  • Government Pours ¥616 Billion Into Gasoline Subsidies — 5ch Fires Back: ‘But Oil Wholesalers Are Posting Record Profits’

On September 1, the government approved a cabinet decision to spend ¥616 billion from reserve funds in the FY2026 budget. Of that, ¥613.6 billion will go toward subsidies that hold down the price of gasoline and other fuels, keeping the nationwide average retail price of regular gasoline at around ¥170 per liter. On 5ch, threads featured back-and-forth confirming that the money comes from taxpayers, frustration that major oil wholesalers are posting their highest net profits in a decade amid Middle East tensions, and pointed comparisons to other countries, where it’s more common to let prices rise with the market and instead support struggling households through targeted payments — leaving commenters split on whether the subsidy makes sense.

The government approved a cabinet decision on the 1st to spend ¥616 billion from reserve funds in the FY2026 budget. Of that, ¥613.6 billion will be allocated to subsidies that hold down the price of gasoline and other fuels, preventing the funding source from drying up. The current price target — keeping the nationwide average retail price of regular gasoline at around ¥170 per liter — will be maintained, easing the burden on households and businesses.

Overseas, the common approach is to accept rising gasoline prices as a market signal and handle protection for low-income households through separate social security payments instead.

Kerosene prices are insane right now

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The gasoline subsidy program began in 2022 as a response to soaring crude oil prices and has been repeatedly extended since. Reserve funds are used because they allow spending to be mobilized quickly without Diet deliberation, though the lack of transparency around how the money is spent has repeatedly been raised as an issue in the Diet. Because the subsidy works by suppressing wholesale prices, with payments flowing through the major oil wholesalers, price suppression and rising wholesaler profits tend to happen together by design — which is the root of the ‘only the wholesalers are winning’ criticism seen in the thread. Meanwhile, most countries elsewhere let gasoline prices float with the market and support struggling households through targeted measures like cash payments, making Japan’s approach of having the government hold prices down long-term relatively unusual by international standards. That said, a subsidy alone can’t fully absorb swings from exchange rates or crude oil prices, and the reserve funds paying for it are themselves limited — points not addressed in either the original article or the thread discussion.

  • DF’s John Linneman: “Third Parties Furious Over Sony Killing Discs — Physical Sales Are Most of Their Profit”

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman has revealed that third-party publishers and developers harbor strong dissatisfaction with Sony’s push toward a “discless” future. According to Linneman, many of these companies earn substantial profits from physical disc sales, with some even generating the majority of their revenue from them. In the thread, users pushed back with claims that “90% of PS sales are digital,” while others shared information noting that sales reports for indie developers can be delayed by up to a month, sparking a divided debate over whether abandoning physical media is really the right direction for the industry.

Digital Foundry's John Linneman says publishers and developers are unhappy about Sony pushing toward a discless PlayStation future.
"Most of them were pretty furious. A lot of these companies are actually making significant revenue from physical sales—in some cases it's even the majority… The industry's reaction hasn't been positive."

Sure, returns exist, but basically the money comes in the moment it's shipped to the distributor.
Though I guess you'd have to set aside some funds in reserve for returns.
    105AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:11
    Re: #89
That's not actually how the Western returns-based system works.

The initial deal is basically asking the store to give you shelf space—you don't get paid just for placing the product there.
When the store sells a unit, they keep their "cut," and
the remainder gets paid to the publisher each time, as it sells.

So a "return" just means "pulling the product off the shelf"—no money actually changes hands at that point.

It's closer to how download-card sales work in Japan.

There's no cost to stock the cards, and the publisher just gets paid, minus a fee, for whatever actually sells.
    93AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:04
If there had been some kind of push to promote digital sales—like Nintendo's "Katachike" download vouchers, or the DS Station kiosks back in the DS era—and digital sales grew as a result, sure, that'd make sense.
But with none of that happening at all, the idea that PlayStation alone shifted this drastically toward digital? It's obviously not credible.
    98AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:06
    Re: #93
If anything, PlayStation doesn't even allow codes to be sold through outside retailers—its digital distribution channels are actually pretty narrow.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

For background, the PS5 has sold both digital-only and disc-drive models side by side since launch, and this topic is a reaction to the broader industry direction of “further movement toward a discless future.” Where the thread’s opinions split was over how to assess the actual digital sales ratio—against the claim that “90% of PS sales are digital,” some pushed back by pointing out that the figure is inflated by demos and free monthly titles. Another point of contention is the practical difference between physical copies, which get paid out the moment they’re shipped to distributors, versus digital sales, where reporting and payment reportedly lag by up to a month—a difference tied up with North America’s returns system and Europe’s shelf-space contract structures, making it something that can’t be captured by a simple sales comparison. Opinions on Digital Foundry’s neutrality were mixed, and since some of the thread’s posts include baseless speculation, they shouldn’t be taken at face value as fact. In compiling this article, posts containing unfounded bribery accusations against real companies or mockery targeting specific groups were excluded.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “DF’s John: “It’s true that third parties are unhappy about PlayStation discontinuing discs—in reality, physical sales make up the bulk of their profit.””

  • VIVANT Season 2 Divides Fans: Questions Swirl Over AI Character and Sakai Masato’s Triple Role

A 5channel thread discussing Season 2 of the TBS drama “VIVANT,” the sequel currently airing, has been split between praise and criticism. The main flashpoint is the show’s AI character, with critics calling its emotional expressions “off-putting” and dismissing it as “just a prop to get viewers theorizing,” while defenders argue it would actually be more unnatural for a modern intelligence agency not to use AI at all. Opinions also diverged over Sakai Masato taking on three roles and the drama’s long two-cour (roughly six-month) run, with the thread split between viewers wanting something simple and easy to follow and those who enjoy a show built for deep analysis.

Background and Key Points of Debate

VIVANT was a massive hit TBS drama starring Sakai Masato in 2023, and Season 2 began airing to high anticipation as its sequel. The thread’s disagreement broke down into two main points. The first is whether the AI character works: defenders argued it would be unnatural for a modern intelligence agency not to use AI, while detractors pushed back that its emotional expressions are unpleasant and that it’s little more than a prop to fuel viewer theorizing. The second is a broader backlash against “theorizing culture” itself, with many expressing fatigue at shows built around social-media puzzle-solving contests. Commenters also flagged Sakai Masato’s triple role, the drama’s long two-cour (six-month) run, and the limited screen time given to popular actors like Matsuzaka Tori. Posts also noted that the broadcast runs through around January of next year, with a feature film reportedly also in the works, underscoring the scale of the franchise. Some posts in the thread also mocked cast members’ appearances or personal lives, but those have been excluded here since they can’t be verified as fact.

While some expressed surprise that a mahjong-themed title could keep selling this well, opinions split over its modest 49th-place global ranking — some called it proof of how small the Japanese market is, while others argued it simply reflects a lack of competition from other titles.

As of 9:54 AM on September 1, ILLUMINATION’s Super Real Mahjong: Venus Returns holds the #1 spot on the domestic Steam sales chart — its 5th straight day at the top. While hard sales data is limited, this could arguably be one of the standout success stories in the industry’s long history.

    Re: #132
You were the one raging since launch day about how badly you wanted to play it, saying this is exactly the game PSVR2 needed.

Background and key points of the discussion

Steam’s domestic sales charts don’t publish actual unit-sales figures, so the “roughly 10,000 units worldwide” number floated in the thread is a user estimate, not official data. Opinions in the thread split over why a #1 domestic ranking translates to only 49th place globally: some saw it as evidence that the Japanese market is small, while others argued it simply means nothing else is selling well, or that different countries want different genres. Worth noting: strip-mahjong games are a long-established genre in Japan but largely unfamiliar overseas, so the ranking gap alone doesn’t straightforwardly reflect relative market size — a nuance readers may easily miss. This article also omits some exchanges involving sexual content and age-related remarks.

  • GPU Prices Keep Climbing — 5ch: “Don’t Trust the Bad-Timing Guy”

A thread that started from the classic nanJ joke — every time someone says “I want a PC,” someone replies “the timing’s bad” — before turning into a real discussion about GPU prices. Some users say the RTX 5070 Ti has gone from ¥150,000 to over ¥200,000, while others report buying one for ¥80,000–¥100,000-something, highlighting just how much price varies depending on when you bought. The talk also turned to people who built new PCs to play Monster Hunter Wilds at launch — at the time they were mocked for “wasting money on a trash game,” but in hindsight many say the timing worked out great. Posters also pointed to AI-driven demand pushing up parts prices and the used market collapsing after Windows 10 support ended, with opinions split on whether prices will come back down.

    Re: #96
It used to be "load up on more RAM than you need, just in case," but now it's at the point where there's no such thing as too much 🙄

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The continued rise in GPU prices stems from a semiconductor and memory crunch driven by surging demand for generative AI. Posters in the thread floated theories like “AI companies have bought up huge numbers of Macs for AI use” and “AI is a bubble, but since production itself has already shrunk, prices will stay high even after it pops” — opinions were split between optimism and pessimism about a future price drop. Windows 10 support also ended in October 2025, and the thread’s comment that “the dirt-cheap used PCs disappeared once Win10 support ended” reflects that. The bottom falling out of the used market is one reason people keep saying “the timing is bad” right now. One thing readers might easily misread is that this talk of prices and shortages is based on individual anecdotes and gut feelings about the market, not official statistics. Still, the recurring story that “people who bought PCs for the Monster Hunter Wilds launch ended up coming out ahead” keeps getting repeated as a reminder that waiting longer doesn’t always pay off — making it a nice provocation for the ongoing debate about when to buy a PC.

  • Long-Term Rates Hit 2.985%, 5ch Says ‘Bring Back a World With Real Interest Rates’

In the government bond market on the 1st, the yield on the newly issued 10-year bond — the benchmark for long-term interest rates — briefly rose to 2.985%. According to Japan Bond Trading Co., that’s the highest level in roughly 30 years, since it hit 3% in October 1996. On 5ch threads, opinions split between those who see this as a normalization toward “a world with real interest rates” and those worried about ballooning interest payments as government spending continues to outpace tax revenue. Differences between Japanese and U.S. monetary policy, and comparisons with Japan’s fiscal situation back in 1985, also came up.

The Biden administration's COVID response sparked inflation and drove up interest rates. The Kishida government sat on its hands, but did raise rates in 2024. The market expected the BOJ to push a bit harder for yen strength, but was disappointed, and the yen's been on a weakening trend since 2025.

Overheated AI investment in the U.S. also pulled money from around the world into America, which contributed to a stronger dollar.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The newly issued 10-year JGB yield climbing to 2.985% marks the highest level in roughly 30 years, since October 1996. Compared to back then, Japan’s outstanding public debt has grown enormously, so even at the same yield level, the weight of interest payments is completely different. On the thread, opinions split between those who framed the return to “a world with real interest rates” as a normalization, and those worried about ballooning interest payments amid a fiscal situation where spending far outpaces tax revenue. Views were also divided over the Takaichi administration’s economic policy and the merits of past monetary easing, with some attributing the rate rise to structural factors predating the change in government, and others tying it to the current administration’s statements and policies. Some posts compared this to the U.S. rate-hike cycle, but differences in underlying conditions — such as inflation targets and social security systems — weren’t fully addressed in the replies.

  • Unofficial ‘Elden Ring’ Strategy Guide Turns Out to Be a Bare-Bones AI-Generated Book, Sparks Discussion

A user who bought a “complete strategy guide” being sold on Amazon to coincide with the release of the Switch 2 version of ‘Elden Ring’ posted on X that the contents were sparse, like an instruction manual — no photos, no stat listings, no maps — and it became a topic of discussion on 5ch. The book reportedly ranked as high as #9 in Amazon’s “Game Fan Books” category, and thread posters pointed out that it was a self-published paperback that bypassed proper publishers, with content that appeared to be generated by AI. Some commenters noted that similarly shoddy strategy guides had caused a stir for other games in the past.

The new “complete strategy guide” released to coincide with the Switch 2 version of Elden Ring, pictured below ↓

    This isn’t a strategy guide — it’s an ultra-simplified instruction manual.

No photos, no stats, no map.

    Re: #74
And the result is buying an AI-generated strategy guide — what a cautionary tale lol
Real bookstores are still needed after all

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Amazon has a “paperback” self-publishing feature that lets individuals publish books without going through a publisher’s review process; each time an order comes in, Amazon prints and binds a single copy on its end. Because sellers only need to submit a digital manuscript, it’s technically possible to turn AI-generated text straight into a sellable book, and this kind of “AI-made strategy guide” for unreleased or already-released games has been pointed out for other titles in the past as well. In the thread, one point of debate was how little way there is to distinguish an official strategy guide put out by a publisher like Dengeki from one of these unofficial books before buying it. The cover design alone can easily be mistaken for an official guide, and it was noted that enough people bought this one for it to place near the top of game-related sales rankings. Some also pointed out that, given the declining usability of strategy websites and dissatisfaction with the accuracy of generative-AI chat answers, demand for physical strategy guides still remains strong.

  • Tomochika Says the Name “Mizutani Chieko” Was Just a Coincidence — 5ch Reacts: “Does Anyone Actually Believe That?”

Actress Yaeko Mizutani (87, real name Yoshie Matsuno), a leading figure of the Shinpa theater troupe, died of pneumonia on August 28, Shochiku announced on the 31st. Comedian Tomochika (53) has long performed an impersonation character named “Mizutani Chieko” — a name just one character off from Yaeko Mizutani’s — and released a statement of condolence through her talent agency, explaining that the resemblance was purely coincidental. On 5ch, many voices doubted her sincerity, saying it’s hard to believe Tomochika wouldn’t know the name of such a legendary actress, while others argued it wouldn’t be strange for her not to know, depending on generation or genre.

So how would it NOT have been harsh?

Background and Key Points of This Story

Yaeko Mizutani is a prestigious stage name representing the Shinpa theater troupe, handed down traditionally since the first generation. “Mizutani Chieko,” on the other hand, is the name of an impersonation character Tomochika has performed for years — one character off from the real actress’s name — and it kept being used that way throughout Mizutani’s lifetime without incident. What split opinion on the thread boils down to one question: did the 53-year-old Tomochika really not know the name of a major actress from the same era? Some argue there’s no way she wouldn’t know, given her position on television, while others point out that even a heavyweight of the theater world can have low name recognition with the general public depending on the field, so it wouldn’t be strange for her not to know. The “grace” mentioned in the headline refers to the fact that Yaeko Mizutani herself reportedly never raised the issue during her lifetime; this latest statement of condolence simply revisited and explained the backstory on the occasion of her death — it isn’t a new controversy, a distinction that’s easy to miss.

  • Is Porting to Switch 2 Worth the Time? 5ch Erupts Over Sales Comparisons

A thread titled “Is it really necessary to spend such a long time porting to Switch 2?” on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board started out as a debate over how much porting effort third parties have to put in, then snowballed into a full-blown sales showdown pitting Switch 2 against PS5 and Steam. Posters traded specific titles back and forth: Granblue Fantasy: Relink reportedly sold 1.67 million copies on Steam while its Switch 2 version has struggled, Sony’s own Marvel Tōkon supposedly moved only 2,000 units, and there was disagreement over whether the Switch 2 version of Persona 3 Reload has quietly kept selling since launch. Whether Switch 2 actually generates enough demand to justify porting costs stayed unresolved to the end.

Then you should've just said 'Switch 2 titles that outsold PS5' from the start

You often see this claim on gaming-hardware boards: '3D RPGs sell on PC as long as they skip Switch 1/2 — release on Switch 1/2 too and PC sales die'

So then why did Visions of Mana sell worse than Trials of Mana, which also released on Switch?

There's no way third parties are going to design around a low-spec, also-ran console like Switch 2 as their baseline

Background and key points of this discussion

Switch 2 launched in June 2025, and its CPU/GPU power sits below the PS5’s. When third parties build simultaneous-release multiplatform titles, they have to scale development down to fit the weaker hardware — which is exactly what fuels the “downgraded version” criticism and the debate over porting timelines. The sales figures cited in the thread (Granblue Fantasy: Relink’s 1.67 million on Steam, Marvel Tōkon’s 2,000 units, etc.) come from unverified 5ch posts and may not match official figures or third-party reporting. There’s also a running disagreement between the claim that “even a launch-day flop can quietly rack up sales through digital discounts” and the counter-claim that “unlike packaged games, Switch doesn’t get that kind of steady long-tail growth” — the unsettled question of how Switch’s digital sales actually behave is part of why this kind of argument keeps resurfacing.

※This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Is it really necessary to spend such a long time porting to Switch 2?.”

  • Naenano Reveals Her Driver’s License Has Lapsed — “I Knew, But…” — Surprising Reason Sparks “What a Waste” Reactions

Naenano (25), an influencer who serves as MC on ABEMA’s dating reality show “Love Catcher Japan 3,” revealed during promotional interviews for the show that her driver’s license has lapsed. When her co-star Moriyama of the comedy duo “Mitorizu” asked if she’d noticed the renewal deadline approaching, Naenano reportedly replied, “I knew, but I wasn’t confident…” On the 5channel entertainment/sports news board, a thread debated whether this “lapse” meant she’d simply forgotten to renew her license, or whether it referred to a deadline tied to her time at driving school (a time limit imposed for completing coursework or taking the exam after finishing lessons) — something the article’s wording alone couldn’t clarify.

Naenano Reveals Her Driver’s License Has Lapsed, “I Knew, But…” — Surprising Reason Sparks “What a Waste” Reactions

The comedy duo “Mitorizu,” voice actor Kimura Subaru (36), actress Takahashi Mary Jun (38), and influencer Naenano (25) will serve as MCs on ABEMA’s dating reality show “Love Catcher Japan 3,” which begins streaming on the 1st. They recently sat down for an interview to promote the show.

The show is a romantic psychological game where “Love Catchers” seeking true love face off against “Money Catchers” chasing a 10 million yen prize. Asked what she’d do if she won the 10 million yen, Naenano answered instantly, “I’d want to buy a car.”

Mine lapsed too and I had to get it all over again.
Turned out the 8-ton-limited category (a mid-size truck license class) had been discontinued — I still think that's total BS.

Not many vehicles you can drive with the 8-ton-limited license anymore anyway, so it's probably not worth stressing over.

    Wrong, don't fall for it.

It's the deadline from enrolling at the driving school to finishing the classroom coursework, and that's nine months, not six.
After that you go take the license exam — that has a one-year deadline from when you finish the school.
    9AnonymousSep 1, 2026 10:26
If the driving-school deadline expired, doesn't that mean she gave up before actually getting her license?

People who are "paper drivers" like this (license holders with no real driving experience) should just hand back their licenses.
It's a hazard if they suddenly get out on the road.

If you lost your confidence during lessons, then not getting the license was the right call — it'd just be a hazard to everyone else. Please, by all means, keep on fantasizing about driving a cool car.

    Re: #82
That's not quite it. She did get the license. She just figured she wasn't confident enough, so why bother renewing.
    93AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:13
Meanwhile, she muttered, "It expired, so the driving school…" When asked, "Wait, you don't have a license?" she calmly replied, "Right. It expired."

When Moriyama of "Mitorizu" shrugged and said, "So you didn't notice it was time to renew?" she answered, "I knew, but I wasn't confident," prompting reactions of "What a waste!"

    Isn't Moriyama misunderstanding here?
He clearly didn't hear the end of "It expired, so the driving school…"

I bet the "(when it was time to renew)" part was just something the transcriber inserted —
    that's probably the mistake.
Driving school itself isn't cheap, so I get why people say it's a waste,
but if she decided for herself she wasn't cut out for it, there's not much to be done.

    Re: #93
Hard to say without knowing the actual vibe in the room, but it's plausible Moriyama did pick up on it correctly.

It's the opposite, the opposite —

People on YouTube say that 8-ton-limited license is actually valuable.

Back in my old man's day, the license even came with the motorcycle-class restriction lifted — such a good deal… I'm jealous.

If you lose your confidence during driving school, better not to get the license at all — though maybe she just got unlucky with a bad instructor.
    106AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:19
    Re: #101
When I was young, a lot of instructors were scary — the type who'd just casually snap "Tch, you're not cut out for driving." These days, even instructors with tough-guy, almost yakuza-looking faces will praise you to build you up instead. Apparently if they don't, young people just quit and the schools can't stay in business. Times really do change, huh.
    109AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:22
So basically: "I knew (the renewal deadline was coming up), but I wasn't confident (about driving), so (since I had no intention of driving anymore) I didn't renew it"

    — is that the gist?
    120AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:26
    Re: #109
Maybe she figured there'd at least be some easy test involved?

Either way, giving up a privilege like this is way too much of a waste.
    119AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:26
People who stumble at driving school are better off not getting a license at all.
Give it another 20 years and even without driving skill —
maybe even without a license — kids will probably be able to "drive."
    128AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:34
    Re: #119
Yeah, that's probably where it's headed.
Gold licenses (Japan's clean-record license class with perks) will stop mattering at all.
    121AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:28
She's talking about driving school though.
Isn't the rule that you have to get your license within six months of getting your provisional license?
So why is everyone bringing up license renewal?

Background and Key Points of Debate

Driving school involves multiple overlapping deadlines. Generally, students have about nine months from enrollment to complete the classroom coursework, and then one year after that to take the final license exam. Separate from all this is the “renewal” deadline that comes around every few years once you’ve actually obtained a license. The original article only quotes the line “I knew, but I wasn’t confident,” without clarifying which deadline Naenano was actually referring to — or even whether she’d obtained a license at all. That single ambiguity is exactly what split opinion in the thread, with one camp arguing she simply “skipped a renewal” and another insisting she “never actually got the license because the driving-school deadline lapsed,” each side reading the same quote differently. The 8-ton-limited mid-size license (automatically granted to anyone who obtained a regular license before the June 2007 law revision) also came up, sparking a split between those who doubted its practical value since fewer vehicles qualify each year, and those who called it valuable precisely because it doesn’t require a depth-perception test. In the end, both debates stem from the article’s thin explanation and remain speculation — what Naenano actually meant has not been confirmed.
