The story
The latest volume 23 of “One-Day Outing Pass: Hanchou,” a spinoff of “Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor,” cracked the top 100 on Amazon Japan’s book sales ranking on September 29, landing at #95. In the original “Kaiji” manga, Squad Leader Otsuka was only prominent through roughly the early part of volume 5, yet the spinoff has already run far longer than his appearances in the main series. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, users debated why a series that’s “basically just about going out to eat” has stayed so popular, with some praising its knack for weaving in topical references and the dynamics between the “black suits” (debt collectors/overseers) and underground laborers, while others argued over the complete absence of any adult-entertainment (“fuuzoku”) storylines.

Ranked #95 in the “Books” category of Amazon Japan’s bestseller list on September 29 was “One-Day Outing Pass: Hanchou (Vol. 23)” (Young Magazine KC Special). It’s the latest volume of the spinoff comic starring Squad Leader Otsuka, a character from Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s “Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor” (Young Magazine Comics).
Hard to believe, but “Hanchou” is already up to volume 23. In the main “Kaiji” story, Squad Leader Otsuka’s heyday only ran through roughly the first half of volume 5 of “Ultimate Survivor.” Going purely by page count, this long-running series has, for Otsuka individually, completely eclipsed his role in the original — and there’s still no sign of it wrapping up. Otsuka really is something else.

Fist of the North Star's 'Strawberry Flavor' spinoff?
Maybe 'Secret Squadron Gorenger — Let's Pretend'?… or maybe not
If the condition is 'different title, same magazine,' apparently it's 'Fighting! Ramenman.'
He started a golf manga and just left that one hanging.
There was like half a year of 'Teiai found him! Hide!', he hid in some Chinese restaurant, and then… I remember it got to 'he got caught after all' but I don't remember the final scene. I feel like it really did end on a half-finished note.
After seeing how far Kaiji himself has fallen, he's got no right to be mad. The 'Runaway' arc was so incomprehensible it's honestly shocking.
Funny how he got so friendly with Otsuka that he ended up on the watch list himself.
That's the one where Ishinomori got bored of Gorenger and it turned into a gag manga — every episode the monster strips Momo Ranger stark naked. It turned into 'Gokko' and started looking like a Go Nagai series.
When you say Dynamic Productions, you think naked women. That hasn't changed one bit, even now.
I feel like it stalled out right around the part where he went to try to persuade the old lady.
'Tonegawa' is basically limited to office-worker relatable humor among the black suits and stories about the Chairman's hardships, but Hanchou has both the underground debtors and the black suits to work with, so it's easier to weave in current events and do all sorts of things.
Aren't you mixing that up with the Nikaidou golf series? I don't remember any Chinese restaurant showing up. I think right now it's actually on hiatus right after he ate some youkan (sweet bean jelly).
Ah… yeah, maybe that's right, thanks.
Re: #42
Maybe 'Chinese restaurant' was a bad way to put it. Wasn't there a scene where he tries to wait it out by eating at some ramen shop in a shopping mall or something?
Mario hides out in a Chinese restaurant inside a department store and escapes.
A month of forced underground labor earns 90,000 pelika.
What a ridiculous setup for a manga.
520,000 pelika a month goes to paying off the debt. That's 52,000 yen.
Unlike Kaiji, I don't think 'Gin to Kin' is coming back. If anything, 'Zero' has better odds of resuming.
Even on 5ch, food threads get pretty lively. Everyone loves that topic.
Yeah, 'Ichijou' was boring. A high-school-grad part-timer protagonist just doesn't give the story much room to grow.
The part where he gradually gets closer with that annoying Kansai guy from his part-time job was good, though.
Otsuka in Hanchou uses that expensive one-day outing pass — the one Kaiji desperately fought to get — all the time. Most of his outings aren't even for getting supplies, just for relaxing. Wouldn't it make more sense to save up the pelika, pay off his debt to Teiai, and become free? Or can pelika not actually be used to pay off Teiai debt?
Pelika can be converted into Japanese yen. Kaiji beats Otsuka, takes all his pelika, converts it to yen, and uses it to take on 'The Swamp.'
Sure, no sex-work episode makes sense, but they could at least do a hostess-club episode.
Judging by the comments on MangaPoke, there seem to be quite a lot of female readers… they're probably too scared of losing them to go there.
Because he can write off his golf expenses as 'research.'
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
“One-Day Outing Pass: Hanchou” is a spinoff centered on Squad Leader Otsuka of the Teiai Group, a character from Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s “Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor.” It carries over the series’ “pelika” debt-currency system and forced underground labor setting while depicting Otsuka’s daily life using his one-day outing pass to go eat around town. Opinion in the thread was split over the “Ichijou” spinoff, another Fukumoto-derived series — some called it boring, while others praised the relationship with the annoying Kansai guy from his part-time job. There was also debate about the near-total absence of sexual content across the Kaiji franchise, with some speculating — based on comments on the MangaPoke app — that the readership skews heavily female, making the creators reluctant to change direction. One easy point of confusion: the claim that Hanchou has “eclipsed the main Kaiji series” refers not to total volume counts across both series, but specifically to how long Otsuka appeared in the main story versus the spinoff.
