The story

Mitarashi dango (sweet soy-glazed rice dumplings) recommended as an Osaka souvenir by singer-songwriter Suga Shikao on Threads has sparked a huge reaction on social media. The product is believed to come from a shop near Juso Station, and comments like “I eat it once a week” and “I always end up lining up to buy it” have poured in. On the 5ch thread, alongside chatter about the dango itself, Osaka staples like 551 Horai, Rikuro’s Cheesecake, and Gozasho kept coming up one after another, and the discussion snowballed into the old East-vs-West food culture debate: “There’s no good food in Tokyo.”

The dango shop near Kyoto Imperial Palace was delicious.

Guess they sell mitarashi dango outside Kyoto too.

Re: #6
They're sitting right next to the register at convenience stores all over Japan.
9AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:07
You'd think the sauce is what matters most with mitarashi, but obviously, if the dango itself isn't good, the whole thing just doesn't come together.
11AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:09
Well, there's basically no other shop making mitarashi dango this way in the first place.
It's near where I live, and yeah, it's tasty.
But that's really thanks to the fresh-grilled aroma, so honestly, I think it'd do decently well anywhere with enough foot traffic.

What are you talking about?
This and Chicken Ramen are the two kings of 'gets old by the second bite.'
20AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:15
The main store is also famous for its lightning-fast boxing and string-tying.
21AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:15
Yakitori places should really add mitarashi dango to the menu.
I bet it'd sell like crazy.
22AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:15
Mitarashi dango?
There are good ones in Kanto too, surely.
24AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:17
He was a guest on today's episode of Yoi Don (a Kansai morning TV show).
26AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:21
The abekawa version (coated in sweet soybean flour) was so good, but they discontinued it.
27AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:25
The mitarashi dango from my local shop is the best.
Can't say the name though, it'd give away where I live.
28AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:25
I've never had 551 (Horai) before, so now I'm dying to try it.

Re: #28
The filling's great, but I'm not a fan of how thick the outer dough is.
29AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:25
Isn't Suga Shikao from Shiga?

Re: #29
That's Masayoshi Yamazaki you're thinking of.
30AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:26
The charred bits are so good.
It's sweet, but there's a nice salty kick too.
Really adds an accent.
31AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:32
That one's different from Minami's takoyaki — even Kansai locals actually buy it.
35AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:34
'Gozasho' (Himeji) is on a whole different level of delicious compared to Kanto's imagawayaki.

'Gozasho' has stores in famous department stores and malls nationwide, with lines that never seem to let up.
36AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:34
They've been saying 'there's no good food in Tokyo' since forever.
37AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:35
Re: #36
I think the accurate version is 'In Tokyo, you can't get good food unless you pay up.'

Re: #38
They spend that much on ads and still don't make the cut.
Poor Akanemaru. Never actually tried it, though.

I love the Dojima Roll.
40AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:41
Kanda Hakuzan (the rakugo storyteller) was a fan of Rikuro's Cheesecake too.
No matter how many times you eat it, you can never quite decide if it's good or bad — that exact razor's edge.
Totally get that lol
43AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:45
Re: #40
Rikuro's is the kind of thing you eat fresh out of the oven, going 'hot, hot, hot' with a glass of milk in hand, back when it was a flat 500 yen.
It used to be a great deal, but these days… well.
46AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:47
That's totally different from the mitarashi dango you see at Osaka Station.
Never seen one like this before.
52AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:52
Re: #46
They do sell it at Daimaru Umeda (Osaka Station), though.
50AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:49
It's tasty, but not line-worthy.
53AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:52
Re: #50
It's more of a snack-when-you're-a-little-hungry thing.
People are hyping up junk food from Juso, a cheap bar district, way too much.
70AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:08
It's tasty, but there's always so much leftover mitarashi sauce that it feels like such a waste.
77AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:23
Re: #70
Just save the leftover sauce and spread it on toast.

Kyoto…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This topic is a textbook example of an “Osaka souvenir” boom sparked by a celebrity’s social media post. Even on the thread, the shop’s exact official name was never pinned down — the only clue is that it’s located near Juso Station. The split in opinion was less about the taste itself and more about whether it was “worth lining up for,” dividing posters into a satisfied camp and a cooler-headed camp who saw it as merely “something to take the edge off hunger.” Osaka standbys like 551 Horai, Rikuro’s Cheesecake, and Gozasho also came up one after another as points of comparison, feeding into the old debate comparing Tokyo’s and Osaka’s food cultures. Some posts in the thread contained inappropriate remarks about specific places or backgrounds, so those replies have been excluded from this article.
