We Asked Hamamatsu Locals About Their City — 5ch: “Don’t Ask Locals About Business Hotels…”

From our other sites

The story

A thread titled “A Hamamatsu local will answer your questions as best I can,” posted on 5ch’s Live Broadcast board (なんでも実況G), was buzzing with activity. From tourist spots like Fruit Park, Mikatahara, and Nukumori no Mori (“Forest of Warmth”), to the shared consensus that Hamamatsu-style gyoza absolutely needs bean sprouts, to hotel and day-trip hot spring recommendations — locals kept piling on answers only a true resident would know. At the same time, opinions split over whether gyoza filling should be napa cabbage or regular cabbage, and locals even had to double-check each other on how to read “三方原” (Mikatahara) — turning the thread into a window into how differently people relate to their hometown’s famous foods and place names.

Only until midnight at the latest, mind you

Do locals actually go to Fruit Park?
6AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:10

Tulip season there is honestly pretty great
11AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:12
Is Mutsugiku by Hamamatsu Station really the best gyoza spot after all?
16AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:14
Re: #11
Personally I like the light napa-cabbage gyoza
For the heavier cabbage-style stuff, frozen Ajinomoto ones do just fine
Guess it's all down to taste
But yeah, bean sprouts being non-negotiable — agreed
12AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:12
The hot-spring-included lunch buffet at Well Season Hamanako is way too good a deal

Re: #12
Went back when it was around 5000 yen — seriously great value
18AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:14
I'm from Shimizu but I swing by sometimes just to stock up on cheesecake at the Jiichiro outlet store

Still haven't managed to go though
25AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:16
Isn't there some whole Ghibli-looking town tucked away in the mountains?
27AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:16
Re: #25
Ghibli Park?
29AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:17
Re: #25
Yeah, there is
It's Nukumori no Mori ("Forest of Warmth") — there's an admission fee though

Re: #29
Oh, it's "Mikatabara"? Didn't know that
And my keyboard won't even convert it right
35AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:19
Re: #32
It's "Mikatahara," not "Mikatabara"
42AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:21
Re: #39
Minami Ward (basically Higashi Ward)

Re: #42
Near Tenryugawa Station?
I'm a Hamamatsu local too, and these days I even live in the same Chuo Ward, but I've never been anywhere near that area
48AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:24
Re: #46
It's a 10-minute walk
55AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:26
Re: #46
Kyorindo (Chikuya location) in Iida
Dossari in Takihira-cho
Uohiro in Sasagase
Big Fuji

There's plenty of good spots
45AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:22
Seriously, there are people born in Hamamatsu who don't know Nukumori no Mori?
The whole city is covered in Shigeyoshi Sasaki's (the sculptor's) works
49AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:24
Re: #45
I drive down that road in Hanakawa all the time but I've never actually been to Nukumori no Mori
54AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:26
Recommend me a good izakaya near Hamamatsu Station

56AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:26
Which hotel would you recommend?
59AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:28
Re: #56
Grand Mercure Hamanako
Cheap rates, clean rooms, gorgeous food
It's all-inclusive, so it's all-you-can-eat-and-drink your whole stay
60AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:28
Re: #56
Just stay at Act Tower
68AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:32
Went to the Unagi Pie (eel-shaped pastry) factory on my day off
The place was packed with happy young families and stylish couples — did a number on my soul

Never been there!
Never been to the JSDF base either!

Mine's Aozora Kiddo Zero-Ichi
74AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:36
Re: #72
Used to be Santa, but these days Kagetsu or Rairaitei are fine since they're easy to drive to
73AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:36
Re: #59-60
Thanks!
First time hearing about Act Tower
Sounds nice — might not even show up on Jalan

While I'm at it, any good cheap sento/spa besides Hanafukei Shiori?
76AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:39
Re: #73
Try Yufukei Shiori
Huge open-air baths and resting areas
And above all, the food's great
77AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:40
Re: #73
Besides Yufukei Shiori, OYUGIWA Hamamatsu Ichino is popular
Personally I'm partial to SOLA SPA Hamakita Onsen at Sun Street Hamakita
It got downsized and lost its outdoor baths, so it's a bit sad if bathing is your main goal,
but they run a daily rouryu (steam-sauna) service, the cold-plunge bath is outdoors and nice and deep,
and the chill-out "totonoi" space is spacious, which I love
And it's cheap too — only 600 yen
79AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:40
Seriously planning a Hamamatsu trip for the end of the year
Gonna hit up Hamanako Pal Pal (amusement park)
84AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:43
Re: #79
What about the rooftop open-air bath at Sun Royal Hotel?
86AnonymousOct 28, 2026 23:44
Don't ask locals about business hotels… this place is an APA Hotel wasteland

Re: #86
Fair enough
My bad

Background and Talking Points

Hamamatsu-style gyoza is nationally known for its signature look — cabbage filling arranged in a circle with bean sprouts piled in the center — and the city competes with Utsunomiya for the title of Japan’s top gyoza consumption. In the thread, bean sprouts were the one point everyone agreed on, while opinions split over whether the filling should be napa cabbage or regular cabbage, showing that even a dish celebrated as the local “specialty” has quiet variation among locals themselves. The confusion over how to read 三方原 (Mikatahara) — a place name even Hamamatsu residents weren’t all sure how to pronounce or locate — also reflects the reality of a city whose area ballooned through municipal mergers. Tourist spots like Nukumori no Mori showed a similar gap in name recognition among people who grew up there, making clear that simply being a “fellow Hamamatsu resident” doesn’t mean everyone shares the same picture of their own hometown.
