  • Is the Rise of Non-Regular Employment Just ‘Self-Responsibility’? 5ch: ‘I Could Only Save 3,000 Yen’

Many people who entered the workforce during Japan’s “employment ice age” after the bubble economy collapsed are still stuck in unstable, non-regular jobs today. On ABEMA Prime, a debate erupted over how deregulation—including revisions to the Worker Dispatch Law—fueled the rise of non-regular employment, with some arguing “government policy at the time expanded it” while others pinned the blame on individual “self-responsibility.” On a 5ch thread, voices from that generation (“Back then, becoming a civil servant was the only way out”) sat alongside accounts like “I’m from the same ice age generation, but I worked at a black company and could only save 3,000 yen,” highlighting the gap between lived experience and calls for self-responsibility.

    ABEMA TIMES

Many of those who entered society during the employment ice age after the bubble burst remain stuck in unstable non-regular employment today. Amid revisions to the Worker Dispatch Law and other changes that expanded the ranks of non-regular workers, sharp voices have clashed—some arguing “government policy at the time expanded non-regular employment,” others leveling harsh “self-responsibility” criticism at the workers themselves. ABEMA Prime held a discussion on the roots of this problem, where responsibility lies, and what support should look like going forward.

Even with this weak yen, apparently workers from the bottom rung in Indonesia can make 7x more by coming to Kagoshima.

Well, for people actually working properly in the big cities, they've probably already been overtaken almost across the board though.

…says some unemployed guy with zero work history who just inherited a massive fortune and land from his parents. When a guy like that hits you with "self-responsibility" — like "if you're jealous, why didn't you just make the effort to live off unearned income?" — it makes me want to kill someone.

Normally the sensible move would've been to lay off the high-paid employees who weren't producing results and hire young people instead — cheaper and with more upside potential. But the age group that would've been targeted for layoffs back then was the generation with a track record of raising hell in the student movements. Make an enemy of them carelessly and you'd be at a disadvantage come election time. Even in an era with no internet like today, those guys were still networked together.

These days, with the labor shortage, it's: "Oh! You've got the license?! We've been waiting for you! You'll be fine just picking it up as you go!" — and you get hired on the spot.

By the time the ice age generation hit middle age, almost all of them became regular employees. Bringing up "non-regular ice age generation" at this point is off the mark. Even if you become a regular employee by the time you're middle-aged, you can't exactly start a family by then.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Worker Dispatch Law was revised in 1999, lifting restrictions to allow dispatch labor across most job categories in principle, and in 2004 dispatch work was further deregulated to include manufacturing. The employment ice age (roughly those who graduated between 1993 and 2004) overlapped with this period of deregulation, meaning the generation left out of the traditional new-graduate hiring track was especially likely to end up funneled into non-regular employment. Since around 2019, the government has pushed an “Ice Age Generation Support Program,” but its track record of converting workers to regular employment is considered limited. In the thread, criticism of Heizo Takenaka — who spearheaded the deregulation — clashes with “self-responsibility” arguments that focus on individual choices, making this an issue that doesn’t reduce neatly to simple right and wrong. One commonly misunderstood point: not everyone from the ice age generation remained non-regular — many did eventually move into regular employment as they aged — but the segment that reaches retirement age still non-regular faces a real looming problem of inadequate pensions and retirement savings, which remains an unresolved social security challenge.

It's crazy that Middle Eastern clubs get away with throwing around absurd amounts of money to sign players, but for some reason only Europe is bound by this thing called FFP. Even within Europe, how strictly it's enforced varies a lot.
Manchester City is getting slammed hard over their financial misconduct case, but PSG and Middle Eastern clubs not too long ago were running massive deficits in violation of FFP on a scale way beyond anything City did. Why is the Premier League so diligently trying to enforce this garbage rule called FFP?
If you're going to restrict clubs with FFP, you need to do it worldwide, otherwise all the good players are just going to get scooped up by the Middle East.

It's easy for outsiders to say he lacks ambition, but if you were actually offered this kind of insane money, turning it down would be tough. That said, unpaid wages are basically par for the course, and there's the risk of being right in the middle of a war zone too, so it's probably not an environment where you can really focus on soccer.

And yet, despite overcoming all these hardships, they've gone back to their Brazilian-player pipeline and are getting results again.
The treatment there is probably pretty good too.

    Background and Talking Points

Criticism of transfers as being “just for the money” is a recurring debate in soccer in recent years. It’s ironic that Manchester City itself, the club Reijnders is leaving, is currently being pursued by the Premier League over alleged financial rule violations — that context is behind the thread’s comparisons between Europe’s FFP (Financial Fair Play) regulations and the financial muscle of Middle Eastern clubs. Oil-producing Middle Eastern nations like Saudi Arabia also run high-welfare policies such as free healthcare and education, which is part of why domestic criticism over the source of transfer funds doesn’t tend to build up as much there. Meanwhile, the thread also drifted into tangents not directly related to the main topic, such as comparisons to Shohei Ohtani’s reasons for his own transfer. Whether Reijnders was a regular starter or a backup at City is merely speculation from some posters and hasn’t been confirmed, so it isn’t reflected in this article’s summary.

The real issue is celebrities who aren't even big-eaters taking on mega-portion menus and doing the whole "I'm so full it hurts" act — guys like Egashira do that too.
    85AnonymousSep 23, 2026 17:49
So should we just report every big-eating video one by one? Tani Yan should be fine though, since he's actually cooking.

The call is that it's a bad influence on minors. And honestly, it wouldn't be surprising if some kid watched a big-eating channel, thought "me too, me too," tried forcing down school-lunch bread, and choked to death.

    Re: #103
Yeah, and Hiroyuki's channel hasn't been banned either.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The core sticking point was that nobody could pin down exactly where the line for “binge eating” gets drawn. Commenters floated workaround after workaround — editing out shots of the food’s sheer volume, or simply avoiding the phrase “eating challenge” — while the thread never quite settled on whether TV personalities known for competitive eating, or videos of celebrities taking on giant-portion menu items, would also fall under the new rule. One piece of background raised was a past incident in which a junior-high student died after choking on school-lunch bread during the height of the big-eating boom, suggesting the new restriction is rooted in concern over health risks. At the same time, several posters argued that other genres — like “nuisance YouTubers” — ought to be a higher priority for regulation, reflecting some frustration with how consistent the platform’s standards really are.

  • Giants Rally Past Carp — Takemaru Wins His 11th, Keeps Gap to Hanshin at 1.5 Games

In the Giants-Carp game at Mazda Stadium on September 23, Takemaru held Hiroshima to one earned run over 5 2/3 innings for his 11th win, and the bullpen held on as the Giants came from behind to win 2-1. For Hiroshima, it was a night of one mishap after another — Tokoda took the loss despite allowing zero earned runs. The Giants enter their final 7 games still 1.5 games behind first-place Hanshin, but the thread’s mood was mixed, with some fans shrugging that a win doesn’t even matter, since it was already over yesterday, reflecting cooled enthusiasm for the pennant race. Midway through the game, discussion shifted to the defense of Hiroshima’s starting catcher Mochimaru, sparking a broader debate about the team’s catcher problems.

And here I thought he'd already been confirmed to stay on.

    Background and Talking Points

As of September 23, the Giants sit in 2nd place, 1.5 games behind first-place Hanshin, heading into a tense final stretch of 7 games. In this game against Hiroshima, Takemaru picked up his 11th win, but the Giants had zero RBIs — the win came purely from 2 runs that scored off Hiroshima errors and a fielder’s choice. The thread showed a mix of resignation, with some saying it was already over yesterday, and others still holding out hope, reflecting the uneven mood around the pennant race. Separately from the game itself, discussion kept circling back to how Hiroshima’s former starting catcher Sakakura was pulled from behind the plate after being diagnosed with the yips off a .000 caught-stealing rate, and to Mochimaru’s shaky defense — pointing to a chronic catcher problem within the Carp organization that goes beyond the result of any single game.

  • Taiwan-Based YouTuber’s ‘Street Food Sucks’ Remark Sparks Backlash — Even Local Media Picks It Up

A Japanese YouTuber based in Taiwan, “Zoro’s Taiwan Gourmet” (140,000 subscribers), sparked widespread criticism after calling street food “f***ing awful” in a video, and the controversy grew large enough that local Taiwanese media picked up the story. The YouTuber has lived in Taiwan since 2019 and also runs a dessert shop in Taipei. On 5ch, discussion ranged across whether the remark was fair, how the flavor of star anise shapes the taste of street food, and comparisons with other travel YouTubers who panned foreign cuisine in the past without ever facing backlash.

    9/23 (Wed) 11:00

Taiwan enjoys friendly relations with Japan and draws large numbers of Japanese tourists. Social media and YouTube are flooded with content on Taiwan’s sightseeing spots and food destinations — but a video posted by a popular YouTuber living in the country has now snowballed into a full-blown “flame war” controversy that has drawn in local media.

The YouTuber in question is “Zoro’s Taiwan Gourmet,” who has 140,000 subscribers. According to a 2022 interview published by the web outlet NNA Campasar Web Magazine, Zoro has lived in Taiwan since 2019 and also runs a dessert shop in Taipei.

If you can't handle the taste of star anise, I don't think anything there is going to work for you.
To varying degrees, pretty much all Taiwanese food has star anise in it.

    Background and Points of Debate

Taiwan is often portrayed in Japan as a pro-Japan country, so it’s rare for a resident’s remarks to get picked up by local media at all. Street food stalls aren’t necessarily chasing high ratings, given the constraints of ingredient cost and location, and posters in the thread pointed out that “Taiwanese food is shaped by the flavor of star anise” — the possibility that likes and dislikes here come down to differences in cultural familiarity tends to get overlooked. The thread also raised the example of another travel YouTuber with a similar subscriber count who harshly criticized foreign cuisine without ever facing backlash, and opinion was split on why this case alone became a controversy. The fact that the poster himself runs a food-related shop in Taipei may also have shaped how the remark was received.

    Must hurt getting that done

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In Japan, tattoos have long been associated with Edo-period criminal punishment and, later, with the image of the yakuza, and that association is still the basis for being turned away from public baths, hot springs, and pools. In recent years, however, growing overseas cultural influence and a rise in influencers have led more young people to view tattoos simply as decoration, and this thread’s generational temperature gap became the main line of conflict. The focus isn’t “whether getting a tattoo is right or wrong” but rather “how much should be tolerated in public spaces,” and there’s hardly any criticism directed at TAKAHIRO personally. Worth noting too, as pointed out within the thread itself, is that articles like this one follow a familiar formula of cherry-picking both pro and con comments to build a headline — and that very technique also drew criticism from posters in the thread.

  • Ito Momoka “Cutest Idol” Debate: AKB48 vs. Hello! Project Compared

A thread claiming AKB48’s Ito Momoka might be “the cutest idol in the industry right now” popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board (the “Ookami” board) and drew a wave of responses. Some posters pushed back, arguing she’s only popular because she’s in AKB48 and wouldn’t get this much attention in a Sakamichi group (the Nogizaka46/Sakurazaka46/Hinatazaka46 family of idol groups), while others compared her looks to Juice=Juice members and past fan favorites using photos. The thread also brought up the story that the wish Ito wrote on a daruma doll was “I hope AKB48 gets to perform at Tokyo Dome,” and the discussion spread into casual chatter involving fans outside the AKB fanbase.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This thread was started on a Hello! Project-focused board (commonly known as the “Ookami” board) that discusses AKB48 member popularity — as the thread itself notes, this reflects the fact that AKB48’s own board has gone fairly quiet, with even things like underground sales discussions losing steam there. As a result, AKB-related topics often end up spilling over into boards where fans of other groups gather. The thread’s main point of disagreement was whether the praise for Ito Momoka comes down to her actual looks or simply to AKB48’s name recognition and group affiliation, with some arguing she wouldn’t get the same treatment in a Sakamichi group. The comparisons drawn with Satoyoshi and Juice=Juice members are also a recurring pattern in 5ch idol debates — how closely looks-based evaluations track with how much exposure and work a group’s members actually get. It’s worth noting that none of this is backed by concrete popularity figures or official agency statements; it’s all subjective opinion from individual posters.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Ito Momoka-chan is seriously the cutest in the idol world right now, isn’t she.”

  • Are Switch 2’s rear buttons just in the way? 5ch: ‘I fat-fingered it and out popped Mantarow’

This thread kicked off with a post claiming “the Switch 2 controller has rear buttons that get pressed by accident when you grip it.” Many users pushed back, pointing out that the rear buttons (GL/GR) aren’t assigned to anything by default, so accidental presses shouldn’t happen — but others who’d actually set up custom mappings for them said the buttons sit right where your hand grips the controller, making misclicks easy. The thread also touched on how the official Pro Controller 2’s trigger-stop feature works, the retractable rear-button mechanisms on third-party pads like GameSir and 8BitDo, and similarities to the Xbox controller’s button layout.

    1AnonymousSep 23, 2026 14:08
If you actually grip the controller firmly, you end up pressing it by accident — doesn't that mean you have to play while constantly being careful?

Now that you mention it, the bundled grip doesn't have rear buttons
If you're planning to keep using Joy-Cons, you should get the official charging grip — it's cheap, has rear buttons, and means you don't have to keep plugging the controller in to charge
Though if you only ever play in handheld mode, you don't need any of this anyway
    38AnonymousSep 23, 2026 14:51
Saying it's 'basically got trigger-stop' when it's not even an analog trigger to begin with
is like saying an EV has idling-stop!!

    Re: #38
Ah, so you really didn't know how it works
    57AnonymousSep 23, 2026 15:30
I hate clicking the stick in, so I use the rear buttons instead, but the rear position itself is just naturally prone to misclicks
I haven't really misclicked much since switching to the Pro Controller 2, but I mashed the wrong buttons so often on other controllers that I almost became an anti-rear-button guy lol
Still, when I'm playing Raiders and panic, I've hit the rear button by mistake a few times and Mantarow popped out (the character that button summons), so I guess having it right where you grip really isn't ideal after all
Can't they just add more buttons near ABXY instead?

Besides, GL/GR won't respond at all unless you've configured them
Since they're talking about a 'third-party Pro Con' with a confirm-button mapping, I'm guessing they mean one of those Chinese-made pads

Background and key points of this discussion

The Switch 2’s Pro Controller 2 and similar pads have rear buttons (GL/GR) that Joy-Cons lack, but out of the box nothing is assigned to them. So in the first half of the thread, posts claiming “gripping it causes misfires” were repeatedly met with pushback like “by default it shouldn’t respond at all” — but people who had actually mapped inputs to GL/GR shared firsthand accounts of pressing them unintentionally, since the buttons sit right where the hand naturally grips the controller, so this isn’t simply a case of someone being mistaken. The trigger-stop feature that came up is a mechanism, standard on the Pro Controller 2, that physically halts the L/R triggers partway through their pull and switches the input from analog to a digital microswitch signal. The thread also touched on mismatched perceptions around controller terminology and standards — for instance, how the name “Pro Con” has come to be used well beyond Nintendo’s own official product, and how the original Pro Controller’s stick layout was historically close to PlayStation’s. The retractable rear-button mechanisms on third-party pads like GameSir and 8BitDo were also raised as one example of a workaround for accidental presses.

  • Former Japan International Yu Kobayashi Announces Retirement — Wife ‘Cried for Over a Week’ After Hearing the News

Kawasaki Frontale’s Yu Kobayashi (39) announced on September 23 that he will retire from active play as of January 1 next year. The veteran, who has played for the club exclusively for 17 years since joining in 2010, scheduled his press conference for 11:00 a.m. — matching both his own birthday and his squad number — and explained his decision by saying, “I could no longer fully believe in myself.” When he told his family about the retirement, his wife reportedly broke down crying and “cried for more than a week.” On 5channel threads, comments like “Who?” and “Seriously, nobody has any idea who this guy is” poured in regarding his name recognition, while other posts recounted the story of the wife who supported him through his battle with illness since his university days, and some reminisced about how tough rivals Yuya Osako and Shinji Okazaki made it hard for him to break into the national team.

Yu Kobayashi (39), a forward for J1 club Kawasaki Frontale and a former Japan national team member, held a press conference in Kawasaki City on the 23rd and announced that he will retire from active play as of January 1 next year.

The veteran, now in his 17th year with the club he joined exclusively back in 2010, scheduled the press conference for 11:00 a.m. on his 39th birthday, matching his uniform number 11. He revealed in his own words his intention to hang up his boots.

“I could no longer fully believe in myself. I could no longer fully believe in myself. I often played on emotion, so I decided that if I couldn’t do that anymore, I should step down as a player,” he confessed as his reason for deciding to retire.

I wonder if being a J-Leaguer's wife was a comfortable position for her?
Maybe 30 years ago, but being a J-League player's wife these days isn't really that big a status symbol, I'd think
Being the wife of an active national team player, sure, that'd still carry some status

Kengo Nakamura will probably become a manager someday, but what about Yu?
If he's a smooth talker doing commentary, maybe that path's open to him too?

We don't even know if Nakamura will be any good as a manager, so there's a chance for Kobayashi too — though we don't know if he'd be any good either

She's been supporting Kobayashi's soccer career since their university days, so it's probably sad for her to see that come to an end

This generation grew up admiring the glamorous early days of the J-League as kids, but once they actually joined, it had turned into such a tax-subsidy-dependent world that they must have been let down

It's been dependent on tax money since the early days, that hasn't changed

Because of this guy, former TBS announcer Yu Kobayashi had to change her name to Haruka Anne
    86AnonymousSep 23, 2026 16:33
Oh, so it's not about this Yu Kobayashi

Background and key points of this discussion

Yu Kobayashi joined Kawasaki Frontale in 2010 and has played for the club exclusively ever since, without ever transferring elsewhere. He was called up to the Japan national team at various points, but with proven forwards like Yuya Osako and Shinji Okazaki ahead of him, he was never able to lock down a regular spot. This retirement press conference was deliberately scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to mark both his birthday and his uniform number 11, a touch that reflected his own personal attention to detail. Reactions in the thread were split mainly over the question of his “name recognition” — many posts pointed out the reality that even a player who spent 17 years excelling for a single J-League club can remain largely unknown to the general public. On the other hand, once the story of his wife — who supported him through his battle with illness back in his university days — was introduced, some comments responded warmly to the story of her tears. There were also some cynical remarks about the J-League’s reliance on tax subsidies, with the discussion around one player’s retirement broadening into a wider debate about the environment surrounding the J-League as a whole.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5channel (Entertainment/Sports Express+) thread “[Soccer] Former Japan international Kawasaki F’s Yu Kobayashi: “The day was bound to come…” — When he told his family about his retirement… his wife burst into tears, “She cried for more than a week”“.

  • ANGERME’s Hana Goto Arrives First by Taxi on Manager’s Orders — Gets Blasted by Senior Member; 5ch: ‘Hana Did Nothing Wrong’

ANGERME’s Hana Goto took a taxi on her manager’s instructions and arrived at a convenience store ahead of the others. When Hashisako and Tamenaga, who had walked there, arrived afterward, Hashisako was upset that Goto had gotten there first, and a minor confrontation broke out on the spot — an episode that became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Goto had thoughtfully sent a photo of matcha jelly, but some believe Hashisako took it as bragging. On the thread, the overwhelming consensus was that “Goto did nothing wrong,” and posters also debated the distinctive nature of relationships within Hello! Project groups.

Classic case of being driven crazy precisely because you're sane
For Hana it's more like she's just too kind-hearted
    4AnonymousSep 23, 2026 16:17
    Is this it?

Hana Goto-chan took a taxi on the manager's orders and got to the convenience store first
Hashisako and Tamenaga headed over on foot
Hana-chan thoughtfully sent a photo of matcha jelly, but Hashisako got upset — 'why is she there first?'
The moment Hashisako and the others got to the store, a fight broke out over her arriving ahead of them
Tamenaga said she was just joking, but Hana-chan's reaction showed it clearly wasn't a joke to her
Tamenaga: 'Hashisako-san didn't apologize one bit'
Hashisako: '(Goto) kept making excuses right next to me the whole time'
When Kamiko heard that Tamenaga had gone to apologize in Hana-chan's hotel room, she said, 'Hana, you go too!'

Isn't this seriously unreasonable toward Hana-chan?
    She didn't do a single thing wrong…
She still seemed upset about it even during the broadcast
    5AnonymousSep 23, 2026 16:19

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This exchange comes from members themselves looking back on the incident during a broadcast or similar, as relayed through social media and summary sites — it cannot be verified against the actual broadcast or an official statement as primary source material. The core issue boils down to how you interpret the matcha jelly photo Hana Goto sent: as a thoughtful gesture, or as bragging about arriving first. Reactions to the same event were sharply divided on the thread — opinions defending Goto were dominant, though some posters also expressed understanding for Hashisako’s reaction. Much of the discussion also proceeds from the premise that “Hello! Project groups have members with strong personalities,” but it’s worth noting this is just an impression among fans, not a substantiated fact.
