  • UN Resolution Calls for Ditching the Mercator Map — Japan Votes Yes, US Votes No; 5ch Reacts: ‘Wait, Isn’t the Earth Flat?’

The UN adopted a resolution encouraging countries to move away from the Mercator projection, long the standard for world maps, with Japan voting in favor and the United States voting against, according to the Asahi Shimbun. While the Mercator projection is valued for accurately preserving direction, it’s also known for distorting size, making countries and regions at higher latitudes look far larger than they actually are. On 5ch, the resolution sparked lively debate over how maps look, how big countries really are, and how easy the proposed alternative projections are to read.

I'm a fan of the azimuthal equidistant projection too.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Mercator projection preserves angles and directions accurately, but its drawback is that it exaggerates area at higher latitudes — Greenland, for instance, appears nearly 14 times larger than its true size — which has long made countries near the equator look smaller than they really are. Because this projection has served as the standard in school textbooks and mapping apps for so long, some have argued that this “warped visual impression” has shaped how people perceive the relative size of nations. In the thread, opinions split between those who prioritize accurate area and those who favor Mercator for its clarity on direction, while alternatives like the Equal Earth and Mollweide projections drew mixed reactions, with some calling their shapes unnatural and hard to read. It’s worth noting, since it’s easily misunderstood, that the UN resolution doesn’t mandate how any country must use maps — it merely encourages adoption in settings like education.

  • Juice=Juice’s “Unbelievable Year”: TV Exposure Surges, But Fans Scream Over the Ticket Wars

Hello! Project’s Juice=Juice has been racking up so much exposure — thanks to a surge in TV and festival appearances — that it’s being called “the most fun year of my Hello! Project fan life.” On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, comments celebrating the excitement sit alongside a flood of complaints from fans who can’t get into shows because ticket odds have gotten brutal. In the thread, opinions welcoming the rising exposure as a sign of the group’s growth clash with critics who say the buzz has outpaced their actual skill, and commenters are divided over whether their singing ability truly matches their level of exposure.

For a 1-2 hour show, their screen time is pretty short.
And waiting around the whole time just for that segment is a bad use of time.
If that's the case, I'd rather just watch YouTube, where they're on screen the whole time.
Though I guess that's part of why young people are drifting away from TV these days.

    That's exactly it.
As a BEYOOOOONDS fan myself I'm not quite there yet, but I bet Morning Musume and Angerme fans are pretty furious.
Ignoring the group hierarchy in the first place is just not okay.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello! Project has long carried an unspoken culture of “a hierarchy topped by Morning Musume,” which creates fertile ground for pushback whenever a group like Juice=Juice suddenly grabs a concentrated share of TV slots and attention — even as fans celebrate the group’s rising exposure. “CANDY TUNE,” mentioned in the thread, is another Hello! Project unit that has likewise seen its exposure rapidly increase, and the “forced-push” criticism — over whether skill is keeping pace with growing exposure — is a debate that recurs across all of Hello! Project. The back-and-forth over comparative singing ability is part of that same context, closer to an annual in-house squabble than a one-off attack. What readers may easily misread is that the frustration over not getting tickets isn’t about “unpopularity” — quite the opposite: it stems from attendance surging faster than the agency’s venue-size planning could keep up, a point some commenters in the thread make themselves.

  • Luffy Gets Crushed Flat by a Hammer, Charges the Final Boss Mid-Grimace

On 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (“Anything Goes Live”) board, a single panel from the latest chapter of “One Piece” became a hot topic. A giant swings a hammer down, Luffy jumps in the way, and as he’s getting crushed flat — pulling an absurd face the whole time — he just keeps charging straight at the final boss. Confusion set in first, since the panel alone barely conveys what’s actually happening. From there the discussion snowballed into a debate over the artwork itself: some compared the rough, panel-skipping style to “Higanjima,” others got nostalgic for the careful, single-illustration artwork of early One Piece, and still others praised the new style for its brisk pacing.

It's because he doesn't have an editor like Demon Slayer's

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Since 2023, when Eiichiro Oda introduced Luffy’s new form “Nika” in “One Piece,” the artwork for battle scenes has leaned heavily into Tom-and-Jerry-style exaggerated, panel-skipping “toon force” expression. “Higanjima,” which the thread brought up for comparison, is a separate manga known for boldly cutting explanatory panels in favor of raw visual impact — pairing the two is actually a go-to comparison that shows up regularly in 5ch manga threads. The dispute splits over whether to read this shift in art style as “the inevitable evolution of expression that comes with going Nika” or as “a decline where the art gets rougher for the sake of pacing.” Many posts line up early-volume artwork against the newest chapter not out of simple nostalgia, but because the debate itself is really about how a character’s role and art style shift over the course of a decades-long serialization — context that’s easy to miss from the replies alone.

  • Liella!’s “Sports Day” Event Fails to Sell Out a Single Show, Sparking Fan Worries Over Turnout

A thread has popped up on 5ch’s Love Live! board over “Sports Day,” a fan event being held by “Liella!,” the new group from the Love Live! School Idol Project franchise. The event centers on competitions like a cosplay relay race, a “Love-ka” memory-matching card game, and tug-of-war, and complaints arose over the lack of any live performance segment. What’s more, with the event just a day away, not a single show had sold out — to the point where day-of tickets are even being made available. The thread saw a string of posts estimating attendance based on Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium’s seating capacity, and combined with forecasts of heavy rain on the day of the event, concern over turnout spread.

Only people who are into the actual voice actresses (as opposed to the 2D characters) would bother going to a garbage event like this.
    41AnonymousSep 4, 2026 20:18
For starters, the "upgrade" seats this time are only about 900 per team.
    900 × 3 = 2,700
The rest comes down to how many regular fixed seats they can fill, but I doubt this event breaks 5,000 people per show.

Wouldn't be shocked if they lose out in attendance to the "Ikizu Live" 2-day show at Musashino Forest (a snarky nickname some fans use for a rival Love Live! sub-unit's live shows).

Threw together a rough attendance estimate.
    [Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium capacity]
    Arena: 4,000; 2nd/3rd floor stands: 5,000; max total 9,000.
    [Sports Day attendance forecast]
    Arena: 10 rows × 30 seats × 3 teams = 1,000
Going by what I'm seeing on X, the stands look 60-80% full, so 3,000-4,000
    Combined, I'd guess 4,000-5,000?
I also went to the Shinymas (Shiny Colors) sports festival, and I think this one's turnout is about the same ballpark.

Seriously, who out there is even asking for a Sports Day?
If you're school idols, just do a stage show.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Sports Day appears to be a fan-meeting-style event planned separately from any live concert, centered on participatory competitions like cosplay and games meant to let fans interact with the cast. The venue is split between limited-capacity “upgrade” (アプグレ) seats and general fixed seating, and posts estimating turnout based on that seating breakdown stood out in the thread. It’s not unusual in itself for tickets to a non-concert event to fail to sell out right away, but some pointed out that a song released the same day had been outpaced by other groups on the charts, and this was taken by some as a reflection of Liella!’s current standing in popularity. On the other hand, since Sports Day was conceived as a fan-interaction event rather than a concert, some in the thread cautioned that it would be hasty to immediately equate empty seats with declining popularity.

  • US Lifts Ban on Importing Fresh American Potatoes, Sparking Fears Over Pest Risk

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is moving ahead with plans to lift the import ban on fresh American potatoes, and comments on the topic by food journalist Rikiya Yamaji on TBS’s “THE TIME,” sparked a wave of reactions on 5channel’s News Speed+ board. The move to lift the ban began after a request from the US side in 2020, and this past August, 21 pests and diseases requiring quarantine consultation were identified. Among them is the “pale cyst nematode,” which has already caused damage within Hokkaido, and briefing sessions for producers began on September 1st. Opinions on the thread split over what’s really driving the move to lift the ban, and over how to weigh the fact that similar pest damage has already occurred in Hokkaido-grown potatoes.

Food journalist Rikiya Yamaji appeared via taped segment on TBS’s morning news program “THE TIME,” (weekdays, 5:20 AM) on the 4th, commenting on the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ push to lift the import ban on fresh American potatoes.

Consideration of lifting the ban began in 2020 following a request from the US side, prompting MAFF to begin procedures. This past August, the ministry identified 21 pests and diseases requiring quarantine-measure talks with the US, and began briefing sessions in producing regions on September 1st. https://i.imgur.com/RuKGJMv.jpeg

At the briefing sessions, officials reported on progress such as the identification of the 21 pests and diseases requiring quarantine talks with the US, and farmers voiced worries about the risk of pest infestation once the import ban is lifted. Among the 21 is the “pale cyst nematode,” which has already broken out and caused damage within Hokkaido. There remains strong concern that if imported potatoes reach the market and get planted as seed potatoes, it could trigger the further spread of pests and diseases.

Since they're fresh, soil can stick to them and drop off anywhere, letting the pest breed.

They either don't grow potatoes there anymore or only grow resistant varieties.
Nagasaki's had similar damage too and has developed resistant varieties of its own.
There's also speculation that a new strain might not be containable by the existing resistant varieties.
On top of that, in that area even tractors and shoes are banned from moving out unless fully disinfected first — rough even for a mini-truck.

Potatoes are apparently a staple food in Europe and Peru, so once you get used to it, it's probably fine.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The pale cyst nematode parasitizes plant roots; the bodies of dead females harden into “cysts” that protect their eggs for long periods, making the pest difficult to eliminate with ordinary pesticides or soil treatments. In Japan, outbreaks have already been confirmed in parts of Hokkaido, and strict containment measures — including restrictions on moving between farmland and disinfecting equipment — have long been in place to prevent further spread. The thread’s disagreement centered on how to weigh this existing domestic outbreak: some argued it’s inconsistent to single out American potatoes as the problem, while others argued that importing from the US, where controls are laxer, only adds to the risk. Some speculated the push to lift the ban is tied to tariff negotiations or security-related dynamics, but this remains speculation, not a fact confirmed by reporting. Japan’s domestic self-sufficiency rate for potatoes is said to be nearly 100%, and many questioned what price benefit importing would even bring.

  • Foreigner: “Sony just lowered the bar for Nintendo Direct with the worst State of Play ever” → 300k likes

Sony’s game-news program “State of Play” got torn apart on an overseas forum, and the post ripping into it racked up 300,000 likes, turning it into a hot topic. Viewers repeatedly called out two things: the opening, which aired live-action movie footage with no warning and led some to mistake it for actual gameplay, and the sheer length of the developer and voice-actor interviews. Over on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“console war”) board, discussion turned to whether Nintendo’s upcoming “Nintendo Direct” — airing around the same time — would fall into the same trap, with opinions split especially over how it might handle movie-related info tied to Zelda’s 40th anniversary.

Thought there'd be something new, but it was just a recap

Background and key points of this discussion

“State of Play” is Sony’s irregularly scheduled broadcast for announcing PlayStation news, while “Nintendo Direct” is Nintendo’s equivalent program. What drew criticism this time was a segment structured to make viewers think they were watching gameplay footage, only for it to be revealed a while later as live-action movie footage (reportedly tied to Resident Evil) — a move many viewers saw as “dishonest.” Meanwhile, within the thread, some pointed out that Nintendo also inserts lengthy developer interview segments, so this isn’t simply a case of one show being categorically better than the other; the real point of contention was a difference in presentational honesty — namely, whether it’s made clear upfront that the footage is from a movie. The split opinions over featuring voice actors front and center also reflect differing viewer preferences on how these shows should be put together.

  • TV Tokyo Announcer Rio Kitagawa: “I Bought Power Stones to Escape My Miserable Life”

TV Tokyo announcer Rio Kitagawa looked back on her life — including her time in Morning Musume — in a YouTube video, saying she’s “been through one miserable thing after another,” and revealed that she bought power stones purely out of a desire to escape her bad luck. The remarks were picked up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, sparking a split reaction. Some sympathized, saying things like “that’s rough” and “there’s an imbalance between her own effort and what she’s gotten out of it,” while others were harsher, saying “blaming everyone around her is exactly why she keeps getting resented” and “same old blame-everyone-else mindset,” turning it into a debate over her way of talking about herself.

That's probably right around when she got the job offer — it was 2 years ago.

    Background and Points of Debate

Rio Kitagawa, a former Morning Musume member turned TV Tokyo announcer, has long been a frequent topic on 5ch’s entertainment and Hello! Project boards. This latest discussion was sparked by a YouTube video in which she looked back on her life as “one string of bad luck after another” and said she bought power stones purely out of a desire to break free from it. Opinions in the thread split between those who sympathized with what they saw as an honest confession, and those who took a harsher view, seeing it as “blaming her surroundings for trouble she brought on herself” — with the latter view slightly more dominant. Buying lucky charms like power stones isn’t unusual for celebrities, but framing it as an “escape from bad luck” seems to have sharpened the divide in how people judge her character. Note that comments drawing comparisons to real-world incidents, along with baseless personal attacks or remarks about her appearance, have been excluded from this article.

  • 160 of 500 Bowls Cause Food Poisoning: Backlash Erupts Over YouTuber Komeo’s ‘Death Crab Ramen’ Stall

YouTuber Komeo served 500 bowls of “Death Crab Ramen” from a food stall, and 160 cases of food poisoning were reported, sparking a thread on 5ch. In addition to salmonella, the bacteria detected reportedly included Plesiomonas, typically associated with freshwater organisms, and photos circulated showing cardboard boxes stored inside the kitchen. The thread split between commenters slamming the sloppy hygiene management and those defending the stunt itself.

    Re: #82
Boxes that held frozen goods get wet and breed bacteria there, and bacteria breed in the holes of the cardboard itself anyway.
So when stuff arrives boxed, most places immediately move it into the freezer and fold up and toss the box.
There are probably plenty of shops that keep them around just because they've got nowhere else to put them, though.
But that's a violation as far as the health department's concerned — if they inspect, they'll flag it.

    Re: #109
On paper, the basic format is just "this kind of shop will sell this kind of item, here are the details."
In this case there was apparently some rule about heat treatment, but I think he got around it by saying the heating is done in-store and then it's chilled before being sold.

Honestly it all comes down to paperwork in the end, so that part's pretty easy to clear.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Operating a food business in Japan requires a permit under the Food Sanitation Act and the appointment of a food hygiene supervisor, but meeting the paperwork requirements doesn’t guarantee that on-site hygiene practices actually measure up. In this case, critics pointed to the unheated, chilled preparation method and cardboard boxes left inside the kitchen, suggesting that holding a business permit is a separate issue from the actual hygiene standard in practice. On the thread, arguments defending the stunt with the view that “society has become intolerant of taking risks” ran alongside criticism that the scale of harm shouldn’t be downplayed — worth noting is that the discussion proceeded without clearly separating whether the stunt itself was appropriate from the separate issue of poor hygiene management.

  • Fans Voice Concern Over Growing Gap Within Hello! Project — 5ch: “I Thought Only Morning Musume Would Ever Get a Shot”

Hello! Project is a massive idol collective made up of more than ten groups, including Morning Musume。, Juice=Juice, Angerme, and Tsubaki Factory. In recent years Juice=Juice has pulled ahead of the pack through music-show appearances and viral buzz on social media, while other groups’ exposure has reportedly stagnated. Discussion kicked off on 5ch’s Hello! Project board with a post claiming the “gap between groups is getting brutal.” Voices blaming the agency’s management clashed with counterarguments that it simply comes down to hit songs and differences in ability, with commenters citing members like Moe Kamikoryo — who hasn’t landed a spot on a major music show despite ten years in the group — as evidence of the disparity.

I want them to keep building up Juice=Juice's brand power so that, like Morning Musume。in its prime, booking Juice=Juice on a show lets them wedge Rosy Chronicle in as a tie-in act (a common TV booking practice).

    Re: #73
Rosy Chronicle is basically Juice=Juice's dedicated in-house opening act.
With more big venues coming up, they'll get plenty of chances to open.
    81AnonymousSep 5, 2026 08:18
I don't know much about the industry, but I bet the people making music shows are glad to have an idol group with real chops like Juice=Juice.
Feels like that kind of goodwill is what leads to the next booking.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello! Project is home to more than a dozen groups, and in recent years Juice=Juice has been raising its profile through music-show appearances and viral buzz on social media. Meanwhile, groups like Morning Musume。, Angerme, and Tsubaki Factory reportedly haven’t achieved the same level of exposure, and the thread saw frustration and defense swirl around that gap. The debate splits largely into two camps: one questioning whether the agency is deliberately favoring Juice=Juice, and the other arguing the difference simply comes down to results — hit songs, view counts, and the like. Those in the latter camp point to how a clip from a late-night CDTV New Year’s Eve live went viral as evidence. One thing readers might easily get wrong is that booking on shows like CDTV isn’t decided by the agency alone — the show’s own casting choices play a role too, which is why some in the thread pushed back with “shouldn’t they just make a hit song first?” It’s also worth noting the case of Moe Kamikoryo, who spent ten years in the group without landing a spot on a major music show — a fact often cited as background for this whole gap debate.

※This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Urgent] Hey, isn’t the gap within Hello! Project getting worse and worse?.”

  • FSA Tightens Oversight of 40- and 50-Year Mortgages — 5ch: “Even If You Sign at 20, You’re Still Paying at 70”

Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) has decided to step up its oversight of how banks screen borrowers for ultra-long mortgages with 40- or 50-year repayment terms. With Bank of Japan rate hikes and rising long-term interest rates threatening to inflate borrowers’ total repayment amounts, the FSA wants to check whether banks are lending beyond what borrowers can actually afford, and plans to begin examining practices at major banks, regional banks, and online banks as early as this fall. On 5ch, opinions were split: some worried about how old borrowers will be by the time they finish paying (“even if you sign at 20, you’re still paying at 70”), while plenty of others defended the ultra-long-loan approach, saying “take out a loan with low payments while you’re young, then pay it down early once your income goes up.”

It was learned on the 4th that Japan’s Financial Services Agency has decided to strengthen oversight of how banks screen applicants for ultra-long mortgages with 40- or 50-year repayment terms. The agency plans to begin examining practices at major banks, regional banks, and online banks as early as this fall.

The concern is that as the Bank of Japan raises rates and long-term interest rates climb, the resulting increase in interest burdens could inflate borrowers’ total repayment amounts — meaning banks may be lending more than some borrowers can actually handle.

Regulators will examine how banks explain risks to borrowers, including the risk of rising interest rates as well as concerns like falling income or declining asset values.

From what I get, the idea is you take out one of these ultra-long loans to keep payments low while your salary's still low and you're young, then once you're older and earning more, you make extra payments to shorten the actual payoff period.

It's basically no different from just handing over free tax money. Give it another 13 years and the consumption tax rate will probably hit 50% too.

They clearly understand rate hikes will mean more defaults. They're probably just writing it off as an unavoidable sacrifice.

    Re: #13
Defaulting over a rate hike this small? Even now, rates are nowhere near as high as they used to be historically. Zero interest for all these years was the abnormal part — this is just things going back to normal. If people are going to default on their mortgage over rates this low, they should just do what people used to: chug a Yunker (a Japanese energy tonic drink) and work around the clock. This isn't even close to 'sacrifice'-level rates.

A friend of mine stretched himself thin to buy property and said he won't finish paying it off until he's 75. I mean, that's assuming he can't make extra payments early — he's a taxi driver out in the countryside, so honestly I'm a bit worried for him.

Honestly, I think taking out as big a loan as you can while you're young to build up assets gives you better odds of ending up rich.

Yeah, your assets really don't grow unless you invest. A salaryman's lifetime earnings aren't all that impressive. You've got to take some chances somewhere if you want to get rich.

Think of it as the cost of being able to leave whenever you want — that's cheap. Ideally you rent for as long as you can and buy a small place once you're older. Way too many people are stuck on this new-build mindset of trying to make one house double as both a family home and a forever home.

If it's a condo in one of Tokyo's 23 wards, you can just sell it once the kids are grown and it'll free up more than enough cash to buy some cramped little house.

Escape from what, exactly? In a few years rent's going to climb so high you won't be able to afford that either — is that your idea of a family falling apart? People who can't manage money well won't be buying any house in their old age. What are you gonna do when building materials get even more expensive?

    Re: #199
Meanwhile, the building you bought keeps aging, and repair costs keep piling up on top of everything.

    Background and Key Points

Ultra-long mortgages with 40- or 50-year terms have become more common in recent years amid the rise of dual-income households and soaring housing prices. The typical approach is to keep monthly payments low while young, then make extra payments once income rises, effectively bringing forward the real payoff age. What the FSA is actually concerned about isn’t “paying for 50 years” in itself, but lax screening — whether, as interest rates rise, total repayment amounts balloon beyond initial expectations, with banks ending up lending more than borrowers can really afford. The thread split between those arguing young people should borrow to build assets, and more cautious voices warning that payoff ages could stretch into the 70s or 80s and that rising rates will mean more defaults. It’s also easy to miss that some pointed to a deeper structural issue behind all this: housing prices themselves have simply kept climbing, meaning the debate extends beyond loan terms into the supply-side price increases driving them in the first place.
