The story
In the early hours of September 9, 2026, a thread titled “Talk to a sleepless, bottom-tier inkya” popped up on 5channel’s Newsspeed VIP board. The original poster vowed to reply to nearly every single post, and the conversation rambled on with no particular direction — coffee, udon noodles, what lies beyond the Milky Way, and stories of losing weight from being sick — continuing almost until dawn. Along the way, posters swapped stories like hallucinating in the hospital after a sleep-medication adjustment, and even debated what “inkya” actually means, turning a simple insomnia gripe session into a sprawling, freewheeling thread.
What people said
Same here
Took sleeping pills and still can't sleep
If you've got nothing tomorrow, let's just pull an all-nighter
Well, I do have to swing by my part-time job to pick up my paycheck (バ先 = short for "arubaito saki," part-time job)
Eh, I'm planning to go in the morning so it's fine
Already drank mine earlier
Sounds like you have no intention of sleeping
Re: #19
It's a family thing! Lately my habit is getting my little brother to make me coffee
By the way, even if I drink a Monster Energy, I still sleep when it's time to sleep
I wonder what's outside the Milky Way
There's another galaxy out there
Actually, aren't galaxies grouped into clusters or something, all rotating together?
But lately there's also this multiverse theory that says there are infinite universes, and if we could observe other universes overlapping within our own, it would strengthen the case for the multiverse theory
I'm about to do that right now
Hey, who was it that said let's pull an all-nighter
Just sleep after you get back
I'm just picking up my paycheck and grabbing the new Starbucks drink, so it's fine
I actually have work tomorrow, normal work… being an adult sucks
Ah… yeah, you should probably sleep for that one
What are you eating? Post a pic
You can tell just by looking
That's the cheap one!
Udon! Never seen that packaging before
Slept too much during the day so I can't sleep now
It's gonna be pouring rain here again tomorrow too
It's both and neither
I also napped during the day so I can't sleep
Heavy rain area, huh… stay safe if you head out
Close, I think it was around 98 yen at some supermarket
I was wondering where that was — is it a Kansai supermarket?
Run to the convenience store!!!!
Late-night wandering is the best
No flood damage here at least
Thanks
Re: #49
At the Sandii supermarket chain in Kansai it's about 78 yen
It's a lifesaver
Glad to hear it
My grandma's house flooded in the last heavy rain and it was rough, so everyone please be careful
Jealous of people who are skinny
That much!?
My BMI is 16 right now
Getting sick and catching colds over and over will do it
Lost 8kg over 4 years
Yeah, if you're awake for 2 days straight, of course you're gonna hallucinate
I posted what meds I was taking and people here told me I should get them changed, so my pill count went way down!
But now there's no booze…
Personally I think there's 'active inkya' and 'passive inkya'
The former can hold a conversation but it's somehow always a little off, or they start sentences with an awkward 'uh,'
The latter is the type who genuinely can't talk to other people at all
Just my personal take though
Huh, I see
I'd say I'm the former
Even in text conversations I end up typing things like 'uh,' 'huh,' 'wait'
Background and Key Points of This Topic
“All-reply” style VIP threads pop up frequently around the time the date changes, and their defining trait is that they aren’t necessarily tied to any specific newsworthy event — they’re simply self-contained chit-chat among whoever happens to be in the thread. This one was no exception, with folk wisdom of dubious scientific backing flying around, like “drinking coffee makes it even harder to sleep” or “a light snack causes a blood sugar spike that makes you drowsy” — none of which is guaranteed to actually work. As for the definition of “inkya,” the “active inkya / passive inkya” split proposed in post 169 is strictly one poster’s personal opinion, not an established definition shared across 5ch or the VIP board as a whole. The thread also touched on one poster’s experience adjusting sleep medication during a hospital stay, but specifics about medication and dosage vary enormously by individual and shouldn’t be generalized into medical advice.
