  • Moriyasu’s Japan Falls 1-3 to Uruguay — 5ch Split Over His Tactical Decisions

On September 24, a friendly match between Japan and Uruguay was held at Q&A Stadium Miyagi. Japan took an early lead in the 12th minute through Matsuki Kuryu, playing his first-ever match for the senior national team, but Uruguay’s Maxi Araújo equalized in the 42nd minute, and the first half ended 1-1. In the 5ch thread, some discounted the result, noting that Uruguay were missing Suárez and Forlán and that key players arrived tired after their trip to Japan was delayed by a typhoon, calling it “not much to go on” — while others saw real promise, writing that “the individual quality of the Japan squad is improving.” Opinions were split.

“Our goal came from the opponent’s mistake.”

The Japan national team, led by manager Moriyasu Hajime, faced Uruguay on September 24 in an international friendly at Q&A Stadium Miyagi.

In their first match since the North/Central America World Cup, Japan took the lead in the 12th minute. Matsuki Kuryu, making his senior debut in this very match, buried a brilliant strike from distance. Japan continued to control the game afterward, but before they could add a second goal, they conceded in the 42nd minute — goalkeeper Hayakawa Tomoki managed to block the first shot with his foot, but the rebound was tapped home by Maxi Araújo. The first half ended 1-1.

    Re: #7

True, it's a friendly, so it's not a true measure of ability, and you shouldn't take it at face value (even back in the Kamo-Japan era, Japan beat some fairly strong countries in friendlies).

That said, friendlies still count toward the FIFA rankings (which ultimately affects World Cup seeding), so there's still a reason to keep winning.

Still, don't take it at face value, and be careful not to read too much into it.

The individual level of Japan's national team players has gotten really high. Young, talented players keep emerging one after another. There's bound to be some payback.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Because friendly match results feed into FIFA ranking points — which in turn affect World Cup qualifying seeding — some in the thread argued that “even a friendly shouldn’t be brushed off.” At the same time, posts repeatedly pointed out that Uruguay’s arrival in Japan was delayed by an approaching typhoon and that their lineup was missing regular veterans like Suárez, with some also noting that Uruguay’s Bielsa-led setup fell apart at the actual North/Central America World Cup — leading to a cautious view that Japan’s true ability shouldn’t be judged on this result alone. Others, meanwhile, spoke positively about “individual players stepping up their level,” so reactions to the result split between optimism and caution. There was also back-and-forth over individual performances by players like Matsuki and Isogai, with some posts harshly critiquing their play outside of the goal-scoring moments and others defending them.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisports Sokuho+) thread “‘It’s an era where we can’t beat Japan,’ ‘Are they scared?’ Moriyasu’s Japan loses 1-3… Uruguay fans furious! ‘Nothing’s improved since the World Cup’.”

  • Japan vs. Uruguay: Sano Brothers Start Together — 5ch: ‘Keito Nakamura Owns the Left Wing, Who Needs Mitoma?’

A 5ch thread live-reacting to Japan’s national team clash with Uruguay in the Kirin Challenge Cup blew up with activity. Right from kickoff, fans were stunned to see the Sano brothers both named in the starting lineup, and the thread kept rolling with takes on individual players — from Kyusei Matsuki cementing his spot on the senior national team to Keito Nakamura’s strong form stirring up a ranking battle with Kaoru Mitoma. Late in the match, a debate broke out over how to interpret an offside call involving a handball, with one early (wrong) conclusion getting checked and corrected via AI. Comments also reflected on just how strong Uruguay looked, alongside hopes for what’s ahead under the new Oiwa-led coaching staff.

Offside rules keep getting tweaked here and there, so it gets confusing.

Background and key points of this discussion

The Kirin Challenge Cup is a series of international friendlies hosted by the Japan Football Association, usually organized to strengthen the national team and scout new talent. In this thread, attention centered on the battle for starting spots, sparked by the Sano brothers being fielded together and Keito Nakamura’s rise. Where the thread split was over a refereeing interpretation: posters initially reached the wrong conclusion about whether a play involving hand contact should be ruled offside, then checked it with AI and corrected themselves. Under the actual Laws of the Game, offside is assessed only on body parts that can legally play the ball — hands and arms don’t count — so that correction was accurate. One thing worth flagging for readers: fielding a new player for the national team doesn’t automatically mean he’s locked in for future matches; friendlies are ultimately a proving ground, and a thread’s excitement is no guarantee of an actual starting role.

  • Japan’s Table Tennis Team Stuns China for Gold — 5ch: ‘They Finally Broke Through China’s Fortress’

A 5ch thread lit up after Japan’s national table tennis team beat China to win gold. Posters lined up to praise the growth of players like Tomokazu Harimoto and Kira Matsushima, and after a direct win over world No. 1 Wang Chuqin, some declared, “They’ve finally broken through China’s fortress.” Others argued China’s players weren’t at full strength, or pointed out that the men’s roster depth seems to be thinning, leaving opinion split on whether this is a genuine generational shift or just a temporary slump for China. For the upcoming women’s match, many predicted a tough wall in world No. 1 Sun Yingsha.

Wait, there's a Japanese player ranked above Harimoto?

    Background and Points of Debate

Table tennis has long been a sport where China sits at the top of the world, and it’s historically been rare for Japan to beat them in international play. The “first time in 60 years” figure repeated throughout the thread comes from posters’ own recollections and isn’t clearly backed by official records, so it’s worth taking with a grain of salt. Opinion was split on whether Japan had genuinely closed the skill gap or whether China simply hadn’t fielded its strongest lineup, with both views appearing side by side in the thread. It’s also worth noting that some Japanese national team players have roots in China, but eligibility to represent a country is based on nationality — so questioning the win’s legitimacy based on a player’s background alone doesn’t reflect the actual rules. As for the upcoming women’s match, the general consensus was that it’s a tall order given the presence of top-ranked Sun Yingsha.

  • New Fire Emblem Scores 2.9 on Japan’s Amazon — US and UK Rate It Above 4

The Japanese Amazon reviews for the latest entry in the “Fire Emblem” series have stalled at just 2.9 stars, while the US listing sits at 4.5, the UK listing at 4.1, and Metacritic’s user score stands at 8.9 (89 points) — a stark mismatch across countries and rating platforms that’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board. Thread posters split between two theories: that longtime fans are handing out harsh scores out of frustration with the series’ new direction, or that the low ratings reflect a deliberate review-bombing campaign. Commenters also pointed to the “Xenoblade” series, which reportedly saw a similar pile-up of negative reviews in the past.

Re: #21 But wouldn't those people be the core buyer base? If they ignored that and put out something totally different, then a low score is a low score, fair's fair. It's like an enka singer suddenly busting out rap — of course that's getting rated low.
    30AnonymousSep 24, 2026 20:35

    Background and Points of Debate

Amazon lets anyone post a review whether or not their purchase is verified, so right after launch a handful of low or high scores can swing the average sharply. Rating tendencies and how invested reviewers are also differ by country and platform (US/UK Amazon, Metacritic’s user score), so a regional gap in scores alone isn’t proof of “manipulation.” In the thread, the view that longtime fans were reacting harshly to the series’ change in direction clashed with suspicions of an organized review-bombing campaign, but no evidence was actually presented confirming fraudulent posting took place — both remain speculation among the participants. It’s also worth noting that Metacriticjs user score is likewise just a tally of anonymous submissions, though the thread itself never brought that up.

  • VIP Board Kicks Off 24-Hour Drinking Marathon — 5ch Regulars: “Stop Me If I Head to the Pachinko Parlor”

On the night of the 24th, a thread starter on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board declared a “24-hour drinking festival” and kicked off the evening with shochu mixed with cola, snacking on peanuts and seared bonito (katsuo tataki). Regulars who gathered in the thread needled the OP over having diabetes and over the fact that this was already his fourth self-imposed pachinko ban (commonly called “pachi-kin”) this month, now on its third day. The conversation ranged from struggles with cutting carbs to a request that others stop him if he looked like he was about to head to a pachinko parlor, with drinking buddies also posting photos of snacks like chicken skin and deep-fried tofu that drew comments.

    Background and Talking Points

Pachinko parlors’ “self-exclusion / family-exclusion programs” let a person — or a family member on their behalf — request that they be barred from entering for a set period. It’s a self-help tool that halls across Japan have adopted for people who recognize they have a gambling problem. The OP is on his fourth such self-exclusion this month alone, and the repeated attempts reflect how recovery from addiction rarely follows a straight line. Drinking while managing diabetes, along with his choice of snacks, is also a combination that calls for medical caution, which is the context behind regulars’ repeated ribbing about his carb intake. The OP appears to be a regular who often starts these kinds of live drinking threads, so the back-and-forth with other posters may seem abrupt to first-time readers — but it reads more smoothly once you realize it’s just familiar faces ribbing each other.

On September 24, as Fuji TV aired the friendly match between Japan’s national team and Uruguay, the 5channel “Live Commentary G” board lit up with real-time chatter. Ritsu Doan captained the starting lineup, sparking talk about the captaincy passing from Ko Itakura, debate over why both Kaishu Sano and Kota Sano — who share the surname Sano but aren’t actually related — were picked together, and chants of “Tactics: just play Zion” from fans pushing for Zion Machida, who didn’t make the starting XI. Opinions were also split over regulars like Kaoru Mitoma, Takefusa Kubo, and Junya Ito being left out of the lineup.

    Background and Talking Points

This match was a friendly rather than an official fixture, and Japan has already secured its spot at next year’s World Cup. That’s likely why regulars such as Kaoru Mitoma, Takefusa Kubo, and Junya Ito were left out in favor of testing younger and reserve players. The thread’s talk of the “Sano brothers” is a nickname stemming from Kaishu Sano and Kota Sano simply sharing a surname rather than being actually related, and confusion over this point is likely part of why some posters questioned the fairness of the selection. Meanwhile, while Ritsu Doan wore the captain’s armband this time, no clear reason was given in the thread for why Ko Itakura lost the captaincy — it remains speculation at best. The repeated show of support for Zion Machida, who didn’t play, also suggests just how much national team fans currently expect from him.

  • Men’s Table Tennis Team Beats China for First Gold in 60 Years — Harimoto & Matsushima Rally Back from the Brink

In the men’s table tennis team final on Day 6 of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Japan defeated China to win its first title in 60 years. The thread buzzed over the come-from-behind drama and the marathon match that ran past three hours. One camp argued “China must have held back its Olympic-generation players and sent a subs squad,” while another countered that “by world ranking, Japan — with Matsushima at No. 3 and Harimoto at No. 4 — was actually the stronger side.” Others noted that despite the dramatic win, the stands were oddly quiet, pointing out that the venue, Toyota City, isn’t an easy place to get to.

For China, the Olympics are a stage to show off national strength. I think they don't invest in football because if football fandom gets too hot, the public gets harder to keep under control.

    Re: #145
Actually, they've poured huge money into football and gone all in — partly because Xi Jinping himself is a football fan. The issue is that team sports are rife with connections and bribery: kids of Communist Party officials with no real talent, or guys who bribed the coach heavily, end up starting. In an individual sport like table tennis, skill is impossible to fake, but in team sports individual ability alone can't carry you, so it's fertile ground for cronyism and bribes.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This match was held at Skyhall Toyota during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with Japan said to have avenged its loss from the previous tournament and claimed its first team gold in 60 years. What split the thread was whether China had actually gone all-out: against the theory that China held back its Olympic-generation players, some pointed out that lining up the world rankings — Matsushima at No. 3, Harimoto at No. 4, and Togami at No. 13 for Japan, versus Wang Chuqin at No. 1, Lin Shidong at No. 8, and Wen Ruibo at No. 15 for China — Japan’s combined ranking was actually higher, suggesting this wasn’t necessarily a case of beating a weaker opponent. Another point of discussion was how sparse the crowd looked, which some attributed to the venue effectively functioning as China’s home turf and to Toyota City’s inconvenient location. Worth noting: the exchange about corruption in Chinese football is not primary sourcing for the table tennis result itself — it’s simply a tangent among thread participants.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “[Asian Games] Men’s table tennis team wins gold for the first time in 60 years! Finally beat China — Harimoto & Matsushima rally back from the brink, over 3 hours of intense battle“.

  • Used iPhone 14 Hits #1 in Sales for the First Time — 5ch: “You Can Get One for ¥60,000”

A survey by major used-smartphone dealer belong found that the iPhone 14 topped the used-device sales ranking for the first time, with the combined share of the iPhone 14–16 lineup roughly quadrupling from a year earlier. When 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board picked up the story, mockery of people still clinging to an old model with a Lightning port collided with praise for its roughly ¥60,000 affordability and iOS’s long support window. The thread also touched on reluctance to switch to Android phones like the Xperia, and gripes about newer models dropping the titanium body.

    Background and Key Points

The survey behind this story comes from belong, a major player in used-smartphone buyback and rental, and this marks the first time the iPhone 14 has taken the top spot in used-device sales rankings. The 14 was the last generation to use a Lightning port before the switch to USB-C from the 15 onward, which has created a gap in used prices. In the thread, voices mocking people who keep using an older model as “poor” clashed with others praising its roughly ¥60,000 affordability and iOS’s long support window. It’s worth noting, though, that this data doesn’t reflect which device performs better — it simply reflects market factors like price bracket and years of OS support, not a verdict on iPhone’s popularity itself.

Background and Talking Points on This Topic

Hello! Project is an idol-development project launched in 1998, led by flagship group Morning Musume. Given its long history, the list of “scandals” involving current and former members — including those who’ve left or graduated — has piled up considerably over the years. Of the incidents raised in this thread, Hitomi Yoshizawa’s drunk-driving hit-and-run actually resulted in a criminal conviction in 2019, which makes it categorically different from tabloid-reported romance stories like Maki Goto’s “shotgun marriage” or Mari Yaguchi’s exposed relationship. Posters in the thread drew a distinction between an incident’s real-world “impact” and its entertainment value as an anecdote — meaning a serious criminal case and a lighthearted rumor can end up sitting side by side in the same list, which is easy for readers to conflate if they’re not careful. The term “nioawase” (匂わせ, literally “hinting”), which comes up in the thread, is industry slang for when an idol posts something on social media that subtly implies they’re in a relationship — a lot of this kind of gossip grows out of speculation whose accuracy is never confirmed. Readers unfamiliar with this context may find it hard to tell reported fact apart from simple fan rumor.

  • Karin Miyamoto Opens Up on Solo Career: ‘I Thought Good Shows Would Keep Bringing Fans Back’

Karin Miyamoto, formerly of Juice=Juice, opened up on her blog about a recent show at Zepp, revealing: “When I first went solo, I thought that if I put on good shows, fans would just keep coming back next time. But reality wasn’t that kind.” The post was picked up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board and sparked mixed reactions. Some in the thread defended the idea that “good shows should draw crowds,” while others countered that “it’s not that simple in an era when ticket prices are high and fans have to prioritize living expenses,” and that “how a member leaves her group affects her drawing power afterward.” The discussion turned into a broader debate about the difficulties of a solo idol career.

Today I want to write a little about the Zepp show.

This is the same old delusion OGs have had going back to the Melon Kinenbi era.

Really glad the current members are the ones getting rewarded for once.

It's strange, isn't it — even with reduced capacity during the pandemic, her graduation concert at Budokan was packed enough that my assigned seat was in the very back row. Then again, I've only been to one of her solo shows myself.

"Solo-only" fans aren't as common as idols themselves seem to think. It's more that you fall for the songs and the group's overall vibe, then end up rooting for whichever member resonates most within that. Actually following her out of the group is pretty rare — like how few parents stay glued to a kid who's moved out and started living alone.

Graduating from a group is a turning point for the fans too, not just the member. It comes down to three choices: quit being a fan altogether along with her, switch to a new favorite, or keep following her solo. Sure, you still care how she's doing since you used to support her, but whether you actually spend money on her is a separate question.

If she'd wrapped things up and graduated the way Aarii did — giving it her all with everyone sad to see her go — I'd have kept cheering her on. ("Aarii" is another idol's nickname.)

She could've just started with wallpapering or painting one wall of her room. Then built a wall rack to match that color, and so on. Even in a rental where you can't damage the original walls, there were plenty of options, like buying pegboard panels.

It's the audience who decides whether a show was actually good.
    48AnonymousSep 24, 2026 19:51
I liked her as a group member, but as a solo act… not so much.
    49AnonymousSep 24, 2026 19:57
Why did she even leave M-line, anyway?
Also, it's about time her stage outfits went for a bit more of a mature look — the live vibe from her "karing" era was fine as it was.
    50AnonymousSep 24, 2026 19:58
She started out trying to transition into being an artist, but partway through she went back to being an idol.

So basically, the agency never ran a "please remember Karin Miyamoto" campaign for her.
    53AnonymousSep 24, 2026 20:04
A "good show" is ultimately just karaoke when you get down to it. The ticket prices are just too high.

If Karin-chan comes back to Juice=Juice, I'll go!
    68AnonymousSep 24, 2026 20:21
I used to go to her release events, up through around "Lonely Bus" or so, but I've completely stopped going now.

    Re: #68
    Why'd you stop going? \(^o^)/

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Karin Miyamoto graduated from Juice=Juice in 2020, and her stated reason at the time — wanting to pursue DIY — became a talking point. The thread repeatedly brings up the circumstances of that graduation (No. 18), with many arguing that the way she left has shaped how many fans stuck with her afterward. The debate split into two main camps: one supporting the simple cause-and-effect view that “good shows draw crowds,” and another taking a more economic view — that given high ticket prices and fans prioritizing daily living costs, show quality alone can’t explain turnout. Comments like No. 39 and No. 42 also point to a structural pattern specific to idol fandom: a member who was popular within her group isn’t necessarily still followed as a personal favorite after graduating. The idea that center-level popularity within a group doesn’t automatically translate into solo drawing power is a phenomenon frequently discussed in the idol industry, and Miyamoto’s own remarks seem to confirm that reality firsthand.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Karin Miyamoto: “When I first went solo, I thought that if I put on good shows, fans would just keep coming back next time. But reality wasn’t that kind.”“
