  • Hiroaki Hirata Pitches the Dubbed Version, But 5ch Still Swears by Subtitles

Voice actor Hiroaki Hirata appeared at a screening event for the dubbed version of director Christopher Nolan’s new film “The Odyssey,” pushing hard for the dub. The film, based on Homer’s epic and starring Matt Damon, sparked a flood of reactions on 5ch — some argued “the actor’s real voice is better,” others countered that “subtitles eat up all your focus just trying to read them.” While many felt comedies and sitcoms suit dubbing, plenty of others said original-language audio is better for performances that hinge on acting skill, splitting opinion down the middle between subtitle and dub camps.

Voice actor Hiroaki Hirata (63) attended a screening event in Tokyo on the 21st celebrating the smash-hit dubbed version of the American film “The Odyssey.”

The latest film from director Christopher Nolan, known for works like “Oppenheimer,” stars American actor Matt Damon. Based on the ancient Greek poet Homer’s epic of the same name, it depicts the hero Odysseus’s decade-long journey home after the Trojan War.

Fair point, but voice actor dubbing is way too over-the-top. And it's so one-note that it doesn't matter who's doing it.

The Big Bang Theory is definitely better subtitled. Not that the dub is bad, but Sheldon's weirdness comes through better in the original performance.

Agreed. Even shows that aren't full-blown comedies but have a lighter tone work well dubbed — Columbo, for instance.

Jackie Chan is the one exception — that Ishimaru guy's dub voice feels more "real" than his actual one. (Hiroya Ishimaru is Jackie Chan's longtime Japanese dub voice actor)

Uncharted is great dubbed, but I tried it with subtitles and the mumbly dialogue made it boring lol
    13AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:52
Subtitle purists spend over 80% of their attention just reading the text — they've got no bandwidth left to actually take in the real voice, let alone the acting.
The normal move is to watch the dub first to get the dialogue and plot, then watch the original version.
Besides, Hirata, with the nuance you bring to your own dub performances, that's plenty for casual viewers.
    49AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:02

Reading speed varies a lot by person, so someone who reads fast isn't using anywhere near 80% of their attention. Subtitles don't even have that many characters to begin with.

    Re: #110
Well, subtitles are the mainstream choice in practice, so it can't be helped.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The dub-versus-subtitles debate has long been a recurring topic in how Japanese audiences watch foreign films and dramas, and this time the spark was a voice actor himself publicly advocating for the dub in a public setting. On the thread, the dominant reasoning wasn’t a simple either-or stance but a genre-based split — “comedies suit dubbing,” “serious performances come through better in the original language.” Works like Jackie Chan’s films or Columbo are cases where the dubbed version actually became more beloved in Japan than the original ever was abroad, which can be seen as a product of Japan’s uniquely developed dubbing culture. At the same time, the spread of streaming services — which let viewers freely switch between subtitles and dubbing — has fueled more comments along the lines of “I watch both” or “I pick depending on the situation.” There was also some discussion of whether AI-generated voices might eventually replace voice actors’ work, though it’s worth noting this was purely viewer speculation about the future, not something Hirata himself actually said.

  • Final Fantasy’s “Greatest Entry” Debate: Japanese Fans Split Between 5/6/10, Western Fans Rally Behind 7/8

A thread on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board asked, “What’s the greatest Final Fantasy game?” According to posters, Japanese players tend to champion FF5, FF6, and FF10, while overseas players’ support clusters around FF7 and FF8. Some noted this pattern was sparked by discussion of which FF titles various Hololive VTuber members have played. The thread saw takes like “FF6 poured too many resources into presentation” and “FF7 kicked off the cutscene-heavy era, leaving less room for imagination,” while others pushed back by noting that FF6 and FF12 often top overseas fan-ranking projects — turning it into a debate over the gap between gut feeling and actual poll numbers.

The ones who say this are always 8 fanboys.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

In fan polls for the FF series, gut-feeling impressions and actual tallied results tend to diverge. While the thread claimed “overseas fans favor FF7 and FF8,” some pushed back, noting that FF6 and FF12 often top the rankings in overseas fan-voting projects — turning the gap between perception and statistics into a central point of debate. FF6 is said to have been called “the most polished FF” by its own developer, Hironobu Sakaguchi, yet it’s also a game that splits opinion, given experimental-for-its-time features like factoring a character’s raw level directly into damage calculations. As for FF7, some pointed out that the ‘FFVII 20th Anniversary Ultimania’ notes it faced criticism at launch over its linear progression and the arrow indicators on the world map — a reminder that its current reputation as the “greatest FF of all time” wasn’t the consensus from day one, but was largely shaped years later, a detail that’s easy to overlook.

  • Newly Released Lyric Video Already Losing Steam? Some Blame ‘the Source Manga Isn’t Finished Yet’

A thread went up on 5ch’s Love Live! board after the lyric video for “Ikizu Live”‘s new song was released. The original poster pointed out that even though things are supposedly “on a roll,” the view count isn’t climbing, and other posts piled on with complaints that Ietora’s voice wasn’t included and questions about why an anime adaptation still hasn’t been announced. Some speculated the real cause might be that Kimino-sensei’s original story still isn’t finished, while others recalled how the buzz fizzled out the same way after past live shows.

If you want to scream your lungs out, go to an iM@S concert instead.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Ikizu Live” is a series based on Kimino-sensei’s original story, and this time the topic was the release of the new song’s lyric video. Opinions in the thread split over where to place the blame for the sluggish view count — some speculated it’s because the source material isn’t finished, while it could simply be that an anime announcement is still a way off. The claims in posts #5 and #16 that “Kimino-sensei’s original story isn’t finished yet” are strictly speculation from thread posters, not something officially confirmed by the production side, so that’s worth keeping in mind. Also, as noted in post #11, there’s a recurring pattern where excitement spikes briefly right after past live shows before interest fades, and worries were repeatedly voiced that the same pattern might play out again this time. At the same time, posts like #19–21 show people looking forward to the setlist for the next live and expressing genuine affection for the series as a whole, suggesting the overall mood isn’t simply one of disappointment.

  • MrBeast, With 500 Million Subscribers, Builds $10 Million Village in Ghana to End Child Labor

On September 20, MrBeast — the world’s biggest YouTuber with 517 million subscribers — released a video showing him building an entire village from scratch on empty land in Ghana, complete with houses, a school, wells, and farms, all in an effort to end the child labor rampant on the country’s cocoa farms. The project cost roughly 1.6 billion yen (about $10 million), and the video racked up over 39 million views in under a day. Reactions on 5channel were mixed: many were stunned and impressed by his enormous subscriber count and the sheer scale of the project, while others voiced skepticism about how much the aid would actually help, and a debate broke out comparing his spending to the charitable efforts of popular Japanese YouTubers.

On September 20, American YouTuber MrBeast (517 million subscribers) released a video titled “I Built A City To Save Kids From Illegal Labor.” The project set out to eliminate illegal child labor on Ghana’s cocoa farms by building an entire village from scratch on an empty field, at a total cost of about $10 million (roughly 1.6 billion yen). The video has drawn more than 39 million views in about a day since release.

MrBeast is known for large-scale projects like the reality show “Beast Games,” which offered a $10 million prize, and a game of tag in which he tried to evade 100 real police officers. He boasts the world’s largest subscriber count at 517 million. He’s also a dedicated philanthropist, and through his chocolate brand Feastables, he has repeatedly raised awareness of child labor in the cocoa industry.

This time, the project involved building an entire village — complete with houses, a school, wells, and farms — from nothing on empty land in Ghana’s Eastern Region. He opens the video by saying, “So many kids are being forced into illegal labor,” before declaring, “Over the past year I spent about $10 million to take on the biggest project (I’ve) ever done.”

This is 'misinformation' that mixes together a few different news stories and misunderstandings.

It's true that MrBeast spent about $14 million (roughly 2.1 billion yen) building a massive town on empty land,
but that wasn't to solve child labor — it was built as a filming set for a big reality show that streamed on Amazon.

MrBeast does run a charity channel, and in the past in Africa
he's done projects supplying schools and hospitals and building houses and bridges.

Meanwhile, Japan's top YouTuber was busy showing off a watch he bought────

    Background and Points of Debate

Through his chocolate brand Feastables, MrBeast has repeatedly drawn attention to the child labor problem deeply rooted in West Africa’s cocoa industry, and this project is an extension of that ongoing effort. Child labor on cocoa farms is a real issue that international bodies like the ILO have flagged for years — it isn’t something invented for this story. One thread post claimed, based on an answer from Gemini (AI), that the project was actually a reality-show set rather than a genuine child-labor initiative, but other posters pushed back, saying ‘just watch the actual video and you’ll see’ — a moment that highlighted the risk of taking AI summaries at face value. The thread also lit up comparing this to donation amounts from popular Japanese YouTubers, but it’s easy to overlook that subscriber counts and ad revenue are on an entirely different scale between the English-speaking market and the Japanese-speaking one, which complicates any simple comparison of ‘generosity.’

  • Tokyo Game Show buzz: fewer Chinese-affiliated booths and a shortage of new game reveals

Attendees shared their impressions of Tokyo Game Show (TGS) on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board. The main topic was the shrinking number of Chinese-affiliated booths — a cited Yahoo! News article reported that, against a backdrop of worsening Japan-China relations, Chinese game companies’ participation had dropped sharply, with large booths almost nowhere to be seen. In the thread, users debated how exhibitor numbers are actually counted, the shortage of new title announcements, and frustration with promotion strategies that lean entirely on famous streamers — all reflecting the changing landscape around Tokyo Game Show. Some also pointed out that with E3 gone, TGS has become the longest-running dedicated game trade show left in the world.

Background and key points of this discussion

Tokyo Game Show is one of Japan’s largest annual video game trade fairs, held every autumn at Makuhari Messe and hosted by CESA (the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association). It has a history of splitting off from the Tokyo Toy Show, and while Nintendo stayed away for a long stretch, it has resumed exhibiting in recent years. The U.S.’s E3 officially ended in 2023, making TGS one of the longest-running dedicated trade shows still in existence. Regarding the drop in Chinese-affiliated booths discussed in the thread, the cited reporting pointed to worsening Japan-China relations as one contributing factor. That said, some noted that exhibitor counts can vary depending on whether a company had a public booth or was only present in the back business-meeting area, so simple company-count comparisons should be treated with caution.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (“Hardware/Industry (Geha)”) thread “Honestly, TGS has really gone downhill, hasn’t it…“

  • Joy and Heartbreak at the All Comers: 5ch Thread — “I Let Out a Scream”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Newsspeed VIP” board featuring “Mr. Chudoon,” an ASCII-art (AA) character beloved among horse racing fans. The thread live-blogged the day of the All Comers race — one poster celebrated nailing an exacta bet, while another, who’d hedged with a long-shot pick only to watch it factor into the finish instead of their favorite, lamented, “I let out a scream I’ve never made before.” When someone reported spotting a snake along the way, another replied, “That’s good luck.” Photos of an approaching typhoon and a chat about grape varieties kept the thread’s usual freewheeling banter going.

    Background and Talking Points

“Mr. Chudoon,” who appears throughout the thread, is an ASCII-art (AA) character long beloved on 5ch’s “Newsspeed VIP” board, known for posting live commentary and bragging about betting slips on race days. The All Comers discussed here is a Grade 2 race held at Nakayama Racecourse, drawing attention each year as a tune-up ahead of the fall Grade 1 season. The “exacta” (umatan) mentioned in the posts is a bet requiring the top two finishers in exact order, which pays out well when it hits. The “scream” in post #31 appears to reflect a mix of shock and frustration after the poster’s favored combination missed while the horse they’d bought as a just-in-case pick ended up factoring into the result. As for the idea that spotting a snake brings good luck, that comes from folk belief holding snakes to be messengers of Benzaiten, a goddess of fortune — it has no scientific basis. It’s worth remembering these are all personal anecdotes posted to an anonymous message board, not independently verified facts.

  • “I Thought They Were a Pro Voice Actor”—5ch Keeps Naming Celebrities Who Nailed Anime Dubbing

After magmix ran an article spotlighting four anime films — including “Shiranui” — where actors who aren’t primarily voice actors turned in “amazing” performances, users on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board chimed in with “there are more,” rattling off title after title where celebrity casting had earned high marks. Masato Sakai in Yukikaze, Yu Aoi in Tekkonkinkreet, Takako Matsu in Brave Story, and Tomoya Nagase in Sword of the Stranger were named as prime examples of being “unambiguously good,” though some pointed to cases like Princess Knight where the casting backfired, and others argued that what separates “good” from “bad” has more to do with recording and directing technique than the individual actor’s skill.

    2026.09.21

Casting “non-professional voice actors” in anime or dubbed foreign films often draws harsh criticism, but there are no shortage of cases where the performance is flawless, or where the actor delivers a great fit for the work’s tone and character. Let’s look back at four anime films where a non-professional voice actor was, honestly, wonderful.

    Re: #106
His voice type seems well-suited for it too.

    Background and Key Points

Casting actors who aren’t primarily voice actors in anime tends to draw criticism as “stunt casting for buzz,” but in practice quite a few stage-trained actors turn out to be skilled at line delivery. Figures like Toru Emori and Shuichi Ikeda came up through stage or child-acting backgrounds close to voice work to begin with, so the simple equation “celebrity casting = bad performance” doesn’t really hold. Some in the thread argued that the reason certain casting choices “didn’t blow up” is simply that they never got enough attention to blow up in the first place — a wry observation that lower-grossing films tend to escape scrutiny. Others pointed out that what separates a good performance from a bad one isn’t just the actor’s individual skill, but also recording methods, mic technique, and the sound director’s craft — worth keeping in mind that it’s not simply a matter of “professional voice actor or not.”

  • Kazushige Nagashima’s Bear-Countermeasure Idea Draws Backlash — 5ch: “Every Hunter Already Says This”

On Nippon TV’s “Kazushige & Soshina’s Super Wide Show” (aired September 20), Kazushige Nagashima proposed tackling bear damage by culling wild boar, arguing that boars eat up bears’ food before the bears can get to it. The show also covered a Japanese black bear sighting on Mt. Takao and the emergency firearm hunt authorized by local officials in Maizuru, Kyoto. On 5ch, the show’s framing of the idea as something “no one has ever said before” drew heavy pushback — users pointed out that hunters and researchers have already been discussing this, while others argued the real drivers of increased bear sightings lie elsewhere, splitting opinion over how solid the proposal’s basis really is.

    9/21 (Mon) 4:16 PM

Kazushige Nagashima (60), a former pro baseball player turned TV personality, appeared on Nippon TV’s “Kazushige & Soshina’s Super (Wide) Show” (Sundays 11 p.m.), which aired on the 20th. He put forward a concrete proposal for dealing with bear damage.

The show is a variety program in wide-show format. Nippon TV announcer Rina Sato (31) reported on the Japanese black bear sighting on Mt. Takao in Tokyo, as well as the appearance of what looked like a mother bear and cub in Maizuru, Kyoto, where local officials authorized an emergency firearm hunt allowing shooting at their discretion. She noted that the response had drawn more than 200 public comments.

Wild boar aren't bears' natural predator. If anything, boars are the ones getting eaten — Tohoku had bear incidents even back when there were barely any boars there.
"They eat first because their mouths are closer to the ground" is just an armchair observation; the real drivers of the sightings are poor beech-nut harvests, a growing bear population, and abandoned fruit orchards.
"Cull the boar" has already been floated as national policy. "No one has ever said this" is the biggest lie in the whole segment.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Bear sightings in populated areas have piled up this year across places like Mt. Takao in Tokyo and Maizuru, Kyoto. “Emergency firearm hunting,” which lets local governments authorize gun use at their own discretion, is a mechanism newly created under the 2023 revision of Japan’s Wildlife Protection and Management Law. The theory floated on the show — that boars, with mouths closer to the ground, eat bears’ food first — was treated on the thread as a hard-to-verify anecdotal claim, with users noting it’s a separate issue from the causes experts actually cite for the rise in sightings (poor harvests of beech and other nuts, a growing bear population, and neglected fruit orchards and food waste). Many also pushed back on the framing itself — “no one has ever said this” — as an exaggeration, pointing out that hunters and researchers have long discussed the need to manage rising boar and deer populations. The thread also flagged a common misunderstanding around the term “natural predator”: boars aren’t actually predators of bears, but competitors for the same food.

  • Birthday’s AI-Generated Ad Sparks Controversy Over ‘Identical-Looking Models’

When Birthday, a baby and kids’ clothing brand under the Shimamura group, used AI-generated models in an ad, it became a hot topic on 5channel after users noticed that several of the models’ faces looked strikingly similar. ENCOUNT reached out to the company’s head office, which explained its reasoning for using generative AI. Some in the thread criticized the move as a lazy shortcut to avoid varying the same face, while others countered that expecting more from a bargain kids’-clothing flyer was asking too much. The discussion expanded to cover why AI faces look unnatural (many pointed to their overly symmetrical, too-perfect features), debates over copyright and portrait rights, and worries that jobs for actors and models could disappear.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Generative-AI ad production is spreading in the apparel industry because it cuts down on photoshoot and labor costs. Birthday is a baby and kids’ clothing brand under the Shimamura group, centered on relatively low-priced items. Opinions split in the thread over whether the similar-looking model faces reflected “cutting corners” or whether expecting more from a flyer for cheap goods was simply unreasonable. It’s also worth noting that since AI-generated faces aren’t photographs of any specific real person, they don’t automatically amount to copyright or portrait-rights infringement — a point some replies got wrong, making it premature to brand the practice “illegal” without hearing the company’s explanation. Beyond this particular ad, concerns also surfaced, in a broader context, that AI could replace work for extras and lower-profile actors and models.

I had a faint hope the Johnny Kitagawa scandal would sweep Johnny's talents off TV entirely, but even counting the ones who've since left the agency, their airtime has only gone up compared to before.

    Re: #3
Sick of it — even the commercials are wall-to-wall Johnny's talent.
    4AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:43
If it's not even one representative school per prefecture, no point watching.
    5AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:44
    Re: #1
Just chant 'soiya soiya soiya' and then hit them with a ( ゚д゚)ハッ! (a startled-gasp emoticon) — clear it on vibes alone, I guess?
    6AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:44
Even the high school quiz show has been taken over by Johnny's now.
    81AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:01
    Re: #6
Not long ago it was taken over by [producer] Akimoto instead — there was even a round where it felt like success hinged on whether Nogizaka46 did well, not the actual contestants.
    7AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:45
So the 'face-punch group' (a mocking nickname for a certain boy band) isn't even involved this time? Lame.
    10AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:46
Honestly the best way to treat regular contestants is the Takeshi's Castle approach.
    11AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:47
Good thing it's not Timelesz this time.
    12AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:47
Wonder which one of these kids turns into a 'suspect' down the road… (゚A゚;)ゴクリ (gulp)
    13AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:48
Remember that stretch when they went all-in on pure brainpower and the number of participating schools cratered?
    16AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:51
Might as well just rename it the Johnny's Quiz Championship.
    17AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:51
Number of schools has really dropped. Guess they don't do the running-around-town or getting-covered-in-mud stuff anymore, huh?
    18AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:53
It's no fun unless it's 'wits, strength, and a bit of luck.'
    21AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:56
I guess technical college (kosen) students are only eligible through their 3rd year?
    29AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:01
    Re: #21
Do kosen students even compete in the high school baseball tournament?
    23AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:57
Why does this completely overlap with Quiz Sama!!?
    82AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:01
    Re: #23
Because it got bumped from its Friday slot, then bumped from Tuesday too.
    25AnonymousSep 21, 2026 18:59
One industrial/technical high school really stands out here.
    33AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:04
    Re: #25
It's a technical kosen (college of technology) — the kind that competes in robot contests.

I panicked for a second too, thinking 'wait, Niihama Technical?'
    32AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:03
No Saitama schools at all, huh.
    35AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:07
    Re: #32
Forget just Saitama — zero schools from northern Kanto, period.
    37AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:09
    Re: #32
They lost in the qualifying round before the nationals — Omiya, Sakae Higashi, and Waseda Honjo all got knocked out.

Why is Nippon TV so cozy with Johnny's?
    47AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:17
    Re: #46
Because the fangirls actually support the sponsors — the male fans get completely ignored, though.
    52AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:22
Small field to begin with, and outside of the Ehime, Hiroshima, and Chiba schools plus Shuei, it's basically all elite schools. Shuei took runner-up or something last year, right?
    54AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:24
    Re: #52
Even Saitama schools like Urawa, Kasukabe, and Keio Shiki couldn't make the cut.
    56AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:27
Johnny's talent isn't going to land with this crowd. They just want to get on with the quiz — throwing in singing and dancing is only going to kill the mood.
    58AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:27
    Re: #56
It works because it lands with the sponsors — the contestants couldn't care less.
    63AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:32
Aren't they running qualifiers? Honestly, the fun part is the chaotic mix of everyone from geniuses to total dunces all thrown together.
    64AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:33
    Re: #63
Like when an elite school trips over some garbage question and falls in the qualifiers.
    67AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:34
What is this, middle-school-level questions like Quiz Sama!! lol
    75AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:51
    Re: #67
They've been trial-and-erroring it every year — went hardcore-difficult at one point, turned into basically a craft-project contest at another, and lately it's settled into a middle-school-level quiz show.
    77AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:55
Chiba's Shibumaku (Shibuya Kyoiku Gakuen Makuhari) and Shuei sit right next to each other, on the side of Kaihin-Makuhari Station opposite Makuhari Messe and the Marine Stadium.
    79AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:58
Have they stopped asking questions that are basically just flexing your exam-prep stats? It was rough back when I last watched.
    85AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:08
    Re: #79
Ratings were actually good back then — the next year they dropped that approach and it completely bombed.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“The National High School Quiz Championship” is a long-running show that began in 1983. It once made its name with physical obstacle-course races and outdoor challenges, but in recent years has shifted toward knowledge-focused questions, with the number of participating schools cut back significantly — a change the thread references directly, noting that “the running-around-town segments are gone” and it’s “become middle-school level.” The absence of Saitama schools stems from the fact that heavyweight contenders like Omiya, Sakae Higashi, and Waseda Honjo were eliminated in the qualifying round before the national finals; since the competition isn’t a one-representative-per-prefecture format, regions with a cluster of strong schools can end up shut out entirely. Comments about the relationship between sponsors/the network and the Johnny’s agency (including SixTONES) are general remarks about the show’s production choices, not attacks on any individual — that distinction is worth keeping in mind. The alumni listed for each school are drawn from publicly available biographical information, not definitive claims made within the thread.
