  • Gen Z Picks the World’s Most Livable City — Tokyo Ranks #1; 5ch: ‘This Other Ranking Is More Trustworthy’

In a survey conducted by British media outlet Time Out among Gen Z respondents aged 18 to 29, Tokyo was ranked the “most livable city in the world.” On 5ch, some questioned the result citing Tokyo’s overcrowding, while others praised the low cost of living driven by the weak yen. But what stood out most were posts casting doubt on the survey’s credibility altogether, pointing to a separate ranking released around the same time by the UK’s Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which placed Tokyo only 10th and Osaka 7th.

Gen Z places a high value on community-building and everyday experiences as key elements of city life. According to one survey, outdoor activities and “third places” are top priorities for Gen Z residents. A city that makes it easy to casually connect with others is where Gen Z feels most at home.

Gen Z is often stereotyped as “detached” or “lacking social skills,” but that label may be unfair.

To find out which cities are most livable for Gen Z, British outlet Time Out surveyed residents aged 18 to 29 around the world, asking about everything from affordability to nightlife.

Japanese service workers should be allowed to push back harder when a customer is clearly being unreasonable.
Japan is a nation of complainers, and because the deep-rooted "the customer is God" mentality persists, most companies fail to protect their employees.
It's not genuine heartfelt service — it's just the product of Japanese corporate peer pressure that crushes individual agency.
Foreigners who act however they please should just get thrown out of the store.

  • Dodgers Win Fifth Straight as Skubal Fans 11 for First Win Since Trade — Ohtani Goes Hitless

The Dodgers rallied to beat the Pirates 4-3, extending their winning streak to five games. Starter Tarik Skubal, making his first appearance since being traded to the team, earned his first win with 11 strikeouts over 7 innings on 106 pitches, while Shohei Ohtani went hitless in three at-bats with two walks.

The thread debated the relative value of walks versus hits, trading numbers back and forth over Ohtani’s batting average with runners in scoring position and his OPS in close-and-late situations.

■MLB: Dodgers 4-3 Pirates (Dodger Stadium, August 23 Japan time)

The Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani (32) started at home against the Pirates, batting leadoff as DH. He went hitless in three at-bats with two walks and two strikeouts. Starter Tarik Skubal (29) allowed three runs in the first inning, but the Dodgers closed to within one run in the 4th on back-to-back RBI hits from Teoscar Hernández (33) and A. Thomas (26). In the 5th, a two-run RBI hit from Kyle Tucker (29) put the Dodgers ahead for good. Skubal shut out the Pirates from the 2nd inning on, throwing 7 innings on 106 pitches with 5 hits allowed, 11 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 3 runs (3 earned) to pick up his first win since joining the team, as the Dodgers claimed their fifth straight win.

    87AnonymousAug 23, 2026 11:44
    Re: #64
That's exactly what I said from the start — a walk isn't equal to a real hit, it's equal to a cheap "roach hit" (5ch slang for a weak infield squibber that just barely sneaks through).
And with the bases loaded or a runner on first, a roach hit doesn't even count as a hit — it turns into a force-out.
So technically, a walk is worth slightly more than a roach hit.
That logic's gotta sting for the guys who've been worshipping that stat.

  • Tamura Meimi: “I Couldn’t Believe Karin Failed the S/mileage Gen 2 Audition” — 5ch: “Saho Riho and Miyamoto Karin Were on Another Level for Their Generation”

Former S/mileage member Tamura Meimi’s tweet recalling, “I couldn’t believe Karin failed the S/mileage 2nd generation audition,” was introduced on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread discussed anecdotes of harsh coaching during the training-camp evaluations, behind-the-scenes selection stories about Miyamoto Karin (who later became the center of Juice=Juice), and how their generation — Tamura, Saho Riho, and Miyamoto Karin — was rated.

・Even at the ANGERME 2nd gen audition training camp, Miyamoto looked like she was on another level — she couldn't believe Miyamoto failed (at the time nobody knew Miyamoto was actually being held back to later become Juice=Juice's center).

  • Will Central Tokyo Condo Prices Keep Soaring? 5ch: ‘Tokyo Isn’t Real Demand — Everywhere Else Just Sank’

An article in which real estate consultant Tomohiro Makino argued that “Tokyo’s concentration of population won’t continue” became a hot topic on 5ch’s News Express+ board. Opinions were divided over the background to soaring condo prices in Tokyo’s 23 wards — whether Tokyo’s demand is “real,” the wage and job gap with regional cities, and how a major earthquake might affect prices.

With population decline and the falling birthrate and aging society posing major challenges for regional Japan, real estate consultant Tomohiro Makino points out that “Tokyo’s concentration won’t continue.” Behind this view lies the heavy housing-cost burden created by soaring condo prices in Tokyo, along with a renewed appreciation for the livability and regional value that provincial cities offer. We spoke with Makino about what’s really driving the surge in condo prices, why he believes Tokyo’s concentration won’t last, and what qualities make regional cities worth watching. (Part one of the series)

    ■ “Tokyo condo prices aren’t being driven by real demand”

Prices for used condos in Tokyo’s 23 wards continue to climb.

    The lament of a Tokyo-area commuter-town resident

Even here I can't help comparing my hometown to Shizuoka City
Even though its population is less than half my hometown's, the area around Shizuoka Station is way livelier. It's not just big shopping complexes — there's an old-fashioned shopping street too, and shops line the approach to the shrine
My hometown is a commuter town for Tokyo, so maybe it's because most residents spend their days and weekends in the city? Kind of makes me sad

  • Niigata Raises Minimum Wage to ¥1,108, Union Objects — 5ch Asks: “Can You Even Live on That?”

The Niigata Regional Minimum Wage Council has recommended raising the hourly minimum wage by 58 yen to 1,108 yen starting in October, but labor unions including “Echigo Union” have objected, arguing that this “isn’t enough to live a decent, human life.” On 5ch’s News Express+ (Newsplus) thread, opinions clashed between those who called the raise reasonable given rising prices and those worried it would squeeze small and mid-sized businesses, sparking debate over what the minimum wage should actually be.

Regarding Niigata Prefecture’s minimum wage, a labor union has objected to the council’s recommendation to raise it to 1,108 yen, saying “this still makes life a struggle.”

The objection was raised by the labor unions “Echigo Union” and “Rainbow Union.”

On the 5th, the Niigata Regional Minimum Wage Council recommended to the Niigata Labour Bureau that the prefecture’s minimum wage be raised by 58 yen to 1,108 yen, effective October 1.

  • Fierce Thunderstorms Slam Kanto — Nogizaka46 Concert Hit With Entry Restrictions

On the afternoon of August 22, 2026, unforecast heavy rain and thunder pounded the Kanto region for hours, prompting Tokyo to issue a Level 4 Heavy Rain Emergency Warning. At Nogizaka46’s concert at Meiji Jingu Stadium, entry was temporarily restricted due to lightning near the venue, while reports of flooding and water intrusion poured in from across the region.

On 5ch, opinions split between those calling it “just an afternoon shower” or “business as usual,” and those insisting it was “abnormal rainfall nobody forecast.” The thread heated up further with theories blaming urbanization or global warming — and even a few conspiracy theories thrown in for good measure.

An afternoon shower (yūdachi) is rain that falls from cumulonimbus clouds (towering thunderheads) formed when strong summer sunlight heats moist air near the ground, causing it to rise — it typically clears up within an hour at most.

Sounds like you're misunderstanding what global warming actually means.
It's less about temperatures simply rising and more about extreme weather becoming more frequent.
Record winter snowstorms and sudden heavy snowfall are also effects of warming.

  • My Wig Debut Went Totally Unnoticed — 5chers: “The People You See Every Day HAVE Noticed”

A poster who started wearing a wig after a job transfer got a reaction from 5ch’s realtime-thread crowd. Their report that “seriously, nobody’s noticed” drew a string of insights only fellow wig-wearers would know, like “the people you see every day have noticed — they call you ‘Toupee’ behind your back” and “the trick is not making the hair volume look unnaturally thick.” The conversation broadened into hair loss in general, touching on finasteride’s side effects and the rise of thinning hair among young women.

Oh, one more blind spot people miss — if you're planning to debut a wig, go to the barber and have them thin out the wig's hair.
The reason wigs get spotted is that the hair volume looks unnaturally thick for your age.
It's important to buy the wig and then get it cut to look like natural thinning hair

  • Hello! Project Fans Say They’re Tired of Paying for ‘Recognition’ and ‘Flex’ Rights at Meet-and-Greets — 5ch: ‘Whoever Has Fun Wins’

The thread kicked off with a post from a Hello! Project fan who’d lost sight of why they kept pouring big money into individual meet-and-greet sessions (kobetsu) just to be “recognized” (ninchi) by a member. Does spending more really mean more satisfaction? How should fans think about members who are simply being friendly as part of the job? And how does this compare to underground idols in terms of how often events even happen? The debate ranged widely over money and fandom psychology.

    1AnonymousAug 22, 2026 16:54
I think I'm about done with this.
    2AnonymousAug 22, 2026 16:55
Don't you feel like you have to keep supporting them financially? There's also that "offering to the gods" (o-fuse) mindset at play.
    3AnonymousAug 22, 2026 16:56
For now I'm shifting toward just defaulting to watching from home whenever I'm unsure.
    6AnonymousAug 22, 2026 16:56
Think it over carefully~ Money matters, you know~ (quoting a famous old Japanese insurance-commercial jingle)
    8AnonymousAug 22, 2026 16:57
I'm planning to just cleanly quit right at the 30th anniversary concert.
    10AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:00
There's got to be a better use for that money.
    13AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:02
For fans — if the members who flirt with you are just doing it as a job, then it's a legitimate option to buy individual time with whichever member actually engages with you, not just your designated favorite (oshimen). You might end up switching favorites (oshi-hen) down the line anyway.
    15AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:03
What if she says, "You haven't come to see me lately…"?
    16AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:04
Some members will play along, but understand that's just the skill of making a customer feel liked — it's not genuine affection.
    17AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:04
So you're spending money purely for recognition and bragging rights?
    20AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:06
Keep in mind rich people sometimes spend big specifically so everyone knows they spent big — it's basically the idol-fan version of a rich guy driving a luxury car.
    21AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:08
In the end, whoever has fun playing along wins.
    24AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:10
Pay 10,000 yen, get 80% satisfaction. Pay 100,000 yen, get 95% satisfaction. Either choice is fine — it's up to you.
    25AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:11
How popular someone is at individual sessions is also basically an index of "members willing to play along with them" — something you can't really put a number on.
    27AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:13
"Recognition" is also just a tool members use to build that flirty-sales (koi-koi eigyou) atmosphere of "come play with me again."
    28AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:16
So you got recognized — congrats. That just means the member's fine playing along with you, so keep buying if you want. Just know you can end up on her bad side too.
    29AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:17
Sometimes I hear about otaku DMing members directly and it honestly freaks me out.
    31AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:20
    Re: #29 Not on Instagram?
    32AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:20
Comments on Instagram Stories are basically all DMs anyway, so that's not really unusual — though it is a little weird to point it out.
    34AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:22
Members are doing this as a job, so at individual sessions they show up looking cute and in cute outfits. Customers should just enjoy it — a member's personal feelings are beside the point. Not clicking with a member? Could just be compatibility, or maybe she's not the type who does the flirty-sales routine.
    35AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:24
I've had a member ask me to send good restaurant recommendations later over Instagram DM.
    36AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:26
Both the craving for recognition at individual sessions and flexing that recognition on X (Twitter) are bottomless. The one time I went "executive producer" tier (a paid sponsor credit some idol projects sell), the closest I got to a member was snapping a photo — and even that was fun.
    37AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:26
Ah, so we're talking about DMs — if a member reads blog comments, she might check DMs too. Trying too hard to stand out there will probably just fall flat, so acting normal is probably best.
    38AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:29
The hard part is that some customers can't help but chase being the member's "number one" or her favorite. That's tough — it's mostly down to luck, honestly. But there's plenty a customer actually can control: self-improvement.
    39AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:31
If you want to step on other fans to become your oshi's number one, just go find an underground idol with only a handful of fans instead.
    44AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:37
Re: #39 Underground idols actually end up costing way more money. Hello! Project still has relatively few events by comparison.
    40AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:34
Guys with no money to spend try to stand out with their chants (call-and-response) instead.
    41AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:35
If you want to stand out from other otaku, you need to bring real value. Are you going to drop millions of yen on every single release? Become a sponsor of an affiliated company? Or, in terms of being the one who hands out opportunities — like a producer on a film or drama, or, if a member's aiming to be a voice actress, the producer who could actually cast her, or even the original author of the source material?
    42AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:36
Wait, is this even specific to Hello! Project? This applies to plenty of other fandoms too.
    43AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:36
Why should you work on self-improvement? Because throwing money at a member or bluntly declaring your feelings has an extremely low success rate for actually getting through to her. Improving yourself so she naturally takes an interest in you is the real shortcut to becoming a favorite.
    45AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:38
Re: #44 I know that already. If you want to be number one, don't you basically need to be able to single-handedly support your oshi's whole career?

  • JR Lines in Kanto Suspend First Trains for Track Inspections After Earthquake — No Restart in Sight as of 5 AM

In the early hours of the 23rd, an earthquake that registered a maximum intensity of 5-lower in Ibaraki, Tokyo, Saitama, and other areas led JR East to suspend the first trains of the day on many conventional-line sections across the Kanto region. On the thread, users traded updates on the status of individual lines like the Musashino Line and Utsunomiya Line, while also repeatedly criticizing JR East’s inspection regime, which some blamed on cost-cutting.

    TBS NEWS DIG

Here’s the latest on the earthquake’s impact on rail service. Around 2 a.m. today (the 23rd), an earthquake registering a maximum intensity of 5-lower struck Ibaraki, Tokyo, Saitama, and other areas. As a result, JR East will suspend the first trains of the day on conventional lines across many sections of the Kanto region for track inspections and other safety checks.

West of Aichi, an intensity of 8 has never once been recorded —
but in Kanto, intensity 8 has hit repeatedly on a 100-year cycle lol

What's this 'intensity 8' supposed to be?
    77AnonymousAug 23, 2026 08:25
    Re: #27
Intensity 8 has never been observed anywhere in Japan — it doesn't even exist, lol (the Japanese seismic scale tops out at 7)

Waking everyone up in the middle of the night for a 5-lower and still not running trains — how dumb is that
Out in the countryside, a 5-lower and trains are back to normal within the hour

Even on the morning of the Great Hanshin earthquake, the Kintetsu line was still running lol

You'd probably say the same thing even at a 6-lower

Though note that an AEON store literally blew up during a 6-lower quake
    65AnonymousAug 23, 2026 08:19
They probably can't run anything until every piece of rail infrastructure — tracks, trains, the power supply, the stations, all of it — has been fully checked for safety

The shared assumption that any accident becomes the operator's fault got cemented after the AEON Mall Kumamoto incident
    71AnonymousAug 23, 2026 08:22
    Re: #65
So everyone piled on AEON, and the result was less convenient transit
And now they're complaining recovery is too slow

That whole cycle, right there — that's Japan for you
    68AnonymousAug 23, 2026 08:21
Well, being overly cautious doesn't keep the world running either

Stopping trains to inspect over a quake this minor probably won't last — it's just for now

Money, money, money > safety, apparently
    73AnonymousAug 23, 2026 08:23
    Re: #68
They do it because an accident ends up costing way more money than the inspection does

    Re: #76
If they were only thinking short-term, they wouldn't bother inspecting at all

    Re: #80
They're always cheaping out on inspections — that's exactly why that overhead-wire trouble the other day knocked things out for a whole day
They get stopped by garbage-tier trouble all the time, so don't even talk
    95AnonymousAug 23, 2026 08:33

The Musashino Line isn't running from Nishi-Funabashi toward Tokyo
    It's doing a partial run toward Minami-Funabashi, between Nishi-Funabashi and Minami-Funabashi
Everyone's swarming that section and it's chaos — the platform is packed
The Musashino Line is also doing a partial run between Nishi-Funabashi and Yoshikawa-minami
Not sure if any trains are making it all the way to Fuchu-Honmachi
