What Really Makes a Final Fantasy Game ‘Final Fantasy’? 5ch Can’t Agree

The story

A thread titled “So what actually makes something feel like Final Fantasy?” went up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, sparking debate over what really ties the series together. Some pointed to realistic graphics and tall character proportions, Hironobu Sakaguchi’s scenarios paired with Nobuo Uematsu’s music, and the series’ tradition of overhauling its systems with every entry — while opinions split over how to place divisive titles like FF8, FF9, and FF13 within that identity. The discussion widened further with comparisons to the Tales series, mentions of Kingdom Hearts’ distinctive world-building, and eventually criticism of the franchise’s “host-club-style” character designs.

What even is it?
6AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:24
More like the realistic art style — or rather, characters with realistic body proportions.

Re: #6
Couldn't get into the designs in Theatrhythm
Pixel art would've been just fine
30AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:33
Isn't it true that FF games have no connection to each other except for characters like Gilgamesh who can cross dimensions?
32AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:35
Re: #30
I'm pretty sure FF Tactics and FF12 are technically set in the same world
The era treated as an ultra-advanced ancient magical civilization in Tactics is the era FF12 takes place in
31AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:33
Sakaguchi's scenarios, world-building, and atmosphere, plus Uematsu's music
And introducing a brand-new system every single time
37AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:39
Re: #31
In the end that tradition stopped after 11, didn't it…
43AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:43
Re: #31
[Good news] Lost Odyssey basically was FF
35AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:36
Playing FF4 right now and I cracked up because literally everyone's still alive
50AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:47
Re: #35
In the original almost everyone dies
There's even Yang's kitchen knife left behind as a keepsake
38AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:40
Square Enix, just let 'Beard' (fan nickname for series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi) handle an FF one more time
39AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:41
Everyone seems to hate it, but I really love FF8's world-building —
but I guess to people who've played a lot of the series, that game has zero 'FF-ness'?
122AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:41
Re: #39
In a way, it's the most 'FF' game there is, since it shattered the expectations of longtime fans and JRPG conventions alike
42AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:43
I actually like 13
Especially the music — I still listen to the soundtrack on repeat to this day
44AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:44
Re: #42
The regular trash-mob battles were so garbage I dropped it halfway through
49AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:47
Re: #42
Sunleth Waterscape was great though
60AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:54
Handsome guys and beautiful women travel together and end up saving the world, right?
79AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:01
Re: #60
I thought that was a description of Ainori (a Japanese reality dating show where a group travels together in search of love)
65AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:56
So then, what actually makes something feel like a Tales game?
71AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:58
Re: #65
The type of RPG where you travel with your buddies and somehow end up saving the world before you know it
72AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:58
Re: #71
Whoa, hold on, you're really gonna say that?
75AnonymousSep 8, 2026 22:59
Re: #71
Huh. I don't really think that's it, though
85AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:04
Tales hasn't lost its fanbase, so it'll probably overtake FF as the No. 1 JRPG before long

Though before that happens, some brand-new series that blows up could end up becoming the face of the Reiwa era — but there's no sign of any new JRPG IP showing up at all
86AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:05
Re: #85
Not gonna happen, the fanbase numbers just aren't there…
92AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:08
Feels like Tales can only keep rehashing isekai-reincarnation-style character designs and stories from here on — they've used up everything else

They'd need something like a middle-aged, English-speaking lesbian protagonist to actually shake things up
94AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:09
Re: #92
Running out of fresh ideas happens to every series
That's exactly why Tales, which just keeps giving fans what they love, comes out on top
97AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:10
Kingdom Hearts is also to thank for everything turning into a parade of pretty-boy 'host club' types
99AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:12
Re: #97
Honestly, I feel bad for kids overseas
They start out thrilled like 'Wait, I get to go on an adventure with Donald and Goofy!?'
and then suddenly it's all talk of 'light' and 'darkness,' until finally a bunch of mysterious spiky-haired guys in black hoods start floating around in midair
they must've been legitimately terrified
103AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:16
Ever since 7, except for 9, all that shows up is host-club guys and hostess-club girls
105AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:18
Re: #103
If anything, 12 got criticized precisely because it *wasn't* full of host/hostess types
107AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:21
Re: #103
Isn't 9 basically just a puppet show of a guy wooing a girl like a host would?
111AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:27
Re: #103
9 isn't even FF
It's a shoujo manga
123AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:44
Can FF seriously only make host-club-looking characters anymore?
Couldn't they do something good based on General Leo from FF6?
129AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:52
Re: #123
That's why I keep saying: remake 2 in high-res.
FF2's serious world-building,
a handsome lead like Firion,
and a story built around the beautiful Maria

That's exactly the perfect source material for today's graphics-obsessed FF
128AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:51
Is there anything the series actually has in common besides Amano's artwork?
133AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:54
Re: #128
Fantasy plus advanced science
Low-stress system UI
Deep post-game content
Sound effects and music
and so on
131AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:53
Lean into nostalgia and it's 'too old-fashioned,' make it feel fresh and it's 'this isn't it'
So what exactly do you people want!?
Square Enix is at a loss too, lol
Honestly, you're the reason it keeps losing its way in the first place
134AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:54
Re: #131
Seeing FF16's graphics confirmed it for me

Make an FF2 remake
136AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:57
Even though it's a numbered mainline entry, I think they should develop it like a brand-new IP that just borrows a shared vocabulary — spell names, crystals, summons, that sort of thing
138AnonymousSep 8, 2026 23:58
Re: #136
That's literally what they've always done

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Final Fantasy series has been running for nearly 40 years since the original debuted in 1987, and both Hironobu Sakaguchi (the series’ creator) and Nobuo Uematsu (its early composer) have since left Square Enix. The thread’s disagreement broke down into two main points: first, a divide between those who prioritize “realistic graphics and proportions” and those who prioritize “the challenge of overhauling the system with every entry,” and second, differing views on whether to treat divisive entries like FF8 and FF9 as part of the series’ mainstream identity. Worth noting, though not mentioned in the original thread, is that the claim that FF Tactics and FF12 share the same world isn’t mere speculation — it’s an officially confirmed setting known as the “Ivalice Alliance.” Also easy to misread: the comparisons to the Tales series are being used to gauge FF’s position within the broader JRPG genre, not to declare one series definitively better than the other.
