  • Three Men Go Missing on Lake Biwa — Only Their Rented Jet Ski Found on the Water

At around 11:30 a.m. on September 21, 2026, a rental shop on Lake Biwa in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, called police to report that three men who had rented a jet ski (personal watercraft) had not returned. Only the jet ski itself was later found on the lake, and police and fire crews continue to search for the men. On the thread, posters debated whether the rental shop had actually checked the men’s boating licenses and ID, whether they had been wearing life jackets, and whether rough water from an approaching typhoon may have been a factor. At the same time, a fair number of crude comments mocking the region or the victims cropped up, making for a mix of fact-checking and mean-spirited joking.

    The Black Tri-Coupling

Note: “Mash, Ortega, and Gaia” is a joke referencing the “Black Tri-Stars,” a legendary three-man ace pilot squad from the Gundam anime franchise — the poster is comparing the three missing men to the famous trio. The reply in #47 mangles the names into crude puns and swaps “Tri-Stars” (三連星) for “Tri-Coupling” (三連結, like coupled train cars) as a joke.

Even Lake Tazawa, Japan's deepest lake, is only about 400 meters deep

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Unlike road vehicles, personal watercraft (PWC) in Japan require a small-craft operator’s license (specifically a “special small-craft license” for jet skis), and rental shops normally ask to see it before handing over the keys. A 2018 legal revision also made wearing a life jacket mandatory in principle. The thread split along two main lines: skepticism about whether the license and ID checks actually happened (with some suspecting the men simply rode off without returning the craft), and criticism of the poor judgment shown in going out on the water with a typhoon approaching. Some posts claimed two of the men were in cardiac arrest, but this was unverified information based on live news coverage and had not been confirmed as of the source article. A number of crude comments mocking the region or the victims also appeared in the thread; since the people involved in this accident are real individuals, those remarks have been left out of this article.

  • “Without Income-Based Multi-Spouse Marriage, Japan’s Birthrate Won’t Stop Falling” — GaaSyy’s Opinion Post Sparks Reaction

Former House of Councillors member and current rakugo performer GaaSyy updated his X account by September 20, 2026, posting: “We need a multi-spouse marriage system based on income, or Japan’s declining birthrate won’t stop.” He argued that if someone earns 20 million yen a year, they should be allowed two spouses — boosting tax revenue and the number of children while cutting down on infidelity and affairs. On 5channel, reactions ranged from cool dismissals like “You can basically already do something like this on your own” and “This is too unrealistic to bother debating,” to more sympathetic takes such as “There’s a side to this where the haves support the have-nots.” Opinions were split over how realistic this would be as a birthrate countermeasure and what benefits it might actually offer men and women.

Influencer GaaSyy, a former Upper House lawmaker who also works as a rakugo performer, updated his X account by the 20th, bringing up the idea of a “multi-spouse marriage system.”

[Photo] The former Upper House lawmaker’s new look

GaaSyy opened with: “Yeah, without a multi-spouse marriage system based on income, the birthrate just isn’t going to stop falling lol.” He went on to share his personal take: “If you make 20 million yen a year, let them have two wives or two husbands — tax revenue would go up, the number of kids would go up, and I think affairs and cheating would go down too lol.”

Even if lots of kids get born, there's basically no hiring for jobs that pay new grads enough to actually save money.

Have you already forgotten the Employment Ice Age, back when there was a whole big generation of kids and nowhere for them to go?

What matters is how many jobs actually pay new grads enough to save — that's everything.
    20AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
Sounds nice in theory, but isn't there not much upside for the guys?
    21AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
Having multiple wives doesn't automatically mean more kids, though.
    22AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
With two wives, even on 20 million yen a year, you've got more mouths to feed, so you'd end up living like a 10-million-yen household.
And you'd have twice as many kids.
Wives wouldn't live any better than if they were the sole spouse either, so only lower-ranked women would agree to a multi-wife setup.
And the real problem is divorce — even if you don't divorce, if one of the other wives does, your assets still take a hit.
    23AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
Japan's biggest population boom (right after the war) had nothing to do with polygamy at all.

And the 17th-century boom, over roughly a 100-year span, was driven by new farmland development — polygamy barely factored in. Even back then, only rich people practiced it.

The real secret to boosting population is simple: force everyone into arranged marriages — ugly guys, unattractive women, low earners, all of it. That's it.
    25AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:59
    Re: #23
Even if you force people into marriage like that, they probably still won't have kids.

    32AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:01
Too unrealistic to even bother debating.
    35AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:02
Guys who push for polygamy just want more women — they don't actually want more kids.
    61AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:12
You hear this kind of opinion sometimes, but high-income couples who actually want kids basically already have them. And even at a 10-million-yen household income, raising just one kid is a financial squeeze — so I doubt there are many people richer than that who'd still want even more kids than they already have.
    75AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:16
    Re: #61
For household income, husband at 7 million and wife at 3 million is just a normal family. The media loves calling couples "power couples," but I'd say husband at 12 million and wife at 7 million is more like it.
    68AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:14

The effect would be basically zero. Take Furuta — his wife Nakai can't have kids, they have none, and he still hasn't divorced her or adopted. Polygamy just doesn't mesh well with a country that values human rights.
    88AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:21

Polygamy isn't just about male desire — there's also a side to it where the haves lift the have-nots out of poverty.
    90AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:22
Multiple wives, sure, but multiple husbands? Even with two husbands, one wife can't exactly pop out a ton of kids.
    95AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:26
    Re: #90
Exactly. The pace of childbirth wouldn't change at all — all you'd get is the downside of not knowing if the kid is even yours. Most men would say "no way" to raising a kid that isn't their own blood. Polyandry only really works in places like a few pockets of China or Southeast Asia, where men don't need to work in the first place.

    Background and Points of Debate

Article 732 of Japan’s Civil Code bans bigamy, so introducing a “multi-spouse marriage system” would require a fundamental overhaul of the legal framework. GaaSyy’s comment was offered as a personal opinion without addressing this legal reality, and many in the thread were quick to question how realistic it actually is. As for birthrate countermeasures, the relationship between income and number of children isn’t so simple — higher-income households aren’t necessarily more likely to have kids, and as some pointed out, even households earning in the 10-million-yen range still find child-rearing a financial strain. There’s also the view that Japan’s postwar population boom was driven mainly by the spread of arranged marriage (omiai), not polygamy, suggesting that policies aimed at boosting the marriage rate itself might be more effective than changing the shape of the marriage system. GaaSyy is a former House of Councillors member who was formally expelled from the chamber, and some see the point of remarks like these as less about their truth or feasibility and more about grabbing attention.

  • Seiichiro Yamashita ends impromptu autograph signings — 5ch: ‘Seeing them resold kills my motivation’

Voice actor Seiichiro Yamashita (34), known for roles including Ace Trappola in “Disney Twisted-Wonderland,” announced on X on the 21st that he will stop doing impromptu autograph signings at train stations and other spots after events. Until now he had signed fans’ merchandise whenever approached, but word spread and requests from fans kept increasing. On 5ch threads, opinions clashed — some defended ending these off-the-record signings as only natural, while others voiced frustration over apparently resale-driven requests, debated whether the decision was right, and argued over just how famous he really is.

Give me one convincing reason why I'd need to help some stranger's resale business for free

Background and Key Points of This Story

What was actually announced this time concerns informal autograph requests made when he’s approached at places like train stations while out and about — not at official venues such as event sites — and doesn’t mean he’s ending organized signing events altogether. Cases of voice actors’ and actors’ autographs being resold on flea-market apps have never stopped, and in recent years it has repeatedly become an issue that the goodwill behind a signed autograph ends up feeding someone else’s resale profit. Opinions on the thread split between those who saw ending the practice as “obviously just self-protection” and those who criticized scaling back before he’s even that widely known as him “getting a big head” — and views were similarly divided over how popular he really is and how his signature roles are regarded. Because these informal encounters happen without any involvement from his talent agency, there’s also a risk that a fan who gets turned away vents frustration on social media, sparking unexpected trouble.

    Re: #74
The lowest was 3.5%, but the average was actually 4.4%

    Background and points of discussion

The Getsuku (Monday 9pm) slot was once Fuji TV’s flagship drama timeslot, but in recent years it has struggled with weak ratings, prompting more attempts to generate buzz through headline-grabbing guest casting. YOSHIKI and GACKT, both musicians who came up through the visual-kei scene, had never appeared together before; this time the pairing came about after an exchange on social media, which drew attention. On the thread, some expressed surprise at the “26 years” figure or nostalgia for YOSHIKI’s past work, while many others questioned how much a guest appearance could really do for the drama’s reception or ratings, leaving opinions split on Fuji TV’s casting strategy itself. Details of how the appearance came about, and what YOSHIKI will actually do on screen, won’t be known until the finale airs.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “YOSHIKI to Appear on Fuji TV’s “Getsuku” for the First Time in 26 Years! Teaming Up with GACKT for the First Time After an Exchange on X, Appearing as Himself.”

  • Does the “Dark Dimension” Hypothesis Link Dark Matter and Dark Energy?

Recent observations suggesting that dark energy may actually be weakening have led to a new proposal: an unknown dimension called the “Dark Dimension,” offered as a possible key to the mystery. Under this hypothesis, the dimension arises from the interaction between dark matter and dark energy, an idea derived from superstring theory. On the 5ch Science News+ thread, serious debate over the universe’s breakdown of mass and energy mixed with jokes — parodies centered on Saint Seiya special-attack names topped the list — while some posters questioned how far the theory could ever be tested by observation.

What is the “Dark Dimension” that might link the universe’s two great mysteries, dark matter and dark energy?

Recent research has raised the possibility that dark energy is weakening. As debate continues over why, an unknown dimension called the “Dark Dimension” — arising from interaction with dark matter — may hold the key to the mystery.

For those who see the world as a dark place, it seems the universe is a dark place too.

Isn't it contradictory that dark matter is 25% yet accounts for 85% of the universe's mass?

Currently observed atoms make up 15% of the universe's mass, so together that's supposed to add up to 100%, apparently

It's confirmed that dark matter has mass in space, so it's using up energy.

Dark matter generates mass because it has drag/friction in the universe, so of course dark energy would arise too

25% of the total when you count mass and energy together,
versus 85% when you look at mass alone
    9AnonymousSep 21, 2026 02:20
70% of the universe's expansion is dark energy, and 30% is energy whose source has been identified — together that's supposed to make 100%
    11AnonymousSep 21, 2026 02:29
    Re: #10

The atoms currently observed generate 15% of the universe's mass

If we only count the atoms we can observe, energy consumption in space would be low, meaning that — for just those observed atoms — faster-than-light travel would become possible
If you pass only through the spots where our observable atoms are, you could move at high speed, but with no friction you'd go off course. Though if you collide with dark matter above a certain speed, maybe dark matter's mass could let you steer your course?
    13AnonymousSep 21, 2026 02:33
    Re: #11
It's a contradiction: dark matter slows the universe's expansion, yet dark energy is what's supposedly accelerating it
Dark matter is only 25% of the whole universe, so isn't something off here?

Shouldn't we need more precise observations of whether the universe's expansion is faster or slower than the speed of light?

    >>What we normally perceive are three spatial dimensions plus one time dimension. But string theory posits six or seven additional dimensions on top of those. All of these extra dimensions are thought to be as small as physically possible, close to the Planck length (10⁻³⁵m). However, researchers have proposed that the dark dimension could be far larger than the other dimensions — on the order of 1 micrometer (10⁻⁶m).

The idea that dark matter exists as actual physical matter is settled.

In the universe, dark matter is 25%
    Currently observed atoms are 75%

     Regarding the universe's expansion
    Dark energy is 70%

Even if a UFO could move faster than light, the instant it passes through a region with dark matter, mass is generated, so it's certain to decelerate

It's beyond doubt that UFOs travel along a route that avoids dark matter, but as proven in Re: #14, merely moving faster than light doesn't stop it from being 100% observable by telescopes

Every single one of those UFO teleportation videos must be fake
    26AnonymousSep 21, 2026 03:07
    Re: #25

Maybe the trick to high-speed travel in the universe is: use dark matter as a cushion — "building up the route" — and supply energy so the currently observed atoms can move faster than light?

Currently observed atoms make up 15% of the universe's mass, so you'd need to calculate the mass along the route from point A to point B
Maybe you'd need to fix the dark matter in place along a circular route between A and B, like a racetrack, so the energy can't escape?

But there's a phenomenon where galaxy mergers blow dark matter away, so maybe that whole setup is impossible?
    27AnonymousSep 21, 2026 03:07
Why overthink it — why not just call it mass trapped inside every black hole?
You can't observe the inside of a black hole, but it's still there, right?
    29AnonymousSep 21, 2026 05:45
So the Dark Dimension hypothesis is basically a spinoff of superstring theory
Under this hypothesis, dark matter interacts through nothing but gravity
Which means, if that's right, the WIMP and axion theories are both wrong, and the WIMP and axion search experiments would end up empty-handed
Of course, the fact that existing dark matter detection experiments haven't found anything doesn't prove this hypothesis is correct either
Also, there's apparently a prediction that Newton's gravity equation breaks down at the micron scale,
so I guess the question is whether that can be tested going forward

Reanalysis of supernova observation data suggests "the universe's expansion may not be accelerating"
    September 20, 2026, 11:10 PM
    https://gigazine.net/news/20260920-supernova-cosmic-acceleration-questioned/
Conventional wisdom has held that "the universe keeps expanding, and its pace is increasing," but a research team from India's Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the UK's University of Oxford used a catalog of observational data from more than 1,700 supernovae to test whether the evidence actually backs up "accelerating expansion" — and found there's a possibility that expansion isn't accelerating after all.

    (omitted)

Going forward, the team says it wants to verify these results using data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's wide-field survey program, the "Legacy Survey of Space and Time." That survey is expected to observe several hundred thousand supernovae.

Sounds like Saturnia-chan, who slaps "Devils" onto everything (little-devil character from the anime Gabriel DropOut).

Background and Talking Points on This Topic

Under the current standard model of cosmology, the universe’s energy/mass breakdown is roughly 68% dark energy, 27% dark matter, and 5% observable ordinary matter. In the thread, several different ratios were thrown around — “85% dark matter, 15% ordinary matter,” “25% dark matter, 75% ordinary matter,” and so on — leading to some talking-past-each-other moments; this appears to stem from conflating mass-based ratios with total-energy-based ratios, and it’s worth noting these figures differ from the standard ones. Also, the “Dark Dimension” is, at the end of the day, just one hypothesis derived from superstring theory — it could potentially be tested in the future through deviations in Newtonian gravity at the micron scale, but it has not been demonstrated at this point. The thread also touched on a reanalysis of supernova data (per a Gigazine article) that questions the universe’s accelerating expansion itself — that’s a separate line of research questioning the existence of dark energy altogether, and shouldn’t be conflated with the above.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Science News+) thread “[Cosmology] What is the “Dark Dimension” that might link the universe’s two great mysteries, dark matter and dark energy?“.

  • Free-to-play ‘Zenless Zone Zero’ earns praise — 5ch: ‘Japan’s game makers are doomed’

The thread kicked off when a user who wasn’t getting much use out of their PS5 went looking for a free game to play, tried HoYoverse’s ‘Zenless Zone Zero,’ and posted that it was ‘insanely fun.’ Opinions split from there: some praised how enjoyable it is even without spending money, plus the quality motion and effects, while others complained the story drags on too long, the combat has good pacing but is too easy, and the limited-time events feel monotonous. Some even suggested that a free title reaching this level of polish threatens the very reason packaged (retail) games exist.

The recent pinball one was actually pretty fun though lol

Background and key points of this discussion

“Zenless Zone Zero” is a free-to-play action RPG that miHoYo (HoYoverse) began releasing in 2024, using the same gacha monetization model as Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Opinion in the thread split because the same feature — that it’s fully playable without spending money — is praised by some as generous design and criticized by others as making the combat “too easy” and “lacking challenge.” There were also comments noting that, compared to consoles, the mobile version is at a disadvantage in screen size and controls, meaning satisfaction with the same title can vary depending on the platform used to play it. The revenue model built around gacha pulls and limited-time events — typical of free-to-play games — likely underlies complaints about the story’s length and the events’ monotony, though that connection is hard to pin down from the individual posts alone.

  • ANGERME’s Show Cancelled — Band Live-Streams From the Studio Instead

At 6:25 PM on September 21, 2026, ANGERME’s official YouTube channel premiered a “ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL 2026 Live Stream.” In the video’s comments, leader Ise Suzuran wrote, “Unfortunately, we’re really frustrated about the cancellation, but we’re bringing you our all-out performance from the studio,” suggesting that after their on-site performance was cancelled, studio-recorded footage was delivered instead. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, viewers kept up a running commentary trying to determine whether the stream was truly live or pre-recorded, scrutinizing clues like whether the members were holding mics, slight timing gaps in the backing track, and the camera work.

At a livehouse you can hear it

    Background and Key Points

Rock in Japan Festival is a major outdoor rock festival held every autumn, and this time ANGERME’s on-site performance was cancelled for reasons not specified, with studio-recorded footage premiering at 6:25 PM instead — a sequence of events reflected in leader Ise Suzuran’s comment-section message: “Unfortunately, we’re really frustrated about the cancellation, but we’re bringing you our all-out performance from the studio.” Around the same time, heavy rain warnings were issued for several municipalities in Chiba Prefecture, which also became a talking point on the thread, though no direct causal link to the cancellation was confirmed there. Opinions on the stream were split: some posts overlooked the “premiere” label and mistook it for a genuine live broadcast, while others tried to work out that it was actually pre-recorded by picking up on clues like the members singing without mics and slight timing gaps in the backing track.

  • Capcom: “Monster Hunter Buyers Surely Want to See the Story” — 5ch: “That’s Exactly the Worst Part”

A quote attributed to Capcom about Monster Hunter Wilds — to the effect that “buyers surely want to see as much of the story as possible” — became a hot topic on 5ch. Thread posters pointed out that story presentation has been emphasized ever since World, and many questioned the logic of treating a “high story-clear rate” as proof of success, with several calling the story “the single biggest complaint.” Others spoke up in defense of the characters and cutscene direction, splitting opinion over the series’ approach to storytelling.

    Re: #99
If the story were more like "we're doomed unless we hunt or drive off every monster here!" that'd be one thing, but when it's about "protecting the ecosystem" it just contradicts itself constantly
    101AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:35
I bought it because it's Monster Hunter, but as someone who avoids "cutscene games," Wilds was the worst. I'll buy the DLC too, but if it's another cutscene-fest I'm giving it an instant 👎. Is Monster Hunter picking up Square Enix's bad habits or something?
    104AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:37
    Re: #101
You can kind of see them wanting to make an FF game in there… Like, who's even asking for "roles"?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Monster Hunter’s story presentation used to amount to little more than villager conversations and monster-ecology cutscenes up through the PSP era, but that changed with the introduction of full-fledged cinematic storytelling starting with 2018’s World. In the thread, opinion split between those who welcomed this shift and those skeptical of using a “high story-clear rate” as proof of its success. A recurring point was the disconnect between the series’ traditional style of play — where “the endgame content is the real game” — and a production approach that now emphasizes story. Posters also contrasted this with FromSoftware’s minimal-exposition style and voiced concern that Monster Hunter might be edging closer to other companies’ story-driven titles. Notably, the debate wasn’t framed as mere taste in presentation, but as a question touching the series’ very identity.

  • Momoiro Clover Z Livestreams Free Yokohama Stadium Show, Peak of 12,000 Viewers Sparks Debate

Momoiro Clover Z streamed their Yokohama Stadium concert live and free on YouTube with no archive, drawing roughly 12,000 concurrent viewers at its peak. The venue saw a 24-song setlist spanning old favorites to new releases, and the group also announced their next self-produced show, “Momoclo Autumn Peach God Festival 2026” (October 17-18, Chōsei Village, Chiba Prefecture). Opinion on the thread split over how to judge that viewer count, with some calling it “impressive given their current popularity” and others dismissively calling it “a step down compared to Hello! Fundamentally there's a limit to what voice alone can do — but with a band or orchestra behind you, the same song can get a spring arrangement, a summer arrangement, an autumn arrangement, a winter arrangement, a mountain arrangement, a sea arrangement, a morning arrangement, a night arrangement, a small-venue arrangement, a massive-venue arrangement — total freedom.
Can't blame you for not getting it if you've never experienced it, but it's a shame

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Momoiro Clover Z livestreamed their Yokohama Stadium concert free on YouTube with no archive, drawing a peak of roughly 12,000 concurrent viewers. Their next self-produced show, “Momoclo Autumn Peach God Festival 2026,” has already been announced for October 17-18 in Chōsei Village, Chiba Prefecture — an easy detail to overlook amid how active the group continues to be. On the thread, opinion split over how to read that 12,000 figure. Against claims that it’s “a step down compared to Hello! Project,” others countered that “a number like that for a no-archive live stream is impressive” and “they’ve actually pulled off solo stadium and dome shows, which gives that argument real weight.” It’s worth noting that a simple concurrent-viewer count doesn’t capture archived viewing or plays across multiple platforms, so declaring one group more popular than another based on that number alone is premature. There was also disagreement over how to interpret streaming-chart rankings regarding the ratio of new to old songs, which spiraled into a battle of dueling screenshot sources.

  • Out of Nowhere, a Megabank Demands ‘¥23 Million’ Back — Renouncing an Inheritance Becomes a Hot Topic

The mother of an Asahi Shimbun reporter received certified mail from Mitsubishi UFJ Bank stating it wanted to “confirm her intention to repay ¥23 million.” Her older brother, who lived in Nara, had died leaving debt behind, and as his younger sister, she had become a legal heir. On 5ch, most comments said “just renounce the inheritance” — but others pointed out the real hassle and cost involved, like gathering family register documents and filing with the family court, plus the crucial detail that the renunciation deadline is “3 months from the day you find out,” sparking a broader discussion.

“A letter suddenly arrived from the bank demanding ¥23 million back — what am I supposed to do?” That was the call the reporter, currently on assignment in Tochigi, got in July from their mother back home in Osaka. It turned out their uncle, who lived in Nara, had died carrying debt, and their mother, as his younger sister, had become his heir. Renouncing the inheritance seemed like the only option, but what exactly did that involve? Facing a problem that could ensnare almost anyone, the reporter took it on from afar.

“We would like to confirm your intention to repay ¥23 million.”

In mid-July, a registered letter with that message arrived addressed to the reporter’s mother from Mitsubishi UFJ Bank. Flustered, she suspected it might be a scam. The contact listed was the “West Japan Loan Branch,” but searching online turned up nothing. When the reporter called the bank’s call center, it took a while — perhaps because it’s a little-known department — but they were able to confirm the branch really existed.

If the daughter's renouncing it anyway, they should just overhaul the law so that settles the whole thing right there.

Could be intentional, but plenty of people die from illness or accidents with no such intent — that happens too. Can't really be helped, right? For the intentional cases, renouncing the inheritance is the way to go, though if there's still a net-positive estate even after offsetting the debt, it might be worth a second thought.

If more people did that, lenders would have no choice but to stop lending or jack up interest rates — it's the people honestly trying to pay it back who end up losing out.

Either way, since it'll just get renounced and they can't recover it, I doubt they'd actually pursue it. There's no way you'd get a loan with no collateral anyway — sounds made up.

    Re: #15
Legally, yes — though they have to justify it to the local government office. As for the hassle, it includes the original family registers too, so tracing the chain requires pulling multiple family register documents and visiting several government offices.

    77AnonymousSep 21, 2026 17:21
    Re: #57
It's 3 months from when you find out, so since she found out via this bank notice, the 3 months start from here. For elderly people, hiring a lawyer still feels like a high hurdle — 3 months goes by fast.

Regarding the renunciation deadline, "the moment you learned the inheritance began (the day you found out)" means the moment you learn the deceased has died AND recognize that "you have legally become an heir."
During this 3-month consideration period, you must file the renunciation with the family court within 3 months of this "moment you found out."

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Under Article 915 of Japan’s Civil Code, renouncing an inheritance requires filing with the family court within 3 months of the day you learn the inheritance has begun. Crucially, that clock starts not from “the day you learned of the death” but from “the day you realized you were an heir” — which is why, as in this case, relatives living far away can receive notice at an unexpectedly late stage. It’s also easy to overlook that accepting even part of the estate, or paying off any of the deceased’s debts, can count as “simple acceptance” (単純承認), after which renunciation is no longer possible. While many commenters on the thread said “just renounce it, simple as that,” opinions split over the real-world hassle and cost of gathering family register documents and filing with the family court, as well as how heavy a burden this notice places on elderly recipients. Cases where creditors like banks trace family registers to track down distant relatives are likely to remain common going forward.
