  • Flame of Recca: The Manga Nobody Talks About Anymore — 5ch: “It’s Even Had 3 Pachinko Machines”

Flame of Recca is a manga by Nobuyuki Anzai that ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday and wrapped up after 33 volumes. It became a minor talking point that it landed on the same 33-volume count as fellow Sunday series Ushio and Tora and Zatch Bell!!, which finished around the same time — but this 5ch thread actually kicked off with someone pointing out that, oddly, the series never comes up in online discussion at all. Posters went back and forth on the quality of the artwork, whether accusations that it ripped off RAVE and Liar Game hold any water, and the odd gap between a series popular enough to spawn pachinko machines and its surprisingly low profile online.

    1AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:35
    Why is that, though?
    3AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:37
Put that way it sounds like Sunday and Magazine are constantly ripping stuff off, but was there ever a "Magazine version of Demon Slayer" or a "Sunday version of Dragon Ball"?

    9AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:39
It's not really as much of a rip-off as people make out — about on the level of Liar Game and Kaiji, nowhere near enough to call it plagiarism. RAVE, on the other hand, is blatantly ripping off One Piece.

Everyone on their side was useless in the final battle… they were all just stalling for time until Recca showed up.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Flame of Recca is a series by Nobuyuki Anzai that ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday starting in 1995 and concluded in 2002 at 33 volumes, with an anime adaptation also airing that same year. Whether sharing that same 33-volume count with fellow Sunday series Ushio and Tora and Zatch Bell!!, which wrapped up around the same time, was coincidence or intentional was never settled in the thread — no clear answer emerged.

Opinion split mainly on two points. First, against claims that the series resembled RAVE or Liar Game, some pushed back that it stayed within familiar genre conventions rather than crossing into outright plagiarism. Second, on the artwork itself, opinion divided between those who felt the art was good enough to make the series worth reading and those who thought the drawing was poor apart from the anime-style faces.

One point readers can easily misread is the thread title’s premise that the series “never gets talked about” at all. In reality, its continued run of three pachinko machine tie-ins shows it has kept a certain fanbase and commercial presence going — this is less a case of a forgotten work and more that it simply doesn’t come up often in specific online circles like social media and aggregator sites.

※This article was compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G) thread “[Sad News] For some reason, nobody ever talks about this manga called Flame of Recca lolololololol.”

  • Mbappé fires back at defense critics: “It’s absurd that goal-scorers get treated as villains”

Real Madrid’s Mbappé has hit back at critics who say he doesn’t pull his weight defensively, pushing back in an interview with France Football magazine. Reports of his remarks — to the effect that “there’s no way a player who’s scoring goals should be the problem” — split opinion on 5ch’s celebrity/sports board (Geinou Supo Sokuhou+). Some posters defended him, arguing that a player delivering results in front of goal should naturally be excused from defensive duties, while others countered that the argument rings hollow given the team hasn’t been winning titles — with some even pulling up Takefusa Kubo’s defensive stats for comparison.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé is pushing back against claims that he lacks defensive awareness.

Mbappé is a signing brought in by the club president, not someone Mourinho actually wanted.
When it comes to Mbappé, the president's wishes take priority over Mourinho's.
It's the same thing that happened at Manchester United, when Mourinho said he didn't want [Anthony] Martial because he wouldn't defend, and the board overruled him and made him play him anyway.

    Background and Points of Debate

Mbappé is a player who has long carried a reputation among European media and fans as someone who “scores but doesn’t defend,” and this latest remark comes from an interview with France Football magazine. Similar “exempt from defending” debates have followed peak-era Messi and Ronaldo as well, and within the thread, the defense that “it’s unfair to criticize a player who’s delivering results” was matched roughly evenly against the counterargument that “the excuse doesn’t hold up when the team isn’t winning titles.” Some posts even brought up images of Takefusa Kubo’s defensive stats for comparison, and it’s worth noting that opinions differed over how to interpret those numbers. There was also discussion of a more structural factor — that managers may find it harder to enforce defensive discipline on players signed at the club president’s initiative — suggesting the issue isn’t purely about individual player attitude.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Geinou Supo Sokuhou+) thread “[Soccer] Mbappé, on claims he doesn’t defend: “There’s no way a goal-scoring player should be a problem. I don’t accept that kind of opinion.”“

  • Zion Suzuki’s 40m Bullet Throw Stuns Foreign Fans: ‘Just Like Schmeichel’

Aston Villa’s Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki became a hot topic after his roughly 40-meter long throw in the September 9 UEFA Champions League clash with Club Brugge (won 3-2). Not only did he record 5 saves in his CL debut — the first ever by a Japanese goalkeeper — showing a strong presence at both ends of the pitch, but the throw itself, launched with no run-up, drew comparisons to Peter Schmeichel. On the thread, the conversation expanded from the throw’s distance into comparisons with pro baseball players and Shohei Ohtani’s speed, and even a survey on the popularity of baseball versus soccer in the US.

Making his CL debut as the first-ever Japanese goalkeeper to do so, he conceded 2 goals but recorded 5 saves, showing a strong presence at both ends of the pitch and playing a big part in the team’s 3-2 win.

    Pitcher, batter, baseball, goalkeeper —

    Background and talking points

Zion Suzuki is a product of Urawa Reds’ youth system and currently plays goalkeeper for Aston Villa. His given name, ‘彩艶,’ is read ‘Zion’ — a coincidence that happens to match the name of NBA player Zion Williamson, something the thread brought up repeatedly. The long throw is one of the modern ways goalkeepers get involved in attack, valued for delivering the ball forward quickly in addition to kicking ability. Figures like ’60 meters’ came up in the thread, but readers should note that’s fan exaggeration based on impression rather than an officially measured record. The latter half of the discussion also drifted a lot into baseball comparisons and US sports-popularity surveys — tangents separate from the main topic of evaluating Suzuki himself.

  • Fighters’ Itoh in Shouting Match with Seibu Dugout — Video Goes Viral, Sparks Debate Over What Really Happened

A video showing Nippon-Ham Fighters pitcher Itoh locked in a tense stare-down with the Seibu Lions dugout during a game has gone viral, sparking a flood of reactions on 5ch’s live-game-thread board (“Nandemo Jikkyou G”). The early theory was that Itoh snapped back after a Seibu coach accused him of sign-stealing, but partway through the thread another account surfaced claiming the real trigger was Fighters pitching coach Kuroda scolding him for “too much rosin.” Posters remain divided over which explanation is true. Seibu’s Genda reportedly looked visibly riled up too, and some pointed out that the rosin theory alone doesn’t explain that.

The rosin theory (with Kuroda as the trigger) still doesn't explain why Genda was pissed off though

    Background and Points of Debate

In pro baseball, the mind games on the mound mean that a pitcher or catcher merely glancing toward the opposing dugout is often enough to trigger sign-stealing accusations. In this case, the early part of the thread was dominated by the theory that Seibu had accused Itoh of stealing signs, but partway through, posts surfaced describing a different chain of events — that Itoh reacted badly after Fighters pitching coach Kuroda warned him about excessive rosin use. Opinions remain split, with no consensus reached. Some also pointed out that the rosin theory fails to explain why Seibu’s Genda also appeared visibly agitated, so even on 5ch the true cause hasn’t been pinned down. It’s worth noting that live-game threads are dominated by real-time reactions posted while watching the broadcast, without any input from the people actually involved, so speculation tends to spread quickly. The footage alone doesn’t reveal exactly what Itoh was arguing about, and without an official explanation from the team or the player himself, this is a story where firm conclusions should be avoided.

  • Hamaoka Nuclear Plant to Withdraw Restart Review Application; Chairman Katsuno Signals Intent to Resign

Chubu Electric Power has decided to withdraw its application to restart Units 3 and 4 of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant (Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture), after data falsification related to seismic design was discovered. In an unusual turn of events, more than a decade of review is being sent back to square one, and Chairman Tetsu Katsuno has reportedly signaled to those around him his intention to resign over responsibility for the misconduct. On 5channel, discussion ranged from views on former Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who ordered all of Hamaoka’s reactors shut down in 2011, to whether a restart should even proceed given the plant’s proximity to the earthquake’s expected epicenter, and why the stock price has stayed firm even after the withdrawal was announced.

It emerged on the 11th that Chubu Electric Power plans to withdraw its application to restart Units 3 and 4 of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant (Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture), where data falsification related to seismic design had come to light. A government source disclosed the information. It also emerged that Chubu Electric Chairman Tetsu Katsuno has signaled to those around him his intention to resign over responsibility for the misconduct. The same day, Chubu Electric announced it had received a report from the committee investigating the data falsification. On the 14th, President Kingo Hayashi will hold a press conference in Nagoya to explain the report’s contents and the company’s response. Attention is focused on the motive behind the falsification, whether it was organizationally sanctioned, and what decisions will be made about management’s future. Withdrawing an application after more than a decade of review pushes any restart even further away.

It would be highly unusual for a power company to withdraw such an application. The company may have judged that continuing the review was untenable once the reliability of the data underpinning the restart review had been undermined.

Chubu Electric disclosed the misconduct on January 5 and set up the investigative committee that same day. In announcing receipt of the report, the company commented, “We once again offer our deepest and most sincere apology for having caused such serious distrust.”

The fact that Chuden alone got its misconduct exposed so publicly is probably down to Tokyo, which is scared of a restart

    Re: #183
Chubu Electric isn't actually going to go under though, right?
But it'd be pretty cool if it really was such a noble decision

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Because Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant sits close to the expected epicenter of a Tokai earthquake, all of its reactors were shut down at the request of then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi accident, and the restart review had continued for more than a decade since. This time, data falsification involving the seismic design was uncovered, leading to the unusual decision by the utility itself to withdraw its review application. In the thread, opinions split between technical arguments over whether a restart even makes sense given the plant’s location directly above the expected epicenter, and arguments over management accountability. Some read the stock price staying firm even after the withdrawal announcement as a sign the market had already priced in a shift toward phasing out nuclear power. Note: claims comparing the number of falsification cases across different power companies were poorly substantiated and have been excluded from this summary.

Thanks… I really hope he can pull off the complete game somehow.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Since 2020, Japanese high school baseball has enforced a pitch-count limit of 500 pitches per week aimed at preventing pitcher injuries, but rules on rest days and back-to-back appearances vary from tournament to tournament and aren’t standardized across the board. The rule that sparked discussion in this thread — that a pitcher can’t take the mound again the next day — appears, based on replies in the thread, to be tied not just to player health management but also to the tournament’s aim of preserving a proper ‘country vs. country’ format, meaning it may work on a different principle than a simple pitch-count cap. Viewers accustomed to the norms of Koshien and regional high school tournaments in Japan seem especially likely to find these international-tournament-specific circumstances puzzling. Note that the final result of the game is not mentioned anywhere in this thread and remains unknown.

  • BEYOOOOONDS Announce 7th Single — Revealed on Instagram Live

On the night of September 12, Hello! Project group BEYOOOOONDS held the second installment of their “BEYOOOOON AIR” livestream on Instagram. They streamed simultaneously on TikTok LIVE, prompting posts on 5channel’s Hello! Project board comparing which platform was faster and had better picture quality. The highlight of the broadcast was the announcement that their 7th single, “Shoshi Senban / Shori no Sentaku” (roughly, “Utterly Ridiculous / The Choice of Victory”), will be released on November 25 — their first single since the group’s lineup change. Once again, the audio was hard to hear, and at one point viewers could even hear staff fumbling to adjust the sound live on air.

The audio's just as bad as ever so I basically couldn't tell what anyone was saying, but watching the members goof around happily together is fun enough on its own

    Background and Talking Points

BEYOOOOONDS is a Hello! Project group formed in 2018, and this broadcast marked the group’s first single announcement since its recent lineup change. The audio clarity issues repeatedly pointed out in the thread have been a recurring problem ever since the group started doing Instagram Lives during the pandemic, and complaints piled up again this time since nothing had improved. As for the title “Shoshi Senban / Shori no Sentaku,” opinions in the thread were divided over the track list and the intended meaning of the wording, with some posters speculating about the coupling track. Regarding the smartphone that appeared to be a personal device on stream, opinions were split over whether it belonged to a staff member or was official equipment, and this can’t be confirmed from the stream alone. This also wasn’t the first time they’ve streamed simultaneously on TikTok LIVE, and comments comparing speed and video quality come up every time.

  • Saudi Oil Pipeline Halted After Attacks — 5ch: “The US Has Zero Intention of Defending Us”

Saudi Arabia’s crude oil pipeline was hit by multiple attacks on September 10, leaving casualties and prompting a precautionary shutdown. The pipeline had been growing in importance as an alternate route bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively blockaded by Iran — but the other detour, the area around the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, is controlled by the pro-Iran Houthi militia, and reports say President Trump turned down a Saudi request to strike the Houthis. On 5ch, users traded doubts about whether the US really intends to defend its ally Saudi Arabia, along with theories on why Saudi Arabia hasn’t simply retaliated.

[Cairo, Kyodo] Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy announced on the 11th that the crude oil pipeline running east-west across the country had been hit by multiple attacks and was being shut down as a “precautionary measure.” The attack occurred on the morning of the 10th and left several people injured. The pipeline had been gaining importance as an alternate route to the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively blockaded by Iran.

Meanwhile, the US news site Axios reported on the 11th that President Trump had, on the 10th, turned down a Saudi request to strike Yemen’s pro-Iran Houthi militia, which controls the area around the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait oil transport route. The US reportedly has no intention of intervening directly, wanting to keep its focus on the Iran situation, though American officials indicated they would offer intelligence on the Houthis and help with target selection.

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait has become an alternate oil export route to the Strait of Hormuz. According to Middle Eastern media, the Houthis control strategic islands in the strait as well as port cities along the Red Sea coast, and fighting with forces of Yemen’s transitional government is believed to be ongoing.

Saudi Arabia's got money but they're weak in actual combat.
They've been at war with the Houthis for over 10 years now and still can't win.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic chokepoint linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, is considered a lifeline for oil transport on par with the Strait of Hormuz. In recent years, Yemen’s pro-Iran Houthi militia has seized control of coastal areas and nearby islands and repeatedly attacked passing ships, and this pipeline attack is believed to be an extension of that pattern. As custodian of Islam’s holy sites of Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia has little choice but to act cautiously in its foreign military actions, and despite pouring enormous sums into defense spending, it has failed to secure a decisive victory over the Houthis in more than a decade of fighting. While the thread debated whether the US should get involved and the design flaw of relying on a single pipeline, it’s worth noting that posts about Japan’s auto industry or Chinese EVs were unrelated tangents with no factual bearing on this news.

  • Over 200 Bullet Train Passengers Left Stranded After Nagaoka Fireworks — JR Had Flagged the Risk Back in February

After the Nagaoka Festival’s Grand Fireworks Display held on August 2 in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, more than 200 passengers were unable to board the last Joetsu Shinkansen non-reserved-seat train bound for Tokyo. Reporting by the Niigata Nippo has revealed that JR East had already voiced concerns back in February about the proposed changes to the festival’s program, warning there was “a risk some people won’t be able to board.” JR East reportedly asked the Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation to reconsider, but the request went unheeded. On 5ch, opinions were split over whether the Foundation had given adequate advance notice, and over the rule preventing Shinkansen trains from running after midnight.

    Niigata Nippo

Regarding the issue in which large numbers of visitors were unable to board the last Tokyo-bound Joetsu Shinkansen non-reserved-seat train after the Nagaoka Festival’s Grand Fireworks Display held in Nagaoka City on August 2, it has been learned — through reporting by the Niigata Nippo, as of the 12th — that JR East had already expressed reluctance in late February, when shown the proposed program changes, warning that “there is a concern people will be unable to board the last train.” JR East reportedly asked the organizing Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation to reconsider, but says its request was not accepted.

If it doesn't profit the locals
and doesn't help revitalize the area, they might as well scrap the fireworks festival
    84AnonymousSep 12, 2026 13:51
If you genuinely want to watch the fireworks to the very end, it costs money, but you book a hotel afterward
or drive, as long as you're careful not to doze off at the wheel
Since driving long-distance right after watching fireworks is risky, the safe pattern is to stay at a hotel somewhere and sleep before heading home

Delaying the program to squeeze a bit more money out of visitors for the local economy is one thing, but the moment you've got a flood of spectators desperately trying to force their way home, that's just bad event management

    Re: #84
You probably can't even get a hotel room in the first place
    91AnonymousSep 12, 2026 13:53
The Fireworks Foundation actually publicized this — both when selling tickets and afterward —
through their official website and local media,
saying "watching the fireworks to the end means you'll miss the last Shinkansen, so please be careful"
And on the day of the event, there were notices posted all over the venue too
    123AnonymousSep 12, 2026 14:03
Whether visitors were properly informed is really the key issue here
Honestly, neither JR nor the organizers are particularly at fault. This is basically on the visitors themselves

Like I wrote in Re: #91, there was publicity both beforehand and on the day

They've actually run overnight schedules like this before
so they should do the same as a special service for the Nagaoka fireworks

Hotels in the prefecture are probably fully booked, or insanely expensive if you can even find one
Even for the Omagari fireworks in Akita, tourists end up staying as far away as neighboring Morioka

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Nagaoka Festival’s Grand Fireworks Display originated as a memorial for the victims of the Nagaoka air raid near the end of the Pacific War — it isn’t simply a tourist event, and that history is baked into how it’s run. At the same time, Shinkansen trains can’t operate past midnight due to maintenance work, so even when the fireworks wrap up sometime in the 8 p.m. hour, it’s structurally common for visitors to miss the last train to Tokyo. What came to light this time is that JR East had already flagged concerns about the proposed schedule change back in February, yet the Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation didn’t reconsider. On the thread, opinion was split: some credited the Foundation for publicizing in advance that staying to the end would mean missing the last Shinkansen, while others criticized the response as inadequate, arguing that real countermeasures — like extra trains or addressing the hotel shortage — were still lacking. Some called for making every seat reserved, but others pointed out that even reserved-seat cars end up with standing passengers in the aisles during peak season, so that alone wouldn’t be a complete fix.

  • US IGN blasts: ‘PlayStation’s future has never looked bleaker’ — 5ch: ‘Let’s be real, they’re done for’

A US IGN opinion piece points to the Metacritic score of Insomniac Games’ new release, ‘Marvel’s Wolverine,’ dropping below 80 as evidence that “PlayStation’s future has never looked bleaker.” The piece is written by a longtime admirer of Sony’s story-focused, single-player-driven approach, and comes against a backdrop of headwinds for the PlayStation camp — including the early shutdown of the competitive shooter ‘Concord,’ studio restructuring, and the end of Sony’s partnership with Hideo Kojima. On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, reactions split between those agreeing with the assessment and those pushing back by pointing to Sony’s strong financial results.

PlayStation’s Future Has Never Looked Bleaker (PlayStation’s future has never looked more clouded over.)

It’s hard to imagine how PlayStation leadership felt watching so many critics shrug with indifference and walk away from Insomniac’s ‘Wolverine.’

A Metacritic score under 80 is, as anyone in the AAA space knows, considered a “disaster.” It surely isn’t fun for Sony either, but for a company its size, it would be easy enough to write off as “an uncharacteristic one-off mistake.”

Yeah, if you're a PS fan who genuinely loves Sony's story-driven single-player games, of course you'd want to complain once Insomniac goes downhill and Sony cuts PSYSINT loose too.
Actually, if you read the back half of the article, the writer sounds pretty disappointed that cutting ties with Kojima means no new game from him either.
    8AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:06
They probably just want to quit single-player games since they don't turn a profit.

Resident Evil, Wilds, Elden Ring, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, even Persona — all going multiplatform to Switch 2.
Fellow company loyalist Harada got the axe, and Nagoshi's studio got shut down.

In the end, Kojima Productions was the only one left standing — and then there were none.

Sorry, but Sony's games had something special back in the PS1 era, but by the PS2 era they already had one foot in mediocrity.
Game media never bothered learning any game philosophy and just kept heaping praise purely because the graphics kept improving, so Sony has been living under that delusion
    for 20 years straight.

Even now, the top criterion for GOTY is basically 'big-budget with good graphics,' right?
That's exactly why I'm calling you all shallow.
    73AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:19

I think they noticed their graphical edge was hitting a wall, so they turned to political-correctness pandering instead.
    90AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:25
    Re: #66
If you understand that much, how do you not get that Sony was pulling the strings the whole time by keeping the game media in its pocket?
    67AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:17
And yet their earnings and stock price numbers look great — it's a genuinely strange company.
What's even stranger is that even though their own earnings look great, you never hear anything good coming out of their affiliated companies, and more and more of them keep pulling away from PlayStation.
Where are those numbers even really coming from?
    84AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:23
    Re: #67
That's because PlayStation basically equals Japanese third-party publishers —
foreign developers and foreign studios are just a bonus on the side.

Xbox fanboys aren't Japanese, so they desperately trash Sony's Western-style games,
but honestly nobody here cares, and domestically Onimusha would outsell them anyway lol.
They rag on whatever random Sony title, or get smug over Kojima acting all Western-wannabe lol.

PS users only care about Japanese third-party titles — that's the only thing the earnings actually reflect.
    93AnonymousSep 12, 2026 20:25
Yeah, honestly I'm banking everything on Naughty Dog's space game.
God of War has also become a stale, formulaic series.
Insomniac took a hit with Wolverine. Guerrilla is lost in the woods.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This piece is an opinion column by IGN writer Matt Purslow, sparked directly by Insomniac Games’ new release ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ dropping below 80 on Metacritic — a score range widely considered a “disaster” for a AAA title by the industry’s own standards. The backdrop includes several years of news around Sony’s first-party studios: the early end of the competitive shooter ‘Concord,’ the dissolution of development studio PSYSINT, and the end of Sony’s partnership with Hideo Kojima. Where the thread splits is over whether this “bleak future” narrative squares with Sony’s own financial results, which look strong on paper. Some posters suggested that “domestic third-party software is what’s propping up the earnings,” but it’s worth flagging for readers that this is speculation within the thread, not a figure backed by the article or any official filings.
