The story
At the 2026 IFBB World Championships held in Santa Susanna, Spain from October 29 to November 2, Misaki Otani (39) swept three divisions: Wellness 158cm and under, Masters 35-39, and Masters Overall. In men’s bodybuilding, Ryo Terayama and Kensuke Kawanaka both took 2nd place, marking Japan’s first medal in the category in 10 years. Team Japan had a strong overall showing with 5 gold, 8 silver, and 5 bronze medals, but on 5ch forums, discussion focused less on the achievement itself and more on the competitors’ physiques, the balance of their facial features in photos, and suspicions linking their muscle size to steroid use.

What people said
Definitely bald down there, if you catch my drift
Also, is the guy on the left (as we're looking) 'Chibi Norida'?
Like a composite photo
staying jacked even at 70 or 80
Makes you wonder if their healthy lifespan is longer too?
There's an active 90-year-old bodybuilder (though he competes in the 80-and-over division). Years of training have left his posture permanently gorilla-like, but between that and his skin, he doesn't look 90 at all.
His diet: natto with brown rice and veggie miso soup once a day, nibbling on brown rice with tsukudani seaweed for sugar, soy protein for protein, and blueberries to fight oxidation.
Apparently after retiring from bodybuilding he's planning to research how to become a Taoist hermit.
Only if they're natural.
Old-school bodybuilders actually used to outlive the average person — it wasn't until injections (💉) became common that they started dying young.
Like those reader-submitted photos in old adult magazines
Japanese people tend to have either baby faces or big heads, so it never quite balances out with a super-jacked body
What's wrong with that being entertainment?
The person in the middle looks like a Marvel character lol, probably popular with American women lol
Even a legendary bodybuilder like Dorian is just a fat guy once you take away the drugs.
Same goes for Ronnie Coleman.
Those guys' physiques are basically all steroids.
But from my 25 years of lifting, muscle really only grows during what's jokingly called the 'beginner doping period' — the newbie-gains phase.
That's about the first 3 years after you start training, tops.
After that, it's just endless maintenance training forever.
Nakayama Kinnikun has been disciplined his whole life, but his physique is exactly the same now as when he debuted in showbiz.
Didn't Dorian get super skinny and end up looking like a regular guy after he retired and came off the drugs?
Kevin's the same way.
And more recently, even though he's not a bodybuilder, Dwayne Johnson is too — without the juice he'd be laughably unimpressive.
Is that Takano-san?
Bodybuilders have short lifespans
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
The IFBB World Championships is an annual competition held by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness, with divisions finely split by body type and age — Wellness, Physique, Masters, and more — while the Overall title is the top honor contested among the winners of each class. Japan’s first men’s bodybuilding medal in 10 years is a figure that reflects a real recovery in competitiveness after a long stretch away from the podium. Rather than celebration, the thread was dominated by comments questioning the gap between the competitors’ sculpted bodies and their faces, and whether their muscle size pointed to steroid use. In reality, there are known cases of athletes who passed doping tests but whose physiques changed dramatically after retirement, and even experts say it’s difficult to judge from appearance alone whether someone is natural.
