Why Dragon Quest IX Gets Called the Worst Game in the Series

From our other sites

The story

Released on the Nintendo DS, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies put adventure-sharing via StreetPass and multiplayer front and center, and at launch it logged some of the best domestic sales in the series’ history. At the same time, opinions on it within the series are sharply divided, and a thread on 5ch’s Nanademo Jikkyou G (a general “let’s-react-live” board) debated the question of why 9 gets called the weakest entry in the series. Many posters pointed to a thin story, characterless party members, and graphics that fell short, while others pushed back by citing the StreetPass experience of the era and praising the supporting cast — making clear that reactions depend heavily on when and how someone played it.

Even the diehard fans can't name a single thing that's actually fun about it — all they've got is sales-figure bragging and "you have no friends" jabs.
Its popularity came mostly from being a DS communication gadget, not from being a solid mainline Dragon Quest game.
Graphics.

Simply put, the story's boring.
It's bad enough that you'd think Horii (the series' creator) handed the script off to a ghostwriter.

Re: #4
Yeah, that's fair.
7 and 8 were decent enough, but I can't even recall what 9's story was about.
65AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:31
Re: #4
By the time you get to 9, aside from the broad outline, it's mostly staff writing it, not Horii himself.
9AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:47
9 only worked because of StreetPass.
31AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:01
Re: #9
That's a big part of it.
As an experience at the time, it was fun.
But as a game, it was boring.
11AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:50
Even the divisive numbered entries still have things people talk about — 9 doesn't have that.
Honestly, you never see a 9 thread get lively.
34AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:03
Re: #11
Things to talk about…
All I can come up with is the tanned fairy… and that "Choo Choo Train" dance bit… that's about it.
13AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:51
What's the reason 7 is supposed to be a bad game?
17AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:54
Re: #13
This is exactly why it's unpopular — fans who randomly start trashing other entries in threads that have nothing to do with them.
14AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:53
I played it in elementary school and had fun with it.
But what I actually enjoyed was the StreetPass stuff and hanging out with friends — playing it now, it's kind of mediocre as a game.

Re: #14
My close friend group was all playing it, so I played it too.
But even back then, I liked 7 and 8, which I'd played before, better.
15AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:53
7 crammed in way too much story — so much that the remake actually cut parts of it.
They should've used that leftover material for 9 instead.
36AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:05
Re: #15
I get that.
But if it moved as briskly as the "Reimagined"-style remake, I feel like they wouldn't have needed to cut any episodes.
21AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:56
It should've come out as a spin-off title.
40AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:08
Re: #21
If 9 and 10 had been spin-offs, they might be rated differently.
22AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:56
The worst part is that nobody feels like going back and playing it now.
45AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:12
Re: #22
I get the occasional urge to replay 1 through 8, and 11, but never 9.
27AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:58
Sounds like it'd be hard to remake.
The graphics were about what you'd expect for a DS game, though.
48AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:15
Re: #27
Without StreetPass it's a pretty hollow game.
Though online infrastructure has come a long way since then, so they could probably build something enjoyable in a different form than StreetPass.
29AnonymousOct 19, 2026 15:59
It was a game you could only enjoy because of the environment at the time.
Don't put out a mainline game that stops being fun just a few years later.
50AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:17
Re: #29
Same goes for me with Dragon Quest in general.
I'd rather a game be complete in itself the moment you buy the cartridge.
33AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:02
My impression is that 9 and 10 drove the fans away, and 11 brought them back by returning to the series' roots.
54AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:23
Re: #33
11 was basically doing the "this — this is exactly what I wanted" thing, right.
41AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:10
You don't get attached to a single character.
There's no story development or content to make up for that.
The graphics are bad.
It's not enjoyable to play years later.

A fair assessment.
66AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:32
Re: #41
It's probably just a certain generation rating it through nostalgia goggles.
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the kind of content that belonged in a Dragon Quest game.
57AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:28
It's only the people who had no friends back then and couldn't get into it who say that.
72AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:36
Re: #57
Sure enough, here comes a fanboy who can only fire off "no friends" jabs, lol.
Nothing lands less than that one when it comes to Dragon Quest 9.
61AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:29
I beat it, and I still can't remember a single thing about it.
89AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:48
Re: #61
Same here — I only remember it if someone brings it up.
I remember most other entries decently well, but 9 barely left a mark.
62AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:30
It was disappointing hearing Horii call 9 a "communication tool."

Like, no — just let it be a game.
78AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:39
Re: #62
Fine if they'd done that as a spin-off or a separate game.
But wasting one of the precious numbered entries on 9 really stings.
76AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:38
I don't think it's fun either, but I like Sandy.
She got bashed back then, but she's a good kid.
79AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:40
Re: #76
In the ending she worried about you so much — it was really cute.
85AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:44
Re: #76
Sandy even made a guest appearance in the DQ8 remake.
As a character, she wasn't bad at all.
81AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:41
The fairy is annoying.
Jokes like the EXILE reference are painfully cringe. (EXILE is a Japanese dance/vocal group DQ9 apparently riffed on)
Stuff like that drags the rating down too.
84AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:43
Re: #81
Tough on the introverts, huh.
87AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:46
It's been said to death already, but man, the scenario…
Maybe Horii had already run dry by this point.
92AnonymousOct 19, 2026 16:51
Re: #87
11 was fun, but it was more of a greatest-hits culmination of past entries.
Still, I'm sure they'll make something good again next time.
112AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:13
Your party members can change their looks and jobs however you want, so you never get attached to any of them.

Meanwhile 3 never had that problem.
113AnonymousOct 19, 2026 17:14
Re: #112
Well obviously having infinite combinations is going to feel completely different from fixed, job-specific looks.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS, Dragon Quest IX sold itself on letting players freely change party members’ appearance and job class, alongside StreetPass-based item trading and rescue features. That was an unusual design choice for the series — while it logged some of the best domestic sales in series history at the time, it draws frequent criticism when measured against more traditional RPG yardsticks like narrative arc and attachment to fixed characters. What split the thread was how to separate those huge sales figures from an assessment of the game itself — opinions diverged over whether to factor in the StreetPass-dependent, platform-specific experience of that era. One point worth noting, though not explicitly raised in the thread’s replies, is that taking high sales at face value as a measure of quality can be misleading.
