  • How Realistic Should Games Get? 5ch Debates Hair Physics and Water Reflections

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board asked how far game graphics should go in chasing realism. It kicked off with a thread title mocking the current obsession with rendering every single strand of hair and every ripple of water reflection. The thread split into two camps: one arguing that the more photorealistic a game gets, the more jarring it becomes when the game still can’t do things real life can — killing immersion rather than building it — and the other arguing that realistic textures are exactly what deepens immersion. The debate went on citing examples like the visual gap between Monster Hunter World and Rise, and between the old Resident Evil games and the new ones.

I get wanting to push realism as far as it'll go, but isn't this just nitpicking over tiny inaccuracies in 'realness' lol? If you want something that pretty, just go look at actual reality.

Nintendo cared so much about water rendering precisely because you can actually dive in and swim in it.

They're literally saying they hand-planted the arm hair strand by strand.
Has it really come to that even for anime-style games?

It's fine to obsess over graphics as long as the actual game content is solid too. But seriously, stop tanking visibility for it.

Real life's 'ray tracing' really is stupidly realistic, gotta admit.

"It's realistic, but you can't climb over a knee-high fence!" "It's realistic, but you don't bleed even when slashed with a sword or shot with a gun!" The more realistic you make it, the more unnatural it gets.
    53AnonymousSep 28, 2026 04:03
    Re: #50
    Exactly this.
Once the graphics alone go photoreal, you just get more and more moments of disappointment over things you can't do that you could in real life.
Even while you're fully immersed playing with photorealistic graphics, the instant you hit a "wait, I can't do that?" moment, you get yanked straight back to reality.
If that's how it's going to be, you're better off starting with decent-but-not-photoreal graphics and just filling the gaps with your imagination — you can accept it as "well, that's just how this world works."
Game development really needs to confront the photorealism problem head-on.
    55AnonymousSep 28, 2026 04:34
    Missing the point.
The whole appeal of games is being able to do things you can't do in the real world.
And realistic graphics — realistic-looking people and objects — only deepen that immersion further.

    Go ahead, rebut me.
    68AnonymousSep 28, 2026 07:15
    Re: #55
    This exactly.
I started Monster Hunter with World, cleared all the way through beating Fatalis, and that's exactly why I dropped Rise partway through.
After World, playing something with Switch-level graphics just killed the immersion completely for me.
Rise's sound effects were also weak, and the combat had zero sense of impact.
Really drove home how much graphics and sound design matter in a game.
    71AnonymousSep 28, 2026 07:27
The Switch is made for kids with rich imaginations, so it's fine if it's not that realistic.

    Re: #71
You should actually play the PS5 Patlabor game before cracking jokes like that.
Only a tiny fraction of the character models are real 3D polygons — most characters are just cel-shaded standing portraits.
All the Labors have identical stats, so the battles are monotonous as anything.
It's supposed to be a nostalgia trip reliving the anime, aimed squarely at middle-aged fans, and this is the state it's in.
You gonna keep calling that a 'kids' game' too?
Though honestly, this is coming from someone who's probably never bought a single full-price game in his life, so who knows how much it's worth.

Down the line, DLSS5 will probably be able to do the reverse too — make current games look like Virtua Fighter 1's low-poly models or Virtua Fighter 2-level polygons.
Video generation itself is already possible now, so it'll definitely be usable for that eventually — probably via a mod, though.
    88AnonymousSep 28, 2026 08:18
Why is it only games that get pushed to evolve this hard? Is the anime industry out here obsessing over hair like this too?

    Re: #88
That's just a holdover from the era when games sold purely on graphics — nobody actually wants it anymore.
These days there's no game where great graphics (visual fidelity, not art design) erase a bad reputation for the actual content.

It's not just the modeling — the visual direction, the UI, everything about it together just feels generic and interchangeable now.
The PS1-PS2 Resident Evil games had real personality, even down to the menu screens.
Resident Evil 1-3 had fixed camera angles too — partly a technical limitation back then, but it gave the games real flavor.
I think it's less about graphics per se and more about the creators' sense of style.
Same studio, Capcom, put out a new Onimusha too, and it's completely lost everything that made the original Onimusha good.
    99AnonymousSep 28, 2026 09:03
    Re: #98
AI video generation has come a long way. You can already generate high-quality anime purely with AI without breaking Akira Toriyama's character designs, and reproducing an 'in the style of ___' look is easy now.

Background and key points of this debate

Console 3D graphics have advanced year after year, and there was once a time when polygon counts and texture memory limits made it standard to skip rendering hair altogether (the thread’s “space baldy” reference is a relic of that era). Now, real-time ray tracing and improved shader technology can reproduce individual strands of hair and reflections on water, but that comes with rising development costs and more visible “seams” in the illusion. The thread split between those who see photorealism as boosting immersion, and those who argue that the more realistic a game looks, the more its limitations — like not being able to climb a fence, or not bleeding when hit — stand out as unnatural. That commenters brought up the visual gap between Monster Hunter World and Rise, or the old Resident Evil games versus the newer ones, shows that graphical direction isn’t just a matter of raw technical superiority — it’s tied directly to how a game’s overall experience is designed. A point readers often miss is that “better graphics” doesn’t equal “sells better”: anime-style and low-poly games still have a devoted following, and photorealism is just one of many possible artistic approaches.

  • Shohei Ohtani’s 9th MLB Season Stats Are In: 6th Straight 30-HR Year, But Below His Own Best

Dodgers pitcher/DH Shohei Ohtani wrapped up his regular season in the September 27 game against the Giants, closing the books on his 9th MLB season. He finished at a .275 average, 30 home runs, and 81 RBIs — down from last year in every major batting category — and struggled after coming off the injured list (IL), going 5-for-21 with 8 strikeouts. As a pitcher he was excellent, going 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA over 14 starts, but he never took the mound again in the second half. On 5ch, fans voiced disappointment over his fading MVP hopes, debated whether the two-way act should continue, and speculated about how he’ll be used going forward.

    Sanspo, 09/28/2026 05:47

Giants vs. Dodgers (September 27, San Francisco) — In MLB action, Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani (32) batted leadoff and started at DH against the Giants. He went 1-for-3 before being pulled for a pinch hitter in the sixth. It was the final game of the regular season, closing out the stat line for Ohtani’s 9th MLB year.

Ohtani played in 139 games this season, hitting .275 with 30 home runs, 81 RBIs, 89 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, and 152 strikeouts. Hampered by injuries, he came in under last season’s numbers across the board. As a pitcher, he went 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA over 14 starts, striking out 95 in 85 2/3 innings and drawing Cy Young buzz in the first half — but he didn’t pitch again after that. Since returning from the injured list, he’d gone just 5-for-21 with 8 strikeouts.

Yeah, he's racking up strikeouts because he can't lay off garbage pitches.

    Background and Talking Points

Ohtani has won multiple MVP awards as a two-way player since 2021, but this injury-plagued season saw every major stat — batting average, home runs, RBIs — fall below last year’s marks. As a pitcher, he looked like a genuine Cy Young contender in the first half with a 1.79 ERA, but he never took the mound again in the second half, and even at the plate he lost his spark after coming off the IL, hitting just 5-for-21 with 8 strikeouts. Opinions in the thread split between those who think continuing the two-way workload is taking too heavy a toll on his body, and those more sympathetic who argue he’d have posted his usual numbers if not for the injuries. Note that the source article’s suggestion that he “might be hiding pain the way Roki Sasaki did” is purely the reporter’s speculation, not something Ohtani himself has confirmed.

  • Sony “Less Reliant on Hardware and First-Party Software” Analysis Draws 5ch Skepticism: “Is SONY Really Doing That?”

An analysis piece published by the business media outlet dime.jp argued that while Nintendo’s stock fell after unveiling a new “Kirby” title, Sony has grown less dependent on selling game consoles and first-party software, with revenue from add-on content for existing titles increasingly becoming the core of its business. The article was picked up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“GeHa”) board, where reactions split between cold dismissal of the piece as a Sony-friendly puff piece and a more sympathetic view that the shift toward an add-on/microtransaction model does have some merit. Several posters also pointed to Sony’s reliance on other companies’ free-to-play titles, such as Genshin Impact.

Stock Price Drops After New “Kirby” Announcement — The IP-Nurturing Dilemma Plaguing Nintendo

PlayStation, on the other hand, is the one that fits today’s market. That’s because its business model is becoming less dependent on how many consoles or first-party titles it sells.

At Sony’s games business, add-on content — additional content released later for existing software — now accounts for a large share of revenue.

Well, there is some truth to what this article says, though.
Nintendo's policy of prioritizing user enjoyment over profit gets a cold reception from shareholders, so the stock falls.
Sony's policy of squeezing huge profits out of users through spending is well liked by shareholders, so the stock rises.
Users and shareholders each have their own position, so you can't flatly say which is better.

    Re: #14
Given that this is a home console business, I think Sony's approach is going to get harder going forward.
The issue is that home console hardware gets replaced with something new every few years.
When PS6 comes out, how many users will actually switch over?
They can't keep running PS5 for 10 or 20 years, and will users who only play free-to-play games bother upgrading to PS6 just to keep playing?
Looked at that way, Nintendo, which prioritizes user enjoyment, is more likely to get users to buy the next piece of hardware.

In the short term SIE's [Sony Interactive Entertainment] approach might work out, but in the long term Nintendo's approach might actually be the better one.

Hook it up to a TV and a controller and you can play Genshin or any other free-to-play game just fine.

These days, nobody in Japan but a Sony employee would praise a dying PlayStation.
And the fact that the content amounts to praising the "giant smartphone" means that's basically Sony's official line.

This might also explain the point of the miHoYo anime adaptation.
Maybe they want an early-access tie-in on PS to headline their subscription service and spending.
Sounds like they also want to launch a PS-hardware-exclusive video service.

    50AnonymousSep 28, 2026 00:25
    This is beyond ridiculous lol

Background and Key Points of Debate

The backdrop here is the growing presence of free-to-play, gacha-monetized titles like Genshin Impact, which has reinforced the console’s role as just one of several ways to play such games. Opinion in the thread split between two readings: viewing this positively as “a stable revenue structure no longer dependent on hardware or first-party unit sales,” versus viewing it skeptically as “simply losing the ability to earn on its own and becoming reliant on other companies’ software.” Not mentioned in the article itself is that home consoles get replaced with new hardware every few years, and it’s unclear how many users of free-to-play titles will actually follow along when that transition happens — this uncertainty is part of why some commenters questioned the model’s long-term stability. The overseas backlash against moves like dropping the disc drive, a topic making headlines around the same time, also appears to be feeding into the skeptical reception this analysis piece received.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch Hardware/Industry (“GeHa”) board thread “Fuwa [presumably the dime.jp article’s author]: ‘Sony’s business model is becoming less dependent on how many consoles and first-party titles it sells’.”

  • RTX 4060: “Should’ve Bought It at ¥40,000” — Thread Spirals into Full GPU Pricing Debate

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board kicked off with a comment arguing that people should have bought the RTX 4060 GPU back when it could be had for around ¥40,000. Posters noted that resale/buyback prices for the card are still hovering in the ¥40,000 range, and the discussion branched into whether 8GB of VRAM is enough and how the price gap stacks up against higher-end models like the 5060, 5070 Ti, and 9060 XT. The conversation then drifted into console-vs-PC territory, with posters sharing Forza Horizon 6 screenshots to compare PS5 and PS6 performance.

Why are you setting the bar as high as a 5070 Ti? What's wrong with you lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The RTX 4060 launched at around ¥60,000, but subsequent price drops and swings in the used market meant there was a window when it could be picked up for around ¥40,000. Rather than debating the purchase decision itself, the thread’s discussion mostly centered on whether 8GB of VRAM is sufficient and how the card’s value for money stacks up against successor/competing models like the 5060 and 9060 XT. “Geha,” as in the board’s name, is short for “game hardware,” and terms like “Goki” and “Nishi” that appear in the posts are conventional board slang referring to PlayStation and Nintendo supporters respectively — not attacks on real individuals. It’s also worth noting that the back-and-forth over PS6 performance is based on unofficial leaks rather than official announcements, so the actual specs have not been confirmed.

  • Fujinami Shintaro, cut from next season’s plans, wants to stay in NPB — ‘I got my own pitching style back,’ confident in his comeback

Shintaro Fujinami, reportedly set to be cut from DeNA’s plans for next season, started against the Giants on September 27 in what was the farm team’s final game of the season, and was pulled after allowing 5 runs (4 earned) in 3 innings. Despite going the whole season without a single first-team appearance amid reports that he’s being left out of next year’s plans, Fujinami commented that “toward the end, I got my own pitching style back,” signaling his desire to continue his NPB career. Fujinami joined Hanshin as the team’s first-round pick in the 2012 draft, and is known as a pitcher who pairs a blazing fastball with chronic control problems; he also has MLB experience after moving to the United States. On a 5channel thread, users traded predictions about which team might sign him next season and debated his current velocity, with opinions split over how to take his upbeat comments.

Kind of like Mima's retirement game, huh (Mima Manabu, a pitcher remembered for late-career control issues)

    Background and talking points

Since joining Hanshin as the team’s first-round pick in the 2012 draft, Fujinami has been a pitcher who wielded a blazing fastball as his weapon while continually battling control problems, and he also has MLB experience dating back to 2023. This “left out of plans” report suggests he may not be kept on next season’s registered roster, and whether he actually remains in NPB now depends on other teams’ decisions. Several predictions about his next destination came up in the thread, but it’s worth noting that none of them are backed by solid information — they remain speculation. According to posts in the thread, his fastball tops out at around 154 km/h, and the fact that the focus is on his control rather than velocity itself lines up with points raised in previous coverage. The thread showed a split in tone between those willing to take his upbeat comments at face value and those taking a harsher view that his results don’t back it up.

    Background and Discussion Points

This thread is one installment of “全力スレ” (the “All-Out Thread”), a long-running format on 5ch’s VIP board in which a moderator assigns a topic via reply-quote (an “anker”) and participants have to track down the actual item, photograph it, and post it as proof. The “otsu” that shows up constantly in replies is 5ch shorthand for “good work” — a casual nod of appreciation for the effort of hunting something down. This particular thread marked the final day of a holiday special, with prompts ranging from everyday objects like a down comforter, a basketball, and framed postage stamps to more abstract ones like a forum flame war caught in the act or a fighting-game special-move input. The grand finale — a taste comparison of coffee from Japan’s three major convenience store chains — appears to have involved hopping between multiple stores late at night, and the thread lit up with posters sharing in the sense of accomplishment. What might look like idle hanging-out at a glance actually comes with the extra step of proving each item with real, physical evidence.

*This article was compiled by excerpting and summarizing the 5ch (News VIP) thread “[Final Day] Holiday Special.”

  • Horiemon’s Trick for Paying at a Cash-Only Shop With Empty Pockets Sparks Debate

Entrepreneur Takafumi Horie sparked a stir on X (formerly Twitter) by sharing how he’d handle running out of cash at a cash-only shop. It started when creative director Shimpei Takagi posted, “I came to Kyoto without my cards or wallet — if my phone battery dies, I’m done for.” In response, someone suggested asking the shop for its bank account details and paying by online bank transfer, but on 5ch this set off a wave of practical questions: “Can the shop even confirm the deposit on the spot?” and “Would a part-time staffer even have the authority to look up account details?” The discussion expanded further into past disasters where cashless payment became unusable during power outages, escalating into a broader debate over whether people still need to carry cash.

Horiemon — what would he do with no cash at a “cash-only” shop? His trick has people saying “I never thought of that!”

Entrepreneur Takafumi Horie (53) updated his official X (formerly Twitter) account by the 27th, revealing his solution for when you’re out of cash at a “cash-only” shop.

Creative director Shimpei Takagi had posted: “Uh oh, I came to Kyoto without my cards or wallet. If my phone battery dies, I’m as good as dead.”

    A shop isn't a private citizen, it's a public-facing business…
But a shop's bank account is still private info to the shop — would they really hand it over that easily (in an emergency)?
For example, if someone eats at a cash-only place and has no cash, and says "give me your bank account, I'll pay electronically" — would they really give it out 100% of the time?
    25AnonymousSep 27, 2026 23:57
    Re: #23 continued
No, they wouldn't necessarily give it out 100% of the time. If anything, refusal or trouble is more likely.
There are mainly four reasons a shop would be reluctant — or refuse outright — to share their account info.

〇1 Security and abuse risk: once someone else knows the account number and name, there's a risk of it being misused as a destination for scam transfers, or signed up for unauthorized direct debits.

〇2 Confirmation hassle and time lag: with electronic transfers (like bank-transfer features), the shop may not be able to confirm the deposit on the spot (outside business hours, or due to system limits).

〇3 Bookkeeping headaches: what should be recorded as cash sales becomes messy for bookkeeping and tax purposes once it's transferred into a personal (or separate) account instead.

〇4 Store policy: at chain stores especially, any payment method or account disclosure not covered by the manual is almost always flatly forbidden.

Well, I guess it's fine even if you don't eat for a few days, since you can get bread rations at an evacuation shelter, right?

…That's what I thought, but then I googled it, and the fact that major newspapers and the police keep putting out warnings like this must mean there are plenty of clueless people who go "I don't carry cash~" and then get stuck with no cash when an actual disaster hits.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Cashless payment is convenient in normal times, but it stops working during power outages or communications failures — a point raised before during the 2018 Hokkaido earthquake and the 2020 Kyushu floods, with the Metropolitan Police Department and newspapers repeatedly urging people to “keep cash on hand for emergencies.” What split opinion in the thread was how practical the fix Horie and others proposed — “get the shop’s bank account and confirm it via online transfer” — actually is in real-world use. Plenty of practical questions came up: transfer fees and free-transfer limits, the fact that deposits can’t be confirmed outside business hours, and that part-time staff often lack the authority to look up account details — turning it into a debate that doesn’t resolve with a simple “just carry cash.” Note that whether Horie himself actually used this method to pay isn’t confirmed by the original article.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Horiemon] Takafumi Horie — what would he do with no cash at a “cash-only” shop? His trick has people saying “I never thought of that!”“

  • GTA5 Stands Alone: 5ch Says ‘It Only Sold So Much Because No Sequel Ever Came’

A post claiming “GTA was basically unknown before GTA5” kicked off a debate on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board about how well-known the GTA series really was in Japan. Several replies pushed back with sales data showing GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas each sold over 15 million copies during the PS2 era, arguing the series was far from obscure. Others countered that GTA never cracked the top 50 in Japan’s domestic sales charts, leaving the question of its actual name recognition unresolved. Some pointed out that GTA5 only looks so disproportionately huge because it went years without a sequel, letting its sales figures keep piling up unchallenged.

    46AnonymousSep 27, 2026 22:42
Yeah, there really is this sudden hype thing that happens.
Not just GTA — Fallout, The Witcher, COD, and lately that "whatever-33" game too. Way too many Western games get suddenly hyped up out of nowhere.
And since people always recommend starting from part 2 or 3, it's genuinely hard to get into, and even when you do play it, you're completely lost.
The bugs are awful too. Keep this up and it's not just Western games sinking — PlayStation's going down with them.
    51AnonymousSep 27, 2026 22:48
The PS2 had five entries (two of them PSP ports), but ever since GTA5 dropped, there's been an unnaturally long drought with no sequel — its sales just kept climbing during that gap.
    56AnonymousSep 27, 2026 22:53
    Re: #51
Exactly this. Sales window's way too long, plus all the "Sutogura" streamers (ストグラ, a popular Japanese GTA roleplay-server streaming scene) keeping it relevant.

    Re: #50
Exactly, the build quality is just bad.
They get hyped to death and still turn out badly made, so honestly I have zero goodwill toward PS because of it.
Back in the PS3 era there was a Western-game boom and I played a few of the buzzy titles — the craftsmanship was genuinely shoddy, riddled with bugs, and I felt cheated more times than I can count.
And if you complain, you get "bugs just come with Western games and open worlds," so of course people bail.
Probably why Japan ends up all-Nintendo — too many casuals who only play Japanese games.

    Oh, really?
I had no idea and honestly zero interest, so I just assumed it was some sequel.
For the record, I only brought it up as an example of "a game that was in Early Access for a while and then suddenly gets hyped the moment it's ported to PS — which feels off."
Wasn't it in Early Access for like two or three years? Then the second a PS port was announced, everyone suddenly started hyping it, which struck me as strange.

I don't remember everything from that far back, but I think I played the ones that got some buzz at the time — Fallout 3, Kingdoms of Amalur, GTA5, and The Last of Us.
Fallout 3 in particular I remember being seriously bad; The Last of Us, on the other hand, was a genuine masterpiece — though part 2 ruined all of that.
Just checked my game shelf and realized I've gotten rid of most of them. Bit of a waste, honestly.

It froze constantly and I kept getting stuck on objects — I was playing it on edge the whole time.
I bought it right around launch, before any real patches had come out, so it was just freeze after freeze, getting stuck in geometry, over and over.
I hear it eventually got fixed after a while, but ever since then I stopped buying Western games on release day.

It was a pretty big deal when GTA3 finally got announced for a much-delayed Japanese release.
Famitsu Wave DVD even ran a pretty long promo video, and I remember thinking, "why is a game with such dated graphics getting this much coverage?"
I'd guess that's around when it actually became known in Japan.
    102AnonymousSep 28, 2026 00:34
    Re: #93
GTA3 became known through its explosive overseas success.
A 1–2 year delay for localization was totally normal back then, so nothing strange about it.
San Andreas was the one whose release got seriously delayed, tied to a major overhaul of CERO's (Japan's game ratings body) rules.
It got hit with some absurd restrictions — like not letting you spend money properly — and was so unpopular that importing the overseas version and fan-translating it into Japanese became a whole trend.
    99AnonymousSep 28, 2026 00:23
Wasn't it Capcom and CERO that were butting heads over this for ages?
    103AnonymousSep 28, 2026 00:38
    Re: #99
Sony rejected it outright, which meant GTA3 couldn't be released on the Japanese PS2.
Capcom ended up taking the lead in setting up CERO so that GTA3 could actually be released.

    Background and Talking Points

The GTA series has historically been a heavyweight overseas, selling in the tens of millions with every release — figures cited in the thread put GTA3 at 15 million, Vice City at 20 million, San Andreas at 28 million, and GTA4 at 25 million. On the other hand, GTA never cracked the top of Japan’s domestic PS2 sales charts, which were dominated by Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy — highlighting a gap between its “global blockbuster” status and its actual name recognition within Japan. As the thread notes, GTA3’s Japanese release was delayed because Sony balked at its violent content, and the game only made it out after the establishment of CERO (the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization). GTA5 looks disproportionately famous less because of raw sales growth and more because no sequel followed for years, letting its sales window — bolstered by ongoing online content — keep stretching out. Worth noting: the thread’s own fact-check pushed back on the premise that “1 through 4 were completely unknown” in the first place.

  • Nippori-Toneri Liner Hits 177% Congestion — Worst in Japan for 5th Year Running, 5ch: ‘The Real Problem Is No Demand in the Reverse Direction’

The thread kicks off from an article reporting that the Nippori-Toneri Liner’s congestion rate hit 177%, the worst in the country for the fifth year running. The original article laid out three barriers explaining why “just add more trains” doesn’t work, but posters on the thread kept circling back to a structural problem rather than the technical constraints (the limits of keeping cars light on rubber tires, and the difficulty of adding service given its driverless automated operation): there’s almost no demand in the reverse direction during the morning rush, so running more trains wouldn’t pay off anyway. The thread also lit up over the contrast between Europe, where pouring tax money into public transit is taken for granted, and Japan, where that’s avoided, plus regional banter about riders commuting in from Chiba and Saitama.

The thing is, the Nippori-Toneri Liner isn't even profitable despite that — that's one of its biggest problems.
There's no demand in the reverse direction.
The Utsunomiya LRT (branded "the Light Line") is the flip side — it nailed reverse-direction demand and became a huge success.

Since it runs on rubber tires, apparently if you pull the seats and cram it full, the tires would literally blow out.
There's also a limit to how light they can make the cars.
    81AnonymousSep 27, 2026 14:56
    This got exposed during COVID:
Tokyo's rail network only works on the assumption that rush hour trains run packed.
The moment ridership thinned out, they cut the number of trains.
Everything else is just an excuse.

    Re: #81
Exactly, aiming for under 100% ridership is nothing but a fantasy.

    130AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:14

    131AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:31
    Re: #130
Raise it any more and the Toei one-day pass would end up cheaper lol

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The congestion rate is a figure Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism publishes every year, showing the ratio of passengers to a train’s rated capacity. 100% means every seat and strap is taken; around 180% is considered the point where you can no longer comfortably read a newspaper or magazine and can barely move, and 177% sits just below that line. The Nippori-Toneri Liner is an Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) system that runs on rubber tires instead of rails and operates driverlessly, designed on the assumption that its cars stay light and small — which makes it hard to add cars or beef up the trainsets the way a conventional railway can. The argument that got the most support in the thread was that demand skews heavily toward the city center in the morning and toward the suburbs in the evening, leaving the reverse direction nearly empty — so investment in more service or longer trains is hard to recoup. In other words, posters framed it less as a simple shortage of equipment and more as a problem baked into the line’s profit structure. Meanwhile, opinions split between those who felt public transit should be tax-subsidized as in Europe, and those taking a more self-responsibility line — if it’s not profitable, that’s just how it is, and if you don’t like it, don’t ride — with no clear consensus reached.

  • Becky Returns to ‘Itte Q!’ After 10 Years, Moved to Tears — Miyagawa Daisuke Sobs, Uchimura Teruyoshi: ‘I Couldn’t Sleep’

Talent Becky appeared on Nippon TV’s “Itte Q! The Ends of the Earth” on September 27, marking her first appearance on the show in 10 years. This is her first comeback to the flagship program since the 2016 affair scandal broke, and co-star Miyagawa Daisuke reportedly burst into tears, while Uchimura Teruyoshi admitted, “I couldn’t sleep [the night before].” On the 5channel “Entertainment/Sports News+” board, threads buzzed with surprise (“Has it really been 10 years already?”) alongside debate over why Becky alone was frozen out of showbiz for so long. Opinions split over where to draw the “forgivable vs. unforgivable” line compared with Saito Yuki, whose affair was reported around the same time, and Tegoshi Yuya, who also has a history of suspending his activities.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In 2016, weekly tabloids reported that Becky was in a relationship with a married man, and she indefinitely suspended her show-business activities afterward. She made sporadic comebacks in dramas and other projects, but this marks her first appearance in a while on “Itte Q,” the flagship show she once co-hosted. The thread’s central debate was the gap in “how quickly they got to come back” compared with Saito Yuki, whose affair was reported around the same time, and Tegoshi Yuya, who also has a history of suspending his activities. Posters pointed to factors like Saito Yuki’s career as an actress and her agency’s backing, and the fact that Tegoshi’s suspension was framed as “a response to COVID protocols, not an affair” — but none of this was ever officially explained by the people involved; it remains speculation on the viewers’ part. Exactly how the show’s producers arrived at the decision to have her appear this time is also not made clear in the original article.
