  • Third-Party Devs’ ‘PS Has Few New Users’ Claim Meets Pushback Citing Official Data

When Nihon Falcom shifted its flagship series from a PS-centered rollout to a self-led multiplatform strategy, it sparked discussion on 5ch’s game/hardware industry board (the “Gehaban”) about claims that “third parties say PlayStation gets few new users.” The thread debated which figure better reflects reality — SIE’s published PS5 new-user ratio (about 42%, roughly 31.5 million people, covering November 2020 through the end of December 2024) or Switch 2’s new-user count (about 16%, roughly 3.8 million people, in its first year on sale) — along with disagreements over the definition of “new user” and the gap between domestic and overseas sales ratios.

Kondo: Basically, the title that really established that approach was the Trails in the Sky remake.
Up to now we'd built out the Trails series mainly around PS5, but with Trails in the Sky we took on the challenge of leading the rollout ourselves, worldwide, including Switch and PC (Steam).

New users are basically the kids who get born and grow up every year.
These days plenty of parents hand their kid a smartphone or tablet first, then buy them a Switch.
A PS doesn't get bought unless the kid specifically begs for one.

So PS users are enjoying Falcom's games, but other PS users see that and don't think "maybe I should try it too"? That just makes it a dying village (a shrinking, isolated community) after all.

Kids buying a PS themselves basically doesn't happen.
Parents buy their kids a Switch, and a PS gets bought by adults with money to spend freely.
And those adults end up deciding their phone is good enough anyway.

These are just the "new user" figures Sony (PlayStation) has officially disclosed.
    ■ PS5 New Users
    * Just over 40% (about 42%)
The share of PS5 buyers who are pure newcomers (didn't own a PS4) or switched over from another platform.
    * Roughly 31.5 million people
The number of new users you get by applying that percentage to PS5's cumulative sales at the time (74.9 million units).
    ■ Data collection period
    * November 2020 – end of December 2024
The cumulative official figure built up over about 4 years since PS5's launch.

PS5: 42% new over 4 years, 31.5 million new users

Switch 2: about 16% new in 1 year
Roughly 3.8 million people (*the remaining 84% carried over from the original Switch)

    Re: #53
So this is why they couldn't break away from PS4 for so long and kept doing cross-gen (same-gen dual) releases.

PS4 owners don't see enough appeal in the PS5 to upgrade, and new users coming in only play mobile gacha games.
As a result, PS5-exclusive games don't sell, everything ends up multiplatform, there's no game you can point to and say "buy a PS5 to play this," and older titles get ignored outside of sales.

And that's how we ended up here.

If there really are 31.5 million new users like SIE claims, but both physical and digital sales are still sluggish, then of course third parties are going to have something to say about it…

    Re: #82
They're probably just citing MAU (monthly active user) figures, but calling that "PS5 new users" is way too misleading.
That's exactly why they don't pull in as many new users as third parties expect, and why companies like Capcom end up disappointed.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The backdrop here is that, in the PS5 generation, third-party flagship titles have broadly shifted toward multiplatform releases, with a particularly noticeable trend in Japan of major RPGs being ported to Switch and PC. The “new user” figures cited in the thread are cumulative numbers SIE has disclosed in materials such as investor presentations, and they may include people upgrading from an existing console — meaning they don’t necessarily equal the number of genuinely new entrants to the platform. The difference in counting periods — one year for Switch 2 versus four years for PS5 — also makes a simple comparison difficult. The thread also saw disagreements over unit-sales figures and regional market share, but many posts cited no sources, so the numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.

  • Shohei Ohtani’s August Stats: .248 Average Marks Another Monthly Worst

Shohei Ohtani’s August batting line — a .248 average, 7 home runs, 15 RBIs, an .830 OPS, and a .240 average with runners in scoring position — set a new season-low for the second straight month, following July, sparking discussion on 5channel’s “Nanmoi” (livegalileo) sports board. The thread split between defenders who argued that an .830 OPS and 7 homers are still solid numbers even in a slump, and critics who pointed to his monthly WAR dropping outside the top 100 and brought up past controversies over his training methods. The debate went beyond raw stats, touching on whether his production justifies his salary and whether his numbers should be discounted given they were padded by strong performances against the Rockies.

    Re: #96
Though that's roughly when he moved to the Yankees and got mediocre too

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Ohtani has repeatedly made headlines this season for monthly batting “slumps,” and this August’s line (.248 average, 7 home runs, 15 RBIs, .830 OPS) is described as a new personal season-low, following July’s mark. His contract is reportedly worth over $700 million over 10 years (most of it deferred), and this scale of deal is exactly why fans debate whether his output is ‘worth’ the money. The thread split mainly over two points: (1) how to judge the batting numbers themselves — some praised the .830 OPS and 7 home runs, while others focused on his low monthly WAR ranking; and (2) whether the slump stems from his personal life and conditioning, or from structural factors like injury and workload. Worth noting: the comment that he ‘just padded his stats against the Rockies’ isn’t pure speculation — it references the fact that the Rockies’ home ballpark, Coors Field, is well known as a hitter-friendly park. Also, since WAR and similar metrics can vary depending on calculation method, the rankings and figures cited in the comments should be read as rough approximations rather than exact numbers.

  • Release the “Super Males”: Female Invasive Trout Wiped Out in World-First US Eradication

A research team at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) in the US kept releasing “super males” (YY males, which can only father sons) into two rivers infested with invasive brook trout — and after six years, females had vanished completely. With no poison and no nets, this is being called the world’s first case of eradicating an invasive fish purely by manipulating its genetic sex ratio. On 5ch’s science news board, the result drew plenty of surprise, along with calls to try the same trick on Japan’s own invasive species like largemouth bass, and questions about whether it could ever be applied to the human Y chromosome.

Six years after the “super male” releases began, females have been wiped out entirely — a world-first success in eliminating an invasive trout

Research from Idaho’s Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) and others has confirmed that female invasive brook trout have completely disappeared from two rivers where “super males” (YY males, which only sire male offspring) were continually released.

Fish released to boost numbers ended up wiping out the very fish they targeted.

I see, so this is a different approach from the sterile insect technique used on screwworm flies.

This was actually done before with destructive fly species.

The "women are the problem" crowd on 5ch (a derisive nickname for chronic anti-women posters) is basically dreaming of a world with nothing but super-males and males, after all.
Something like technology that lets men give birth to sons only.

Background and key points of the discussion

The technique exploits the fact that any male carrying a Y chromosome can only father sons; by continually releasing YY males, the female share of the population shrinks generation after generation until it hits zero. What makes it novel is that it wipes out the invasive species without herbicides or poison, hitting only the target fish. That said, as commenters in the thread noted, this success story was limited to a small, isolated stream that outside fish can’t swim into — it’s easy to mistakenly read this as a method ready to use in connected river systems, but it isn’t. A similar concept was previously used against flies via the sterile insect technique (irradiating males to destroy their fertility), so the YY-male method can be seen as a fish version of that same idea. Some posters asked whether the approach could work on humans, but since a Y chromosome alone lacks the X-chromosome genes required to sustain life, no individual could actually develop that way, so the method doesn’t carry over. Others hoped to see it applied to Japan’s own invasive species like largemouth bass, but pointed out that as long as anglers keep restocking them in the wild, putting it into practice would be tough — suggesting the real obstacle isn’t the science itself but how it would actually be carried out.

On September 2, 2026, at Yokohama BUNTAI, in the WBA world minimumweight title bout, division No. 1 contender Takeshi Ishii knocked out No. 2 ranked Wilfredo Mendez in 1 minute 5 seconds of the first round, capturing the title in his first world title challenge. It’s being called the fastest KO ever by a Japanese boxer in a world title fight, with some reports even calling it a case of “surpassing Naoya (Inoue).” On 5ch’s live-thread, discussion dwelt less on the win itself and more on the small stature typical of the minimumweight division and the structural difficulty Japanese boxers face winning at lightweight and above, turning into a long back-and-forth between posts mocking Ishii’s height and weight and posts pushing back against that mockery.

The average Japanese man is 171cm, which is about lightweight average in boxing, yet extremely few Japanese boxers have won world titles at lightweight or above — compared to a huge spike in Japanese world champions below featherweight.

Can we just make flyweight the lightest division already?

And on top of that, the WBA is a garbage organization that loves stuffing one division with a Super Champion, a Regular Champion, an Interim Champion, an Emeritus Champion, and who knows how many more.
I bet they'll eventually invent an elementary-schoolers-only Junior Champion, or a 'Nagasaki Champion' for whoever's best in Nagasaki Prefecture.

Japanese world title fight wins since 2000:

    Below lightweight: 300+ wins
    Lightweight and above: 7 wins

Even counting Ishida, it's only 9 wins at lightweight and above.

Calling that a win is downright embarrassing. Getting dropped by an amateur, ending up with a black eye, resorting to elbows and other fouls, and only surviving on a judges' decision — pathetic.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The WBA runs its own ranking system that lets multiple champions — “Super,” “Regular,” “Interim,” and “Emeritus” — coexist within a single weight division, and Ishii’s title here is one belt within that structure. Because boxing divisions are split by weight, Japan tends to have a deeper pool of contenders and champions in the lighter divisions, where smaller-framed fighters cluster, while the scarcity of Japanese champions at middleweight and above owes largely to structural differences in body frame. The thread’s recurring claim that smaller fighters have an easier path to a world title shot reflects that structural reality, but there’s no objective metric for comparing skill level across weight classes, so much of the comparison remains impressionistic. It’s also worth noting that a KO time of 1:05 depends heavily on the gap in ability between the two fighters, so it shouldn’t simply be generalized as proof of overall strength.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Sokuho+) thread “[Boxing] Surpassing Naoya! Takeshi Ishii’s 65-Second KO — Fastest Ever by a Japanese Boxer in a World Title Fight, Wins Title on First Try: “The Happiest I’ve Ever Been in My Life”.”

  • Fukushima University Insult Row: Takeda Juku Founder Defends Comments as “Maliciously Edited”

A video featuring Fumitaku Takada — known online as “Fu-min” — who appears on the YouTube channel “wakatte.TV,” went viral after he and others made insulting remarks about Fukushima University, and the video was taken down on September 1. Takada posted an explanation on X, but the phrase “not in the way I intended” only poured fuel on the fire, and the backlash hasn’t let up. It has since come out that Naohiro Hayashi — founder of the cram school chain Takeda Juku and second-generation host of the YouTube show “Reiwa no Tora” — defended the video as having been “maliciously edited out of context.” The thread pushes back hard against that defense and notes that the mayors of both Fukushima City and Iwaki City issued their own statements.

The uproar over the Fukushima University insult from wakatte.TV — featuring Takeda Juku staff Fumitaku Takada and Takeshi Yamabi — shows no sign of calming down (in the video they go by the nicknames “Fu-min” and “Bii-yama”).

After the remarks insulting Fukushima University sparked controversy, the video was deleted on the 1st, and Takada posted an explanation on the X account “Takada Fu-min.” Some media outlets called it an “apology.” But the line “not in the way I intended” set off another round of backlash, with people asking, “Well then, what WAS your intention?”

The one who came to Takada’s defense is Naohiro Hayashi, founder of Takeda Juku and second-generation host of the YouTube channel “Reiwa no Tora.”

No apology video or comment from Fu-min?

Background and Key Points of This Story

wakatte.TV, the channel featuring Takada and others, has close ties to Takeda Juku, the university entrance-exam cram school, and Naohiro Hayashi — who stepped in to defend them — is not only Takeda Juku’s founder but also known as the second-generation host of the investment show “Reiwa no Tora.” In the thread, many remain skeptical of the “taken out of context” defense, pointing out that the video had excuse-like captions running from the very start, which suggests to some that it may have been deliberate. Beyond the Fukushima University president, the mayors of both Fukushima City and Iwaki City have issued statements of protest, turning this from a simple online firestorm into a situation where local government officials are now responding publicly. Separately from the core issue — the insult to the university — the thread has also branched into a debate over whether TEPCO or Fukushima Prefecture bears more responsibility for the nuclear accident following the Great East Japan Earthquake, a tangent worth flagging since it has pulled the discussion away from the original topic.

Hanshin Tigers outfielder Shota Morishita clashed with the home plate umpire during the September 2 game against the Yakult Swallows (Jingu Stadium), and the confrontation nearly boiled over. Teammate Teruaki Sato stepped in to mediate. This isn’t the first time Morishita has butted heads with an umpire, and on the 5ch “Geisports Sokuho+” thread, reactions of “here we go again” piled up. The piece also notes that on TBS’s “Sunday Morning,” commentator Hiromitsu Ochiai remarked, “I don’t think this guy’s going to change,” and the discussion touched on both criticism of Morishita’s own conduct and doubts about the umpire’s questionable calls.

If a hit-by-pitch gets a pass because it's "something that could ruin someone's life, but wasn't done out of deliberate malice," then the same logic should apply to an umpire's call you don't like.

He probably can't say anything about it.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This isn’t the first time Morishita has clashed with a home plate umpire, and the thread was full of “here we go again” reactions. The “nether regions Tigers scandal” mentioned in the piece is an unrelated past off-field scandal and shouldn’t be confused with this incident. Opinion in the thread split between those criticizing Morishita’s own attitude and conduct, and those questioning the skill and handling of umpires who keep making borderline calls, with several posters calling for the early introduction of the automated ball-strike system (ABS). Even at the point of the news report and Hiromitsu Ochiai’s comments, the detailed sequence of who erred first hadn’t been made clear, so it’s worth noting that posts flatly declaring “Morishita is entirely to blame” are ultimately just speculation and impressions from 5ch, nothing more.

  • Hanshin Pitcher Ryuto Ihara Accused of Assault: FRIDAY Publishes On-Scene Photos with a ‘Drunk Woman’

On September 2, FRIDAY published an article — complete with on-scene photos — alleging that Hanshin Tigers ace left-hander Ryuto Ihara assaulted a woman in her 20s while she was drunk. Weekly Bunshun had reportedly been covering the same story, and the overlap between the two outlets’ reporting became a talking point in itself. Reactions on 5ch were split: some questioned the credibility of the report, others pointed to a recurring pattern of women-related trouble in pro baseball, and the view that “the woman may have been at fault too” drew strong pushback. Posts also frequently brought up past cases involving Shinnosuke Abe and Hotaka Yamakawa for comparison.

This article is based on FRIDAY’s own reporting, and as of September 2 neither the team nor the player had issued an official comment. Even with photographic evidence, at the weekly-magazine stage no judicial determination has been made — it’s worth remembering this remains, for now, an “allegation.” Within the thread, opinion split between those questioning the credibility of the report itself and those criticizing the recurring pattern of women-related trouble surfacing in pro baseball, with the view that “the woman may have been at fault too” drawing strong pushback. The cases of Shinnosuke Abe (Yomiuri Giants) and Hotaka Yamakawa brought up for comparison are separate incidents with their own distinct circumstances and have no direct connection to this case. That Bunshun had been pursuing similar reporting also became a talking point, but this only shows overlapping coverage and doesn’t corroborate the underlying facts.

  • Suzu Hirose Cast as Japan’s Top Idol in Netflix’s ‘Fujiyama Boy,’ Starring Wataru Ichinose

Netflix has announced “Fujiyama Boy,” a human comedy series set to stream in January 2027. Wataru Ichinose stars as Kanta Kakuhata, a young man who’s been a shut-in for eight years with zero romantic experience, in a story about his quest to marry Mami Hamamiya — played by Suzu Hirose — who is “Japan’s top idol.” Following the announcement, discussion on the thread focused less on the show’s premise itself and more on whether an absolute “Japan’s top idol” figure even exists anymore, with many commenters noting there’s no longer anyone with the singular dominance that, say, Seiko Matsuda once had.

Suzu Hirose to play Japan’s top idol… Wataru Ichinose stars in Netflix’s “Fujiyama Boy,” greenlit for production — she admits, “Why me…?”

Netflix has announced that its series “Fujiyama Boy,” set for exclusive global release in January 2027, will star Wataru Ichinose in the lead role, with Suzu Hirose as the heroine.

The series is a human comedy in which Kanta Kakuhata — a shut-in for eight years with zero romantic experience — sets out to fulfill his mother’s wish by trying to marry Mami Hamamiya, Japan’s top idol, played by Hirose.

Going solo requires overwhelming vocal ability, so those acts get marketed as "artists" or VTubers instead — people like Ado or tuki. They don't even show their faces, so looks aren't a factor at all. Conversely, looks alone won't sell you as a solo act.

    Re: #82
Isn't that basically a fictionalized "Date With Drew"?

    Background and Talking Points

The big draw here is twofold: Wataru Ichinose’s track record of landing back-to-back Netflix hits — Sanctuary, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Tokyo Swindlers — and Suzu Hirose taking a sharp turn from her usual relatable, girl-next-door roles to play the exaggerated character of “Japan’s top idol.” The point that split the thread the most was the observation that nobody could actually name today’s reigning “top idol” — names like Seiko Matsuda and Nogizaka46 came up, but the general consensus was that with so many groups now competing at once, it’s become structurally difficult for any single individual to break out and dominate. Behind this is a shift toward a mass-production idol business model built around handshake events and social media, which makes it harder to manufacture an “absolute center” with the solo vocal power and visual presence needed to carry a career alone. One point worth clarifying: the “Japan’s top idol” title in the show is purely a fictional premise — it doesn’t refer to any real ranking or hierarchy.

  • Bunshun: ‘Draft-1 Pitcher Assaulted a Woman’ → Revealed to Be SoftBank’s Taito Murakami

Weekly Bunshun’s report that “a first-round draft pick pitcher assaulted a woman” became a hot topic on the NanJ board (“Everything Live Broadcast,” a well-known 5channel sports-chat forum). The article itself didn’t name the player, but posters pieced together fragments of information and worked out it was Taito Murakami — the pitcher SoftBank picked first overall in the 2024 draft straight out of high school, now in his second pro year. Later in the thread, a link to TBS-affiliated news coverage was shared, bringing further developments. The debate split between those questioning the individual player’s character and those questioning the team’s training and oversight given how many players it manages, with several names of other former top draft picks from the same generation who’d been cut over scandals or injuries also coming up.

Background and Key Points of This Story

This story originated with Weekly Bunshun’s report that “a first-round draft pick pitcher assaulted a woman.” The Bunshun article itself withheld the player’s name, but thread posters used circumstantial evidence to identify him as Taito Murakami, SoftBank’s 2024 first-round pick now in his second year, and later in the thread a link to TBS-affiliated coverage was shared with further factual updates. Worth noting: at the time of Bunshun’s report, this was still at the “allegation” stage — no criminal proceedings or official team statement had confirmed the details. Some posts in the thread used language like “attempted murder,” but that’s posters’ own speculation, not something the reporting itself confirmed about the actual charges. The debate split between whether responsibility lies with the 19-year-old player himself or with the team’s training system given how many players it manages, with more posts leaning toward the latter. Several other former top draft picks from the same generation who were cut over scandals or injuries came up repeatedly, reflecting a broader distrust of how NPB teams develop young players.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

CloverWorks is an animation studio under Sony Music-affiliated Aniplex, and it’s the studio handling production of “Pokémon: Wildcard.” In the thread, many posts confused Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), which operates PlayStation, with the Sony Music group that owns CloverWorks — treating them as the same company; unverified claims of an “SIE withdrawal” circulated without any clear basis. Another recurring thread was the history of Sony Music setting up (and later dissolving) a joint venture to support Pocketpair’s “Palworld,” fueling sarcastic remarks like “they got dumped” and “outside work for cash.” Opinions split between those arguing that Sony-affiliated studios producing Nintendo IP shows “Nintendo turning into a third party,” and those countering that “it’s just a subcontracted job.” Note that this thread shows how easily confusion spreads between several separate companies under the Sony umbrella (SIE, Sony Music, Aniplex), and as of this report there is no information confirming SIE has withdrawn from the Pokémon movie business.
