Ocarina of Time Remake vs. GTA6: Amazon Sales Rankings Split by Country

From our other sites

The story

A comparison of country-by-country Amazon bestseller rankings for the “Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” remake and “Grand Theft Auto VI” set off a lively debate on 5ch’s hardware/industry (geha) board. According to the posted figures, Ocarina of Time sits at No. 5 and GTA6 at No. 30 in the US, and Ocarina of Time leads at No. 2 in Japan — but in the UK and Germany, GTA6 comes out ahead, with results varying wildly by country. Some pointed out that differences in digital-download ratios and the timing of when sales get reflected in the rankings might explain the gap, and the thread split over which title could really be called the winner.

What are we gonna do about this…

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
4AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:34
Guess it was just a lame remake after all
7AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:35
Why did the 🐷 (derogatory slang for Switch fans) even pick this fight?
8AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:35
Pigs (slang for Switch fans) really don't buy games, lmaooo
11AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:36
What kind of mainline numbered entry gets excited about beating a remake?

Re: #11
The 🐷 started this story, didn't they?

Bring us a new Zelda game.
Bring it next year, seriously.
16AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:38
A killer title losing to a mere code-in-a-box 😭

Re: #1
I checked, and in the US it's Ocarina of Time at No. 5, GTA at No. 30 (´・ω・`)

Re: #17
Ocarina of Time is insane
Still No. 5 a whole month later?
GTA peaked at No. 5 and dropped out fast

Re: #17
The only places GTA is competing with or beating Ocarina of Time on the Amazon ranking are the UK and developing countries — that's the usual pattern
Also, on an online-only retailer like Amazon, a code-in-a-box format isn't really at a disadvantage, since only customers who already have an internet connection shop there
At brick-and-mortar stores, a lot more customers have weak internet access, so the situation's different

Which country's ranking is this?

In the US
Zelda's at No. 5
GTA6's at No. 30
so Zelda's crushing it

Re: #30
Probably the UK
The UK's numbers are always weak like this
Apparently Switch titles take over a week longer to show up in the rankings there than in the rest of Europe

At least on US Amazon, Ocarina of Time is clearly outselling it

Re: #30
Yeah, it's the UK
Well, GTA better win at least there

Re: #1
France: Ocarina of Time No. 2, Wolverine No. 12, Fire Emblem No. 23, GTA (not sold)
UK: GTA No. 10, Ocarina of Time No. 11, Wolverine No. 15, Fire Emblem No. 36
Germany: Ocarina of Time No. 6, GTA No. 9
Spain: Ocarina of Time No. 4, GTA No. 19, Wolverine No. 22, Fire Emblem No. 33

Re: #38
Lol, GTA6's losing
Can't even make excuses since they launched at the same time

Re: #38
Outside the UK it's not even close
What's even going on in France?

Quit kicking it while it's down

Who knew Nintendo's flagship title would flop this hard
Maybe the Switch 2 really is in trouble
43AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:57
Re: #41
Are you saying GTA6, which is neck-and-neck with it, is also a flop?
42AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:56
There's no way Zelda beats a game that's going to sell in the hundreds of millions
Switch 2's install base doesn't even reach that scale to begin with
46AnonymousOct 3, 2026 18:58
Re: #42
GTA6 is supposed to sell 50 million on day one, and it's struggling to keep pace with a Zelda title whose ceiling is like 30 million total — is that really okay?
70AnonymousOct 3, 2026 19:19
The code-in-a-box version of GTA6 is such a niche thing that basically no normal person buys it…
80AnonymousOct 3, 2026 19:28
Re: #70
Uh, hold on—
weren't you guys just bragging about 50 million in the first week?

Well, once it actually launches, GTA outselling Ocarina of Time eventually is a given, so there's no need to start weird threads over it, is there?

Re: #97
"Eventually," lol
A once-in-13-years, $2 billion-budget blockbuster, and the best you've got is "it'll eventually outsell a mere remake"?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Amazon’s “bestseller ranking” is a snapshot of pre-order and purchase activity at a given moment — not a measure of actual units sold. As pointed out in the thread, Switch titles tend to have a high ratio of digital downloads, and the timing of when sales get reflected in the rankings differs by country, which is why a region like the UK can see its ranking diverge from what’s actually happening in stores. GTA6 is a blockbuster that, as of a July 2026 market survey, was forecast to sell on the order of 50 million units in its first week alone — which makes judging it purely by a momentary Amazon ranking a somewhat lopsided comparison to begin with. The thread’s disagreement came down to the fact that some countries, like the US and Japan, favored Ocarina of Time, while others, like the UK and Germany, favored GTA6 — so the conclusion changes entirely depending on whose numbers you take as the baseline. It’s not really a topic that can be settled with a simple “who won.”
