  • Pouring Soy Sauce on the Sashimi Pack Lid Instead of a Dish? A Veteran TV Commentator Scolds the “Skip-the-Dish” Trend — 5ch: “I Just Pour It Straight on the Fish”

On TV Asahi’s “Yoko Oshita Wide! Scramble,” the habit of dripping soy sauce onto a sashimi pack’s lid and using it as a makeshift dipping dish was introduced as part of the “skip-the-dish scene,” and after announcer Hiroki Yamazaki brought it up, a veteran commentator scolded him: “No, don’t do that… it’ll make you go senile.” The segment had originally been covering the time-saving trend of “knife-cancel” cooking — preparing meals with kitchen scissors instead of a knife — and touched on the lid habit as an offshoot of that. On 5ch, reactions split between defenders (“it’s just practical, what’s wrong with that”) and critics (“that’s cheap-looking,” “you shouldn’t do that in public”), and the discussion spread well beyond the lid itself — to people who pour soy sauce directly onto sashimi with no dish at all, and to gripes about conveyor-belt sushi places not providing soy sauce dishes in the first place.

On the September 15 broadcast of TV Asahi’s “Yoko Oshita Wide! Scramble” (weekdays, 10:40 a.m.), while covering the growing trend of people cooking without a knife — dubbed the “knife-cancel scene” — announcer Hiroki Yamazaki’s comments about a related “cancel scene” drew a rebuke from a veteran commentator on the show.

The show covered how, as part of the broader “cancel scene” phenomenon — deliberately dropping everyday habits — more and more young people are cooking without a knife at all, a trend known as the “knife-cancel scene.” It’s believed to be driven by a desire to save time and boost efficiency (“taipa,” or time-performance), and the segment noted that a wide variety of kitchen scissors have emerged as knife substitutes, with scissors actually cutting cooking time compared to using a knife.

Apparently the original method was brushing soy sauce on with a basting brush, so that might actually be the "correct" way.
Before soy sauce could be mass-produced it was a precious commodity, so people probably didn't use dipping dishes that would leave sauce going to waste.

The "knife-cancel scene" that was in the news recently actually makes sense.
Even for filleting fish, ¥1,000–2,000 kitchen scissors can be easier to use than a knife.
I still use a deba knife for cutting a whole fish apart and a sashimi knife for skinning it, but
for an ordinary household, isn't a knife really only essential for cutting whole big vegetables or fruit?

That's giving yourself way too much credit.
Buying pre-packaged sashimi already puts everyone on roughly the same level.
If you want to point to someone actually "beneath" that, it's the guy who opens the pack and eats some before he's even paid.

    Background and Talking Points

“Knife-cancel scene” refers to a time-saving mindset among younger people who finish all their cooking with kitchen scissors instead of a knife, and the show introduced this “dish-cancel” habit as an offshoot of that trend. It’s worth noting that using a sashimi pack’s lid as a makeshift dipping dish isn’t actually new — some people have been doing it for a while. Where the thread split was over whether to prioritize the practicality of having fewer dishes to wash, or the concern that it looks cheap and bad-mannered. The veteran commentator’s “you’ll go senile” remark was meant in the context of reduced sensory stimulation dulling cognitive function, but some replies in the thread misread it as being about food losing its flavor. There’s also a decent contingent who skip dipping dishes altogether and pour soy sauce directly onto the sashimi — a nuance that the headline alone, focused just on the lid, doesn’t really convey.

  • Japan Game Awards Ceremony: Some Call Palworld “Untouchable”

The Japan Game Awards is one of the biggest awards in Japan’s domestic game industry, announced by CESA to coincide with the Tokyo Game Show; in 2026 the ceremony was held starting at 6:00 PM on September 15. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, a thread starter’s announcement touched off a wave of posts listing past winners and guessing at this year’s Grand Prize. Pokémon Legends Z-A emerged as a strong favorite, while some argued Palworld would be a tough sell given the image damage from its lawsuit with Nintendo. The thread also touched on how the judging combines public voting with a panel of judges, and how the eligibility period runs from June of the previous year through May of the award year.

Starting at 6:00 PM today, the Japan Game Awards ceremony will be held.

The Game Designers Award, being retired after this year, is scheduled to be presented near the end.

The winners of the Japan Game Awards, in every category, are decided through a mix of "public voting" and judging by a "selection committee/panel of judges" made up of industry experts and creators. Here's roughly how the main "Game of the Year" category and the other categories get decided.

So basically, that means games ordinary people haven't actually played are less likely to get picked.

"Coddling" is putting it mildly — it's basically an astroturfing squad, lol

    Background and Key Points

The Japan Game Awards is hosted by CESA (Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association) and announced during the Tokyo Game Show; the eligibility period typically runs from June 1 through May 31 of the following year for titles released domestically. Because the judging combines voting by the general public with evaluation by a panel of experts, the thread repeatedly raised doubts about the selection criteria — including the observation that “games ordinary people haven’t played are less likely to get picked,” and the recurring example that the CESA Awards (this award’s predecessor) once gave its Grand Prize to Sakura Wars over Pokémon, despite Pokémon being in the middle of a huge nationwide boom at the time. It’s also easy to confuse the Japan Game Awards with KADOKAWA’s separately run “Famitsu Awards” — Shigeru Miyamoto’s 2008 prize was actually the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, not any kind of hall-of-fame induction. As for Palworld, with its patent lawsuit against Nintendo still ongoing, discussion focused more on image concerns than on whether it could actually be selected.

Giants: Urata Shows Up on the Field but Quickly Heads Back In — Right Elbow Hurt in the Sept. 14 DeNA Game Now Taped Up
    https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/f20c3ffe869dee540c96c60778b302cdec7e0db8

Giants outfielder Shunsuke Urata, who was subbed out after getting injured on defense in the September 14 game against DeNA, appeared on the field for pregame practice. But after talking things over with a trainer, he headed back behind the dugout.

Even through his undershirt, it was clear his right elbow had been taped up.

Urata got hurt on defense in extra innings on the 14th. With two outs and a runner on second in the 10th, he made a diving catch on a shallow fly ball off the bat of Ebina — and seemed to favor his arm afterward.

Background and Key Points on This Topic

Shunsuke Urata’s right elbow injury traces back to a diving catch he made in extra innings of the September 14 game against DeNA. He showed up for pregame practice on the 15th with the elbow taped, but soon retreated behind the dugout, and his absence from the lineup was confirmed. Acting Manager Hideki Hashigami’s comment that things were “not looking great” has been read by fans as a sign his time on the sidelines could drag on. The thread didn’t stop at this one story — it also tracked same-day NPB and high school baseball news as it broke, including Daisuke Motoki’s second son Eisuke making his high school baseball debut, jockey Yoshiomi Shibata’s retirement, and the delayed gate-opening at Koshien. Rather than sticking to a single storyline, threads like this are characterized by their running, cross-cutting coverage of the first team, the farm system, and other clubs all at once.

  • Oasis Announces Tour Starting May Next Year — No Japan Dates on the List; 5ch Reacts: ‘Maybe a Venue Shortage?’

British rock band Oasis announced on September 14 that they will tour Europe and North America starting in May next year. Last year’s tour — their first world tour since reuniting — included shows in Japan and generated major buzz, but the newly announced dates don’t include any Asian stops. In the thread, many pointed to a shortage of suitable venues (箱/hako, slang for concert venue) and the weak yen as possible reasons, while others noted that this tour itself is limited to Europe and North America, leading to mixed reactions.

    9/15 (Tue) 5:42

[LONDON, Kyodo] British rock band Oasis announced on the 14th that they will kick off a tour of Europe and the United States starting in May next year. Oasis reunited and carried out a world tour last year, which included shows in Japan and drew major attention. The newly announced schedule does not include any Japan performances.

The tour opens on May 21 next year in Glasgow, Scotland, and travels through Germany, France, Italy, the United States and more, wrapping up with a show near London on September 19.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Oasis went on hiatus in 2009 before stunning fans with a reunion announcement in 2024, and last year they completed their first world tour in roughly 16 years. The newly announced tour, running from May 2026, opens in Glasgow, tours various European cities and the US, and wraps up near London in September — covering only Europe and North America. The article itself doesn’t fully address the fact that Asia, along with South America and Oceania, is also missing from the schedule. In the thread, some pointed to venue shortages and the weak yen as reasons, while others noted that this tour was simply limited to Europe and North America from the outset, splitting opinion between those who felt ‘Japan alone got cut’ and those who argued ‘other regions aren’t getting toured either.’ Some also voiced skepticism about the real state of Noel and Liam’s relationship, given their famously strained history.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “ENPLEX × Hello! Project Nagoya Regular Event” is a fan event that various Hello! Project groups hold periodically in Nagoya, centered on talk-and-live shows featuring a single member. This time’s guest, Akari Takeuchi, is an OG member who has already graduated from ANGERME, and the thread was split over whether it’s appropriate to bring an OG onto a current-member’s event. The unit name “Takerin Brothers” was coined by the two of them themselves during a radio show, not as an agency-planned gimmick. The thread also noted that Suzu Hashisako is from Aichi Prefecture. It’s worth noting that the idea floated in the thread that “Hashisako might be retiring in six months” is pure speculation from posters — neither Hashisako nor her agency has officially announced any end to her activities.

  • Japan’s Centenarians Top 100,000 for the First Time, 56th Straight Record High

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced on September 15 that the number of people aged 100 or older nationwide has reached 107,677 (up 7,914 from the previous year), topping 100,000 for the first time since record-keeping began in 1963. It’s the 56th consecutive year the figure has hit a new high, with women making up nearly 90 percent of the total. The announcement is an annual fixture ahead of Respect for the Aged Day, but reactions on 5ch split between posters celebrating the longevity trend and others worried about the growing strain on pensions and healthcare costs. Some commenters noted that people born in the Edo period were still alive into the 1960s, while others brought up the once-famous centenarian twins “Kin-san and Gin-san.”

It was learned on the 15th that the number of people aged 100 or older nationwide stood at 107,677 as of the first of this month (up 7,914 from the previous year) — the first time the figure has topped 100,000 since the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare began compiling the data. It marked the 56th straight year the record has been broken. Women accounted for 94,298, or nearly 90 percent of the total, while men numbered 13,379.

The ministry compiles these figures every year ahead of Respect for the Aged Day (the 21st). The number of centenarians has kept climbing, driven by advances in medical care and rising health awareness. There were just 153 in 1963, when record-keeping began, but the figure passed 50,000 in 2012 and has continued to grow since.

According to the ministry, the oldest person in the country is Fuyo Kishimoto, 114, of Kyoto, who reportedly looks forward to meals with fellow residents at her care facility and finishes every dish served to her. The oldest man is Hikaru Kato, 112, of Kumamoto, who stays healthy with exercise sessions at his nursing home.

well, it's already like this really

The proportion of elderly people gets insane
(Even now Japan effectively has the highest aging rate in the world)
    ↓
For old folks living off their pensions, rising prices are a life-or-death issue they won't tolerate
    ↓
Since their voices can't be ignored given their sheer numbers,
Japanese companies keep clamping down on labor costs —
in other words, keep wages suppressed to keep prices low
    ↓
The result: a society where wages for the working generation never really rise, forever

    Re: #104
It really is an aging society, huh…

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This announcement is compiled annually by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare under the Act on Social Welfare for the Elderly, ahead of Respect for the Aged Day each September. The figure has climbed steadily since record-keeping began in 1963 with just 153 people, passing 50,000 in 2012 and now topping 100,000 in 2026. The nearly 90 percent share of women reflects the gap in average life expectancy between the sexes, and there are reported cases — like the two oldest, Kishimoto (114) and Kato (112) — of centenarians living independently at care facilities. Opinions on the thread were split between those who see longer lifespans as a positive and those who link it to worries about rising pension and healthcare costs and stagnant wages for the working generation, with no clear consensus reached. It’s also worth noting that the official “100 and older” count is based purely on resident registry records and says nothing about care needs or actual independence — an easy detail to overlook if you only glance at the headline number.

  • “Pokoa” vs. “Palworld”: 5ch Sales Comparison Sparks a Fight — “It’s 8 Million Cumulative, FYI”

A thread titled “Pokoa isn’t selling as well as Palworld” on the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board sparked a debate over the actual sales numbers. Pokoa’s cumulative sales were cited as “8 million units,” while opinions split on Palworld’s early-access peak — was it “15 million” or “18 million”? Someone also posted an image showing an all-time sales ranking, but since it didn’t match the official figure of 15 million, some replies called it a “fabricated ranking.” Whether to count from early access or only after full release also became a sticking point, since the two methods give very different totals.

Sorry, but speaking as someone who's always bought PC games — early access automatically counts as owning the full release. So why is everyone only counting sales after the full release? Stuff like this should be tallied as cumulative sales starting from early access.

    91AnonymousSep 15, 2026 17:07
    Re: #89
There shouldn't need to be a bashing stick in the first place — there's no other decent home console out there anyway.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

For Steam early-access titles, publishers differ on whether to fold early-access sales into the total once a game exits early access, so figures like “15 million” and “18 million” can both end up circulating for the same title depending on when each was announced. On top of that, plays via Xbox Game Pass aren’t counted as purchases, which makes the thread’s claim that “actual sales must be higher” hard to verify from the outside. The all-time sales ranking image posted in the thread also didn’t match the official figures and had no clear source, so its accuracy couldn’t be confirmed either. Readers should note that the thread was dominated by the kind of partisan sniping typical of the Hardware/Industry board — terms like “Nishi” (a slur for Nintendo Switch fans), “buta” (“pig,” another Nintendo-fan slur), and “obstacle” got thrown around more than any real comparison of sales figures.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “[Basic Premise] Pokoa really isn’t selling anywhere near as well as Palworld, right? Why do Switch fanboys act so high and mighty about it?“

  • Komeo Speaks Out on Food Poisoning Compensation, Vows Response ‘By End of September’

A food poisoning outbreak at the “Azabu-Juban Suzumi Matsuri” summer festival, held in Tokyo’s Minato Ward on August 22–23, has drawn fresh comment from “fighting chef” Komeo, who ran a food stall there. On the 14th, he posted an update on his official X account explaining where things stand with compensation, revealing that he’s changed the contact email address for inquiries and aims to sort things out “by the end of September.” On 5channel, users debated whether insurance would cover the payout and whether the slow response was deliberate, with some also bringing up his co-run restaurant ventures and people connected to him.

“Fighting chef” Komeo, known for numerous appearances in the fight event “BreakingDown,” updated his official X (formerly Twitter) account on the 14th, addressing compensation for the food poisoning outbreak at the “Azabu-Juban Suzumi Matsuri” festival in Tokyo’s Minato Ward on August 22–23.

In the post, Komeo said, “We’ve confirmed that some emails are currently not being received properly,” and reported that he has changed the contact email address for compensation inquiries.

He'll end up just like that natto shop (referencing a notorious natto-vendor scandal)

    Background and key points

In the initial response to a food poisoning incident, organizers and vendors typically bear liability, but how much is covered by facility liability insurance and similar policies depends entirely on the contract terms — hard for outsiders to judge from the outside. Opinions on the thread split between those who saw Komeo’s slow response as “insincere” or “an attempt to dodge responsibility,” and those who saw it as “just handling each case carefully, one at a time.” As for his explanation that “some emails aren’t coming through,” some dismissed it as a flimsy excuse, while others pointed out it could genuinely be a technical glitch tied to DMARC settings on the sender’s email provider — the truth remains unconfirmed at this point. Komeo is known for competing in the fight event “BreakingDown” and also runs several food businesses, including a ramen shop in Asakusa, making this incident a test of his mettle as a business owner.

    49AnonymousSep 15, 2026 15:57
I watch a ton of TV and love comedy, but — who and who? Googled the woman and it looks like she's mainly a stage actress. For the guy, there's someone else with the same name written differently, but he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page lol. Is he just some regular guy?
    50AnonymousSep 15, 2026 15:58
About as famous as I am, lol. Why even announce it on social media? Anyone who'd actually want to know probably already heard directly, right? If people only find out via social media, it just reveals you're seen as nothing more than a casual acquaintance.
    51AnonymousSep 15, 2026 15:59
Even the person who made this thread kind of seems to be waiting for someone to explain who they are. Brutal lol
    52AnonymousSep 15, 2026 15:59
Can't even find the guy's age by Googling him lol
    55AnonymousSep 15, 2026 16:00
Checked Instagram — the woman has 2,252 followers, and the guy only has 497. That's fewer than your average random person.

    Re: #1
Only listing the woman's age seemed messed up, and turns out that's how the source article does it too. Just write 'Shogo Maruyama (43)' too! This is Sponichi Annex, basically the Mainichi Shimbun — and they still lecture people about gender with a straight face.
    63AnonymousSep 15, 2026 16:02
Who is she? Does she do comedy too?
    64AnonymousSep 15, 2026 16:03
By the way, I searched 'cute comedians' and got:

    #2 Miyuki Torii

Her Wikipedia page has a ton of stage work listed, so she seems mainly stage-based. TV appearances look pretty sparse.

Honestly, a YouTuber with a million subscribers might have more name recognition than that.

After Kaho, isn't this just way too much of a 'who?' case?
    76AnonymousSep 15, 2026 16:08
I saw something about a Kanjani Maruyama marriage and thought 'wait, is he really getting married?' but it turned out to be a completely different person.
    77AnonymousSep 15, 2026 16:08
Making a whole thread over a genuine 'who is that?' story is just nonsense.

    Background and Key Points

Both Asuka Takahashi and Shogo Maruyama are primarily stage actors, with limited television exposure. Maruyama has appeared in dramas such as Code Blue 3, but while he’s known among theater fans, he’s less familiar to viewers whose main exposure is TV. The wave of “who?” reactions on 5ch reflects less the pair’s actual lack of fame than a gap between the celebrities the media covers and the celebrities general viewers actually encounter day to day. With more actors these days building careers mainly through stage work and streaming while rarely appearing on TV, similar “who?” reactions are likely to keep coming up. Some commenters also pointed out that news reports listed the woman’s age but not the man’s — worth noting as a comment on conventions in entertainment-news reporting.

  • Popular manga ‘NANA’ teams up with Godiva — 17 years into hiatus, Ai Yazawa draws new art

Belgian luxury chocolate brand Godiva is teaming up with Ai Yazawa’s popular shojo manga NANA, releasing items like the “Chocolixer” drink at stores nationwide starting September 16. NANA began serialization in 2000 and has sold 48 million copies total, but it has been on hiatus since 2009 — now entering its 17th year. On 5channel’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, while some fans were happy to see new artwork drawn by Yazawa, many others said they’d rather see the series finished than get a collaboration, and the sheer length of the hiatus itself became the main topic of discussion.

NANA (Shueisha) is a shojo manga by Ai Yazawa that began serialization in 2000. It has sold a cumulative 48 million copies and was even adapted into a live-action film and an anime. The manga has been on hiatus since 2009, but its popularity hasn’t faded — even now, “who’s your favorite NANA character?” debates still pop up regularly on social media.

Look, we're done with the collabs and the illustrations already — if you don't have it in you to keep drawing the manga, fine, turn it into a novel, but just finish NANA.

She's a former band member who quit and debuted in a different band, so…

Background and key points of this discussion

NANA has been serialized in “Cookie” magazine since 2000 and has sold a cumulative 48 million copies, making it a major hit. It has been on hiatus since 2009 due to Ai Yazawa’s health issues, and no new chapters have appeared since. Some commenters in the thread mistakenly claimed she was recovering after being hit by a car — that actually refers to a different manga artist, Kyoko Okazaki, and the mix-up was quickly corrected. Godiva was founded in Belgium in 1926, but was acquired in 2007 by the major Turkish food conglomerate Yıldız Holding; the “the brand has gone downhill” sentiment tied to its recent flood of collaboration products stems from that change in ownership. The thread also included an incorrect claim that Godiva had become a Korean company, which this article excludes in favor of accurate information. Fan reactions were split between excitement over the new artwork and calls to finish the series instead of doing collaborations, bringing renewed attention to just how long the 17-year hiatus has been.
