  • Not Just Bic Camera—TSUTAYA Also Launches PS4/PS5 Clearance Sale With New Copies Up to 80% Off

    Following Bic Camera, reports on 5ch say TSUTAYA has also kicked off steep discounts on PS4/PS5 software. According to a poster who visited a store in person, new copies aren’t just 80% off — some are down to 100, 300, or 500 yen, with a sign on the shelf reading “Clearance sale due to trading card corner expansion/renewal.” The thread split between those who see this as a de facto sign of Sony pulling back from physical PlayStation sales, and those who dismiss it as simple shelf reorganization to make room for trading cards — the debate spilled over into discussion of Sony’s push toward download-code-only sales.

    They're just prepping the sales floor for the switch to download-code sales a couple years out, phasing out physical packaging
    Do you Nintendo fanboys (ブーちゃん, a mocking nickname for Switch loyalists) really think this counts as anti-PS ammunition?
    Whatever doesn't sell will just keep sliding down over time — 20% off → 50% off, 50% off → 80% off, 80% off → 500 yen
    and with about a year and a half left until then, it'll all be cleared out

    If it's just a corner for selling paper download codes, one section is plenty
    The leftover space will just become more Nintendo shelf space

    Re: #13
    Sony doesn't actually wholesale download codes to retailers though, so there's nothing to sell
    It's PS Store exclusive
    Third parties would have to put out their own boxed releases with paper codes inside themselves
    In practice, PS's shelf space disappears from retail stores entirely

    Re: #24
    When Sony first announced the move to consolidate everything into downloads, they said outright that you'd still be able to buy download codes at retail stores, so customers could keep shopping there
    Chains like TSUTAYA don't get to design their shelves based on individual staff preference — they move on orders from head office
    If head office says "Sony's asked us to push code sales," the stores on the ground will have to build a proper code section, no question

    Retailers aren't slaves, you know
    TSUTAYA's PS sales were strong because of the synergy with DVD rentals — paper codes kill that synergy
    And obviously you can't resell them used either
    Paper is a particularly bad fit for TSUTAYA specifically; it's obvious things get worse compared to the disc era

    I saw this thread and went to my local TSUTAYA — it wasn't just 80% off, they had new copies marked down in tiers at 500, 300, and 100 yen
    Looked like it had already been picked over, not much decent left…
    But for 100 yen a new copy, I figured it's basically just the cost of a case to swap onto my scratched-up used copy and make it look new, so I grabbed a few of what was left

    https://tadaup.jp/8Aimo7M3.jpeg

    As far as I remember, what else was left included: Sword Art Online for PS4/PS5 at 500 yen, Exoprimal and Custom Mech Wars for PS5 at 300 yen, a Demon Slayer limited edition at 500 yen, and a soccer game at 300 yen
    The sign on the shelf read "Clearance sale due to trading card corner expansion/renewal"
    My guess is the space freed up from clearing that stock won't go toward expanding the Switch section — it'll just become more trading card space

    Background and Points of Contention

    Sony has been gradually scaling back physical packaging in favor of download-code sales, and retail shelf layouts are easily affected by that shift. What split the thread was the reason behind the sale: one side saw it as a sign of PlayStation pulling back and losing market share, while the other dismissed it as nothing more than routine shelf reorganization to make room for trading cards. It’s worth noting that TSUTAYA has reportedly been struggling across multiple lines of business — rentals, CDs, DVDs, and books — so this sale may be less a PlayStation-specific issue than part of a broader contraction of the store’s overall business. It’s also worth mentioning, as background that doesn’t come through in the thread replies alone, that Sony once tried and then abandoned the idea of selling download codes through retail before, so it isn’t as simple a decision as it might seem.

  • Taiga Drama ‘Toyotomi Brothers!’ Draws Protest From Taketa City Over Nakagawa Kiyohide Portrayal — 5ch: “Sticking to the Facts Wouldn’t Be Fun”

    In NHK’s taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers!,” Taketa City in Oita Prefecture and Ibaraki City in Osaka Prefecture — both linked to Sengoku-era warlord Nakagawa Kiyohide, said to have fought bravely and died in battle at Shizugatake — jointly sent NHK a written statement on the 28th protesting that the show’s portrayal is “far removed from historical fact.” The drama reportedly shows Kiyohide attempting to betray Hideyoshi before begging for his life, a major departure from the accepted account that has stirred controversy. On 5ch threads, opinions split over how much dramatic license should be tolerated — defenders saying “it’s fiction, so it can’t be helped,” versus critics arguing “turning a warlord who died in battle into a traitor is going too far.”

    8/29 (Sat) 11:00 — Oita Godo Shimbun

    Regarding the portrayal of Sengoku warlord Nakagawa Kiyohide in NHK’s currently airing taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers!,” Taketa City in Oita Prefecture and Ibaraki City in Osaka Prefecture — both connected to Kiyohide — jointly sent a written statement to NHK on the 28th, saying the depiction is “far removed from historical fact” and that they “cannot help but feel regret.” While acknowledging that dramatic staging and embellishment fall under “freedom of expression,” the two cities asked that “works based on historical subjects respect accurate historical fact as much as possible.”

    Kiyohide was the father of Nakagawa Hidenari, first lord of the Oka Domain, which included present-day Taketa City. He was also castellan of Ibaraki Castle, located in what is now Ibaraki City. In the 1583 Battle of Shizugatake, where Hashiba (later Toyotomi) Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie, Kiyohide fought on Hideyoshi’s side. He defended the Oiwayama fort but is said to have died in battle after being attacked by Shibata’s general Sakuma Morimasa.

    Well, what history tells us is ultimately just what can be read out of surviving records —
    we won't know what really happened unless someone invents a time machine,
    so I think some degree of dramatic license in a drama is fine.

    But when a warlord who, by the accepted account, fought bravely to the end and died in battle
    gets turned into someone who begged for his life and betrayed his lord — that's a bit much.
    It's only natural for people connected to him to think, "why drag his name through the mud like that?"

    It's not even a part that affects the main thrust of the drama's story much,
    so it's a mystery why they threw in this unnecessary change.

    Re: #736

    It's probably so that holding the line until Hideyoshi's return could be credited entirely to Hidenaga, and to make Maeda's betrayal look milder by comparison.

    Background and Key Points of This Topic

    Nakagawa Kiyohide is a warlord said to have defended the Oiwayama fort at the Battle of Shizugatake and died in battle after being attacked by Sakuma Morimasa’s forces; he was the father of Nakagawa Hidenari, first lord of the Oka Domain. The drama reportedly depicts a scene in which Kiyohide tries to betray Hideyoshi, then begs for his life before being killed — a major departure from the accepted account of him “dying in battle after fighting bravely.” Opinions split in the thread over how much dramatic license should be allowed in a taiga drama, with the debate centering on whether the change touches the honor of a real historical figure. Past taiga dramas have included plenty of invented material too — such as the circumstances of Azai Nagamasa’s death — but changes that contradict documented achievements tend to draw backlash from those connected to the figure involved. Some also pointed out that records show Kiyohide’s descendants received an increase in fief from Hideyoshi in recognition of his achievements at Shizugatake, casting doubt on the “betrayal” theory.

  • Hakata Daikichi Slams “Kita no Kuni Kara” Lead as “I Really Hate Him” — Hanamaru Agrees

    On the August 27 broadcast of BS Asahi’s “Ie-nomi Kadai,” Daikichi of the comedy duo Hakata Hanamaru & Daikichi sparked buzz by declaring he “really hates” the main character of Fuji TV’s classic drama Kita no Kuni Kara (“From the Northern Country”), calling him “way too selfish” — with Hanamaru agreeing. In the resulting thread on 5channel’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, users debated the show, now more than 40 years since it first aired, from every angle: whether the one-off specials or the original serialized drama are better, how to tell the characters apart, the pervasive sense of hopelessness running through the story, and how odd the series looks to actual Hokkaido residents.

    Hakata Daikichi Speaks Out Against That Classic Drama! Says the Lead is “Downright Hateful,” “Way Too Selfish” — Hanamaru Agrees

    Since August 27, the day of the broadcast, happened to be “Otoko wa Tsurai yo Day,” the conversation turned to Mitsuo — the nephew of Tora-san, the hero played by the late Kiyoshi Atsumi in the beloved film series Otoko wa Tsurai yo (“It’s Tough Being a Man”) — and from there to Hidetaka Yoshioka (56), the actor who played Mitsuo.

    Background and Discussion Points

    Kita no Kuni Kara (“From the Northern Country”) is a landmark work by screenwriter Sō Kuramoto that began as a serialized drama in 1981, followed by a string of one-off specials produced intermittently through 1992; it’s known for tackling heavy themes like poverty, infidelity, and family strife. In the thread, opinions split over whether the show is “emotionally manipulative” or “a hopeless, unflinchingly real portrait of human nature,” with some pointing out that the tone shifted between the early serialized drama and the later specials. Hokkaido residents also chimed in, saying the idyllic, city-eyed view of rural Hokkaido the show presents feels off to anyone who actually lives there — a sign that even decades after it first aired, opinions on the show remain far from unified. Posters also spent time correcting each other’s memories of characters like Sota and Shokichi, giving the thread the lively feel typical of a long-running series’ fandom.

  • Guess the Game From 3 Hints: 5ch Thread — “A Beetle Hint for Mushiking? Way Too Easy”

    A quiz thread was heating up on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, where a questioner doles out three hints one at a time for others to guess a game title, and whoever gets it right takes over as the next questioner. Titles ranged from famous names like Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear Solid to more nostalgic picks like Mahjong Fight Club, Wonder Momo, and Ishtar no Fukkatsu (The Return of Ishtar), with participants either nailing the answer instantly or agonizing over it. The thread also saw pushback on the hints themselves, with comments like “A beetle hint for Mushiking? Way too easy,” sparking discussion about how hard it is to pitch the difficulty just right.

    Background and Talking Points

    This format is a classic 5ch VIP relay game: the questioner drips out three hints, and whoever answers correctly sets the next question — with no fixed host or moderator, it’s an entirely self-organizing bit of fun. The titles that came up spanned generations and genres, from console classics like Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear Solid, to older arcade and PC-8801-era games like Wonder Momo, Pooyan, and Ishtar no Fukkatsu (The Return of Ishtar), to more niche fighting and puzzle titles like Mahjong Fight Club and Clock Tower. The thread’s big talking point was how to calibrate hint difficulty: commenters contrasted the overly easy case where “beetle” alone gives away Mushiking with tougher cases like “movie, theme park, picking up trash,” which are unsolvable unless you already know the genre — sparking debate over how hard it is for a questioner to strike the right balance. Note that this article excerpts only part of the posts; the thread itself is an ongoing relay and doesn’t include a final conclusion.

  • Is Life Fun Past 40 and Single? 5ch Split After ‘Not Fun At All’ Post

    A thread titled “I want to ask those over 40 and single — is life fun?” appeared on 5ch’s Hello! Project chat board. Replies started off heavy, with comments like “Not fun at all” and “Even my oshi-katsu (fan support activities for idols) started to feel empty, so I quit.” From there the discussion spread to married posters venting, philosophical debates over why people go to the gym, and even calculations of retirement pensions. The thread split over questions like whether devoting yourself to a hobby while single makes you a “loser,” whether working out is really just overcompensating for insecurity, and whether a pension alone is enough to live on in old age.

    At 60 my income drops to less than half, and if I keep up my current lifestyle by chipping away at my meager severance, I'll have zero savings by the time I start collecting my pension.
    After taxes that pension will probably come out to around 120,000 yen a month.
    Finally get to enjoy being unemployed, only to live in dire poverty — guess I'll just retire from life itself after about 2 years. Goodbye.
    203AnonymousAug 29, 2026 23:43
    Re: #179
    You can start collecting your pension at 60, right?
    It gets cut by 24%, but someone who starts at 65 doesn't catch up to someone who started at 60 until their 80th birthday.
    Even if you draw down 50,000 yen a month from savings on top of your pension, that's only 600,000 yen a year.
    If you keep working until 65 while collecting your pension and save up 6 million yen, you won't have money troubles until 75.
    There's inflation and stuff to consider, but still — what exactly is that "20 million yen" the government keeps talking about even for?
    I feel like once you're past 65 there's barely any big expenses left anyway.

    Background and Key Points of This Discussion

    Japan’s employee pension (kosei nenkin) is designed to start payments at age 65 in principle, but if you claim early starting at 60, the amount is reduced by 0.4% per month, for a maximum reduction of 24%. The calculations cited in the thread follow this system, so they aren’t baseless numbers. That said, pension amounts vary widely from person to person depending on enrollment period and income, so it would be premature to apply one poster’s example directly to your own retirement planning. The other major topic — “why lift weights” — was discussed with a mix of motives all tangled together, from maintaining health to overcoming personal complexes to acquiring physical intimidation in social situations, without ever settling on one conclusion. As for the relationship between being single and life satisfaction, the thread simply lines up anecdotes from married and single posters side by side; no statistical backing is offered, so readers should keep in mind that this stays firmly in the realm of personal impressions.

  • Are buy-to-play games still fun? 5ch says: “Free mobile games are easier and better value”

    On 5ch’s hardware/industry board (nicknamed “Geha”), a thread titled “Aren’t buy-to-play games not really all that fun anymore?” sparked an ongoing debate between fans of free mobile games and fans of premium, pay-once titles. The free-mobile-game camp defended their side by citing games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, pointing to how easy daily quests are, the sheer volume of story content, and strong value for money. The buy-to-play camp countered that their games cost less than a single gacha “pity” pull yet let you play without restrictions, that you’re not chained to daily chores, and that there’s no artificial difficulty inflation designed to push players toward gacha spending. Opinions also split over how to classify free competitive shooters like Apex Legends and Overwatch, and the thread never reached a consensus, ending in a stalemate.

    Honestly, free mobile games are easier and better value.
    If it's story-driven, falling behind is actually a plus — the story never runs out, and no matter how many gacha stones you collect, you never run out of those either. It's basically perfect.

    Genshin especially.
    27AnonymousAug 29, 2026 19:55
    Re: #20
    Can't speak for Genshin, but as far as Star Rail goes, the gameplay itself is just average — nothing great, nothing bad, so take your turn-based-RPG complaints elsewhere.
    What's surprising is the sheer volume of quests, and how dense the story is. Some side quests are more substantial than what you'd get in a buy-to-play game, and some even have full voice acting on par with main-story quests.
    The main story is genuinely good too — it really does live up to its reputation as the poster child of mobile RPGs.

    >How do you explain free games like Apex, Valorant, eFootball, Overwatch, and Delta Force?
    >They're clearly more fun than stuff like Splatoon or Mario Tennis.

    Competitive shooters were already the dominant genre on both PC and PlayStation to begin with (Overwatch sold something like 60 million copies even as a paid game) — most of them just went free-to-play afterward. It's a wide-and-shallow monetization model: play for free, but buy skins if you want your character to stand out. The gameplay itself still comes down entirely to player skill, exactly the same as any paid game.

    That's a completely different animal from "gacha games," which sell through gambling-style gacha thrills and story padding designed to keep you pulling — even though both are technically "free games."
    Steam has plenty of free games too, but a market so embarrassingly dominated by "cute-girl Chinese gacha games" that they hog the entire top of the charts is really only a thing on the Japanese PlayStation market.

    Background and Key Points of This Discussion

    As background, in recent years the PC gaming market has seen Chinese-made gacha-driven mobile games (like Genshin Impact and Star Rail) increasingly dominate the top of the sales charts, and this thread appears to have been started in response to that trend. The debate split into two main camps: one arguing that free mobile games win on value since they’re free to play and packed with story content, and the other countering that buy-to-play games can be played for a flat one-time fee without being tied to daily routines, and don’t have their balance artificially inflated just to drive gacha spending — the two sides never found common ground. One point worth clarifying, since it’s easy to misread: several commenters noted that free competitive shooters like Apex Legends and Overwatch run on a completely different revenue model and style of play from the gacha-monetized “ソシャゲ” (mobile gacha games) that were the thread’s actual focus. It’s also worth noting that the PC sales-chart screenshots cited as evidence of a title’s popularity were challenged as just a snapshot from a period when few premium titles happened to be releasing, leaving room for debate about how meaningful that popularity comparison really is.

    In Central League action on August 29, the Hanshin Tigers cruised to a 4-1 win over the Yomiuri Giants, with starter Ohtake pitching six scoreless innings and timely hits from Sakamoto, Motoyama, and Oyama backing him up. The win extended Hanshin’s streak and lit their “magic number” to 23, while Giants starter Masahiro Tanaka took the loss after allowing three runs, extending Yomiuri’s own losing skid. On 5ch’s Geinosuposoku+ board, the thread split over the two clubs’ history of hit-by-pitches, opinions on manager Tomoyuki Fujikawa, and posts comparing the franchises’ business scale.

    'If only' talk is embarrassing

    Background and Talking Points

    Hanshin’s “magic number drops to 23” refers to a stat unique to Japanese baseball: the combined total of Hanshin wins and Giants losses still needed for Hanshin to clinch the pennant — the lower the number, the closer they are to the title. The thread’s main point of disagreement was the history of hit-by-pitches between the two teams: posters cited concrete figures showing the Giants have hit the most batters this season (54) and Hanshin the fewest (34), but whether either side’s hit-by-pitches were “intentional” remains speculation on the posters’ part. Some also brought up the old story of Masayuki Kakefu breaking a bone after being hit by a pitch, though the details rest on posters’ memories and aren’t independently verified. Likewise, the posts comparing Hankyu Hanshin Holdings and the Yomiuri Group by ordinary income and revenue cite no sources, so those figures haven’t been independently confirmed either.

    ※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinosuposoku+) thread “[Baseball] Central League T 4-1 G [8/29] Hanshin’s win streak lights magic number to 23, Ohtake 6 scoreless innings, timely hits from Sakamoto/Motoyama/Oyama, Giants lose again, Tanaka allows 3 runs.”

  • Fable’s Combat Footage Draws Harsh Criticism — Even Developers Weigh In

    A video showing combat from Xbox’s upcoming open-world RPG Fable was posted to X (formerly Twitter), drawing a wave of harsh criticism such as “enemies show zero hit reaction at all.” An account believed to belong to an overseas developer also responded to the clip, pointing out that the basic combat system doesn’t seem to be functioning properly. Since the footage was being discussed alongside the PS5-exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine, it also became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry board, sparking pushback like “does it even make sense to compare these when the genres and gameplay are totally different?” and “isn’t that boss just wearing super armor?” — leading to a split in opinion.

    Background and Key Points of the Debate

    Fable is an upcoming Xbox-exclusive open-world RPG, while Marvel’s Wolverine is a PS5-exclusive, linear action game. To begin with, the two differ fundamentally in genre, controls, and design philosophy, and as commenters in the thread pointed out, it’s inherently unreasonable to judge a combat-focused action game and an RPG built around exploration and dialogue by the same standard. As for the clip showing “enemies don’t flinch” that drew criticism, pushback emerged noting that the target was likely a boss-tier enemy built with a “super armor” design that resists staggering from ordinary damage — making it premature to declare the entire combat system “unfinished” based on a single clip. The footage shown is also likely from a build still in development, leaving room for adjustments before release. It’s also worth keeping in mind that, in the context of console rivalry, Fable is an easy target to line up against a buzzworthy title on a competing platform.

    ※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Console War)) thread “[Sad News] Fable’s Combat Is So Much Worse Than Wolverine’s, It’s Blowing Up Online lolololol.”

  • Uniqlo’s ¥3,990 Pants Declared ‘Cringe Old Man’ Wear — 5ch: ‘I Don’t Care What Pants Other Guys Wear’

    An interview in a fashion magazine in which stylist Yoshiyuki Morii singled out Uniqlo’s ¥3,990 wide-leg pants as a “landmine item that’s an instant fail if an adult chooses it” became a hot topic on 5ch’s News Express+ board. The thread split between people brushing it off with “I don’t care what other people wear” and those conceding “now that you mention it, yeah, that is lame.” Quite a few replies also pointed out the discomfort of judging men’s fashion purely by women’s opinions, and the reality that in regional cities there are barely any men’s casual clothing stores left, forcing people to rely on Uniqlo.

    What should men watch out for in their weekend outfits? Stylist Yoshiyuki Morii says, “You need to be careful when choosing today’s popular wide-leg pants. For example, Uniqlo carries plenty of trend-conscious pants for men, but among them are landmine items that are an instant fail if an adult picks them.”

    Background and Key Points of This Discussion

    Articles like this “fashion landmine” piece follow a familiar formula — scoring men’s clothing based on anonymous women’s opinions — and skepticism about that method surfaced in the thread too (post 210). In truth, “the voice of women” with no identifiable source can’t be verified, so it’s left to readers to decide how far the article’s claims can be generalized. There’s also the point (post 33) that in regional cities, brick-and-mortar men’s casual stores have dwindled, leaving Uniqlo or online shopping as the only real options — reflecting a shift in retail structure rather than mere taste, and the reason pants so often need to be re-hemmed. Overall, the thread split between an “I don’t care what others wear” camp and a “there’s dress appropriate to your age” camp, with both sides drawing a fair amount of support.

    *This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “[Fashion] Turns out it’s worse for your reputation with women than shorts… Uniqlo’s ¥3,990 pants that instantly get you branded a “cringe old man”“.

  • Japan Overtaken by South Korea and Taiwan in Export Value — 5ch: ‘Japan’s Nothing But Armchair Critics’

    A Newsweek Japan article reporting that South Korea and Taiwan both surpassed Japan in export value in the first half of this year sparked a lively economic debate on 5ch’s News Speed+ board. Opinions flew over the causes — the hollowing-out of the semiconductor industry, the pros and cons of the weak-yen policy, and a corporate culture that has long valued sales staff over engineers. Still, it wasn’t all doom and gloom: some argued this is just a temporary blip driven by AI-related demand, and that Japan’s exports will pick up again around 2028.

    The news that both South Korea and Taiwan outpaced Japan in export value in the first half of this year felt to me like salt rubbed into a wound. A hundred and forty years ago, Fukuzawa Yukichi called for Japan to “leave Asia” (his famous Datsu-A Ron essay), and Japan went on to dominate the region. Chastened — or rather, forced to repent — by its wartime defeat, Japan then poured capital and technology into its Asian neighbors and led their development. So has Japan now lost its standing in every respect?

    But let’s not wallow in self-pity. During its high-growth era, Japan owed much of its growth to exports. Today, South Korea’s exports amount to 44% of its GDP, and Taiwan’s to 65%. Japan’s figure, by contrast, is only 23% — partly because its overall GDP has grown so large. In other words, as long as Japan can maintain its trade balance through exports of the goods where it still holds an edge — machinery, materials, electronic components — and keep the yen’s value stable, it can focus on boosting living standards through domestic demand instead.

    In this new era, where not just South Korea and Taiwan but the ASEAN nations too have grown stronger, Japan needs to graduate from its old mindset of obsessing over preserving its ‘family headship’ in Asia. In short: Japan should stop putting on airs in Asia, and instead take on the role of a kind of ‘coordinator’ standing shoulder to shoulder with the region’s increasingly similar, increasingly modern nations.

    Japan just shifted from exporting to local production because of the super-strong yen from the Plaza Accord and the DPJ government's policies.
    Toyota and Sony get mistaken for American companies these days — they're basically reimporting stuff they made overseas.

    Jim Rogers, one of the world's three most famous investors, warned that "Abe's economic policies will wreck Japan's future."

    Rogers:
    "Abenomics is nothing but a facade of prosperity. Japanese stocks are only trading higher than before because the Bank of Japan is printing money like crazy and using it to prop up Japanese equities and government bonds."

    "Ironically, that's great news for investors like me, but Abenomics will never succeed. Abe's policies will wreck the future of Japan and its children. Someday people will look back and say, 'Abe ruined Japan.'"

    And it took exactly ten years for that to come completely true.

    Japan's labor shortage is only going to get worse, yet it's so slow to adopt technology that would reduce headcount needs — that's the big contradiction here.

    * Paper
    * Hanko stamps
    * Excel
    * Fax machines
    * Manual data entry
    * Phone calls
    * Human double-checking
    * Double- and triple-checking everything
    * Ancient legacy core systems

    So many idiot companies are still doing this stuff.
    Executives and managers are, across the board, complete morons.

    Stop it! Automate! Mechanize!
    Barely any higher-ups are willing to say that.

    Too many fools just want to keep doing things the way they've always been done.

    So it's fine as long as it's Google Sheets instead of Excel?

    What's funny is China's the exact opposite — they've got a labor surplus, yet they're going all-in on robots, AI, and self-driving tech.
    They must be ready to write off a few hundred million people.

    How does Japan get overtaken on exports even with a weak yen?

    Re: #630
    It means Japan doesn't have anything people actually want to buy anymore.

    Re: #630
    If anything, it's precisely because of the weak yen.
    Last year Japan's export value hit an all-time high — but that's in yen terms.
    Looked at in dollar terms, though, Japan's export value has actually declined, not grown, ever since the Abe government's weak-yen policy began. That's the weak-yen magic trick.
    The idea that a weak yen alone boosts the international competitiveness of Japanese products is just an illusion.

    Neighboring countries are desperately investing in next-generation industries, while Japan keeps doing idiotic things like this because of its poorly-educated career politicians.

    Stuck faithfully to the doctrine, huh.

    Background and key points of this debate

    The article’s premise rests on a structural difference: Japan’s exports amount to only about 23% of GDP, compared with South Korea’s 44% and Taiwan’s 65% — both far more export-dependent economies. In the thread, an optimistic view that exports will recover once new plants like Rapidus’s come online from 2028 onward stood alongside a more pessimistic take that treats the corporate culture’s neglect of engineers and slow policy decisions as structural problems. On the question of “why is Japan losing on exports despite a weak yen,” some pointed out that while yen-denominated export value hit a record high, it hasn’t grown in dollar terms — a reminder that a weak yen doesn’t automatically translate into stronger export competitiveness, a nuance that’s easy to overlook.
