The story

A thread titled “Take a look at the current character usage rates in Street Fighter 6” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (Anything Goes Live) board, and posters had a field day dissecting the numbers. The thread lit up with surprise that Zangief — long an unpopular pick throughout the series — is ranking near the top again this time, plus a fun bit of trivia: Terry, famous from KOF, actually originated as a Street Fighter 1 character.

Takashi…!

Did they finally buff Ryu (written with the kanji 隆)?
3AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:12
Re: #2
He's been buffed little by little — not the best in the game, but he's high-spec now.
98AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:53
Re: #2
He's actually in the running for best character right now.
11AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:14
Zangief is popular?? For real?!
15AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:15
Re: #11
Say what you want, but he's always near the top of the usage charts.
18AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:16
Re: #15
Did Zangief's popularity start with SF4? I feel like he used to be in the unpopular tier.
23AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:18
So how's Terry? If he's strong I might actually pick up SF6.
35AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:22
Re: #23
He got nerfed a bit but he's still top-tier. Honestly there aren't any weak characters in this game to begin with.
36AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:22
Re: #23
Terry's top tier right now.

Ryu's usage rate stays near the top even when he's weak, though it depends on the rank bracket.
27AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:18
With this many characters, how come nobody from the Street Fighter EX series made the cut?
33AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:20
Re: #27
Well, those characters belong to a different company.
43AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:26
Wait, isn't Terry a KOF character?
53AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:30
Re: #43
He was originally a Street Fighter character who ended up moonlighting at "the gallery" (画廊, a pun on 餓狼/Garou, aka Fatal Fury).
49AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:29
Of course — there's never been a Street Fighter game where Ryu was weak.
64AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:34
Re: #49
In SF2, Ryu and Ken were like the second-weakest after Zangief.
77AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:40
Re: #49
There's never been an era across the whole series where Ryu counted as meta-defining, must-pick material.
57AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:32
Re: #53
No way!? Terry wasn't even in the first game, was he?
71AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:37
Re: #57
Apparently this guy who only shows up on the title screen is Terry's original design. He wasn't properly implemented as a playable character until Fatal Fury.

Re: #45
I can never really tell the difference between that and KOF. Who's even the main character in KOF again?
62AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:33
Re: #59
Isn't it Kyo?
63AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:34
Re: #59
Come on, everyone knows Kyo Kusanagi.
"Heh, bet that lit you up." (his famous catchphrase)
66AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:35
Re: #59
For KOF, I'd say Kyo and Iori are basically the main characters. But the game itself is an SNK all-star crossover, so all kinds of SNK characters show up.
61AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:33
An environment where Zangief is strong is worse than garbage. He should stay a total scrub who can only win if he lands one lucky read — anything more and he's just a mountain of stress to fight.
67AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:35
Re: #61
He's not actually strong. He's just got a huge fanbase of diehards who play him no matter what.
69AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:36
Terry's story is a myth, but Street Fighter 1's Eagle actually did transfer to Fatal Fury, became Billy, and never came back.
74AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:38
Re: #69
He came back in Capcom vs. SNK 2, though.
76AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:39
Re: #69
You don't know about Zero 3 Upper?
79AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:42
Juri really is genuinely popular. Her kit's rough enough that you'd need to actually love the character to stick with her.
81AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:43
Re: #79
She's popular across the board, regardless of gender.
86AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:47
I don't know much about this stuff, but couldn't they just buff whoever has the lowest usage rate?
88AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:47
Re: #86
Blanka's a strong character but nobody wants to play him 🥲
93AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:51
Why is there a KOF character in this? Did Street Fighter turn into Smash Bros.?
94AnonymousAug 21, 2026 13:52
Re: #93
Cross-company character collabs are the big trend in fighting games right now.
103AnonymousAug 21, 2026 14:05
It's actually fairly spread out, isn't it? Young female characters like Mai, Juri, and Cammy clearly have steady demand.
107AnonymousAug 21, 2026 14:12
Re: #103
Then where does that leave Lily and Kimberly, who look even younger?
122AnonymousAug 21, 2026 14:46
I got wrecked by a Zangief while playing Cammy about two years ago and quit, that jerk.
124AnonymousAug 21, 2026 14:48
Re: #122
Cammy looks like she has a lot of freedom, but once you actually play her she feels stifling and weak.

Background and Key Points

Zangief has been Street Fighter’s designated joke pick since the earliest games — a slow, no-projectile grappler whose entire kit is built around eating chip damage to land a command grab, and for most of the series’ 35-plus-year history he sat at or near the bottom of tournament tier lists precisely because that playstyle punishes any mistake severely while offering little reward against a competent opponent who just runs away. Street Fighter 6, released by Capcom in 2023, changed the equation with its Drive system and rebalanced grapple mechanics, and Zangief has consistently shown up near the top of the game’s usage-rate charts ever since — a genuine reversal that surprised even longtime players in the thread.

The actual disagreement in the thread wasn’t about whether Zangief’s numbers are real — nobody disputed the data — but about what the numbers mean. One camp (post 67) argued high usage doesn’t equal high strength: Zangief simply has an unusually loyal fanbase that keeps picking him regardless of win rate, so usage rate is measuring devotion, not power. Nobody in the thread offered hard win-rate data to settle it either way, so the thread ends in disagreement rather than resolution.

What’s likely to trip up readers unfamiliar with Capcom’s roster history is the Terry Bogard tangent: he did not originate in Street Fighter as a playable fighter. The “Street Fighter 1 Terry” claim refers to an unused/background design sketch that only appears on a title screen, later repurposed when SNK built Fatal Fury (Garou Densetsu) as a spin-off using Capcom’s leftover concept art — a well-known but easily garbled piece of trivia, and the thread’s discussion of it (posts 53, 71) already contains some confusion between “concept origin” and “he was a cut playable character.”
