The story
An interview in a fashion magazine in which stylist Yoshiyuki Morii singled out Uniqlo’s ¥3,990 wide-leg pants as a “landmine item that’s an instant fail if an adult chooses it” became a hot topic on 5ch’s News Express+ board. The thread split between people brushing it off with “I don’t care what other people wear” and those conceding “now that you mention it, yeah, that is lame.” Quite a few replies also pointed out the discomfort of judging men’s fashion purely by women’s opinions, and the reality that in regional cities there are barely any men’s casual clothing stores left, forcing people to rely on Uniqlo.
What should men watch out for in their weekend outfits? Stylist Yoshiyuki Morii says, “You need to be careful when choosing today’s popular wide-leg pants. For example, Uniqlo carries plenty of trend-conscious pants for men, but among them are landmine items that are an instant fail if an adult picks them.”
■ The “new wardrobe staple” pants men tend to get wrong
“You don’t see men in skin-tight pants around town anymore, do you.”

What people said
Lame old dude.
Women of every generation are just scoring men.
Guys don't need to care — worst case, every woman just thinks you're lame.
What kind of gross clothes are you wearing, then?
I don't care how I'm seen.
Agreed
I couldn't care less about the opinion of some brat with zero taste or style who just slaps on cheap clothes to chase a manufactured trend.
Please stop with the "see-through bangs" (thin, wispy bangs styled to look sparse)
They just look like a balding, thinning hairline.
How closely are you even watching people?
That's kind of creepy.
I bet even Konomoto of the Hanshin Tigers (pro baseball player known for his meticulous prep) studies things closely enough to get looked at that way.
Aren't you being a bit naive, lol?
The classic look you see all over Aeon Mall (a big suburban shopping mall chain) lately is exactly what's getting bashed here lol.
But there are all kinds of women out there too.
Well, that whole 'anonymous woman's voice' or 'viewer Q&A corner' format is obviously just made up copy.
It's a trick — if you state the opinion yourself you get called out as a hypocrite, so you cushion it by pretending 'some anonymous person said this!' instead.
Sure, there are all kinds of women, but every single one who *doesn't* think "ugh, cringe…" is dressed weird herself.
An old guy in gross clothes is unsightly, disgusting…
Middle-aged guys are inherently sloppy-looking,
so wear slacks, tuck your shirt in, and put on some clean dress shoes.
Otherwise it's online shopping, but then there's the pants-length problem.
Yeah, pants need tailoring anyway.
I really think shutting down Ito-Yokado (a general merchandise/department store chain) was a mistake.
No other brand pitched such a straightforward, no-nonsense lineup.
If you're good-looking, it's "stylish" ✨
Couldn't care less.
In your 20s you can still pull it off on youthful momentum,
but once you hit 30 or so, it gradually starts looking lame.
Wide pants, no good.
And now you're telling me skinny ones are no good too?
At this point maybe wearing pants at all is the problem?
Just wear normal ones.
It's old guys pulling off cringe moves like kiddie shorts or acting young in skinny jeans and baggy pants that gets them called creepy in the first place.
Why not?
I do both — what's wrong with it?
Seriously recommend tengu geta 👺 (tall, single-toothed wooden sandals associated with the long-nosed tengu goblin)
Why not just wear thick-soled shoes like the young kids do?
This is supposed to look cool? I just don't get it anymore.
The one on the left is about the only acceptable one.
Lame.
Well, the fashion crowd has always looked lame to ordinary people anyway.
The middle one is the old-school "yankee" look (a rebellious, delinquent-style fashion) that used to get called lame.
Put a red or purple top on it and it'd be perfect.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
Articles like this “fashion landmine” piece follow a familiar formula — scoring men’s clothing based on anonymous women’s opinions — and skepticism about that method surfaced in the thread too (post 210). In truth, “the voice of women” with no identifiable source can’t be verified, so it’s left to readers to decide how far the article’s claims can be generalized. There’s also the point (post 33) that in regional cities, brick-and-mortar men’s casual stores have dwindled, leaving Uniqlo or online shopping as the only real options — reflecting a shift in retail structure rather than mere taste, and the reason pants so often need to be re-hemmed. Overall, the thread split between an “I don’t care what others wear” camp and a “there’s dress appropriate to your age” camp, with both sides drawing a fair amount of support.
