  • Director Kojima’s New Game PHYSINT Forced Back to the Drawing Board After Losing Access to the Decima Engine and More

It’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s game-hardware board (Geha) that director Hideo Kojima’s new title ‘PHYSINT’ has lost access to the Decima Engine and Sony Pictures’ motion-capture facilities it had been using, forcing development to start over from scratch. Both were development infrastructure provided by Sony for the ‘Death Stranding’ series, so losing them effectively means a full project reset. On the thread, opinions clashed over pessimistic takes like “it won’t be finished for at least five years,” comparisons to past contract terminations with Konami and Google (Stadia), and speculation about a possible move to the Xbox camp.

There's no way this even gets finished in five years, is there?

There's no way this finishes while Asha (a poster nickname for a Sony exec) is still in charge. Classic pattern: Asha's successor cuts the contract, grumbles "we wasted money because of Asha" after quitting, and gets slammed for it.

    Re: Re: #84
While saying they "respect Kojima's vision" and will "keep collaborating closely going forward," they're the ones taking his dev tools away? That's Sony for you — all they're thinking about is sabotaging Kojima and Microsoft.
    89AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:10
Cut loose by Konami, then cut loose by Sony. If Microsoft cuts him loose too after this, don't you think you'd have to admit there's something wrong with Kojima's approach? If a backer is going to fund you long-term, you either need to deliver an explosive hit or hand over exclusive sales rights that help move hardware — and if you can't do that, you finish quickly and keep the funding costs down. If he had those basics down, I don't think he'd keep getting cut loose.

    Re: Re: #89
Death Stranding is genuinely a well-made, good game, and it's popular and sold decently and got good reviews, but business-wise it seems to have barely broken even. Death Stranding 2 might even be running at a loss. Making a good game doesn't automatically mean everything's fine.
    96AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:20
    Re: Re: #89
Sigh… Is everyone forgetting he also got cut loose by Google? Does that not count because it was just Stadia shutting down? But if this time it's the same story — cut loose because they gave up on PS6 — then it all lines up, doesn't it? And Microsoft picking him up afterward matches the pattern too!

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

As an independent studio, Kojima Productions has moved between major platform holders for funding and technical partnerships — from Konami, to Sony, to (as speculated) Microsoft. The Decima Engine is technology from Sony’s Guerrilla Games, and the motion-capture facilities were also provided by Sony Pictures, so losing access to both isn’t just an equipment swap — it’s closer to losing the very foundation of the development pipeline. The thread split between those who see this as “a fatal blow to development” and those who see it as “temporary turbulence from a platform switch,” with the latter camp pointing to a possible link with Xbox’s next-generation console concept, “Helix.” That said, details and timing for Helix itself remain unconfirmed, so this stays firmly in speculation territory even within the thread. It’s also worth noting that the original Death Stranding itself took several years to complete as a major project, so a flat “five years from now” figure isn’t confirmed information either.

    Background and Talking Points

“Miracle shot” threads are a familiar format on idol fan boards — a single photo shared on social media is enough to spark a wave of enthusiasm. The member at the center of this one, Ebata Kisaki, is active within the Hello! Project (H!P) family of groups. Comments like “she should join Morning Musume.” or “why not join Sakura Gakuin” are just exaggerated fan-speak used to express how highly she’s rated — not literal suggestions that she’s actually transferring or being scouted. That said, some replies in the thread veered into more sensitive territory involving her body and appearance; this article has been edited to leave out posts that amount to harassment or sexualized commentary about her. Shorthand nicknames like “Ebamifu” (a fan mashup of Eba and Mifuu’s names) are insider terms specific to the Hello! Project board and can be hard to parse for newcomers — worth keeping in mind while reading.

  • Foreign Workers’ Average Monthly Pay Hits ¥292,400, Up 6.4% Year-on-Year: Labor Ministry Survey

According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s 2025 Survey on the Employment Conditions of Foreigners, released on August 31, the average monthly salary (base pay plus overtime) for foreign nationals working full-time came to ¥292,400 — up ¥17,500, or 6.4%, from the previous year. The survey covered 9,016 workplaces employing foreign workers, conducted in October–November 2025, with 3,919 workplaces responding. While the results reflect improving conditions amid Japan’s labor shortage, threads on 5channel lit up with comments like “Japanese workers at the bottom only make ¥200,000” and “why not just hire Japanese people?”, sparking debate over comparisons with low-wage domestic labor and the industries that have come to rely on foreign workers.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s 2025 Survey on the Employment Conditions of Foreigners, released August 31, found that foreign nationals working as regular full-time employees earned an average monthly salary of about ¥290,000. That’s up 6.4% from the previous year, with treatment of foreign workers improving amid the ongoing labor shortage.

The survey was conducted in October–November 2025, targeting a random sample of 9,016 workplaces with five or more employees enrolled in employment insurance that employ foreign workers. 3,919 workplaces responded.

Monthly pay, including base salary and overtime, averaged ¥292,400, up ¥17,500 from the previous year. Working hours averaged 158.7 hours, with 17.6 hours of overtime.

You should treat 'labor shortage for business expansion' and 'labor shortage for business survival' as separate problems.
Convenience stores and restaurants, which fall into the former, just want cheap labor,

Manufacturing and medical/welfare come with night-shift overtime,
    services have late-night shift rotations,

Interviewer: 'In that case, we'll just hire a foreign worker instead. Goodbye.'

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s worth noting that this figure isn’t an average across all industries — the survey is limited to “workplaces that employ foreign workers.” The sample skews toward industries already facing severe labor shortages, such as manufacturing, services, wholesale/retail, and medical/welfare, and conditions involving night shifts and overtime may be pushing the monthly figure upward. Comments in the thread ranged from surprise that this is “higher than what Japanese workers at the bottom make” to claims that it’s “actually a reasonable level for rural areas or certain job types,” with many pointing out that a single national average doesn’t match their lived experience. Notably, the discussion centered less on improving conditions for foreign workers themselves and more on comparisons with domestic low-wage workers and the treatment of Japan’s Employment Ice Age Generation.

The poster says they graduated from a lower-tier regional national university, are under 30, and have no work history. According to the poster, what’s keeping them stuck is being unable to accept that they can’t get into a top-tier company, and they revealed that the root of their pride lies in having been sent to national-affiliated elementary and junior high schools by their parents. Reactions split, with some saying “that’s not pride, you just have no motivation” and others asking “isn’t it fine not to be top-tier?”, while a string of harsher takes — factoring in the poster’s age and education — argued “you should already give up on a top-tier company.”

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In Japan’s official statistics, “NEET” is defined by the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare as non-working people aged 15 to 34 who are not in school and not doing housework — a definition the poster themselves referenced in the thread. The split in opinion centered on how to take the poster’s self-diagnosis that “pride is what’s stopping me from moving forward”: some read it as plain laziness, while others felt it should be treated as the flip side of an inferiority complex about educational background. The poster’s claim that the root of their pride lies in “being sent to national-affiliated elementary and junior high schools by my parents” is likely to strike outside readers as an unexpected detail. It’s also worth noting that the poster withheld their exact age to avoid being identified, which led to some back-and-forth in the replies where the age question never quite got resolved.

  • Merging after a stop sign: right or left turn signal? 5ch: “There’s no point signaling to the main road”

A thread on 5ch went viral over an image posing a simple question: at a merge point with a stop sign, should you signal right or left? Legally, this spot counts as an intersection, so the textbook answer is a left signal — but plenty of drivers insist on the right signal because it’s easier for cars on the main road and oncoming traffic to see. Opinions poured in from people drawing on real-world driving experience. The debate never quite converged, partly because people couldn’t agree on a more basic question: who is the turn signal actually for?

    1AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:35
    So which is it?
    2AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:36

    8AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:37
You signal right to warn drivers on the main road.
The left signal is meant to notify the car behind you, but since there's no option here except turning left, it's not necessary.
    21AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:45
    Right works fine.
Signaling left is pointless since the people on the main road can't see it anyway.
What's even the point of a signal then?

If there's an acceleration/auxiliary lane like in Re: #77, use the right signal.
    87AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:08
People keep saying stuff like "there's no point signaling if the car going straight on the priority road can't see it," but seriously…
can you please stop driving like you expect someone to bail you out just because you flicked a signal???
    93AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:11

Do those people seriously think that if they signal and just barge in, everyone will magically get out of the way?
    94AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:11
    Re: #87
That completely defeats the entire purpose of signaling.
    99AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:13
    Re: #87
"Stop driving expecting others to sort it out" is a fair point, but on public roads I think you're better off driving as if unpredictable stuff can always happen.
In this exact situation, which way you signal (or whether you signal at all) probably won't change much — it's more about that general mindset.
    89AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:09
How would you feel if the car in front of you signaled right?
    91AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:10

It's not about "I'm going to cut in dangerously" — it's that even if you're in control, other people out there aren't necessarily being careful at all.
It's like driving at a speed where you could handle a kid suddenly darting out in a residential area.
Sure, worrying about a worst case on a road shaped like this is extreme, but what if some car slips past your visual and mirror checks and comes flying in at crazy speed?
    108AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:17
Left is technically correct, but in practice signaling right makes it easier for everyone around you to read the situation.

    119AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:23
    Re: #116
Exactly, that's why you signal right.
At this angle, drivers on the main road can't see a left signal anyway.
    125AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:26
Wouldn't a left signal be invisible to the car behind you too?
    126AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:27
    Re: #125
No, the car behind can see it just fine.

Background and key points of this debate

When a merge point has a stop sign, Japanese traffic law treats that spot as an “intersection,” meaning it’s handled the same as an ordinary left turn rather than a lane change onto a main road. That’s why driving schools teach the left signal as the default rule. In real-world driving, though, plenty of drivers use the right signal instead, since it’s easier for oncoming and following traffic to notice — and this gap between “legal principle” and “on-the-road habit” became the central fault line of the thread. The discussion was muddied further by a disagreement over an even more basic premise: who is a turn signal actually meant for? Those who see it as a message to the car behind them reached different conclusions than those who see it as a message to cars on the main road — an easy-to-miss detail buried in the arguing. Worth noting too: the “correct” answer can shift depending on whether an auxiliary lane exists and the exact shape of the intersection, so this isn’t really something that can be settled with one blanket “right or left” rule.

  • Isn’t PC, Xbox, and Switch 2 Enough?” — Opinions Split on Console Choices

A thread titled “Isn’t it fine to just have PC, Xbox, and Switch 2?” on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked a debate over console choices. Replies raised price concerns like “Xbox costs 100,000 yen, who’s buying one at this point?”, along with comments on GTA6 such as “it’s basically a PS5 title” and “PS5 gets censored so I’ll play it on Series X.” Opinions also split over whether choosing Xbox counts as a “compromise,” with those prioritizing value for money going back and forth against those prioritizing exclusive titles.

Once you own both PS5 and Series X, you barely end up turning the PS5 on anymore

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Threads like this are a staple of 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, repeatedly popping up to compare the market share and pricing of PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. Xbox sells in much smaller numbers in Japan than other platforms, and the “100,000 yen” figure mentioned in the replies appears to refer to the street price of the Xbox Series X hardware, though it is not an official up-to-date price. The comments about GTA6 being “basically a PS5 title” and “getting censored on PS5” are likewise just posters’ speculation and personal impressions — this thread alone doesn’t confirm whether multiplatform support or content differences between versions have been officially announced ahead of release. The debate split over whether choosing Xbox counts as a “compromise,” with those who prioritize price differences and those who prioritize exclusive software lineups reading the situation differently.

  • Level-5’s Hino Explains AI Use at Reveal Event — 5ch: “How Are You Gonna Prove That?”

Level-5 president Akihiro Hino, after facing accusations that footage shown at a company presentation was made using generative AI, explained the situation on his X (formerly Twitter) account, posting “That’s a relief 😮‍💨”.

On 5ch, opinions split over the company’s claim that it “used generative AI trained only on in-house material containing no third-party copyrighted works” — specifically, whether that’s even technically possible with current AI technology. There was also plenty of skepticism about the finished quality of the presentation footage itself, and about the newly revealed plan to shrink development time for major titles from five years down to two.

    That’s a relief 😮‍💨

Honestly, what they're doing is no different from Palworld.
It's the kind of move a company that makes original content shouldn't pull.
Using AI as a tool to streamline workflow is probably fine, but the moment you use AI somewhere users can actually see it, like a promo video, of course you're going to get slammed for it.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Level-5 holds flagship IPs like Yo-kai Watch and Professor Layton, yet its development resources are reportedly stretched thin, with as many as 12 titles said to be in simultaneous development — and AI tool use has repeatedly come up in discussions of its plan to shorten development timelines. It was against this backdrop that generative AI use came under suspicion over the quality of this presentation’s footage, prompting Hino himself to explain the situation on X.

The thread split over one specific question: is it technically possible to run generative AI trained solely on in-house material containing no third-party copyrighted works? Neither the “it’s possible” camp nor the skeptics offered concrete evidence, and the debate went nowhere. Worth noting, since the article alone doesn’t make it clear: while rights-cleared generative AI services like Adobe Firefly and Suno do exist, the game industry as a whole still hasn’t settled on a “clean” framework for AI use. Another point that’s easy to conflate — the backlash against AI use in programming is nothing like the backlash against AI use in public-facing material such as promo videos.

  • Kochi Sends Passing Notices to 221 Teacher Candidates — More Than Double the Open Slots — 5ch Asks: “Why Apply If You’re Just Going to Turn It Down?”

On September 11, the Kochi Prefectural Board of Education announced the results of its public school teacher hiring exam for 2027 appointments. Elementary school teaching posts have seen a string of resignations among successful candidates in recent years — seven in ten declined the year before last, and six in ten declined last year — so this time the board notified 221 people that they had passed, more than double the number of positions actually available. The prefecture has also moved up the timing of its supplementary exam by a month compared with last year. On the 5ch thread, comments poured in from all angles — from puzzlement over why people decline offers after passing, to debates over temp hiring, the now-scrapped teaching license renewal system, and the realities of teacher pay and retirement benefits.

Elementary Teachers Keep Declining Even After Passing: Kochi Notifies 221 Candidates — More Than Double the Planned Hires — as 70% Declined the Year Before Last and 60% Last Year

    Yomiuri Shimbun

The Kochi Prefectural Board of Education announced on the 11th the results of its selection process for the public school teacher hiring exam for 2027 appointments. Of the 1,128 people who sat the exam, a total of 382 passed across elementary, junior high, high school, and other prefectural schools. For elementary schools, where successful candidates have frequently turned down offers in recent years, the board notified 221 people that they had passed — more than double the planned number of hires. A supplementary hiring exam, anticipating further declines, will also be held on November 15, a month earlier than last year.

Homeroom teachers aren't announced until the first day of the new term anyway.
With the labor shortage these days, it's completely normal for a first-year homeroom teacher to just be someone covering for a teacher on maternity leave.
And it's hit or miss — sometimes you get a genuinely great veteran — so you really can't say either way.
For the kids it's a homeroom-teacher lottery ("tannin gacha"), and for the teacher it's just as risky — a kid lottery and a parent lottery right back.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The number of people who “pass” a teacher hiring exam doesn’t necessarily match the number who actually get hired. With elementary schools facing a growing shortage of people willing to become teachers, 70% of successful candidates declined before starting the year before last, and 60% declined last year. This time, Kochi Prefecture is trying to fill the gap by notifying 221 candidates that they passed — more than double the number of positions actually planned. Behind this lies the fact that even though the teaching license renewal system was abolished in 2022, the burden of long working hours and club-activity supervision hasn’t changed, and cases of teachers leaving within just a few years of being hired permanently remain common. The thread showed a split between those criticizing the system design that produced this situation and those framing it as a rational choice by teachers who deliberately stay non-permanent. It’s also easy to overlook that a rise in the number of passing candidates doesn’t necessarily mean the teacher shortage is actually being resolved.

    5AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:25
Wait, is next quarter's earnings report gonna be an all-time record profit or something?

LOL, Dark Outlaw Games got shut down the year after it was founded (DOG = Dark Outlaw Games)

Why scale down when earnings are supposedly strong…?
    Doesn't make sense to me
    27AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:32
It'd still be one thing if what's left after all the cutting wasn't stuff like Marathon and 'Space Baldy' (mocking nickname for Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, whose protagonist is bald)
    37AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:34
    Re: #27
There's also stuff like 'Blackout Dawn 2' and 'Baldy Bride' (derisive nicknames fans use for other unreleased PlayStation projects), but between all the cost-cutting they genuinely have nothing left in the chamber
    31AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:33
    Thanks to those decisions
    severance payouts and all

It's precisely because they lost big on Marathon and Concord that they're cutting Kojima's project (Kojima Productions' game) and going into austerity mode

Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Santa Monica Studio

None of these three have put out a single brand-new game since their PS4-era cross-gen titles — zero all-new PS5 games between them

    That's rough

Meanwhile Kojima's studio has been putting out a game every three years since going independent

Just looking at the results, yeah, of course they'd get cut

How third parties are positioning themselves
    FF7's relaunch, name-dropping Nintendo
FromSoftware going Nintendo-exclusive (what's even the point?)

Persona and Kojima's game heading to the Xbox brand

It's not just a feeling — this kind of exclusive-dealing maneuvering keeps increasing

    Re: #77
    Yeah, Insomniac is scary too
The first reveal of Wolverine was 5 years ago, and according to leaks development has run around 7 years
Leaks say the game's systems got reworked multiple times, including at least one major overhaul

If it flops after taking this long, that seems like exactly the kind of thing that'd set Sony off
    78AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:49
When are these guys ever gonna put out a brand-new game?
    It's nothing but ports

The studio that made The Last of Us is behind 'Space Baldy' — how did this ever get greenlit
    87AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:52
    Re: #79
They got forced to make something they didn't even want to make, like that Last of Us Online thing, which then got scrapped — and on top of that we get 'Space Baldy'

If this doesn't sell, Sony's own execs should be the ones held responsible first
    81AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:50
What was that Marvel fighting-spirit game's studio again?
Feels like they'll end up on the next round of studio closures too

What new IP has even come out on 'Trash-Station 5'? (a derisive nickname for the PS5)
I can only think of maybe four: Returnal, Saros, Concord, and Destruction AllStars, which already got its servers shut down

    There's also Stellar Blade

It was a hit, but the developer got furious over Sony's 'slave contract' and the deal ended, lol

Wolverine itself will probably sell reasonably well
Metascore has nothing to do with sales anyway

Crimson Desert has a similar Metascore and sold 6 million
Meanwhile Saros scored an 88 and bombed hard
In the end it's just about how many people actually want the game — the score has nothing to do with it

Also, Crimson Desert responded to negative Steam reviews immediately, pushing out a patch within like 3 days, and has kept updating ever since

SIE is shifting toward actively backing Chinese and Korean games

Background and key points of this discussion

Since shutting down its Japan Studio in 2021, SIE has repeatedly restructured its portfolio of studios, including acquired ones, and the recent string of closures and canceled projects discussed here is an extension of that pattern. Opinion in the thread split over how earnings can look strong even as the business appears to be shrinking at the same time — some argued the cost-cutting is what’s boosting profit margins, while others saw it as simply reining in investment in new IP development. One reply also pointed to overall group headcount figures, which had actually trended upward rather than down, a detail that shows studio closures don’t necessarily line up one-to-one with the group’s total staffing moves. Worth keeping in mind while reading: it would be premature to conclude, based on the sheer number of closures alone, that the organization’s overall headcount or investment is shrinking.

I always figured rock was all about the melody, with lyrics you could barely make out, so it was a shock hearing him enunciate every single word so clearly.

Some self-proclaimed music connoisseurs lose their minds if you say Japanese lyrics matter lol
But of course Japanese people care about the Japanese language — that's just natural, isn't it lol

Background and key points of this discussion

Yutaka Ozaki was one of the defining rock singers of the 1980s, known for songs like “Graduation,” “15 no Yoru” (“Night of the Fifteen-Year-Old”), and “I LOVE YOU” that captured the rebellious feelings of Japanese youth. The launch of his official YouTube and TikTok accounts is being framed as a video-archive rollout timed to his 60th birth anniversary, with music videos and live footage set to be released over time. Thread reactions ranged from surprise that he would have turned 60 had he lived, to speculation over whether he could have kept performing his old rebellious material into his sixties, to remarks that lyrics like “riding off on a stolen bike” would read as far more extreme by today’s standards. At the same time, the circumstances of his sudden death and his personal relationships have long been the subject of speculation online, much of which remains unconfirmed — readers should be cautious about treating rumors circulating on the internet as established fact.
