-Ham’s ace; Saito Kazumi, a Giants right-hander remembered for an extremely short but statistically overpowering peak; and Tanaka Masahiro, who went 24-0 for Rakuten in 2013 before joining the Yankees. The names posters wanted instead — Nomo Hideo, who broke the posting-system path to MLB in 1995, Darvish Yu, and current Dodgers ace Yamamoto Yoshinobu — represent a more MLB-facing, “faced the world’s best” idea of what an ace is.

The thread’s real fault line is definitional: does “ace” require a heavy win total (the camp that disqualifies Darvish, who never led NPB in wins, and doubts Saito Kazumi’s two-season peak), or does it mean pure dominance regardless of longevity or run support? That same split is why commenters kept nominating Uehara himself even though his list excludes him.

What’s easy to miss without NPB background: the 1980s tangent is a Central League vs. Pacific League argument in disguise — the Pacific League drew poorly and was treated as a sideshow outside the All-Star break and Japan Series, while the Giants kept national ratings high even after Oh and Nagashima retired. The thread also never mentions that Uehara’s list conspicuously snubs Matsuzaka Daisuke, his long-time rival, which several posters clearly read as a pointed omission rather than an oversight.
