  • Waseda Professor Erupts Over wakatte.tv Video of Sitting on a Graduate’s Diploma

On September 1st, a video published in April 2021 by the academic-pedigree YouTube channel “wakatte.tv” (770,000 subscribers) went viral again on social media. In the clip, a cast member calls a graduate’s diploma from Waseda University’s commencement ceremony a “safety net” (a pun on backup university choices), sets it on the ground, and sits down on top of it. The video has been publicly viewable since its release and has racked up 880,000 views, but criticism exploded after a Waseda University professor called out the channel by name on X (formerly Twitter), saying “This is inhuman behavior.” On 5channel threads, opinions split between those who see academic-pedigree mockery as the channel’s whole shtick — priced in from the start — and those who say using an individual graduate’s actual diploma crossed a line.

A video published in 2021 by the academic-pedigree YouTube channel “wakatte.tv” (770,000 subscribers), in which cast member Fumin Takada calls a Waseda University graduate’s diploma a “safety net” before sitting down on top of it, has gone viral again. On September 1st, a professor at the university criticized the clip on X, calling it “inhuman behavior.”

Diploma Placed on the Ground, Then Sat On

The video in question is “Fumin Goes Off the Rails!? Investigating Where Waseda Students Get Jobs After Graduation!”, published April 11, 2021 (roughly 880,000 views). Timed to Waseda’s commencement ceremony, the segment involved asking graduates leaving the ceremony about their job placements.

Apparently something like this happened way back — at a Waseda entrance ceremony, a freshman who'd failed to get into Tokyo University and ended up at Waseda as his backup school had some kind of breakdown, suddenly stood up mid-ceremony, marched straight to the front, and spat on the Waseda school flag on display. Of course he was expelled.

Background and Key Points of This Story

wakatte.tv is an academic-pedigree YouTube channel with 770,000 subscribers, known for content that mocks university students over their academic credentials. The video at the center of this controversy was published in April 2021 and has 880,000 views; it already had some recognition at the time, but it rapidly went viral again after a Waseda University professor called it out by name on X on September 1st. Opinions in the thread split between those who see academic-pedigree mockery as the whole point of the channel’s content — “why is this a surprise now?” — and those who argue that using the setting of a commencement ceremony and an individual graduate’s actual diploma crosses a line. The discussion was also fueled by the fact that the cast members’ own educational backgrounds (only a high school diploma, a Kyoto University dropout, etc.) became a talking point themselves, creating an ironic situation where the credentials of those mocking others’ credentials ended up under scrutiny. It’s worth noting that neither whether the video was filmed on university grounds, nor whether the diploma was used with the graduate’s consent, has been confirmed with certainty within the thread.

  • “Walking on the right side of the escalator is rude” — Woman who deliberately stands on the right sparks fierce debate

A post to the Yomiuri Shimbun’s reader forum “Otekomachi” has sparked debate on 5ch’s Newsplus board: a woman wrote that she deliberately stands still on the right side of escalators to protest people who walk on that side. Cities like Nagoya and Saitama Prefecture have already passed ordinances banning walking on escalators, and escalators themselves are actually designed for two people to stand side by side — but “leaving one side open” has become an entrenched unwritten rule of etiquette over the years. On the thread, opinions clashed between those who say leaving a side open is “reasonable, out of consideration for people in a hurry” and those who argue that “walking itself is dangerous and violates the ordinances.” The discussion also touched on regional differences — in the Kansai region, including Osaka, it’s the opposite side that’s left open.

It’s a space for honest exchange, where users respond candidly to thread starters who share what’s on their mind. This time, we introduce a post from a woman fed up with the number of people who walk on the right side of escalators. She says that when she rides an escalator herself, she deliberately stands still on the right. How did other Otekomachi users react, and what do experts on public manners have to say?

The people standing in that line aren't in a hurry to begin with. It's more "I'll yield the space since someone else might be rushing." If you're going to conclude it's "faster overall," you need to account for the fact that a second doesn't weigh the same for everyone.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In Nagoya and Saitama Prefecture, ordinances banning walking on escalators have been in effect for several years now, and railway companies are increasingly urging riders to “stand still, don’t walk.” Escalators were originally designed for two people to stand side by side, and the custom of “leaving one side open” is nothing more than a habit that emerged organically among users — not something manufacturers ever intended. The thread’s disagreement centered on a clash between those who see leaving a side open as “consideration for people in a hurry” and those who see walking itself as dangerous and a violation of the ordinances. Regional differences also came up, since in the Kansai region, including Osaka, it’s the opposite side that gets left open. Falling while walking can cause accidents that drag in other riders, and underlying the way this kind of debate keeps recurring is a difference in values over whether to prioritize “efficiency” or “safety.”

Manga artist Masami Kurumada, known for Saint Seiya and Ring ni Kakero, reportedly filed suit at the Tokyo District Court on September 2, 2026, against a former manager who handled his accounting, claiming roughly ¥4.6 billion in damages from unauthorized money transfers. On the thread, posters were less shocked by the sheer size of the damages than by how much royalty income a long-running franchise can pile up, with many comparing the case to the embezzlement scandal involving Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter. Others compared it to pachinko and trading-card licensing revenue from franchises like Fist of the North Star and Yu-Gi-Oh!, sparking discussion about just how massive embezzlement targeting a popular manga artist’s assets can get.

Well, Bandai's selling the toys worldwide, and there's pachinko licensing on top of that.

There are a few different fates for manga artists who were huge in the '80s and are now in their 60s:

Type 1: still publishing steadily today, with royalties from old works still rolling in.

Type 2: got an anime adaptation back then, is barely seen anywhere now, but is set for life on royalties.

Type 3: sold well back then but never got much of an anime push, so income-wise they still have to keep drawing today — until an editor tells them they'd rather bring in a younger artist, and they run out of places to work.

B't X did get an anime adaptation, though.

Background and Key Points on This Topic

Masami Kurumada is known for works like Ring ni Kakero and Saint Seiya, long-running franchises whose anime adaptations, pachinko machines, and toy and game merchandise continue both in Japan and abroad to this day. This lawsuit is a civil suit filed with the Tokyo District Court; at this stage only the plaintiff’s claims have been presented, and the court has not yet ruled on the amount of damages or where responsibility lies. Many thread posters compared the case to the embezzlement scandal involving Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, but Mizuhara’s case was a criminal prosecution in the United States that ended in a guilty plea, whereas this is a civil damages claim against a former manager — a different kind of proceeding. Readers who overlook that distinction risk treating one side’s still-contested claims in an ongoing case as if they were established fact.

  • Xbox controllers put Confirm on the Down button and Cancel on the Right — 5ch users torn over ‘I absolutely hate this’

Xbox-style controllers, like many other devices including the PS5, PC, Google, and Apple products, use a layout where the bottom button confirms and the right button cancels. A thread titled “I absolutely hate this” on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked debate over this layout, along with a stream of trivia about controller button layouts — including how confusing PlayStation’s circle/X notation is, and the fact that the original Xbox’s button layout actually differed from current consoles.

Those came out after PlayStation expanded into America and X became the confirm button.
Sony agonized between the circle-confirm it had set and the X-confirm it had set, and what Sony landed on was… circle/X as confirm.
    Honestly, that's incredibly dumb.

Background and key points of this discussion

The Xbox-style button layout is shared across many platforms — the PS5, PC, Google, and Apple — with Nintendo standing alone as the one using its own layout, and that’s the starting point of the thread. Commenters brought up the popular claim that “the Xbox layout is rational because the buttons run in alphabetical order,” but this was debunked using an image of the original Xbox controller, showing that this wasn’t actually the design philosophy behind it. The thread also covered the history of PlayStation’s circle/X notation — how X became the confirm button once PlayStation expanded into North America, while Japan and Korea alone kept circle as confirm. Many commenters argued the layout debate comes down to “familiarity” rather than “rationality,” and opinions were clearly split between defenders of the Nintendo layout and supporters of the Xbox-style layout.

The download code bundled with retail packaged copies of GTA6 is being sold for less than the PS Store purchase price, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The thread also zeroed in on the code’s unusually short 170-day expiration period, with some suggesting a link to Japan’s reserve-deposit system under the Payment Services Act. Speculation flew about why such a short expiration was set and whether prices would keep falling after launch, alongside a broader debate over whether to buy the retail or store version.

    Re: #97
Oh, you're a 'real gamer' (lol), my apologies

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Under Japan’s Payment Services Act, issuers of prepaid codes with no expiration date (a category known as ‘in-house prepaid payment instruments’) are required to deposit an amount equal to 50% of unused balances with the Legal Affairs Bureau as of each reference date, once those balances exceed a certain threshold. Setting an expiration of roughly six months or less is said to exempt a code from this rule, and the 170-day period discussed in the thread falls within that range. Some posters speculated that the short expiration meant ‘SIE’s finances must be in bad shape,’ but similarly short expiration windows are commonly used on other companies’ download codes as a way to sidestep the deposit requirement, and don’t necessarily signal financial trouble. The thread also included practical exchanges about purchasing methods — such as how the price gap between the store and retail versions could vanish once the Store version goes on sale, and whether buying the packaged version still allows play from midnight on launch day.

  • “A Normal Life” Costs ¥280,000 a Month? NHK Estimate Sparks 5ch Reactions: “Even ¥500,000 Wouldn’t Be Enough for Some People”

NHK’s “Close-up Gendai” ran a special on the “middle-class crisis,” reporting that the “minimum cost of living” for a single-person household to get by comes to roughly ¥3.4 million a year — about ¥280,000 a month — up around ¥500,000 over the past decade. The figure sparked wildly divergent reactions on 5ch, ranging from single posters who say they scrape by on just over ¥100,000 a month, to others who claim they spend nearly ¥800,000 a month even excluding housing. Alongside this, users also debated the broader economic backdrop shaping how people feel about money: the Nikkei average’s decline, a worsening job-openings-to-applicants ratio, and anxiety over NISA (Japan’s tax-free investment scheme).

The Middle-Class Crisis — Where Did the “Normal Life” Go?

As prices soar and the burden of taxes and social insurance premiums grows, the Japanese “normal life” is in crisis. One survey put the “minimum cost of living” needed for a single-person household to maintain a bare-minimum standard of living at ¥3.4 million a year — up roughly ¥500,000 over the past decade. It’s also become clear that some people are being forced to give up on life milestones like marriage and raising children. What’s more, that frustration is increasingly being directed at socially vulnerable people receiving public assistance. We dig into the reality of the deepening “middle-class crisis.”

There's no way you can live a normal life on ¥280,000.
I'm spending close to ¥800,000 a month excluding housing.

    311AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:41

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “minimum cost of living” figure presented by the program is an estimate of what’s needed to maintain a bare-minimum standard of living with no luxuries — a different kind of metric from an average cost of living or a desired standard of living, and that distinction matters. When the number circulates without that context, it easily clashes with people’s actual sense of their own expenses and breeds misunderstanding. Even within the thread, reactions ranged widely — from single posters saying just over ¥100,000 a month is enough, to others saying they spend close to ¥800,000 a month excluding housing — highlighting how dramatically the picture changes depending on whether someone is single or has a family, and whether they own or rent. The discussion also touched on economic indicators beyond living costs, like the Nikkei average’s decline and the job-openings-to-applicants ratio dipping below 1.0 in some regions, though opinions stayed split on how much wage gains are actually being felt versus how people are processing rising prices.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[NHK] A Normal Life Costs ¥280,000 a Month!? “I Just Can’t Seem to Save Money Anymore” — The Middle-Class Crisis: Where Did the “Normal Life” Go?.”

  • Report: SoftBank Pitcher Taito Murakami Accused of Assault and Abortion Scandal — 5ch: ‘This Is Fireable’

The digital edition of Weekly Bunshun reported on September 2 that Taito Murakami, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks’ first-round pick in the 2024 draft, allegedly broke into a former girlfriend’s apartment using a spare key and threatened to kill her. The woman has filed a police report, and another former girlfriend has reportedly come forward with similar accusations. The timing of the report — landing right after Murakami’s first-ever appearance in an official first-team game — drew extra attention. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board, users pointed out that SoftBank’s first-round draft picks keep running into trouble with either their conduct or their playing time, and comparisons to past scandals at other teams became a hot topic.

After their relationship ended, a man broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home using a spare key and went on a rampage. He punched her friend, choked her, and threatened, “I’ll kill you.” The ex-girlfriend has filed a police report…

Early afternoon on July 4, the sound of someone unlocking the apartment door suddenly rang out. “Huh?” The woman who lived there turned toward the entryway in surprise, and a man’s voice she knew all too well echoed through the room.

“Who’s there? Who the hell is here?!”

    Huh?? (´⊙ω⊙`)
That looks nothing like his player guide photo.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Bunshun report concerns trouble stemming from a relationship, and the details could still shift depending on how police proceedings unfold and what explanation Murakami himself gives. What drew the most attention on the thread was the pattern of SoftBank first-round picks struggling with either conduct or playing time — with users listing pitcher Naoki Sato (an assault case involving his fiancée) and pitcher Kyuda Kazama (misconduct) among others, alongside remarks about the unfortunate timing right after Murakami’s first-team debut. That said, this list was compiled by posters on 5ch, not something the club has officially verified or released, so it should be read with that caveat in mind. Comparisons were also drawn to Seibu’s Hotaka Yamakawa and his past troubles, but since the two cases differ in nature and in where they stand with investigators and their respective clubs, a simple comparison should be treated with caution.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “[Bunshun] SoftBank first-round pick Taito Murakami hit with assault/abortion scandal (Threatened “I’ll ●ill you” with a knife, two former girlfriends come forward one after another) [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Capcom Reportedly Set to Bring Resident Evil Titles to Switch 2 One After Another, Sparking Buzz

Capcom is reportedly planning to bring a large number of Resident Evil series titles to the Nintendo Switch 2, a claim that lit up 5ch’s hardware/industry board. The trigger was first-week sales data for this year’s Resident Evil Requiem — 155,373 units on PS5 versus 38,793 on Switch 2. Combined with Sony’s announced move away from disc drives, posters speculated that users who prefer buying physical copies might migrate to Switch 2, and the thread also lit up with wishes for old-game remakes and predictions about future ports.

    Re: #88
Seems like it keeps selling steadily across a lot of countries over the long run. They're probably not judging things by first-week numbers alone, and if a port is doable, there's no real reason not to release it.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The premise behind this discussion is the actual sales gap in first-week figures for this year’s Resident Evil Requiem: 155,373 units on PS5 versus 38,793 units on Switch 2. Looking at those numbers alone, PS5 appears to be winning by a landslide, but posters’ interest was really directed at what comes next — specifically, with Sony signaling plans to drop the disc drive, which platform physical-media buyers would migrate to. Capcom’s long-running business model of profiting from ports and remakes of older titles was also a hot topic, alongside discussion of past franchises like Okami, Onimusha, and Ace Attorney. It’s also worth noting that claims along the lines of “Switch 2 is outselling PS5” appeared in the thread, but no concrete figures or sources were given to back them up — they should be read as posters’ personal impressions rather than verified data.

  • Tomomi Itano’s New Dress Panned for ‘Wearable to Funerals Too’ Label — Quietly Fixed by Just Deleting the Word ‘Funeral’

Former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano (35) shared a new one-piece dress from her self-produced lifestyle brand on Instagram, but the tagline — “can be worn for every formal occasion, even funerals” — drew a wave of etiquette complaints on social media, with people saying things like “that’s not appropriate funeral wear.” After the backlash, the copy was quietly revised to “can be worn for formal occasions,” simply dropping the word “funeral” from the original four-part phrase. On the 5ch thread, discussion ranged from the core question of whether the black dress actually works as mourning attire, to a side debate over the grammatically “improper” way of saying “can be worn” in Japanese, to jokes about whether you can really fix a set four-character phrase for life’s major ceremonies just by deleting one character.

Japanese funerals are way too gloomy.
We could stand to send people off a little more cheerfully.

Fix 'kireru' too — should be 'kirareru' (she used the casual dropped-ra form instead of the grammatically "correct" one)

No, it's the 'wedding' part that doesn't work

The top looks kind of like a T-shirt, so it wouldn't work for a wedding either.
It's dressy enough for a nice lunch out, but not formal enough for an actual formal occasion.

    103AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:09
    Re: #61
I get the argument that "dropped-ra is totally normal in everyday speech now," but by the rules of standard Japanese grammar it's still considered incorrect.
And to people who are bothered by it, someone using dropped-ra can come across as uneducated.
So in public writing, it's safer not to use it.

    Background and Key Points

At Japanese funerals, general etiquette calls for avoiding shiny fabrics or revealing designs and instead wearing subdued mourning wear or semi-formal black attire. Itano’s new one-piece was marketed as a versatile piece that could go from everyday wear to formal ceremonial occasions, but opinions on the thread were mainly split over whether it actually holds up as mourning attire. Also discussed was the backstory of how the mistaken phrase “kankonsai” — missing one character from the proper four-character term “kankonsōsai” (the four major life ceremonies: coming-of-age, weddings, funerals, and rites) — was corrected after being flagged on social media. A second, unrelated thread of conversation was a long-running grammar debate over whether “kireru” or “kirareru” (both meaning “can be worn”) is the grammatically correct form — the so-called “dropped-ra” issue. This kind of derailment into Japanese-language nitpicking is a common pattern on threads like this, and this one was no exception. Note: several unverified posts about Itano’s personal life and relationships also appeared in the thread, but since they couldn’t be confirmed, they have been excluded from this article.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread ““That’s not appropriate for a funeral” — Tomomi Itano’s new dress sparks etiquette debate, wording changed from “can be worn for every occasion, even funerals” to “can be worn for occasions” after criticism.”

  • Ochiai’s Chunichi: ‘We Win It Every Other Year — And Finish Runner-Up the Rest of the Time.’ Nagoya Fans: ‘Yeah…’

A remark from Hiromitsu Ochiai, who managed the Chunichi Dragons for eight years — “We win the pennant every other year. Even in the years we don’t, we’re basically in second place” — sparked a lively Chunichi discussion on 5ch’s Nanjo (live sports commentary) board. Some posters argued that attendance held up well under Ochiai’s regime, while others countered with data showing it actually declined year after year. The debate centered on whether “winning baseball that’s monotonous” or “losing baseball full of variety” draws more fans, with many also pointing to the current team’s weak bullpen and thin roster depth.

Chunichi's stats aren't even that bad — so why can't they win?
Props to the fans for still showing up to watch.
    58AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:45
    Re: #50
I'd say this actually draws more fans than a team with bad stats barely scraping by wins.
Fans who go to the ballpark want extra-base hits more than wins.
    69AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:51
    Re: #50
Management is poor and the roster's thin, so if anyone goes down there's no backup, and a lot of guys are injury-prone.
Even when they get hits, they can't cash in the crucial run, so it's just inefficient.
    51AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:42
Why has Yano-sensei been so blatantly cozying up to Chunichi these past few years?

Was that back when Brown was managing Hiroshima?
Ochiai got hit with a "That's not allowed!" complaint, and he pushed back hard, threatening to take it all the way to an administrative lawsuit until Hiroshima caved and apologized in tears.
Yano, meanwhile, just goes "I didn't do it! Idiot!"
    What is he, a kid?

Hara's Giants were reinforcing like crazy back then.
Ochiai only got Wada brought in for him.

Though by the later years the entire outfield had turned over.
Even in the infield, Ibata left at some point — wasn't it basically just Araki and Tanishige who kept playing every single year?
And on the mound, almost everyone but Iwase changed too.
    81AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:57
    Re: #70
A lot of players stayed in the lineup all year long.
I used to think the starting lineup being nearly the same faces every day felt stale, but I guess that was actually the sign of a rock-solid regular lineup that made them strong.
    83AnonymousSep 2, 2026 11:59
    Re: #70
Isn't developing injury-resistant players a legitimate skill in itself?
No matter how talented someone is, it means nothing if they're always hurt.
You'd get yelled at if you called this year's Hanshin "lucky" just because Satoteru and Morishita didn't go down.
    86AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:03
Obviously it's better to just be strong.

    Re: #91
Step one: let go of your past glory (those three straight pennants).
Step two: recognize that you're on par with the Chunichi Dragons — a comedy team in this league, same as us.
    101AnonymousSep 2, 2026 12:09
    Re: #91
First off, you're way too insular — start building a fanbase outside the prefecture.
Then there's all the drug-related scandals and other messes, clean those up too.
And beyond that, you just have to force your way into signing players who can actually draw a crowd.

Background and key points of this discussion

Hiromitsu Ochiai managed the Chunichi Dragons from 2004 to 2011, winning four league pennants and one Japan Series title, and finishing no worse than second place even in years the team didn’t win it all — a record that lines up with the quote in the thread title. In recent years, by contrast, Chunichi has repeatedly finished under .500 and even landed in last place, a stark contrast to the Ochiai era’s results. Where opinions split in the thread was over whether a high win rate actually translates into higher attendance. Posters who recalled attendance being “good” under Ochiai clashed with others citing data showing a steady decline, and the argument was never settled. Some also pointed to poor bullpen management and a thin roster, making this more than a simple “strength vs. popularity” debate.
