Fans call for Persona 1 & 2 remasters, but 5ch says “half of it’s basically a bad game”

The story

A topic buzzed on 5ch’s Livegalileo (general live-commentary) board after reports surfaced that the studio behind the Persona series believes it should remaster or remake the original ‘Persona’ and ‘Persona 2.’ Both games are praised for their scenarios, but their dungeon difficulty and random-encounter systems are frequently blasted as “bad game design,” and posters also pointed out that swapping in new music for the PSP remaster became a real obstacle to further ports. The thread mixed genuine affection for these classics with harsh judgment of their gameplay systems.

Starting up a project would be tough, but I'd love to make it happen.

Do Persona 1 and 2 have happy endings?
58AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:40
Re: #8
In 1, both the Sebek route and the Snow Queen route have happy and bad endings.
2 ends on a bittersweet note that leaves you conflicted.
10AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:20
1 and 2 get treated like classics, but aren't they basically half bad-game?
12AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:21
Re: #10
The scenario's great, but as a game… honestly, eh.
28AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:26
Re: #10
No way around it, 1 is a bad game lol
14AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:21
They failed with the PSP version, so I doubt they'll ever make one.
21AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:24
Re: #14
If they hadn't done that baffling thing where they replaced the entire soundtrack with new music in the PSP version of 1, it might've ended up on Steam like P3P.
94AnonymousSep 20, 2026 21:12
Re: #14
All three PSP versions were directed by Shoji Meguro, who has since left the company.
22AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:25
Just merge 1 and 2 into a single game with modern controls and visuals, please.
60AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:41
Re: #22
Merging 1 and 2 feels like a tall order honestly — plenty of people loved 1 but couldn't stand 2.
25AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:26
Does anyone actually want the calendar system back?
33AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:28
Re: #25
If you scrap the calendar, you'd have to scrap the Social Links too, and at that point it's not really a post-3 Persona game anymore — is that really what people want?
34AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:29
I don't think the scenarios in 1 and 2 would land with people today.
37AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:30
Re: #34
Even in the Reiwa era, Nanjo's just too cool for that to matter.
35AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:29
Why did they ever get rid of the conversation system?
39AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:31
Re: #35
That's what Megami Tensei is for.
46AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:34
Metaphor was great early on with how mercilessly people would just die, doing stuff Persona could never pull off — but it got softer and softer as it went.
53AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:37
Re: #46
Metaphor's very early hours were great, but pretty early on you started going "wait, is this really it?" By the end it just felt like Persona with the IP swapped out.
48AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:34
1 is a brutal dungeon crawler — no way today's gamers could handle a remaster of that.
59AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:41
Re: #48
Save-anywhere, but a wipeout sends you back to before the battle with the enemy getting first strike guaranteed. I bet they'll soften that a ton.
50AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:36
Isn't the PSP version just awful? You don't mess with the BGM like that.
52AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:37
Re: #50
Just when I thought I'd finally get to hear the Persona-awakening and mid-boss themes on proper audio…
62AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:42
For the Maki chapter, let us drop that monkey character Mark.
65AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:45
Re: #62
But without Mark you can't give Goh-Tenno its Latent ability revival — that'd be a real problem. And in negotiations, Mark's the second-most useful after Nanjo.
66AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:46
Re: #59
These days, getting wiped out by an enemy's first strike with no way to react is a guaranteed "bad game" complaint.
71AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:49
Re: #66
Symbol encounters would be one thing, but with random encounters it's rough. Even V ended up going with symbol encounters in the end.
70AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:48
Looking through used games, there are a ton of Persona and Megami Tensei titles out there.
76AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:53
Re: #70
The series goes all the way back to the Famicom era, so once you count every spinoff there's a mountain of them.
74AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:52
Honestly, isn't Persona kind of unremarkable except for 4? 4's just too good.
78AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:53
Re: #74
Yeah, 4 on top, then 5, then 3. Without nostalgia goggles, 1 and 2 are pretty middling.
106AnonymousSep 20, 2026 21:26
Re: #74
I got into the series with 3, so 3 has the strongest nostalgia pull for me — the ending after that final-boss sequence is 3 by a mile.
79AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:53
Come to think of it, didn't Atlus have an old first-person action game with Kazuma Kaneko art?
82AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:55
Re: #79
You mean Majin Tensei… no wait, Maken Shao?
83AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:55
It's sad Philemon stopped appearing after P3. Shouldn't the master of the Velvet Room be Philemon, not Igor — or Nyarlathotep?
86AnonymousSep 20, 2026 21:00
Re: #83
Wasn't it something like, after Nemesis (Judgement), he was satisfied and just left the rest to Igor?
87AnonymousSep 20, 2026 21:00
Maybe it's time to make Kitaro — who's been missing this whole time — the new guide.
91AnonymousSep 20, 2026 21:08
Re: #87
Give it up. He's dead already.
89AnonymousSep 20, 2026 21:05
3 got remade really well, didn't it?
93AnonymousSep 20, 2026 21:11
Re: #89
– The cut-ins when you exploit a weakness
– The illustration after an All-Out Attack
– The battle UI
Going by the 4R trailer, it looks kind of underwhelming next to 3R, so I'm a bit worried.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The ‘Persona’ series has been a beloved RPG franchise since the original launched in 1996, and from the third entry onward it settled into its now-signature format combining a calendar-based school-life sim with dungeon exploration. The earlier games, 1 and 2, still carry the hallmarks of old-school RPG design — first-person dungeon crawling, random encounters — and despite being praised for their scenarios, they’ve long been flagged as difficult to actually play. A PSP port was released in the past, but replacing the soundtrack with new music proved controversial and kept it from getting a Steam release the way the later P3P did. Shoji Meguro, who directed those PSP versions, has since left Atlus. The thread shows both anticipation for a possible remaster and real concern over whether old-school elements like random encounters and full restarts after a party wipe would fly with modern gamers — making this less a simple wave of nostalgia and more a grounded debate about feasibility.
