  • Murata Yui: “I’m Watching the Previews for Every Single Music Show” — 5ch: “Of Course She Wants In”

Murata Yui of Hello! Project’s Tsubaki Factory wrote on her blog that she’s “been watching the previews for every single music show lately,” revealing she’s hoping her own group will land a booking. That same day, Juice=Juice appeared on CDTV performing “Moretemiamore” (盛れ!ミ・アモーレ), and on 5ch her post sparked both the observation that “she’d surely be told about a booking by staff in advance” and debate over the exposure gap with Juice=Juice. Reactions split between those who read it as a simple wish and those who read it as tinged with sarcasm.

8(ya)3(sa)1(i)! — Murata Yui (a numeral pun on today’s date, 8/31, that spells “yasai,” meaning “vegetable”)

Normally you'd hear from staff about a booking days before the on-air preview even airs, right?

Stuff like that gets announced out of nowhere, without even the members being told, so you've got to keep checking every music show just in case.
Though the agency must know already, since they're the ones letting the footage be used.

The only new faces this year are Monaki and Juice=Juice.
The "blow up online, then break onto TV" route is basically dying out.
But old-school forced pushing doesn't build recognition either, so it's pretty much a dead end.
About the only thing worth watching in Japanese music going forward is whether iLiFE gets on TV starting next year (or late this year?).
    99AnonymousSep 1, 2026 10:53
There's more chance of Juice=Juice blowing up and pulling everyone else up with them than of Tsubaki rising on their own.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In the entertainment industry, it’s generally standard for talent to be told about a music show booking by their agency or staff well before ever finding out from an on-air preview right before broadcast. That point was raised early in the thread, and the prevailing reading was that Murata’s post was simply an expression of hope from a fan’s-eye view. The real point of contention was the exposure gap between groups within Hello! Project: many posts shared the view that Tsubaki Factory gets far fewer TV appearances than Juice=Juice, who made headlines with their CDTV appearance, but opinions split over whether that gap comes down to a difference in “skill” or simply a difference in the agency’s promotion strategy. There was also a divide between a cynical view that treats the anticipatory post itself as promotional “posturing,” and a more sympathetic view that reads it as genuine fan service — reflecting the differing temperatures among fans themselves over how to interpret an idol’s social media posts.

  • Tensura’s New Character Chloe and Her ‘2000-Year Time Leap’ Power Spark Debate — 5ch: ‘She’s Basically the Secret Protagonist’

In the anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, the appearance of new character Chloe — introduced as someone who ‘can time-leap back up to 2000 years’ — became a hot topic on a 5ch live-commentary thread. Posters zeroed in on a scene where holding Rimuru back leads to an altered timeline in which Tempest is destroyed, and another where she describes the nation Luminous rebuilt as being ‘like livestock,’ sparking a wave of questions about why she’d need to go back 2000 years at all when rewinding to a more recent point would do. Comparisons to Homura from Madoka Magica and Rika from Higurashi When They Cry also came up, fueling a lively debate over the internal consistency of the show’s time-rewind setup.

    Rimuru is Veldanava's reincarnation
He was reincarnated as Satoru Mikami, got stabbed and died, then came back to the original world as a slime
The reason he gets along so freakishly well with Veldora is that they're actual brothers
The reason Rimuru feels no lust toward Milim is that she's literally his daughter
The Great Sage is the soul of Veldanava's wife — Milim's mother — merged with Rimuru's skill, regaining her personality. That's why the 'Legit Wife' (fan nickname for Raphael) and Abi are so overpowered
The final boss is basically a remnant born from the husk of Veldanava's body — in other words, a copy of Rimuru himself
    Satoru Mikami's grandmother is Shizu
After beating the final boss, Chloe's power sends him back to wartime Japan, where he saves Shizu and her mother from an air raid, and returns the soul of 'Shizu-san' he'd been keeping inside himself to Shizu's body
Generations later, a grandchild is born, and Shizu names him Satoru

    Background and talking points

Tensura (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) began as a popular web-novel isekai fantasy, and Chloe is known as a key character tied to the story’s endgame. What sparked discussion this time was how inefficient her ‘can rewind up to 2000 years’ time-leap ability looks in practice — thread posters tested the plausibility of the setup by comparing her to loop/rewind characters from other series, like Homura from Madoka Magica and Rika from Higurashi When They Cry. At the same time, the thread often veered off into the relationships between existing characters like Rimuru and Luminous, and into ‘battle power’ ranking debates — a glimpse of the series’ particular brand of fun, where numerically expressed power levels frequently get put on the chopping block. Note that the theories and power rankings covered in this article are unofficial speculation by viewers, not confirmed official settings.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Tensura just introduced a character named Chloe who can time-leap 2000 years back”.

  • French people say “Don’t just walk into a shop without a word” — Japanese customers’ manners spark debate

In France, greeting the staff upon entering a shop is considered basic etiquette, and customers who skip it are seen as being rude — a claim that sparked a 5channel thread debating how Japanese customers behave when entering stores. In Japan, it’s typically the staff who call out “irasshaimase” (welcome) to customers, and there’s little custom of customers greeting back. Opinions split over how to take this difference, with some arguing “when in Rome, do as the Romans do” and others countering that “walking in without a word isn’t actually rude.”

I don't remember ever responding to one of those greetings, and I never got treated badly either.

Background and key points of this debate

In France, exchanging a “bonjour” with staff when entering a shop is standard social etiquette, and skipping it tends to come across as unfriendly. In Japan, by contrast, it’s the shop staff who call out “irasshaimase” (welcome) to arriving customers, with no real expectation that customers greet back. The thread split over how to read this asymmetry — some treated it as nothing more than a cultural difference, while others turned it into self-criticism, noting that Japanese people are quick to criticize foreign tourists’ manners while staying oblivious to their own customs. It’s also worth noting that the text alone doesn’t confirm whether the original post described a general tendency in France or just one incident at a particular shop, so some caution against over-generalizing is warranted.

  • PS5 Version of GTA6 Runs at 30fps Base, High Frame-Rate Mode ‘Still Under Consideration’ for Post-Launch — Sparks Firestorm on 5ch’s Console Wars Board

A thread mocking the hype around the PS5 version of GTA6 popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Console Wars) board. It borrowed its format wholesale from an earlier trolling thread titled “Everyone’s hyped about Elden Ring on Switch 2,” setting off the kind of console-war bickering the board is known for. Amid the flame war, though, the thread also shared the info that the PS5 version of GTA6 runs at a base 30fps, with a high-frame-rate mode still “under consideration” for a post-launch update — along with reports that overseas media has praised the game’s technical chops.

    Background and Key Points

Threads like this one follow a recurring template on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Console Wars) board that mocks rival console fanbases, and the thread title itself parodies an earlier thread (quoted in reply >>19) titled “Everyone’s hyped about Elden Ring on Switch 2.” The actual substance of the discussion centers on GTA6’s frame-rate specs: the base PS5 version reportedly runs at 30fps, while high-frame-rate support for PS5 Pro is described as “under consideration” for a post-launch update. Some replies are skeptical that this “under consideration” wording effectively means 30fps is locked in for good — and it’s worth noting that, as of this article, the official specs have not yet been finalized.

  • Speed limit on regular roads drops to 30km/h — takes effect September 1, applies to roads without a center line

Starting September 1, 2026, the legal speed limit on general roads that have no center line and no posted speed-limit sign will drop from 60km/h to 30km/h. This covers not just narrow residential streets but also unmarked roads where traffic actually flows at around 60km/h in practice, so 5channel threads lit up with people saying “I had no idea.” Posters also debated how blurry the line is on which roads actually qualify, and speculated about stricter enforcement once the change takes effect.

    Exactly right
Narrow residential streets were never really "60km/h roads" to begin with

    64AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:16

    69AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:19
    Re: #64
    That's right, but
the thing is, roads without a center line vary wildly, from one extreme to the other
A lot of them were never places you could realistically do 60 anyway, and it's mostly people who don't actually drive citing those as their examples

    The real issue is
roads that technically have no center line
but where traffic in practice actually flows at 60+ km/h
Those are the ones that are genuinely a headache
    65AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:17

    110AnonymousAug 31, 2026 18:10
Way too many people are misunderstanding this
It's just the obviously super-narrow roads that get the 30km/h limit

Though apparently my commute road, where I usually go Mach 5, counts too…

Background and key points of this story

This change stems from a revision to the Order for Enforcement of the Road Traffic Act on maximum speed limits, and it applies to roads that have neither a center line nor a posted speed-limit sign. In the thread, there was little pushback on the obvious cases, like narrow residential streets, but opinion split over roads like riverbank levees, where traffic in practice moves fast even though the signage hasn’t caught up. Some posts also showed misunderstanding of the scope, since “residential road” isn’t actually an official term under the Road Traffic Act — it’s just language the police use to explain the change to the public. The key detail is that the speed limit is determined by the road’s structure — specifically, whether it has a center line — not by how wide or narrow it looks or feels. So continuing to drive at the old 60km/h limit simply because no sign is posted could now put you in violation.

It marks the third straight start in which he’s been knocked out early.

On 5channel, opinions were split: some praised his 12 wins piled up in the first half, while others pointed out that his quality-start rate lags behind teammates Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shota Imanaga and that he hasn’t even reached the innings threshold to qualify for the ERA title, arguing “you can’t judge him on wins alone.” The debate spiraled into a broader argument over stats like ERA and home-run rate.

Yamamoto Yoshinobu has a 1.95 ERA in August, 1-2 over 5 starts
Skubal's posted a quality start in all 6 outings since the trade — also 1-2, and even today he allowed zero runs and still didn't get the win

The Dodgers' lineup is too weak to win games, and the bullpen's too shaky to hold onto wins

Man, the other Japanese pitchers aren't doing great either — Senga, Matsui, Kikuchi, Sasaki, none of them have really proven themselves, and now even Yamamoto can't buy a win

Batting average and win totals are the negative legacy of Japanese baseball

    Background and Points of Debate

Tomoyuki Sugano is in his second MLB season with the Rockies, and after piling up 12 wins in the first half, he’d earned a reputation for “holding his own” in the majors. But looking at the stats raised in the thread, his quality-start rate sits at just 7/24 — near the bottom of the team — and he hasn’t even reached the innings threshold to qualify for the ERA title, drawing repeated unfavorable comparisons to teammates Yoshinobu Yamamoto (19/24) and Shota Imanaga (11/26, 8 wins). What defined this thread was the split between a traditional view that weighs win-loss record heavily and a more analytics-driven view that prioritizes substance like ERA and quality starts — with some arguing “wins are just an after-the-fact result” and others countering “12 wins is impressive even without qualifying for the ERA title.” Notably, on that same August 28 game day, Yamamoto also pitched well but went 1-2 due to a lack of run support, making the “gap between win totals and actual performance” surrounding Japanese starters a widely discussed topic that day.

  • Japanese Coach of Thailand’s National Team Fires Back at Online Abuse: ‘Leaving Japan Wasn’t My Choice’

Shin Yoshida (30), the Japanese coach leading Thailand’s women’s national volleyball team, revealed on Instagram on August 31 that he has been receiving online abuse. Thailand recently won the Asian Championship, but Yoshida clarified that “leaving the Japan national team was not something I chose to do,” explaining that he took his current post after being invited by the Thailand Volleyball Association and its head coach once his contract with Japan had ended. On a 5ch thread, many posters voiced support, saying they “don’t understand why he’s being attacked,” while others speculated — based on rumors about his personal relationships — about his motives, with many posts showing little basis in fact.

Shin Yoshida (30), the Japanese coach of the Thailand team that won the Women’s Asian Volleyball Championship, updated his Instagram on August 31. Having served as an analyst and interpreter for the Japan national team until last year, he is now supporting Thailand this year, and he revealed that he has faced criticism and abuse stemming from misunderstandings of the facts.

Yoshida said, “Let me explain the facts in my own words, just this once, regarding the parts that have been misunderstood,” and described the circumstances behind his appointment as Thailand’s coach. “It is not the case that I myself wished to leave the Japan national team and decided this,” he wrote, adding:

He revealed that after his contract with the Japan national team expired at the end of last year, he took his current position after being approached by the Thailand Volleyball Association and head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai, among others. “My gratitude for the time I spent with the Japan national team, and my respect for Japanese volleyball, remain unchanged. And now, with gratitude and a sense of responsibility toward the Thailand team that needed me, I’m giving everything I have to the job in front of me,” he wrote.

People probably assumed he got poached and left.
In reality, Japan didn't want to extend his contract, and it turned into a 'well then, come to us' situation.
I genuinely don't get why he's being attacked over this.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Shin Yoshida, originally an analyst and interpreter for the Japan national team, explained on his own Instagram that after his contract ended, he took the Thailand coaching job at the invitation of the Thailand Volleyball Association and head coach Radchatagriengkai. It’s not unusual in international competition for a coach to end up on the opposing side from their home country’s team — the thread itself brought up the example of Isao Harimoto, who was criticized for providing information to South Korea’s team during the WBC. At the same time, some posts on the thread speculated — based on unconfirmed claims that Yoshida is in a relationship with a Thai national team player — that he became the team’s analyst in order to pass along information, but no supporting reporting was presented, and this contradicts the account Yoshida himself has given. Since such poorly substantiated personal attacks risk reproducing the very abuse at issue, they have been left out of the main article. Readers should keep in mind the distinction between the sequence of events Yoshida states explicitly — contract expiration followed by an invitation from the Thai side — and the unconfirmed speculation that has spread online.

  • Report of Square Enix Going Private Sparks Authenticity Debate on 5ch

Reports have spread that economics-focused outlet “Sentaku” (sentaku.co.jp) suggested Square Enix is considering taking itself private, prompting a reaction on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. The company has long been noted for a structure in which the founding Fukushima family retains a firm grip on shares, relying relatively little on outside capital markets. In the thread, some pointed to the stock’s sharp jump as evidence the report holds water, while a persistent, cooler camp argued it’s just an unsourced rumor running wild that will end with an official denial — making the credibility of the report itself the biggest point of contention.

    Re: #121
Supporting the whole workforce on that alone is tough

But there's nothing else promising in the pipeline either…

Background and key points of this discussion

The trend of publicly listed companies choosing to go private (via MBOs or buyouts by major shareholders) has been increasing both in Japan and abroad in recent years, driven by the cost of dealing with activist investors and a desire for long-term management unconstrained by quarterly earnings disclosures. Square Enix still has the founding Fukushima family as a major shareholder, which is seen as making sudden shifts in management policy driven by outside capital unlikely — though the company has also faced pressure from activist shareholders to improve management efficiency. The thread was split mainly on two points: how credible the originating report is, and how to interpret the sharp stock price jump. No official announcement or timely disclosure had been confirmed as of the time of the article. Also left unaddressed in the thread was the fact that delisting doesn’t necessarily mean scaling back the business or being sold off — many companies continue to operate independently after going private.

    Background and Talking Points

The Hakone Ekiden is a tournament hosted by the Kanto Intercollegiate Athletic Union, open only to universities in the Kanto region — in other words, it’s technically a regional competition. Even so, it has long drawn nationwide ratings as a New Year’s tradition, and the thread’s recurring question of “why does something so Kanto-local get so much buzz” reflects that underlying structure. Dramas adapted from Ikeido Jun’s novels have swung between hits like ‘Hanzawa Naoki’ and misfires like ‘Minou,’ which is why posters speculated about how this new one will fare. Rather than centering on athletes chasing a spot in the race, the story reportedly focuses on the human drama among the TV staff covering the broadcast — a gap between that premise and what sports-drama fans might expect that’s easy to overlook.

  • Osaka Natives Vanish from Dotonbori — 5ch: “Nobody Thinks of It as a Theater District Anymore”

Following a Toyo Keizai article (8/31) reporting that Osaka’s Dotonbori has seen fewer local customers and turned into a street dominated by foreign tourists, reactions poured in on 5ch’s News Speed+ board. The article portrayed it as the end of Dotonbori’s days as a “theater district,” but the thread pushed back hard, with comments like “practically nobody thinks of Dotonbori as a theater district” and “theater culture moved to Yoshimoto’s comedy halls — or people’s living room TVs — long ago.” At the same time, some posters pointed to real changes, like local customers disappearing from Kuromon Market, and noted that redevelopment plans for the former Shochikuza site would preserve theater functions — suggesting the situation isn’t simply a story of “decline.”

"Osaka Shochikuza: talks underway to preserve it, leaning toward keeping the theater function"
    https://news.at-s.com/article/1941312

    Background and points of debate

Dotonbori was once home to the “Dotonbori Five Theaters” (Dotonbori Goza) — the Nakaza, Kadoza, Asahiza, Bentenza, and Naniwaza — and the article’s phrase “theater district” traces back to them. But all five had disappeared by the early Heisei era, so it’s understandable that many thread commenters reacted with “being told it’s a theater district now doesn’t ring true,” given that historical break. Where opinions diverged was over the root cause of locals drifting away: whether to pin it mainly on inbound tourism, or on the broader decline in demand for live theater and performance as TV and streaming took over. Also worth noting, though not mentioned in the article or the lower-ranked replies, is that Shochikuza — long a symbol of Dotonbori — is in talks to keep its theater function even after being rebuilt, so it may be premature to call this “the complete disappearance of theater culture.”

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “‘Osaka Natives Have Vanished From Dotonbori’ — Behind the Inbound Tourism Boom, the End of the ‘Theater District’… What’s Happening Now in One of Osaka’s Premier Entertainment Districts.”
