  • Tokaido Shinkansen Suspended as Nagoya Gets Slammed by 70mm-an-Hour Rain — 5ch: ‘Looks Like AI-Generated Footage’

On the afternoon of September 8, heavy rain disrupted the Tokaido Shinkansen, suspending inbound (up) service between Shin-Osaka and Nagoya, and outbound (down) service between Mishima and Shin-Osaka. According to FNN, torrential rain of 70mm per hour was recorded between Nagoya and Gifu-Hashima. In the Nagoya area, roads flooded near Chikusa Station and the Imaike intersection, and conventional lines such as Meitetsu and Kintetsu suspended operations across the board too, prompting a flurry of posts saying that even detours had become impossible. On 5ch, discussion centered on why the suspended sections differed between the up and down directions, and why the Shinkansen — despite its strict rainfall thresholds — wasn’t even running at reduced speed, with some expressing shock at flood footage, saying it “looks like AI.”

According to JR Central (JR Tokai), the Tokaido Shinkansen is currently suspending service between Shin-Osaka and Nagoya (inbound/up) and between Mishima and Shin-Osaka (outbound/down) due to the ongoing heavy rain.

    Re: #63
The Shinkansen's rainfall rules are strict. They could at least crawl along at like 30km/h to reach a station — including the through-tracks, they can generally hold two trains there, and passengers could get off via a boarding ladder between cars if it came to that. It's baffling why they won't even run it at 30km/h. Conventional lines are one thing, but this is the Shinkansen we're talking about.

There's literally a frame built in for a flood barrier panel — why didn't they just put the panel in?

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Tokaido Shinkansen operates under its own weather-based restrictions: when rainfall or wind speed exceeds set thresholds, decisions to slow down or suspend service are made section by section. This time, the fact that the suspended sections differed between the up (Shin-Osaka–Nagoya) and down (Mishima–Shin-Osaka) directions reflects both where the rain was concentrated and differences in operational turnback points — meaning the thread’s guess that it was ‘probably related to rolling stock scheduling’ was roughly on target. In the Nagoya area, what appears to have been a linear rainband dumped intense rain in a short span, flooding roads around Chikusa Station and the Imaike intersection; Meitetsu and Kintetsu also halted service, leaving alternative transport nonfunctional as well. Some also asked why the trains couldn’t at least run at reduced speed — but the Shinkansen operates under far stricter rainfall thresholds than conventional lines, so the standard practice is to stop trains entirely in sections that exceed the threshold rather than merely slow them down. That nuance is easy to miss from the news report alone and is a common point of confusion.

  • Record Rainfall Slams Nagoya: Rivers Overflow, Underground Parking Shut Down as Phone Alerts Won’t Stop Blaring

On the evening of September 8, 2026, smartphones across Nagoya City wouldn’t stop blaring heavy rain and evacuation alerts. Water levels rose on multiple rivers, including the Shonai and Ueda rivers, forcing the closure of part of the Tsurumai subway line and the underground parking lot at Ozone on National Route 19 as a flood-prevention measure. A live-discussion thread on 5channel filled up with photos and videos of rivers and roads, along with a steady stream of reports from people struggling to get home or evacuate. The situation sparked wide discussion, with some pointing out that rainfall had exceeded expectations and others drawing comparisons to the catastrophic 2000 Tokai flood.

Depends on where you are, really

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Much of Japan’s flood-control infrastructure was built to handle around 50mm of rainfall per hour, so a localized downpour reaching 70-100mm, as seen here, easily exceeds that capacity. The thread gathered concrete details on the flooding of the Shonai and Ueda rivers and the closures of underground parking lots and subway lines, but opinions split between those who blamed “deteriorating flood-control technology” and those who argued the rainfall simply hit a record high. Comparisons to the 2000 Tokai flood also came up, but whether the actual rainfall this time exceeded that event remains hearsay within the posts — confirmation from an official source like the Japan Meteorological Agency isn’t available from the thread itself.

Comments made by Keisuke Honda, who provided on-site commentary for the North/Central America World Cup during the September 1 broadcast of ‘news zero,’ became a hot topic on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board. Japan’s national team went undefeated through the group stage (1 win, 2 draws) but was eliminated in the Round of 32 after losing 1-2 to Brazil in the first knockout round. Responding to fans who suggested the next goal should be ‘reaching the quarterfinals,’ Honda dismissed the idea, saying, ‘That’s setting the bar too low.’ He also questioned calls for him to obtain a coaching license, asking, ‘Since when did being a coach become such a heavy burden?’ Thread reactions were split between critics who said he should get certified before speaking out, and defenders who argued his track record speaks for itself.

Keisuke Honda Responds to Calls to Lower the World Cup Goal from ‘Champions’ to ‘Quarterfinals’: ‘That’s Too Low a Bar’ — On Coaching Licenses: ‘Since When Did Being a Soccer Coach Become Such a Heavy Responsibility?’

Keisuke Honda appeared on news zero, which aired Tuesday, September 1. He provided commentary on Japan’s matches at this year’s North/Central America World Cup in soccer, watching on-site as the younger players competed in the tournament he himself once played in.

Japan advanced from the group stage with a historic first-ever unbeaten record (1 win, 2 draws), but lost 1-2 to Brazil in the first knockout round, exiting at the Round of 32. Having watched it all in person, Honda shared his candid impressions.

The coaching license system isn’t a JFA-specific rule so much as a framework of coaching qualifications set by the AFC and FIFA, positioned as the minimum requirement for taking charge of a national team or a J1 club (as mentioned in comment #8). Honda has a history of managing Cambodia’s national team without holding the required license, and has long publicly argued that ‘if you have a track record, you don’t need a license.’ In this news zero appearance, he pushed back on both the post-World Cup argument that ‘the goal should be lowered to the quarterfinals’ and the calls for him to obtain a coaching license. What split the thread was how to weigh the gap between how loudly someone speaks and what they’ve actually accomplished. Those calling for him to get certified argued that, since he’d be responsible for a pro club or a national team, a license serves as a baseline guarantee of competence. Those defending him argued that the opinion of someone with a proven track record is worth hearing regardless of whether he holds a license. One point readers might easily miss: the license requirement isn’t just a promotional formality—it’s a system grounded in international standards.

  • Insomniac 5ch Users Shoot the Breeze All Night — 5ch Asks: ‘What Even Is an “Inkya” (Introverted Loser)?’

In the early hours of September 9, 2026, a thread titled “Talk to a sleepless, bottom-tier inkya” popped up on 5channel’s Newsspeed VIP board. The original poster vowed to reply to nearly every single post, and the conversation rambled on with no particular direction — coffee, udon noodles, what lies beyond the Milky Way, and stories of losing weight from being sick — continuing almost until dawn. Along the way, posters swapped stories like hallucinating in the hospital after a sleep-medication adjustment, and even debated what “inkya” actually means, turning a simple insomnia gripe session into a sprawling, freewheeling thread.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“All-reply” style VIP threads pop up frequently around the time the date changes, and their defining trait is that they aren’t necessarily tied to any specific newsworthy event — they’re simply self-contained chit-chat among whoever happens to be in the thread. This one was no exception, with folk wisdom of dubious scientific backing flying around, like “drinking coffee makes it even harder to sleep” or “a light snack causes a blood sugar spike that makes you drowsy” — none of which is guaranteed to actually work. As for the definition of “inkya,” the “active inkya / passive inkya” split proposed in post 169 is strictly one poster’s personal opinion, not an established definition shared across 5ch or the VIP board as a whole. The thread also touched on one poster’s experience adjusting sleep medication during a hospital stay, but specifics about medication and dosage vary enormously by individual and shouldn’t be generalized into medical advice.

  • Onsen Lifts Tattoo Ban, Reverses Course After Just One Month — 5ch: ‘Just Ban the Ones Who Actually Misbehave’

A hot spring facility that had lifted its tattoo ban — charging tattooed customers an extra 100 yen to bathe — reportedly reversed the policy just one month after starting it, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Newssoku VIP board. Trouble reportedly included damaged facilities and customers smoking without permission, and the thread split sharply between those who argued “just ban the individual customers who caused trouble” and those sympathetic to the facility, arguing “there’s no way 100 yen covers the cost of hiring someone to monitor them.” Opinions also diverged over whether the 100-yen surcharge was set at a reasonable level, and whether it’s fair to lump yakuza in with people who just have fashion tattoos.

Okay, let's say hypothetically 3,000 tattooed customers came in a month lol
    100 yen × 3,000 people = 300,000 yen
Let's put the monitor's salary at around 200,000 yen?

So the facility probably doesn't want to take on the risk of trouble just to net 100,000 yen a month lol

    Background and points of debate

Japan’s widespread “no tattoos” rule at public bathhouses is generally traced back to the 2000s, when anti-organized-crime ordinances spread and treating tattoos as a marker of gang affiliation became standard practice. In recent years, partly driven by a rise in foreign tourists, some facilities have started easing the rule — allowing cover-up stickers or restricting tattooed guests to private baths — and this hot spring appears to have been one of those testing a wider opening, in this case via a surcharge. The thread split between the view that facilities should simply eject individual troublemakers, and the view that, given limited staff, handling things case-by-case isn’t cost-effective — with the adequacy of the 100-yen surcharge itself also up for debate. It’s worth noting, though, that how many tattooed customers actually visited and what exactly happened remains secondhand information circulating within the thread; no official explanation from the facility has been presented.

  • Shohei Ohtani Goes 64 Plate Appearances Without a Homer — 5ch: ‘He’s Basically Turned Into Hideki Matsui’

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has gone cold at the plate — now 64 plate appearances without a home run — and the drought became a hot topic on the Nanademo Jikkyo board (5ch’s sports discussion forum). Posters noted his OPS has slipped to .902 and could soon dip below .900, drawing comparisons to Munetaka Murakami (OPS .812) and Kazuma Okamoto (OPS .746), who are having similarly rough stretches. Others pushed back by pointing to his contributions on the basepaths, like stolen bases, while the long-running debate over whether regular-season or postseason stats matter more resurfaced — eventually widening into comparisons with Hideki Matsui.

    Re: #53
He means that normally if you hit 30 bombs, your OPS should be way higher than that.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) reflects a batter’s overall offensive production, and a prolonged home-run drought tends to drag the whole number down through a falling slugging percentage. The two players brought up for comparison in the thread, Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto, have also seen their OPS stagnate relative to their home run totals, so this isn’t unique to Ohtani. The thread also repeatedly referenced the 2024 case in which Ohtani’s then-personal interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was fired by the team over his involvement in illegal gambling — but it was Mizuhara alone who faced criminal charges, and Ohtani himself was never charged with any crime. The point that split the thread was how much weight to give regular-season numbers versus past postseason performance — a recurring argument that comes up whenever a player’s form is being judged, not just in Ohtani’s case.

  • What Really Makes a Final Fantasy Game ‘Final Fantasy’? 5ch Can’t Agree

A thread titled “So what actually makes something feel like Final Fantasy?” went up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, sparking debate over what really ties the series together. Some pointed to realistic graphics and tall character proportions, Hironobu Sakaguchi’s scenarios paired with Nobuo Uematsu’s music, and the series’ tradition of overhauling its systems with every entry — while opinions split over how to place divisive titles like FF8, FF9, and FF13 within that identity. The discussion widened further with comparisons to the Tales series, mentions of Kingdom Hearts’ distinctive world-building, and eventually criticism of the franchise’s “host-club-style” character designs.

    Re: #136
That's literally what they've always done

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Final Fantasy series has been running for nearly 40 years since the original debuted in 1987, and both Hironobu Sakaguchi (the series’ creator) and Nobuo Uematsu (its early composer) have since left Square Enix. The thread’s disagreement broke down into two main points: first, a divide between those who prioritize “realistic graphics and proportions” and those who prioritize “the challenge of overhauling the system with every entry,” and second, differing views on whether to treat divisive entries like FF8 and FF9 as part of the series’ mainstream identity. Worth noting, though not mentioned in the original thread, is that the claim that FF Tactics and FF12 share the same world isn’t mere speculation — it’s an officially confirmed setting known as the “Ivalice Alliance.” Also easy to misread: the comparisons to the Tales series are being used to gauge FF’s position within the broader JRPG genre, not to declare one series definitively better than the other.

  • Samurai Japan Player’s Intimate Photos With Beer Vendor Girl — Bunshun Teases Scoop

Shukan Bunshun teased a scoop article titled “Samurai Japan Player’s Intimate Photos With Beer Vendor Girl,” set to go live on September 9, 2026 at 12:00 PM, sparking a wave of reactions on 5ch’s “Geinou/Sports Breaking News+” board. The player’s real name has not been revealed yet, and the thread was full of speculation tossing around names like Genda and Kiyota. The debate centered on a divide between those defending the pair — arguing there’s no problem if both are single — and those who said it’s a different story if infidelity or underage drinking is involved, with plenty of cold reactions pointing out just how “minor” Bunshun’s scoop actually is.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “Bunshun Cannon” often follows a pattern: the day before publication, it teases the target and content in vague terms on social media, then reveals the name when the full issue drops the next day. This time too, the player’s name remains withheld — the names Genda and Kiyota that circulated in the thread were nothing more than speculation, not confirmed information. Opinion split between those defending the pair with “it’s fine if both are single” and those offering conditional acceptance with “unless it involves infidelity or underage drinking, that’s a different story” — and reactions ran noticeably hotter or cooler depending on whether the player in question was married or single. Some replies also referenced an actual 2023 news report (with a link to a Yahoo News article) about former Lotte player Ikuhiro Kiyota being reported as dating a beer vendor girl — worth noting that this is a separate incident from the current teaser. The beer vendor girl seen in the photo is a private individual whose name has not been disclosed, and within the thread, “just leave them alone” was a notably common sentiment regarding whether the story should even be published.

  • Comedian Cunning Takeyama Warns Ungirls’ Tanaka: ‘Comedy Is Done the Moment It Touches Politics’

Comedian Cunning Takeyama has aired his personal theory that comedians who speak out on politics are “second- or third-rate,” adding that it’s “something done by people whose work has dried up” — remarks reported as a piece of advice aimed at Ungirls’ Takkyu Tanaka. On the 5channel Geisupo Sokuho+ (entertainment/sports news) board, the thread drew a wide range of reactions: some debated the topic by naming comedians who’d previously drawn attention for political remarks, others pointed out that Takeyama himself has made political comments in the past, and plenty of the discussion just drifted off into idle chat.

Cunning Takeyama (55) appeared on the TV Asahi program “Cream Nantara” (Mondays, 11:45 p.m.), aired on the 7th. He performed a bit from 20 years ago, revealing his commitment to the “kire-gei” (angry-outburst comedy style) he was known for back then.

The segment’s concept was “Time Slip 20 Years Back!? Encountering Nostalgic Shows & Scandal-Prone Idols.” Tetsuhei Arita announced, “A time machine has been developed.” Stepping into the time machine built by an assistant director, the cast found a “recreation” of TV Asahi’s headquarters from 20 years earlier. The bit recreated the recording sets of old shows like “Warai no Kin Medal” (Comedy Gold Medal) and “Ikinari! Ougon Densetsu” (Sudden Golden Legend), running quizzes tied to each recreated scene.

In the recreated scene from “Warai no Kin Medal,” Takeyama busted out his old-school kire-gei routine.

    Background and Talking Points

Whether comedians should speak out on politics is a topic that keeps resurfacing in Japan’s entertainment world, with figures like La Salle Ishii and Suidobashi Hakase — comedians who leaned harder into political commentary as their TV work dried up — often cited as examples. At the same time, some in the thread noted that Western comedians have a tradition of skewering politics for laughs, suggesting Takeyama’s remarks may reflect a broader gap between Japanese and Western views of what comedians are for. That said, the source article cited here is actually about a TV Asahi segment recreating a bit from 20 years ago, and the article text doesn’t confirm which program or context produced the thread-title remark warning Ungirls’ Tanaka. It’s also worth noting that the thread’s discussion drifted more toward pointing out boomerangs from Takeyama’s own past remarks and general chit-chat than toward the actual merits of the debate.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5channel (Geisupo Sokuho+) thread “Cunning Takeyama: ‘Comedy Is Done the Moment It Touches Politics’ — ‘Second- or Third-Raters Do That. People Whose Work Dried Up Do That.’ Warning to Ungirls’ Tanaka.”

  • Hiroyuki Questions the ‘Don’t Roll It Out Until It’s Perfect’ Argument on Self-Driving Cars — 5ch: ‘It Would Save More Lives’

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura raised a question on X (formerly Twitter) about the argument that “self-driving cars shouldn’t be introduced until they’re perfect.” He explained that autonomous vehicles could act like an unpaid chauffeur working 24 hours a day — helping elderly people get around in rural areas without public transportation, or getting people home from wherever they are. On 5ch, his comment sparked a flurry of responses raising concerns about who would be responsible in the event of an accident, worries that self-driving cars could cause traffic jams, and criticism that legislation hasn’t caught up — while others pushed back, arguing that “self-driving would actually save more lives,” leaving opinion divided.

Hiroyuki Questions People Who Insist “Don’t Introduce Self-Driving Until It’s Perfect”: “What’s the Logic There?”

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura (49) updated his official X (formerly Twitter) account by the 8th, laying out his views on the debate over self-driving cars.

Hiroyuki opened with: “Self-driving isn’t just at the level of ‘convenient because you don’t have to drive yourself.’ It’s like having a chauffeur working for free, 24 hours a day. You can drive to an izakaya and drive home. In rural areas without public transit, elderly people can go wherever they want, whenever they want, to see whoever they want. For domestic trips, you don’t even have to think about train transfers — you just tell it where you’re going and you arrive.”

I live in snow country, so I want them to build a feature where the computer safely drives forward through blizzards for me.
But on icy, dead-slippery roads, I'd rather drive myself.
Japan has a lot of snow country, so winter self-driving is probably still a long way off.

Even now, self-driving in heavy downpours gets you messages like 'automatic braking disabled' — full self-driving is way too far off.
    10AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:44
Self-driving can handle up to Level 3.
    Level 4 is impossible.
AI can't predict human behavior — pedestrians sometimes do completely unpredictable things.

China's self-driving taxis are impressive — they even dodge scooters coming at them the wrong way (lol).

Well, humans can't predict that stuff either 😂

    >completely unpredictable things
Apparently it's become a trend to deliberately walk up to Cybercabs to make them stop, just for fun.
(They actually do stop pretty reliably — which is exactly why they end up causing traffic jams too.)
    12AnonymousSep 9, 2026 00:45
I've never actually seen anyone say 'don't introduce self-driving until it's perfect.'
Sure, there might be a few people out there saying that,
but they have zero influence, so just ignore them.

I mean, isn't that basically what the government is saying too? (lol)

Overall, accidents will probably decrease with self-driving. Insurance premiums should drop too. I really want it introduced soon.

    Re: #17
    No way.
Traffic is a flow — it's not like everything's safe just because one car drives safely.
If you followed the law to the letter, the whole country would be gridlocked.

    So what?
Are they saying the death rate is already lower with self-driving than with human drivers?
    I don't think it is~

If they just legislate that whoever gets hit by a self-driving car is 100% at fault, the problem goes away.
They'll probably land on that conclusion eventually.

That's how it is in China.
Guess that means China's got it right and Japan's just being stupid.
    53AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:01
Who takes responsibility when there's an accident?
    Legislation hasn't caught up yet.
    54AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:02
    Re: #53
Just make it the car owner's responsibility, simple as that.
    55AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:03
I think self-driving is actually harder in cities.
Since manufacturers have to comply with traffic laws, and it can't improvise like a human, you'll get gridlock everywhere.
I couldn't stand being driven around by something that never goes a hair over the speed limit, or stops dead every single time at a yellow light at a busy intersection.
    70AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:07
    Re: #55
Just program it with the traffic laws and let it drive.
Elsewhere in the world, the speed limit is treated as an actual limit you don't exceed — Japan's the only place that encourages 'going with the flow' of traffic instead.
    74AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:09
As long as Hiroyuki personally pays for the damages, sure, why not? (lol)

    Re: #70
What?????? Of course you program in the traffic laws.
Have you never driven before? Even when the road ahead is totally empty, if a patrol car or a driving-school car goes by, a long line forms behind it, right?
That's what happens if you follow traffic law to the honest letter.
    85AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:15
    Re: #79
    Exactly this (lol)

Self-driving cars could end up causing traffic jams.

The speed at which cars and other vehicles move is essentially the speed of the economy —
in PC terms, it's like the core's processing speed.

And Japan is working hard to slow that down (lol)
It's an idiotic government slowing down the PC's processing speed while calling it 'efficiency.'
    80AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:13
What's with the people criticizing self-driving when there's already a driver shortage? Are you gonna be the driver?
    91AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:17
    Re: #54
Don't you think it's unreasonable to pay millions for a car, have it go haywire and cause an accident on its own, and then get stuck with the responsibility?
It's self-driving — you personally did nothing wrong at all, right?
    128AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:28
    Re: #91
Maybe at first it doesn't need to be fully driverless — just put one responsible person on board.
Like those taxis in 'Damerica' (a jab combining 'dame,' meaning 'no good,' with 'America').
    94AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:18
People who drive recklessly enough to kill someone won't use self-driving anyway.
Self-driving will just mean more people getting killed.

On that point, there was footage from the U.S. of a self-driving car smoothly handling a narrow road with people darting out, no problem.

People driving 80 in a 60 zone and crashing cause more traffic jams than that.
Plenty of people also crash from dozing off at the wheel.

    Re: #104

    Re: #138
    No, there isn't.
    144AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:34
    Re: #138
There's data on human-driven accidents, at least.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

In Japan, amendments to the Road Traffic Act made Level 3 (conditional automated driving) legally possible on expressways and similar roads in 2020, and Level 4 driverless operation under specific conditions possible in 2023. However, practical deployment remains limited to a small number of designated areas, such as Eiheiji Town in Fukui Prefecture, and has yet to see full rollout on ordinary public roads. The thread was most divided over two points: the legal question of who bears responsibility in the event of an accident, and whether there’s actual data backing up the claim that self-driving would save more lives. In the U.S., driverless taxis are operating in several states and releasing data, but large-scale statistics establishing a clear safety advantage over human drivers have not yet been firmly established. While Hiroyuki’s post emphasized the convenience self-driving offers for getting around, most of the replies focused on practical issues like traffic congestion and the state of legislation, resulting in something of a mismatch in the discussion.
