The story

It was reported during Game 4 of the Japan Series (on the 28th) that DeNA infielder Yoshitomo Tsutsugo is considering exercising his foreign free agency rights this offseason. Tsutsugo moved to the Rays in 2020 and returned to DeNA in 2024. Foreign FA rights are granted separately from domestic FA rights and don’t necessarily mean a move overseas. On 5ch, skeptical voices citing his age and the outcome of his previous MLB stint stood out, while others speculated he’d been inspired by Munetaka Murakami’s success in the majors, or suggested he might instead move to another NPB team — reactions were split.

He's already 35. Still not over it, huh?
8AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:14
Didn't he come back because he couldn't cut it over there?
Seeing Murakami succeed must've lit a fire under him.
9AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:14
He probably just wants out of Yokohama.
37AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:24
Re: #9
If that were true, he wouldn't have come back.
11AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:16
Probably because of Murakami.
But age-wise it's gonna be rough.
13AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:16
Seriously?
Thought he'd settle down and finish his career in Japan, but seeing Japanese guys succeed over there must've made him want to try again.
15AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:17
The exact opposite of 'once bitten, blow on cold soup' (a Japanese saying for being overly cautious after getting burned — he's doing the reverse).
Tough on the family probably, but if the man himself wants to do it, nothing to be done.

Tsutsugo: born Nov 26, 1991 (34)
Tobashira: born Apr 11, 1990 (36)

Tsutsugo isn't 35, by the way!
He's still 34.
Tobashira's age of 36 is correct though.
17AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:17
Hasn't he learned his lesson yet?
35 is a no-go.
18AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:17
Seriously? lololololol
Inspired by Murakami's 'success'? lol
19AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:18
Tsutsugo: 'I'm free to want a challenge.'
MLB: 'Please don't.'
20AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:18
Gotta give him credit for guts.
Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, who knows.
21AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:19
Turns out his pride was actually wounded!
22AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:20
Dunno what's going on, but if he loves the minors that much, let him go back.
23AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:20
Just having foreign FA rights doesn't mean he's heading to MLB.
He might just end up with the Giants.
26AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:21
Is he aiming for MLB again?
He's such a 'Mr. BayStars' type of player that I can't even picture him moving to another NPB team.
29AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:21
Wait, really? He's basically the poster boy for position players who failed in the majors.
32AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:22
Didn't he come back to Japan because he'd hit his limit and the paycheck was good?
If he goes back to the US he's just going to end up not hitting again.
It's not like he suddenly got better against fastballs.
33AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:23
Exercising foreign FA rights doesn't mean he's actually leaving Japan.
Norimoto did the same thing last year and ended up with the Giants.
34AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:23
Age-wise it's his last shot,
so I get where the feeling comes from,
but he really should give up on the majors.
If it's a domestic move, some teams would want him though.

Actually, wouldn't the Carp take him?
38AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:25
Maybe he's headed to the KBO?
84AnonymousOct 29, 2026 03:13
Re: #38
The KBO's Asian-quota slots are pitchers only.
40AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:25
Maybe 'overseas' means Taiwan or Korea.
42AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:26
They just said 'overseas' — they never said MLB.
43AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:27
Really feels like the hot stove league has kicked off.
The most fun time of the year.
46AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:32
Matsui's probably headed to the Giants.
The Giants already poached Hanshin's Oyama and Morishita, plus DeNA's Maki too.
48AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:34
He just has to accept the reality that he couldn't cut it…
Murakami and Seiya Okamoto are simply on another level.
50AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:35
They say a body built through weightlifting dulls the fine 'sensors' (your body's feel/sensitivity), and apparently even when he was clearly lacking power in the US, he stubbornly refused to lift.
51AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:37
Dreaming is important. Facing reality is even more important.
54AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:40
Back when he was the cleanup hitter for Team Japan, I really thought he was going to become a great hitter.
55AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:40
Re: #37
That was the only place left for him to go back to lol
56AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:40
Some MLB team's gonna get fooled by that cute face and sign him.
57AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:41
Off he goes again lol
Good luck to him.
64AnonymousOct 29, 2026 02:49
Go get 'em, Tsutsugo! You're the only one who can throw MLB into chaos!
78AnonymousOct 29, 2026 03:06
Re: #64
Fujinami's heading back to the majors too…
75AnonymousOct 29, 2026 03:04
Oh wait, could it be Godzilla's old team? (Hideki Matsui's nickname, i.e. the Giants)
Kind of like how they signed Harimoto back in the Nagashima era.
86AnonymousOct 29, 2026 03:16
Re: #75
The Giants are apparently in on Masataka Yoshida too, so they'll be active on the reinforcement front, but whether they'd want Tsutsugo as a DH or third baseman is questionable.
As a pinch hitter maybe, but it's doubtful Tsutsugo himself would even want that role.

Background and key points of discussion

Foreign FA rights are a system granted separately from domestic FA rights, and exercising them doesn’t necessarily mean signing with an MLB team. In the thread, commenters pointed to the example of Koudai Norimoto, who exercised his foreign FA rights last year and ended up moving to the Yomiuri Giants, suggesting Tsutsugo might likewise move to another NPB team rather than overseas. The original article also listed Tsutsugo’s age as 35, but based on his birth date (November 26, 1991) he is actually 34 — an error that got corrected within the thread. Tsutsugo moved to the Rays in 2020 and returned to DeNA in 2024, and Munetaka Murakami’s success in the majors this season came up repeatedly as a likely backdrop to this latest consideration. At the same time, given Tsutsugo’s past struggles in the majors before returning to Japan, the view that his age makes another run unrealistic remained strong, producing a mix of anticipation and skepticism.
