GACKT: “They’re Basically Strangers Anyway” — Questioning the Effort Not to Be Disliked

The story

On October 8, GACKT posted on X about “the effort to avoid being disliked.” He wrote that “even as times change, a lot of people are still trapped by this way of thinking and suffering because of it — especially now, with social media having accelerated it,” questioning people who are excessively afraid of being disliked. On the 5ch “Geisoku Sokuho+” thread, opinions split between those agreeing — “not making enemies is easier in the long run,” “you can just keep work relationships strictly business” — and those pushing back, arguing that “this logic only works for someone with power and name recognition; it doesn’t apply to an ordinary office worker.” Partway through, the discussion broadened to touch on the bestseller that preaches a similar idea, “The Courage to Be Disliked” (a book explaining Adlerian psychology).

Musician GACKT updated his X account on the 8th, offering advice to people who behave in ways meant to avoid being disliked.

GACKT posted: “[‘The effort to avoid being disliked’] This has always been a thing, but even as times change, there are a lot of people still trapped by this way of thinking and suffering over it. It’s especially accelerated now that social media has become mainstream. The world is full of people hung up on something this trivial.”

Watching Rei Ranran (annual income of 580 million yen) on YouTube is way more fun than watching Peace-kun at Omiya Park.

If an average employee lives selfishly and then hits middle age, there's no fixing it.
4AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:31
Selfish people get transferred out to the boonies, huh…
5AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:31
You don't need to force people to like you, but there's no need to needlessly make enemies either.
6AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:31
Guys who are only nice to their own inner circle are basically all scum.
66AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:58
Re: #6
So if you don't care about being disliked, like GACKT, then it's not a problem?
7AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:32
In Japanese society, making enemies is more of a hassle.
8AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:32
There are guys like Sato Jiro — easy on themselves, harsh on everyone else… (Sato Jiro: Japanese actor often typecast as this kind of character)

Whether it's a favor or a grudge, people never forget what's been done to them.

America's still stuck on Pearl Harbor, huh…

Re: #10
Plenty of people forget favors, though.
13AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:35
GACKT always whiffs it with these either-or takes.
17AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:37
He only ever says whatever's convenient at the time, so it's not convincing.
He's probably said the exact opposite at some point in the past.
18AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:38
I think this is true. Getting disliked by someone you love or care about is painful, but no damage at all if it's someone who isn't. For work, you can just stick to work talk.

Re: #18
That kind of naive thinking only flies when you're a junior nobody.
23AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:40
Being okay with being disliked doesn't mean it's fine to go around scamming people lol
24AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:40
Ah, so that's why everyone hates him.
25AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:41
There was a guy who got hated even by the people trying their hardest not to be disliked.
27AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:41
Having the mentality to not care about being disliked is fine,
but harassing someone to deliberately make them hate you is a different thing.
28AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:42
Really convincing, coming from the guy who turned a ton of people into enemies with GACKTCoin (the cryptocurrency he backed that drew major criticism).
29AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:42
Normal Japanese people are supposed to be taught to behave so as not to inconvenience others, though.
31AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:42
The Courage to Be Disliked
32AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:42
I don't make an effort not to be disliked, but I don't make an effort to be disliked either.
Saying things you didn't need to say and getting hated for it isn't "the courage to be disliked."
33AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:43
Me? I'm hated by literally everyone lmaooo
36AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:45
If you're powerful like GACKT, you don't need to care.
Ordinary people can't survive if they're disliked.
37AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:45
Well, it's basically sorting people, right?
This one doesn't matter, so treat them like they don't matter; this one's necessary, so actually engage with them.
Just divide people up that way.
42AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:47
Re: #37
The other person probably thinks you don't matter either.

Human nature's roots are the same the world over, huh. Even something like Dazai ends up a bestseller. (Osamu Dazai: Japanese novelist known for dark, angst-ridden works like "No Longer Human")
41AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:47
Makes sense, coming from the guy who betrayed all of Malice Mizer and survived.

"The Courage to Be Disliked" — that's the famous self-help book about Adler, right?

It doesn't matter what other people think of you.
What matters is living your own life.
There's no way to control whether other people end up liking or disliking you.
74AnonymousOct 8, 2026 15:04
People who go on about "the courage to be disliked" always seem like they were already disliked to begin with (just my bias).
83AnonymousOct 8, 2026 15:10
Re: #74
It's always the people who screwed up badly and got disliked for it who talk about "the courage to be disliked."
80AnonymousOct 8, 2026 15:08
So acting in a way that avoids being disliked is bad?
Honestly, I can't tell what he's trying to say.

Re: #80
This world belongs to you.
What's wrong with being selfish?
He's saying: live selfishly.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The book referenced in the thread, “The Courage to Be Disliked,” is a guide co-authored by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga, published by Diamond Inc. in 2013. It’s known for spreading the ideas of Adlerian psychology widely — it ranked high on business-book charts in 2014-2015, sold well in South Korea, and was even adapted into a TV drama on Fuji TV in 2017. GACKT himself faced major criticism in 2022 over his involvement with the cryptocurrency “GACKTCoin,” and the thread brought that up, splitting opinion over whether his own history of relationship friction makes his argument more convincing or less. Another point of debate was that “it’s fine to be disliked” only holds up depending on your position — commenters noted that this logic works for celebrities and people in power, but is hard to apply to an ordinary office worker, for whom cutting ties at work or in the community causes real damage. Abusive language and discriminatory remarks from the thread have been excluded from this article.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisoku Sokuho+) thread “GACKT tells people who act to avoid being disliked, “They’re basically strangers anyway, right?” — passionately makes the case for “the courage to be disliked”.”
