  • Saint Seiya Creator Masami Kurumada Once Paid ¥313.97 Million in Taxes — Story Goes Viral

A story about Masami Kurumada, creator of Saint Seiya, has gone viral on 5ch: in one year, his tax payment reportedly reached ¥313.97 million. This dates back to the era of Japan’s “high-income taxpayer disclosure system,” when the National Tax Agency published the names and amounts of top taxpayers — popularly nicknamed the “millionaires’ rankings.” According to a former editor, Kurumada turned down an offer from Shueisha to set up a company for tax-saving purposes, and was reportedly delighted to see his own name near the top of the rankings. The topic appears to have been sparked by recent news that a former editor on his titles had embezzled funds, which came to light during a tax investigation. The thread also lit up with discussion comparing Saint Seiya’s commercial scale to other titles from Weekly Shonen Jump’s golden age.

    It was really that popular??
    6AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:22
    That's insane.
Apparently Kurumada was obsessed with being #1 at everything — even reader popularity polls — so when Shueisha suggested he set up a company to save on taxes, he turned it down, and was thrilled to see his own name at the top of the tax rankings, according to a former editor.

Maybe that kind of flashy wealth is what led to the whole 'gold = strong' aesthetic in the series.

In anime too, shows like Ronin Warriors and Shurato were made to follow Seiya's lead,
and that trend of hero protagonists fighting in powered-armor-like suits continued into the mid-90s.

Saint Seiya wasn't the manga Kurumada wanted to draw — it was the manga he drew to sell.
What he really wanted to draw was Otokozaka.
I think that's why he kept drawing manga for so long afterward, as a kind of reaction.

    I think the order was
    Ring ni Kakero,
    Fuma no Kojiro,
    Seiya.

Kojiro didn't quite catch on, and people were wondering 'is this a flop?'
but then he hit it big with Seiya.
In the gap after Hokuto no Ken ended and before Dragon Ball had really taken off,
I remember Seiya briefly ruling supreme.

But as Dragon Ball's popularity rose,
Seiya seemed to fade away in inverse proportion.

    Re: #109
He came off as a hot-blooded, good-natured guy.
I think it was in a Fuma no Kojiro tankobon afterword where he wrote something like:
'I saw a kid at a used bookstore scraping together loose change to buy my manga.
Hey, that's fine by me — if a kid can read manga with the little money they've got, I'm all for it!'
That stuck with me, but I wonder how he'd feel about it in today's climate.

    Re: #109
It's less that he had a bad personality and more that he was the craftsman type — the embezzler in this case lied, claiming 'you can't discuss work with him properly without going through me,' and used that line to embezzle over and over.
That 'bad personality' image was probably just a byproduct of the perpetrator pulling that stunt repeatedly.

    Background and Talking Points

Japan had a “high-income taxpayer disclosure system” for tax filings up through the 2005 tax year, under which the names and tax amounts of individuals who paid income tax above a certain threshold were published in newspapers and elsewhere. Popularly nicknamed the “millionaires’ rankings,” this system was still in effect during Saint Seiya’s original run (1986–1990). In the thread, discussion centered on the anecdote that Masami Kurumada was delighted to appear on this list, branching out into debate over how big an impact Saint Seiya’s success had on the toy and anime markets, and how it stacked up in popularity against other titles from Weekly Shonen Jump’s golden age. Note that details of the embezzlement case that appears to have sparked the discussion (who embezzled, when, and how much) were only mentioned in fragments within the thread, and as of this writing no official follow-up report has been confirmed.

  • USD/JPY Plunges From the 157 Range to 153 in a Few Hours — 5ch Abuzz With Intervention Rumors

On the afternoon of September 3, 2026, the USD/JPY exchange rate rapidly strengthened from the 157 range to the 153 range within a matter of hours, prompting a breaking-news thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live News general) board. The rumored triggers were speculation about a further Bank of Japan rate hike and reports that U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent had urged Japan to raise rates. In the thread, users debated whether currency intervention had actually occurred, the reality of the “FIMA” framework that allows fundraising without selling U.S. Treasuries, and the impact on NISA (Japan’s tax-free investment accounts) and foreign-currency assets — with opinions split over whether the yen would strengthen further or revert to its previous level.

You don't need to worry about that so much —
Japan has a huge revenue base that can offset it to some degree.

Semiconductor demand itself hasn't disappeared, so stocks should trend up. There'll be a correction. The rate hike will drag things down some, but the old reflation-style policy wasn't sustainable anyway, so this is within expectations.

    58AnonymousSep 3, 2026 16:07
    Re: #49
    Re: #53
If you mean FIMA, that was only floated as a possible option during the last joint US-Japan intervention — it hasn't actually been used yet.
It was just a warning shot at the market: "this is available if we need it."
And part of the point of using FIMA is to avoid taking a loss on the face value of the Treasuries.
Even with FX gains on the table, holding to maturity looks better for Japan right now once you factor in the coupon.
It wouldn't even hurt the P&L.
And besides, Japan did actually sell Treasuries for this year's intervention —
something like ¥1.7 billion worth of T-bills.
    62AnonymousSep 3, 2026 16:09

    Re: #58
Wasn't it reported that they'd used that already?
I figured Japan couldn't sell any US Treasuries at all anymore.
Everyone else in the world is stockpiling gold, and Japan's just going down with the US Treasury ship.
Though gold's probably got a good chance of being contaminated with fake tungsten bars too, thanks to a certain country.
    87AnonymousSep 3, 2026 16:23
    Re: #74
They went in easy, blowing ¥10 trillion right out of the gate on the very first solo intervention.
That wasn't enough, so they used another ¥7 trillion, and then the US joined in too, turning it into a joint intervention.
Then Bessent and Katayama jointly announced "the FIMA framework is on the table next time, so be warned," and all the short-term players squared their positions.
Macro players are probably going to start moving their positions too now, which should add momentum.
By the way, South Korea also intervened the same day, selling dollars and buying won.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The trigger for this day’s sudden USD/JPY move is believed to be a combination of speculation about a further Bank of Japan rate hike and reports that U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent had told Japan not to hesitate on raising rates. The thread also touched on the “FIMA Repo Facility,” a mechanism that lets Japan borrow from the U.S. Federal Reserve to fund currency intervention without selling U.S. Treasuries — a framework whose operational guidelines were laid out during a past joint US-Japan intervention, and which is mentioned here as a way for Japan to secure intervention funds without taking a face-value loss on its Treasury holdings. That said, market participants themselves are divided on whether this move was actually driven by intervention or by interest-rate-differential speculation, and details discussed in the thread — such as intervention amounts of “¥10 trillion” or “¥7 trillion,” or claims about counterfeit material mixed into gold bars — remain unverified speculation and hearsay from an anonymous message board. Voices worried about the impact on NISA accounts, foreign-currency assets, and leveraged trading crossed paths with each other, and opinion was split over whether the yen’s earlier weakness would resume or reverse for good.

  • Juice=Juice’s “Pride Bright”: Plenty of Fans Thought “This Is the One That Takes Us to the Top”

On the Hello! Project board of 5ch, users discussed how many people, at the time, thought Juice=Juice’s July 12, 2023 single “Pride Bright / FUNKY FLUSHIN’” would be the song that took the group to the top. The thread brought up an anecdote that right after debuting the song live at Budokan, Arisawa hurt her neck and has needed a neck brace ever since, as well as claims that the song laid the groundwork for the live-clip strategy later used for “Moreme” (a later single, nicknamed by fans). The discussion ended up highlighting a gap in perspective between fans who experienced it in real time and newer fans who got into the group through more recent songs.

    18AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:27
I didn't quite think "this is our time to rule them all," but I did feel like "Juice=Juice's moment has arrived." At the same time, I also figured they'd probably throw us another curveball next.

The live footage was pretty shocking, honestly.
    20AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:29
They announced "the new song is decided!" on Hello! Station, but it actually premiered before the live performance on Rei Inoue's radio show — my first thought was "oh, they got handed a good one this time." The songwriter/composer hadn't been announced yet, but once the MV credits finally revealed it was Aoi Yamazaki, it all made sense.
    21AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:36
It's in the same vein as "Hito Sore" (short for "Hito Sorezore," an earlier Juice=Juice hit), but my take was "it doesn't quite reach Hito Sore's level" — and that impression never changed.
    22AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:38
I've only listened to this song once. Meanwhile, "Blur" I had on heavy rotation for a while.
    23AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:54
The fact that it didn't immediately click as "oh, we should be pushing live clips from here on" — very on-brand for UP-FRONT (their talent agency).
    24AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:57
Ever since Hayashi joined, everything just clicked into place and they became a group that could pull off anything. Before that, they were always a group missing some piece. Even so, the live performances were always good.
    37AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:03
Hello! Project's whole selling point is live performance, so I've always thought — back then and now — they should just run whatever promo it takes to funnel people toward the live shows.

I've been a "Kura Kura" fan since early July. Digging through the back catalog, there wasn't a single song, "Pride Bright" included, that rang a bell for me. Might be because I wasn't really into entertainment/pop culture before, but that also made it the perfect blank slate for getting into it fresh.

"Hito Sore" was the song that pulled in a ton of female fans outside the usual idol-otaku crowd back then — you'd never even heard it? It got a lot of play on wired/cable radio.
    57AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:11
USEN was really only pushing "Bitansan," "Hito Sore," and "Pop Music," so if you don't even know those, you probably know even less about the rest.
    58AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:19
It plays as the opening for "Smile Bonsoir," but it doesn't really fit Risachi's image, so I kind of wish they'd swap it for something else — like "Eeny Meeny Miny Moe ~Koi no Rival Sengen~" or something.
    59AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:53
Before "Moreme," nobody was even thinking in terms of "will this go viral or not." It was more like, "eh, decent song, I guess."
    60AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:55
    "Blur" is better.
    61AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:57
I heard "Moreme" first and "Blur" afterward, and I still like "Blur" better too.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The foundation of this thread is Juice=Juice’s July 12, 2023 digital single “Pride Bright / FUNKY FLUSHIN’.” As the anecdote about Arisawa hurting her neck right after debuting the song live at Budokan — and needing a neck brace ever since — suggests, the choreography is said to have been demanding from the start. What split the thread was a single question: did people think, at the time, that this song would take Juice=Juice to the top? Some felt “Juice=Juice’s moment had arrived” (comment 18), while the view that “I never think that, no matter what they release” (comment 14) also remains strong. A second thread of discussion concerns the song’s relationship to “Moreme,” whose live clips are said to have taken off on social media in later years — some argue (comments 13 and 15) that “Pride Bright” laid the groundwork for that. That said, this is ultimately a matter of fan impression, and it’s worth noting nothing in the thread actually confirms it as fact. On top of that, a newer fan who got into the group through more recent songs (comment 53) says they’d never even heard of this song at all, pointing to the kind of generational gap you’d expect from a group with such a long career.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “There were actually quite a few people who thought “this is the song that’ll take Juice=Juice to the top” when Juice=Juice announced “Pride Bright”.”

  • Kura Sushi’s Chiikawa Figures Flood Mercari Amid Staff Theft Allegations

In a collaboration campaign between Kura Sushi and Chiikawa, multiple people have complained on social media that they didn’t get a single figure even after spending over ¥10,000 on food — and now complete five-piece sets of the supposedly rare figures have turned up for sale on Mercari, fueling suspicion that store staff have been pulling them out themselves. On 5channel threads, some pointed to the capsule design itself as the real problem, since a hole in the capsule lets you tell what’s inside from the outside, while others speculated that only someone at the store-manager level — not part-time staff — could realistically pull this off. Many were also stunned that one Mercari seller explained their reason for listing the items as “a relative works at Kura Sushi.”

    9/3 (Thu) 11:55

Regarding the ongoing collaboration campaign between Kura Sushi and “Chiikawa,” multiple people on social media have said, “I didn’t get a single figure even after spending over ¥10,000.”

Complete five-piece sets of these “rare” figures have also, for some reason, shown up for resale on flea-market apps, sparking a backlash on social media.

He probably had no choice but to say something, since otherwise it'd look like straight-up fraud.

There's no other explanation for how he'd have that many complete sets to sell.

Background and Key Points of This Controversy

This controversy exposes a structural weakness in probability-based “lottery-style” promotions. If the capsules holding the figures have a hole that lets you identify the bag inside from the outside, then anyone on the store side handling restocking would be able to pull them out. As pointed out in the thread, Kura Sushi runs every store as a directly-operated location rather than through franchises, so unlike convenience-store lottery-ticket theft cases, if such removal really did happen, it could raise questions about the head office’s own management oversight. That said, the Mercari seller’s stated reason — “a relative works at Kura Sushi” — is simply the seller’s own claim, and as of this writing it hasn’t been confirmed whether store staff were actually involved. Kura Sushi has not yet issued any official investigation results or statement, so it’s worth noting this remains in the realm of allegation for now.

  • Suspected Food Poisoning from Crab Ramen at Azabu-Juban Festival: 116 Sick, Minato Ward Hasn’t Reported to Health Ministry

After eating chilled crab ramen served at the “Azabu-Juban Summer Festival” (August 22–23) in Minato Ward, Tokyo, a wave of people have come forward reporting diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. According to the Minato Ward public health center, 116 people had reported symptoms as of the end of August, with the number expected to keep rising. Under the Food Sanitation Act, local governments must promptly report suspected food-poisoning outbreaks of 50 or more people to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare — but as of September 3, Minato Ward still hadn’t filed that report. On 5channel, posters questioned why the food was sold from an actual shop rather than a typical festival stall, why the vendor is still operating, and criticized the ward’s slow response.

Regarding the wave of people reporting food-poisoning symptoms — diarrhea, vomiting, fever — after eating “chilled crab ramen” served at the “Azabu-Juban Summer Festival” (August 22–23) in Azabu-Juban, Minato Ward, Tokyo, the ward disclosed that 116 people had come forward as of the end of August, with more expected. Wards are required to promptly notify the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare once 50 or more suspected food-poisoning cases occur, but as of the 3rd, no report had been filed.

According to the ward’s public health center, the first report came in shortly after noon on August 26. An estimated 40 servings of the chilled crab ramen were sold on the 22nd and around 500 on the 23rd; investigators are working to pin down the cause. The restaurant operator who served the dish acknowledged being investigated and apologized on X (formerly Twitter). The ramen is believed to have been cooked at a shop within the festival area and served at the venue.

The Food Sanitation Act and its enforcement regulations state that when 50 or more food-poisoning patients occur, or are deemed likely to, prefectures and special wards “must report immediately to the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare.”

Part of the appeal was probably that it wasn't food stalls but an actual shopping-district business, which felt more hygienic.

    Background and Key Issues

The Food Sanitation Act and its enforcement regulations require prefectures and special wards to report “immediately” to the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare once 50 or more food-poisoning patients occur, or are deemed likely to. In this case, more than a week has passed since the first report on August 26, and even after complaints topped 100, no report from Minato Ward to the ministry has been confirmed — raising practical questions about how strictly that “immediate” reporting requirement is actually being enforced. Posters on the thread noted that the food was sold from an actual store rather than a typical festival stall, meaning it had access to proper refrigeration and freezing — a detail that complicates any simple explanation blaming outdoor-stall conditions in the summer heat. It’s also worth noting that a suspected food-poisoning case doesn’t legally require a business to close unless a formal suspension order is issued, which is why there appears to be a gap between the alleged violation and the shop continuing to operate. The article alone doesn’t establish what caused the outbreak, or whether the reporting delay was intentional or simply a procedural lag.

*This article was compiled from excerpts and summaries of the 5channel (News Express+) thread “[Crab Ramen] 116 Sick as of End of August — Suspected Food Poisoning at Tokyo’s Azabu-Juban Festival, Minato Ward Hasn’t Reported to Health Ministry.”

  • PS5 Info Show Airs Tonight at 10PM — 5ch Asks: ‘How Badly Do You Want Shine Post?’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board after news broke that Sony’s PS5 info program “State of Play” airs tonight at 10PM. The thread’s original poster pointed to PS5’s aggressive momentum — citing things like “PlayStation locked down the FF7 Remake’s promotional rights” — and posters speculated together about what the broadcast might reveal. One focus was whether Shine Post, a music game believed to be under timed exclusivity for Switch 2, would get a PlayStation announcement, with some noting that a year has passed since its launch, right around when that exclusivity period would expire. Other topics discussed in parallel included a possible GTA6 PS5 console bundle, a new RPG from Konami, unannounced slots at Tokyo Game Show, and whether a Switch 2 version of the Persona series exists.

That flow wouldn't be weird at all.

Seriously, nobody cares about this, lol

    Background and Key Points

“State of Play” is a PlayStation info program Sony broadcasts irregularly, typically used as a venue for new title reveals and follow-up updates. Shine Post, the music game that came up in the thread, launched first on Switch 2, and titles like this often carry a “timed exclusivity” deal under which versions for other platforms unlock after a set period. Posters speculated about an announcement because the timing lines up with when that exclusivity would lift, but none of this is an official announcement — it’s purely 5ch speculation. The weekly sales comparison between Switch 2 and PS5 that came up toward the end of the thread is likewise just a claim made in a post, with no source cited. Some of the more combative language typical of the Geha board has been trimmed, but the content itself centers on speculation about next-gen console sales strategy and title rollouts — the truth won’t be known until the actual broadcast airs.

  • Juice=Juice’s Live-Venue Popularity Rankings Spark Debate on 5ch: “Pretty Much Everyone’s Popular Now”

On a 5ch chat thread about the Hello! Project group Juice=Juice, fans debated each member’s popularity at “genba” (live venues). The thread kicked off with a post claiming, “The era belongs to Ebamifu, but at the venues it’s already mostly the aces, Akagawashima” — sparking discussion over who’s really at the center right now, based on the breakdown of penlight colors and how fast individual cheki (photo cards) and EPs sell out. Others pushed back, arguing that “with even Kudo selling out both parts of the first run at Setagaya Egret Hall these days — this wildly inflated era of popularity — arguing over popularity gaps is pointless to begin with,” pointing out that penlight color counts alone don’t tell the whole story.

    The era belongs to Ebamifu,
but at the venues it's already mostly the aces, Akagawashima.

At the actual shows though, blue's more common.
    3AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:26
It's still the Yumeriai era, through and through.
    4AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:27
That was true for the Hello! Con and tour-announcement shows, but for Juice's solo lives, isn't it still orange?
    5AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:27
Funny how it's not like 🩵 is completely absent either.

at the actual shows it's more like
    Orange > Blue > White > Pink > Red > Yellow

I only go to Juice shows, but here's how venue popularity looks from where I stand:

    Danbara
    Inoue, Matsunaga
    Kudo, Kawashima
    Ebata
    Ishiyama, Arisawa, Endo
    Irie, Hayashi

    Re: #10
Kanazawa, Takagi, Miyamoto, Uemura, Inaba, Danbara, Inoue, Matsunaga, Kudo
that was the lineup people called the "Avengers" era.

    From there,

Kanazawa, Takagi, Miyamoto, Uemura, and Inaba got replaced
by Arisawa, Irie, Ebata, Ishiyama, and Endo, and it fizzled out.

Then a hit song brought it back to life.

    That's the official canon,
and yeah, it's playing out exactly like canon.
    11AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:40
Part of it's that red's a primary color and stands out, but I also get the feeling it might've overtaken pink.
    12AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:44
These days even Kudo sells out both parts of the first run at Setagaya Egret Hall — it's such a wildly inflated popularity boom that arguing over popularity gaps within it feels pointless.
Pretty much everyone's insanely popular at this point.
    13AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:46
There's a theory going around that people are just mistaking orange for red.
    14AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:46
The EPs sold out individually across the board too.
At this point about the only things left to compare are Instagram follower counts and penlight colors.
    15AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:47
    By the old-school definition,
    Danbara's the ace (the so-called "Ace-der"),

No denying the numbers are up.

    19AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:59

    20AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:01

But yeah, there's definitely a lot of it.

Caught the Takaishi City show and yeah, there was definitely a lot of red.
    58AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:15
Once you're actually at a Juice solo show, there's more blue than I expected.
    60AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:20
Nah, the current lineup is the best it's ever been.
    62AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:23
Guess racking up a hundred million views on TikTok barely matters if you're still dead last in popularity.
    67AnonymousSep 3, 2026 15:23
It's great that everyone's properly popular now, honestly.

    Background and Key Points

Penlight color at “genba” (live venues) is the classic yardstick Hello! Project fans use to eyeball each member’s popularity, not just for Juice=Juice — each member is assigned her own cheering color. That said, similar shades like orange and red are hard to tell apart from a distance, and as posts #13 and #20 point out, mix-ups happen easily. There’s also the point raised in posts #12 and #14 that with EPs and individual cheki now selling out for nearly every member in recent years, judging who’s the “ace” from color distribution alone has gotten difficult — worth remembering this reflects changes in supply and venue size rather than a straightforward popularity vote. Unsubstantiated rumors about the circumstances of specific members joining the group have been excluded from this article.

  • Wife-Older Marriages Hit Record 25.5% — 5ch: ‘Snag a Young Guy Before You’re Left on the Shelf’

News that the share of first marriages where the wife is older hit a record 25.5% sparked discussion on 5ch’s News Express+ board. Citing an interview with sociologist Masahiro Yamada, the article describes a shift away from the once-dominant pattern of husbands being older. Thread posters pointed to the gap in earning power between men and women in the marriage market, and to older generations who still bristle at “wife older than husband” pairings — though opinions split over how to read the numbers, with some noting that “a quarter is still a minority; same-age or younger wives still make up 75%.”

    CHANTO WEB

Age-gap marriages used to typically mean an older husband. But now, marriages where the wife is older are on the rise. Among first-time marriages, the share with an older wife hit a record 25.5%. Why are more men choosing older wives? What do they find in life with a younger husband? We asked sociologist Masahiro Yamada about changing views on marriage and the new shape of married life.

With the falling birthrate, there aren't enough workers or people to support the social security system, so we're heading toward a world where you work until you die.

If you don't want to work until you die, then:

working-age people need to have three or more kids,

the elderly who are around now should keep working until their healthy life expectancy runs out,

and society needs to stop tolerating the kind of slacking off NEETs get away with.

Pensions are a system that skims disposable income from the working-age population and redistributes it to the elderly.

The original point was to support people too old to work by cutting into working-age people's disposable income.

Now that healthy life expectancy has risen and people once considered too old to work can actually work,

pensions for under-80s — which needlessly skim working-age disposable income — should be scaled back,

and the excessive social security burden on the working-age population should be reduced.

    Re: #92
This is data for first marriages only. If you include remarriages, the husband's older in most cases, so overall it's not actually that high a share. High-status men keep snagging young women over and over through remarriage, while the divorced women left behind mostly can't remarry.
    124AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:33
They're really pushing a narrative here, but older wives are still a minority. Same-age and younger wives make up 75%. Even compared to the 1970s, half a century ago, it's only about 2.5 times higher. Dual-income households became the norm from the '90s onward, yet older wives are still rare.
    134AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:41
    Re: #124

Even 1-2 years bothers the older generation — a full 12-year gap would be unthinkable.

    Background and Key Points

The news is based on official marriage statistics limited to cases where both spouses are marrying for the first time — a distinction that isn’t obvious from the original article, since it differs from the picture once remarriages are factored in. Also, “a record 25.5%” cuts both ways: it means couples who are the same age or where the husband is older still account for 75%, so “older wives” haven’t become the mainstream. That’s exactly where thread opinion split — some read the shift as a genuine change in values, others as still a minor share within the margin of error. Cited factors include the asymmetry in earning power between men and women in the marriage market (high earners skew male) and lingering resistance from the older generation toward “wife older than husband” pairings — though it’s worth noting these are all just thread posters’ impressions, not claims backed by statistics.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “[Marriage] 25% of First-Time Married Couples Now Have an “Older Wife,” a Record High. Unpacking the Reality of “Reiwa-Era Marriage” Through Data — the “Men Work, Women Stay Home” Trap Blocking the Marriage Market.”

  • Sony Legal Filing: “No Reasonable Consumer Thinks Buying on PlayStation Store Means Owning the Game”

California’s AB 2426, which took effect in January 2025, requires clear warning labels before purchase whenever a digital sale uses the word “purchase” but what’s actually being sold is a revocable license to use. Citing this law, four PlayStation users sued Sony back in June. Sony’s response brief, filed in late August, points to the fact that two of the plaintiffs were each able to “purchase” the very same game 11 days apart, arguing that “no reasonable consumer in the digital age believes clicking a purchase button makes them the owner of a game.” On 5ch, alongside skepticism toward that logic, users pointed out that Steam had already rolled out warning labels and that Nintendo’s terms of service contain similar language — sparking debate over why Sony alone got sued.

On June 18th, four PlayStation users in California sued Sony. The whole dispute hinges on a single word. The PlayStation Store has a button labeled “Purchase,” followed by a “Confirm Purchase” prompt — but in reality, downloaded games are nothing more than a license to use that Sony can revoke at any time. And California’s AB 2426, in effect since January 2025, requires a clear warning whenever the word “purchase” actually just means a license.

In late August, Sony’s legal team filed a response brief, and its contents have stirred up controversy. Sony argues that in the digital age, no “reasonable consumer” believes that clicking the “Purchase” button makes them the owner of the game. And to prove it, the legal team pointed to two of the plaintiffs themselves as evidence.

    Re: #59
They're only getting sued because there's no warning label, that's the whole point Re: #13. If you're gonna say "everyone else does it too!", you need to actually show the others also lack a warning label — otherwise the argument means nothing.
    10AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:07
The first plaintiff bought Resident Evil Requiem for $69.99 on February 14th, and the second bought the exact same game at the same price 11 days later.
By Sony's logic, a true "owner" is someone who holds exclusive possession of something.
If the first buyer had truly become the owner of that game, it should have been impossible for the second buyer to purchase it 11 days later.
The fact that they both could buy it, Sony argues, proves both of them understood they were only buying a license — meaning the "Purchase" button deceived nobody. That's the conclusion Sony draws.

Everyone else kept it vague and avoided saying it outright — it was a gray area. But Sony was the only one who flat-out said "even if you buy it, it's not the user's property," which is why this keeps coming up as an issue.

If it were really the same, other platforms besides PlayStation would be getting sued too. Sony got sued because they were doing their own thing. Typical Sony. ("さすソニ" — a sarcastic "as expected of Sony" meme)

    – Add a clear warning label
    – Change the wording from "purchase" (to "rental," "license agreement," etc.)

Is this really something worth fighting all the way to court over?

    Re: #61
    They're selling a license, and that's what's being bought. This isn't a rental.

They just don't want to be found liable and have to pay damages. In other words, right now they're just flailing.

    Re: #61
If they call it a "rental" or something, people will start thinking there's a time limit on how long they can play, or that it needs to be returned. They can't be bothered explaining that to every single person one by one.

User: *clicks Purchase* Alright, bought it! It's mine now!

Sony: Yours? You sure about that? This is a [loan].

    User: …huh?

    Isn't that basically an old-school loan-shark move…
    93AnonymousSep 3, 2026 09:56
    Re: #86
Nintendo does the exact same thing though — are you saying Nintendo's a loan shark too?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

AB 2426 is a California consumer-protection law that took effect in January 2025. It requires businesses to display a clear warning before purchase whenever a digital good is labeled a “purchase” but is actually just a license. Steam got ahead of this back in October 2024 by adding a warning to its cart screen, and how other companies have handled it became a point of contention in the thread over this lawsuit as well. Both Nintendo’s and Sony’s own terms of service have long contained language to the effect that “the software is licensed, not transferred” — but having that buried in the terms of service is a separate matter from being required to display it clearly on the purchase screen. AB 2426 mandates the latter, and the thread saw a back-and-forth between people arguing “isn’t Nintendo the same?” and others countering that “the issue is whether a warning is shown, not what’s buried in the terms.” Not conflating the mere existence of terms-of-service language with the purchase-time warning requirement is key to understanding this lawsuit.

  • Shohei Ohtani Goes Hitless Over Worst 60-At-Bat Stretch Since Joining Dodgers, Strikes Out 4 Straight as Team Drops Second Straight Game

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani batted leadoff as DH against the Cardinals on September 2 (local time) and went 0-for-4 with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks/hit-by-pitches. The team also blew a lead and lost 8-6 in extra innings, dropping its second straight game. Ohtani is now homerless over more than 60 plate appearances — his worst stretch since joining the Dodgers. On the 5ch Geisoku+ (entertainment/sports news) board, worried posts like “they should sit him” and “maybe the two-way workload is catching up with him” appeared alongside harsher takes like “he’s the one to blame” and “all he does is strike out, I’m losing interest in watching,” with many comments also comparing his slump to that of other Japanese players like Munetaka Murakami.

[MLB] Cardinals 8-6 Dodgers (Sept. 3 Japan time, Los Angeles)

Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani started at home against the Cardinals on the 2nd (the 3rd in Japan time), batting leadoff as DH.

He went 0-for-4 with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks/HBPs. The team lost in extra innings, its second straight defeat.

    Re: #143
Ohtani's been focused on pitching this year and built up his upper body for it
He's pouring so much energy and stamina into pitching that his hitting's completely fallen apart, and on top of that he keeps pitching without fully recovering, which is causing injuries
Forget two-way — right now he can't even do one thing well
The Dodgers have plenty of pitching depth, so I think a lot of people just want him to nail his job as DH since the pitching's fine
But Ohtani doesn't seem satisfied with that. Since he's a star, nobody around him can push back hard, so everyone's tiptoeing around him like he's made of glass
    146AnonymousSep 3, 2026 14:47

I still watch, but now I catch myself praying his at-bat doesn't come up in scoring chances
Since he's gonna strike out for sure, I just don't want to see it

    Background and Talking Points

This season Ohtani has kept playing as a hitter while also working toward a return to the mound, and neither he nor the team has clearly explained how the two-way workload might be affecting his focus and stamina. The word “戦犯” that keeps coming up in the thread — roughly “the guy to blame” — is a common exaggeration on 5ch and shouldn’t necessarily be read as literal criticism. At the same time, other Japanese players’ slumps, Munetaka Murakami’s among them, are being brought up too, suggesting posters see this less as an attack on one player and more as general late-season fatigue. It’s also worth noting that no specific cause for the slump (elbow, wrist, or a broken swing) has been officially confirmed by the team, so everything in the thread remains speculation.
