Woman Baffled Her Picnic Date Has No Car — 5ch: “It’s Like Taking the JR Train to Adventure World”

The story

A post went viral online after a woman said she was put off when she learned that the man she’d met on a dating app — who had invited her on a picnic date to Hakone — didn’t own a car. The post was picked up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, where opinions split over whether a car is really necessary for a picnic. Some argued you can easily reach Hakone by train or the Romancecar, while others countered that a car makes more sense for comfort and carrying gear, and the debate spread into the question of who should be responsible for transportation on a date — the man or the woman.

■ The man who asked me on a picnic date doesn’t have a “car” — I was so put off…

A man I met on a dating app invited me on a picnic date the other day.

We ended up planning to go to Hakone.

Well, naturally — even little Miss Picnic wants to ride in a car.
6AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:44
Turns out fun picnics were never a thing.
7AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:44
Someone with this mentality was never going on a picnic anyway lol
8AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:44
Dishes and chairs for a picnic? Isn't it basically just a bento, some drinks, and a blanket?
14AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:45
Re: #8
What, you planning to grill up some Mongolian mutton (jingisukan) out there?
21AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:50
Re: #8
Sounds like your only picnic experience is a kid's school field trip.
9AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:44
A demon wearing the skin of "Picnic Girl" vs. a case of mild intellectual disability
13AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:45
Day-camping and picnicking are not the same thing.
18AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:48
Re: #16
Just take the Tokyo Metro to your picnic then, why don't you?
19AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:49
A picnic in Hakone doesn't even make sense to begin with — this whole story is absurd.

Re: #14
Probably what "the woman" (mansan, 5ch slang for women) was picturing is more like day-camping. The guy (chinsan, 5ch slang for men) probably just meant a light hike — backpack with a bento, drinks, and a blanket, eat lunch wherever the view's nice.

Tons of people take the train to places like Mt. Takao, you know.
25AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:52
Taking the train on a date to Hakone or Atami is, unfortunately, totally normal.
26AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:53
These days driving is supposed to be the woman's job, right? Don't get ahead of yourself.
27AnonymousOct 3, 2026 11:53
In Osaka terms, it's like taking the JR train to Adventure World (a zoo way out in Wakayama) — no question that's unusual.
53AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:18
Can't really help this one, it comes down to upbringing. Probably grew up in a household with no car that used trains for everything.
62AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:26
Re: #53
Nah, if you had even a bit of a social circle you'd know this is weird. Are you a total loner?
58AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:23
Going from Yokohama to Hakone, you'd normally just take the train — the Romancecar, for instance. That last insult pretty much confirms this is bait.
69AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:36
Re: #58
You wouldn't go from Yokohama Station via the Odakyu line — you'd take the Tokaido Line to Odawara. Either way, no one would bother with something that convoluted for a day trip.
75AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:47
A post written almost as if it were engineered to provoke woman-bashing.
89AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:57
Re: #75
Lol, so provoking woman-bashing is bad, but man-bashing is totally fine?
76AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:48
There are a ton of people in this thread saying a train picnic is unthinkable — seriously, what's that about? I genuinely don't get it.
80AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:51
Re: #76
Taking trains and buses for a day trip is just a hassle, isn't it?
88AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:57
Re: #80
Just riding a train is way easier than driving an hour from Yokohama to Hakone. Makes no sense to me.
90AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:58
Re: #80
Tourist spots are packed anyway — the train's the easier option.
92AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:00
Taking the train with all your picnic stuff? Come on, you guys can't be serious… ugh…
93AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:01
Re: #92
What kind of huge luggage are you even bringing to a picnic…? Are you going mountain climbing or something?
96AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:03
Re: #92
What's there to carry for a picnic besides a blanket and some food?
94AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:01
Re: #88
Part of the fun is stopping at a good restaurant along the way in the car and talking in your own little bubble together. What a stingy way to look at it.
95AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:02
Re: #94
It's really just that either way is fine. At the very least, it's absolutely not "unthinkable" the way this woman makes it sound. And telling someone who doesn't own a car and doesn't normally drive to suddenly drive for an hour is harsh too.
100AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:07
Re: #95
I mean, her reaction is basically "ugh, what a pain." Her mood just dropped. I get the feeling, honestly.
109AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:10
Re: #100
If anyone's dealing with a hassle here, it's the guy — since when did it become a given that the man drives two hours round trip?
101AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:08
If you're driving, you wouldn't arrange to meet at Yokohama Station.
103AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:09
Re: #101
True, where would you even park?
102AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:08
On the way back, she probably wants to be dropped off right at her door too. If you've only ever dated guys who do all that, this must be a letdown.
107AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:10
Re: #102
If that's the standard, wouldn't he pick her up from home on the way there too? Meeting at the station in the first place suggests they'd probably just part ways there as well.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The original post came from the anonymous diary site anond.hatelabo.jp, and it’s a familiar pattern for a personal story like this to spread on 5ch along with a mix of support and backlash. Hakone is a destination reachable by train from central Tokyo or Yokohama via the Odakyu Romancecar or the Tokaido Line, so the thread saw “you can get there fine without a car” collide head-on with “a car is more comfortable for a date.” Underlying the debate is disagreement over whether driving and arranging transportation should be seen as the man’s role, along with the broader dynamic in dating-app matchmaking where owning a car can become a yardstick men get judged by. At the same time, some replies mocked the post using language tied to discrimination against people with disabilities — this article excludes those comments.
