Fable’s Combat Footage Draws Harsh Criticism — Even Developers Weigh In

The story

A video showing combat from Xbox’s upcoming open-world RPG Fable was posted to X (formerly Twitter), drawing a wave of harsh criticism such as “enemies show zero hit reaction at all.” An account believed to belong to an overseas developer also responded to the clip, pointing out that the basic combat system doesn’t seem to be functioning properly. Since the footage was being discussed alongside the PS5-exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine, it also became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry board, sparking pushback like “does it even make sense to compare these when the genres and gameplay are totally different?” and “isn’t that boss just wearing super armor?” — leading to a split in opinion.

Xbots (Xbox fanboys) said Fable's combat is better than Wolverine's…
Yikes!

I genuinely can't believe something like this got shown to the public…?

The basic combat system just isn't working here at all. Even if this is a boss fight, it's completely unacceptable for an enemy to show zero hit reaction.

Re: #4 is that a game developer, lol

If even actual game developers are calling it out, it must be pretty bad lol

Re: #4
From what I've checked, regular mob fights have normal hit reactions just fine — this boss just has super armor (a status that stops it from staggering from weak hits).
Honestly, not knowing what super armor is makes me wonder if this guy's ever played a game in his life
8AnonymousAug 29, 2026 22:51
Nah, as an RPG this actually looks pretty fun?

What I don't get is why Wolverine looks so boring by comparison
Maybe it's the dark color palette?

Re: #8
Setting aside the "whoa the graphics!" or "that direction is so cool!" factor — if you can predict what's coming next, or it undershoots expectations, it starts to feel boring
66AnonymousAug 29, 2026 23:10
Re: #8
Wolverine looks varied on the surface, but really it's just a bunch of finishing-move animations layered over basic flailing
26AnonymousAug 29, 2026 22:58
Fable's a game about enjoying role-play, and combat action isn't really its main focus
Wolverine's whole main focus IS action gameplay
so it's fundamentally different from a game where that main element is shaky

Re: #26
True, and I can't really argue with that, but that's a pretty blunt way to put it

Re: #26
Exactly this
Different genre, different expectations
109AnonymousAug 29, 2026 23:33
Isn't Fable coming to PS5 too?
Why is it being used as a target for negative comparison against Wolverine?
112AnonymousAug 29, 2026 23:33
Re: #109
It's NOT coming out, that's probably why people are losing it
153AnonymousAug 30, 2026 00:08
Wow
No matter how shoddy an Xbox-made game is, the defenders always show up
Having so little presence that it has no "enemy" is invincible in its own way (a pun — 敵/teki, "enemy," plays off 無敵/muteki, "invincible")
154AnonymousAug 30, 2026 00:12
Re: #153
Well, Wolverine is completely linear with nothing to do but fight, and if that fighting is just weak arm-flailing…
160AnonymousAug 30, 2026 00:21
Re: #153
It's less that Xbox gets defended and more that PS games get absolutely trashed hard enough to drown out any defense
They're usually on the attack from every direction, so the moment they show even a whiff of being a bad game, they get piled on instantly
172AnonymousAug 30, 2026 00:40
The graphics are good and the animation is good, but the reactions when attacks connect just don't match the action, and it feels really off

Where, lol
Do you only ever play Nintendo games or something?

Re: #174
I mean, at least Wolverine's up to that standard

For reference, here's the combat from the most action-heavy title in Nintendo's lineup

Re: #206
I haven't touched a Nintendo game in over 10 years, but this looks laughably dated, like some out-of-place relic
Looks like a PS2 game
216AnonymousAug 30, 2026 02:11
Re: #206
That's Nintendo for you
The way it eases into slow-motion, and the impact once it releases, is outstanding
No comparison to graphics-only trash like Wolverine or Fable
230AnonymousAug 30, 2026 02:26
Wolverine's supposed to be flashy action, right?
And Fable's an open-world RPG,
so doesn't that make them a bad match for comparison to begin with?
I get the urge to force a comparison just to make it look bad,
but Skyrim's combat — a game that's sold close to 80 million copies — is plain too

Seems like a pointless exercise, honestly
234AnonymousAug 30, 2026 02:28
It's got Skyrim-like gameplay after all
It's not a linear action game
241AnonymousAug 30, 2026 02:40
Re: #230
Re: #234
So I should compare it against another open-world game's combat instead? Is this good enough?

263AnonymousAug 30, 2026 03:04
Isn't it a lot better than Wolverine just for having ranged attacks?
Wolverine's melee-only,
so it's basically guaranteed to end up a shallow-as-hell game, you know?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Fable is an upcoming Xbox-exclusive open-world RPG, while Marvel’s Wolverine is a PS5-exclusive, linear action game. To begin with, the two differ fundamentally in genre, controls, and design philosophy, and as commenters in the thread pointed out, it’s inherently unreasonable to judge a combat-focused action game and an RPG built around exploration and dialogue by the same standard. As for the clip showing “enemies don’t flinch” that drew criticism, pushback emerged noting that the target was likely a boss-tier enemy built with a “super armor” design that resists staggering from ordinary damage — making it premature to declare the entire combat system “unfinished” based on a single clip. The footage shown is also likely from a build still in development, leaving room for adjustments before release. It’s also worth keeping in mind that, in the context of console rivalry, Fable is an easy target to line up against a buzzworthy title on a competing platform.
