  • Former Morning Musume Member Koharu Kusumi, 34, Undergoes Cataract Surgery — 5ch: ‘My Classmate Had It Done at 14’

Koharu Kusumi (34), a former member of Morning Musume and now an actress, revealed on her Instagram Stories that she underwent surgery on her left eye for cataracts. Cataracts are widely associated with aging, but it’s not unusual for cases to appear at a young age due to factors like UV exposure, genetics, or atopic dermatitis. On 5ch, threads lit up with surprise at her developing the condition at 34, alongside a stream of stories about early-onset cases — “my classmate had surgery at 14,” “I had surgery myself in ninth grade because of genetics.” The discussion also turned to comparing how painful cataract surgery is versus retinal detachment surgery, and to a lively debate over whether 34 even counts as “young.”

Having your head, limbs and eyelids clamped down, then a rubber sheet draped over your whole face with just a hole cut for the eye, then getting an intraocular injection — that was the worst part for me.
Even under anesthesia there's still pressure pain, and you can see it happening. It's torture.

    Re: #15
It's like there's a thin sheet of gauze in front of your eyes — everything looks white.

If the clouding starts from the outer edge of the lens, then when your pupil shrinks (say, from bright light) you stop using the clouded part, so apparently it gets easier to see at that point.

With the atopic type, the clouding reportedly starts from the center, so when the pupil shrinks you end up only using the clouded area — meaning everything in front of you turns totally white.

    55AnonymousAug 29, 2026 19:03
The real hell isn't cataract surgery — it's retinal detachment surgery.

They jab an anesthetic needle straight into your eyeball, suck out the contents, then laser-burn the retina on the back wall of the eye.
And since it's just local anesthesia, you're obviously still conscious the whole time.

After surgery, you have to stay face-down — literally with your face in a toilet-seat-shaped cushion — for two weeks straight until the eye naturally refills itself.

Pretty much everyone gets cataracts once they're old enough.
(If you don't, consider yourself lucky.)

But once you're elderly, the cornea hardens, which makes both the surgery and the recovery much rougher.
If you have older relatives around you, it's worth getting their eyes checked early so you know what condition they're in.

I googled "partial vision loss" based on what you said.
You should probably get to a hospital sooner rather than later.

    Likely causes to consider:
    Glaucoma:
A condition where the nerves inside the eye get damaged, gradually narrowing the field of vision. It often progresses with no noticeable symptoms and is the #1 cause of blindness in Japan.

    Retinal detachment:
A condition where the light-sensing retina peels away. Vision can suddenly go missing in patches, or look like a black curtain has dropped over part of your view.

Brain conditions: Stroke or brain tumors can also cause part of the visual field to disappear.

    Re: #251
If it's been going on for a year, it's probably glaucoma. With the other conditions, it would've gotten dramatically worse fast once you noticed.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Cataracts occur when the eye’s lens turns cloudy, and while aging is generally cited as the main cause, medical reports also document cases appearing in people’s teens or thirties due to UV exposure, genetics, atopic dermatitis, or congenital factors. Developing cataracts at 34 is unusual, but not an impossible age for it. In the thread, surprise at how young she was mixed with posters sharing their own or their family’s early-onset stories, turning the exchange into more of an information swap than an argument. Posters also noted that the hallmark symptom of cataracts is the entire field of vision looking hazy or white, whereas losing just part of your vision points more toward a different condition like glaucoma or retinal detachment — several warned against confusing the two. It was also mentioned that regular checkups don’t necessarily halt the progression itself, underscoring how important it is to correctly identify which type of symptom you’re actually dealing with.

CNN reported that a checkpoint on the Nepal-China border was swept away, building and all, by a massive debris flow triggered by torrential rain. Aerial photos captured the scene before and after the disaster, showing the site of what was once a large building reduced to what looks like bare, empty ground — a sight that also became a hot topic on 5ch. The thread saw discussion from multiple angles: the destructive power of debris flows, how hard it is to survive one, the reasons behind the flood of photos and videos coming out of the disaster area, and the infection risk posed by bacteria in the mud.

So it's sandwiched neatly right between China and India

Background and Key Points of This Story

The border region linking northern Nepal with Tibet, China, is known for terrain prone to landslides and debris flows during monsoon season. The checkpoint reported to have vanished this time was likely located at a key point along the overland route through the mountains. In recent years, the spread of smartphones and heavy local traffic have meant that footage from disaster sites floods social media almost immediately — but cases of fake images generated by AI slipping in have also been increasing, making it harder to tell real photos and videos from fakes, a point also raised in the thread. Unlike a plain flood of water, a debris flow sweeps up soil, rock, and debris, which increases its mass and energy and has a major effect on the scale of damage and survival odds. It’s also worth knowing that bacteria in buried mud can turn into airborne dust once it dries out and become a source of infectious disease — a secondary hazard worth understanding after a disaster like this.

  • Police Body Cameras Going Nationwide from FY2027 — 5ch: “Show Us the Wrongful Arrests Too”

The National Police Agency has finalized plans to equip police officers nationwide with hands-free “wearable cameras” starting in fiscal year 2027. In trial runs, officers actually wore the cameras while on duty, and the agency says their effectiveness was confirmed. Related costs — about ¥170 million for roughly 2,000 units — have been included in the budget request for fiscal 2027.

On 5ch, some voiced concern over whether footage of wrongful arrests or police questioning would truly all be made public, or whether only inconvenient scenes would be deleted, while others called for tasers to be introduced first, or for similar camera systems to be extended to private businesses like convenience store staff.

    Re: #86
Though it's totally plausible the police could just claim "this doesn't count as evidence" whenever it's inconvenient for them.

    Background and Key Points

Just like dashcams, police wearable cameras rely on “continuity of recording” as a precondition for their evidentiary value. The point that a gap in the footage could actually end up counting as evidence against the police isn’t obvious from the original article alone. Overseas, many countries including the UK, US, and Australia have already made such cameras mandatory and put them into practical use, so Japan’s adoption comes relatively late by international standards. The budget allocated this time covers roughly 2,000 units at about ¥170 million — a scale closer to an extension of the trial program than a true nationwide rollout, given the total number of police officers in Japan, so it’s easy to misread “nationwide adoption” as meaning every officer will be equipped immediately. On 5ch, distrust over whether footage of wrongful arrests and police questioning will really be fully disclosed — or whether only the inconvenient scenes will conveniently go missing — is being voiced alongside hopes that having evidence on record will cut down on disputes; the transparency of the rules for storing and releasing footage looks set to become the key point of contention going forward.

  • Poster Suggests Cutting Costs on a Trip with Friends, 5ch Fires Back: “What’s Even the Point of Traveling Then?”

A poster planning a trip to Hokkaido with four friends wrote on 5channel (5ch, Japan’s largest anonymous forum) that their friends pushed back hard after they tried to cut costs on the rental car model, accommodations, and the seafood course. The poster argued a five-seat kei car (Japan’s compact “light vehicle” class) would be plenty for getting around, and that the cheapest food course would do — but other members of the group pointed out that cramming five people and luggage into a kei car could violate seating-capacity law, and argued a trip is exactly the time to splurge. The group also clashed over who should cover gas money for the friend doing the driving, and the thread eventually widened into a broader debate over thriftiness itself.

For the seafood place there were a few course options, roughly ¥5,000, ¥7,000, ¥10,000, and ¥20,000. I wanted to go with the ¥5,000 one, but they said, "C'mon, let's just do the ¥10,000 one since we're here." Then just don't rent a car at all and figure out transportation some other way. Good luck.

Background and the Real Point of Contention

In group activities like travel, people’s sense of an appropriate budget for lodging, transportation, and meals can vary widely, and friction tends to flare up when the trip organizer or a member unilaterally pushes the cheapest option. This is especially true with rental-car transportation, where opinions often split over how to compensate the person doing the driving for gas and the burden of driving itself — and this thread was no exception, splitting into a camp that said “of course you pay a driver’s fee” and one that said “just get a license and the problem solves itself.” Thrift itself isn’t the issue; the real question is how to reach agreement with fellow travelers — and from this thread alone, it’s impossible to say whether the poster’s proposals were high-handed or simply cautious.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyou G, a “live commentary” discussion board) thread “My friend blew up at me over the trip plans.”

  • Can Classic Super Famicom RPGs Still Hook You Today? 5ch: “You’d Get More Hooked on Romancing SaGa 3”

A thread asking “which Super Famicom RPGs would still hook you if you played them today” drew a long list of nominees — Soul Blazer, Shiren the Wanderer, Front Mission, Shin Momotaro Densetsu (“The New Legend of Momotaro”), Mystic Ark, Sansara Naga 2, and more.

At the same time, posters argued that “RPG quality took a real leap forward starting around the PlayStation 1 era” and that “there’s almost nothing pre-Super Famicom that holds up to modern RPG standards” — so the thread went beyond simple recommendations into a debate about the hardware limits of the era and how generational experience colors people’s judgment. When one poster was pointed toward Front Mission, another jumped in with a rival pick — “you’d get more hooked playing Romancing SaGa 3.12 instead” — and the thread never quite settled on a consensus.

    Re: #116
Yeah, the battle system is clunky and the pacing drags
The setting is genuinely great, though

Background and key points of the debate

The Super Famicom launched in 1990, and its successor the PlayStation followed in 1994 — roughly a four-year gap in development eras. The view raised in post #24, that “quality took a real leap forward starting around the PS1 era,” reflects a real trade-off: the PlayStation’s CD-ROM format gave developers far more storage for elaborate graphics and cutscenes, but that came at the cost of long load times. On the question of whether these older games still hold up, opinions split largely along generational lines — those who experienced the era firsthand versus those who came to gaming later. Post #47 argues the games would feel “boring to anyone used to later-generation titles,” while post #52 counters that individual games (like Fire Emblem) still hold up well today. The exchange in posts #62, #69, and #84 adds a wrinkle: even playing via emulator, PS1’s notorious load times can remain a drag, showing that comparisons across hardware generations aren’t as clear-cut as they first appear.

    The logic doesn't add up.
To win Olympic gold you'd have to beat Japan's team anyway, so the odds are the same whether he competes for Japan or Mongolia.

In Mongolia, if you win an Olympic medal the state takes care of you for life.
Wonder if that applies to naturalized citizens too?
    50AnonymousAug 28, 2026 23:12
Why is it that judo guys always end up with faces like Satoshi Ishii or Shohei Ono?

    Background and Key Points

Switching nationality to chase an Olympic berth has precedent in sports like table tennis and sumo, and the IJF imposes a waiting period before newly switched athletes can compete, to keep the practice from being abused. That rule is presumably why Mashiyama can’t compete for Mongolia until April next year. Where the thread split was over whether to view this as taking a spot away from Mongolia’s judo community, or as a rational move given the gap in competitive depth between the two countries. Note that Japan does not generally recognize dual citizenship, so a change of nationality effectively amounts to naturalization. Mongolia has produced many sumo wrestlers, but its Olympic medal record in judo isn’t nearly as deep as Japan’s — it isn’t necessarily the “judo powerhouse” some might assume, a nuance the original article doesn’t really convey. Mashiyama has never competed in the Olympics, and given that he’s 27, some see the Games two years from now as effectively his last shot.

  • CoCo Ichi to Add 7% Late-Night Surcharge — 5ch Split Over Whether It’s Worth It

Ichibanya announced that starting September 1, its “Curry House CoCo Ichibanya” chain will introduce a late-night surcharge, adding a flat 7% to both dine-in and takeout orders placed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. The company cites rising costs for raw ingredients and logistics. Late-night surcharges are already common at family restaurants and beef bowl chains, but on 5ch the move drew mixed reactions — some blasted it as “not worth the price” and “a straight-up rip-off,” while others defended it, arguing “they’ve held the base price steady since 2024, so this is fair” and “their curry has a distinct originality that justifies the cost.” Opinions on both price and taste were split.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Ichibanya has kept CoCo Ichibanya’s core prices unchanged since 2024, so this late-night charge is better understood as a “time-limited add-on” rather than a straightforward price hike. Late-night surcharges are already standard at beef bowl chains and family restaurants, making this part of a broader industry response to rising labor and utility costs. A rumor that circulated in the thread — about a “part-time high schooler turned female company president” — reportedly concerns a franchise operator rather than Ichibanya itself, and readers should be careful it doesn’t turn into baseless criticism aimed at company executives. There was also a comment arguing that raising prices while rice prices are falling doesn’t add up; that drop, however, is simply a rebound from rice prices hitting record highs in 2025, a separate issue from the broader rise in overall ingredient costs — a distinction that’s easy for readers to conflate.

  • Sandwichman’s Date suspends activities after stroke — daily nosebleeds, blurred vision started 6 months ago

Mikio Date (51), one half of the comedy duo Sandwichman, has suspended his entertainment activities after suffering a stroke (cerebral infarction). On August 26, it was announced that he would be pulling out of a concert appearance, and on the 28th his talent agency, Grape Company, revealed the reason for his hiatus on its official website. According to the announcement, Date had been reporting unusual symptoms for about six months — daily nosebleeds, trouble focusing his eyes, and his wife pointing out that “his complexion looked bad.” It also emerged that back in June his comedy partner Takeshi Tomizawa had urged him, “Go see a doctor already!” On 5ch’s “Geinou Sokuho+” (entertainment news) board, users compared his case to celebrities who died of stroke or brain hemorrhage in the past, and debated blood pressure management and lifestyle habits.

Mikio Date (51) of Sandwichman had been scheduled to appear as “Yorozu Mikio” at the Tokyo performance of “Chieko Mizutani’s Utage Join Concert 2026” on August 27. However, the day before, on the 26th, it was announced that he would be withdrawing from the show due to poor health.

“Date had also missed the broadcast of the radio show ‘Sandwichman the Radio Show Saturday’ (Nippon Broadcasting System) on the 22nd due to poor health. But no specifics — whether it was illness or injury — were ever disclosed, leaving even people close to him with no choice but to wait and watch,” said one entertainment industry insider.

As concern over Date’s health spread, his talent agency, Grape Company, announced the reason for his hiatus on its official website on the 28th.

Haha, only a total space-case could pull that off (the line is a bit garbled in the original).

Background and key points of this discussion

A stroke (cerebral infarction) occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked and cuts off blood flow to the brain; it often strikes suddenly with no clear warning signs, and it’s said that plenty of people are walking around with small, symptomless infarctions without realizing it. In the thread, some users speculated that Date’s daily nosebleeds and inability to focus his eyes were rooted in high blood pressure, while others weighed in to distinguish his case from that of Hideki Saijo, who died of a stroke, and Shinya Hashimoto, who died suddenly of a brainstem hemorrhage — though the article itself doesn’t make clear that stroke, brain hemorrhage, and brainstem hemorrhage, while all cerebrovascular conditions, differ in cause and severity. The symptoms and timeline described here come from the agency’s announcement and tabloid reporting; the specific diagnosis, test results, and whether he was hospitalized have not been disclosed. Regarding the fact that he reportedly had been feeling unwell for about six months, opinions split between those criticizing the delay in seeking treatment and those who felt that managing one’s own health is ultimately a personal responsibility.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (“Geinou Sokuho+”) thread “[Suspends Activities Due to Stroke] Sandwichman’s Date — Daily Nosebleeds, Unfocused Eyes, Wife Noted ‘Bad Complexion’… The ‘Physical Abnormalities’ He’d Reported Since Six Months Ago [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Final verdict on the Yui Aragaki ‘reverse height fudging’ theory: some say she’s really 176cm… 5ch buzzes over her ‘true height’

Speculation that Yui Aragaki’s real height is taller than her officially listed measurement has circulated on social media for years, and when Yahoo! News published an article digging into the truth, the topic caught fire on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board. The thread didn’t stop at Aragaki herself — actors like Hiroshi Tachi, Masato Sakai, and Masaki Okada, plus pro baseball and soccer players, all got dragged in over their own “fudged height” claims, turning it into a wider chat about height claims across the entertainment and sports industries. Photo-based guessing games got mixed in too, blending fact and speculation.

    Fri, Aug 28, 6:00 PM

There are plenty of tall, model-turned-actress types in showbiz, but the one whose “real” height keeps coming up on social media — with guesses like “probably around 173cm” or “I’d estimate about 173cm” — is the hugely popular actress Yui Aragaki (38).

“Aragaki’s height has been a hot topic online for years. Every time she appears in a drama, movie, or variety show, comparisons with her co-stars spark comments like ‘Gakki’s actually tall.’

With the ABS system in place, they've been measuring accurately since this season, and pretty much nobody's height has changed, right?

    Re: #74
Wasn't the big talking point with the ABS rollout that a lot of players stopped padding their height (stopped lying about being taller than they actually are)?

Background and key points of this discussion

It’s said that female celebrities’ announced heights tend to be listed shorter than their actual height, while conversely, male athletes’ official figures also tend to come in shorter than their actual height — and Yui Aragaki has long been cited online as the archetypal example of the former, with claims that she’s “actually around 173cm.” This latest news article set out to verify the truth behind that, but the thread expanded from talk about Aragaki herself into general “fudged height” trivia spanning celebrities and athletes across the board. Commenters noted that pro baseball players are often shorter than their official listing, while soccer players tend to “grow” a few centimeters over the course of their careers, and pointed to the example of Shohei Ohtani’s listed height being corrected to 193cm after MLB introduced its ABS (Automated Ball-Strike) system. That said, it’s worth keeping in mind that most of the “actually X cm” claims based purely on photos remain speculative — factoring in uncertainties like shoe sole thickness — rather than confirmed fact.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Final verdict on the Yui Aragaki ‘reverse height fudging’ theory: some say 176cm… her ‘true height’ revealed standing sock-to-sock with Gen Hoshino.”

  • USJ Nears Final Deal to Expand Onto Former Nippon Steel Plant Site, Eyeing New Attractions

The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka’s Konohana Ward is in final talks to lease an adjacent site of roughly 60,000 square meters — the former Nippon Steel plant — for a major expansion. The lease is expected to be signed as early as spring 2028, with demolition of the plant already underway since around April 2026. On 5ch’s Newsflash+ (Nyusu Sokuho+) thread, users repeatedly wished for new Nintendo- or Pokémon-themed areas, while others speculated that the whole Osaka Bay Area would grow in tandem with the Yumeshima IR (integrated resort) construction and reuse of the Expo site. The thread also noted that USJ had denied a related Nikkei report the same day, sparking discussion over how such news should be handled ahead of an official announcement.

Published 8/28 (Fri) 1:01 PM — Yomiuri Shimbun Online

It was learned on the 28th that those involved are in final talks to substantially expand the theme park “Universal Studios Japan (USJ)” in Osaka’s Konohana Ward. The plan calls for using roughly 60,000 square meters of land owned by the city of Osaka and others, adjacent to the park’s north side, with the aim of opening new attractions there. The city of Osaka is expected to make an announcement soon.

According to multiple sources, the planned expansion site is the former Nippon Steel plant. It currently comprises land owned by the company as well as land the city leases to it, and the operating company, USJ Co., Ltd., plans to lease both. A lease agreement is expected to be signed as early as spring 2028. The plant has already ceased operations, with demolition underway since around April 2026.

If it's a former factory site there'll be soil decontamination needed, so it won't be sellable right away

    Background and Key Points

The candidate site for USJ’s expansion is the former Nippon Steel plant north of Konohana Ward, and the operating company is expected to lease both the land the company owns and the land the city of Osaka leases to it. Demolition of the plant has been underway since around April 2026, and the lease agreement itself is expected around spring 2028 — but all of this remains at the “sources say” stage, with no official announcement yet from the city of Osaka. One easily misread point from the thread is a separate report that “USJ denied the Nikkei story” — this wasn’t a denial of the expansion plan itself, but appears to be a response to the story breaking ahead of an official announcement. In Osaka, several major developments are proceeding in parallel, including the Yumeshima IR (slated to open in 2030) and the reuse of the Expo site, with USJ’s expansion positioned as part of that broader trend. The Nintendo- and Pokémon-themed area ideas raised in the thread are purely user wishlist items — no specifics about the new attractions have been made public at this point.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsflash+) thread “[Osaka] USJ in Final Talks for Major Expansion… Aims to Open New Attractions.”
