City Mandates Minimum Price for Mulled Wine at Christmas Market

The story

An article reporting that a German city has mandated a minimum price for Glühwein (mulled wine) sold at Christmas market stalls sparked discussion on the German-language board Lemmy c/dach. The regulation appears aimed at preventing a price-cutting war, but the thread split between level-headed takes like “raising the price of 0.2 liters from €1.50 to €2.50 isn’t going to make anyone hesitate,” and joking attempts to find loopholes — “just bring your own thermos or juice carton,” “you can heat it up by plugging an electric kettle into a charging station.” The debate soon spread to whether the price hike would actually be effective at all.

But once it's cold Glühwein in a plastic cup, you can't exactly use the excuse that it's about 'socializing' or 'savoring the drink' anymore.

Just go to the discount supermarket down the street — problem solved. Even if glass bottles get banned, you can just pour it into a plastic bottle from the store.

> If glass bottles get banned
Then just buy the carton (Tetra Pak) version of Glühwein instead.

I mean, Glühwein isn't much fun if it's not hot. Though I guess you could manage it with a portable electric kettle and a power bank.

What does temperature or the type of cup have to do with 'socializing' anyway?

Does anyone actually drink a full liter of Glühwein? That's gotta be too much.

I'd recommend bringing your own hot Glühwein from home in a thermos. Though at this rate, the city might eventually start posting guards to confiscate outside drinks. If that happens, 'pre-drinking' before you even get there is the only option left. Either way, pricing this ridiculous is going to ruin the Christmas market itself. At this point it just feels like getting ripped off.

Honestly, I think this is a borderline case. If the city's regulation raises the price of 0.2 liters of Glühwein from €1.50 to €2.50, then drinking a full liter works out to an extra €5. That's going from €7.50 to €12.50. Honestly, that's not really an amount that's going to seriously make anyone think twice.

I was actually thinking more about the 'extra pour' angle (the shot of liquor they add in).

Pro tip: if you've got the right plug adapter, you can even run an electric kettle off an EV charging station!

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Many German municipalities already ban glass containers at Christmas market stalls or require deposit-based mugs, citing safety and waste concerns. This new minimum-price mandate also appears aimed at curbing quality decline from price-cutting competition and preventing stalls from serving cheap alcohol, though the original article itself doesn’t go into detail on the regulation’s background. The thread split over whether a hike of just a few euros would actually change customers’ behavior — a stream of joking workarounds (bringing your own drinks, cartons, electric kettles) kept coming, while others noted that “the value of gathering around a hot drink as a social occasion” would be diminished. One point readers might easily misread: this isn’t a tax, but a price floor set by the city — it’s not a hike meant to boost municipal revenue.
