Juice=Juice’s Kohaku Bid Sparks Debate on X, Splits Opinion on 5ch’s Hello! Project Board

The story

Speculation spread on X that Hello! Project group Juice=Juice might appear on NHK’s year-end Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Song Battle), sparking debate on 5ch’s Hello! Project board as well. Hello! Project hasn’t appeared on Kohaku since the 2007 “Hello! Project 10th Anniversary Kohaku Special Squad,” a 19-year absence. Thread posters clashed over whether Juice=Juice’s streaming numbers and Billboard Japan Hot 100 performance fall short compared to groups that have already appeared on Kohaku — CUTIE STREET, FRUITS ZIPPER, and =LOVE — versus those defending the group based on their songs and music-show track record.

Got owned in the debate and now they're just chanting nonsense lolololololololol
@(Calm Otaku A)
You don't actually have numbers solid enough to call it "confirmed," do you?
3AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:04
For CUTIE STREET it's all "beat =LOVE and FRUITS ZIPPER and fill the National Stadium" holier-than-thou talk, but somehow that bar doesn't apply to Juice=Juice
4AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:05
Can't be bothered to read all that
5AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:06
Feels like both sides are just an echo chamber here
7AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:07
Honestly I don't mind Hello! Project fans like this lol
8AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:08
It's kind of lovely that people can get this fired up about a Kohaku spot
9AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:09
nt, Daikon Salad, and wa-nin are all just trolls posing as fans (narioota) — ignore them
10AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:09
To sum it up:

CUTIE STREET can't get in unless they beat FRUITS ZIPPER and =LOVE
Juice=Juice sings better than FRUITS ZIPPER and =LOVE, so they should get in
11AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:10
It's not favoritism — Juice=Juice just makes you want to favor them 😏
12AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:11
Before they even worry about =LOVE, they need to beat ≠ME (NOIMI) first
13AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:11
Hello! Project's last NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen appearance was the 58th Kohaku in 2007
as the "Hello! Project 10th Anniversary Kohaku Special Squad"

"They get in because they sing well" lolololololololololololololololol
16AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:12
If Juice=Juice gets picked, it'll be Hello! Project's first appearance in 19 years
2007 → 2026
Hello! Project's comeback — a genuine feat

Sure, Juju's "Morezuri" clip (a flattering-photo/selfie trend) is going viral, but their streaming still falls way short of last year's Kawa-Lab and this year's =LOVE (and even CUTIE STREET, who's in that same ballpark, still didn't make Kohaku). In terms of turnout, they obviously can't touch Nogizaka, let alone =LOVE or FRUITS ZIPPER. Putting them in the same league as those two groups is way too much blind favoritism.

@(Blind Otaku)
Wrong. It's not favoritism — Juice=Juice just makes you want to favor them.

That's some next-level blind favoritism lol

This thread has basically every reason people dislike Hello! Project packed into one place
25AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:15
Looks like fun
No matter how hard you all argue, it's the NHK bigwigs who actually decide anyway
26AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:17
Cringe watching all these tone-deaf middle-aged otaku embarrass themselves in here
27AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:17
Turns out these losers who kept saying "I don't even watch TV anymore"
can't stop obsessing over the year-end Kohaku after all lol
Good to know
29AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:17
Well, Juice=Juice's Kohaku spot is basically locked in, so you might as well act more confident about it
30AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:17
Re: #1
You're pretty sketchy yourself for monitoring this thread this closely lol
32AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:20
Kohaku really is something special to Japanese people
Anyone who says "who cares about Kohaku" basically isn't Japanese
Seriously, NHK's Kohaku has run for half a century — it's THE year-end tradition of postwar Japan
33AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:20
Blindly worshipping one specific metric isn't exactly "calm and rational," is it lol
34AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:20
I haven't watched Kohaku in decades anyway, so I'm not planning to watch even if they're on
I can't even name a single idol group that was on last year's show
35AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:20
According to insiders on "Ohkami" (an old-school idol-fan messageboard known for early scoops), it was already locked in back in August, so arguing about it is pointless
36AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:20
Kohaku's on a completely different level from just some regular music show
38AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:21
Getting on Kohaku is worth about as much as a National Honor Award
46AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:24
It's obvious the people trashing Kohaku are just fans of some scrub group that'll never get on it themselves
58AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:28
Re: #46
That's Juice=Juice for you lol
47AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:25
@"Calm"? Otaku lol
You say "if they can't get in with this, no one can," but their Billboard Japan Hot 100 performance isn't even in that conversation, and their streaming numbers aren't growing either. They do get booked on music shows for their talent and good songs, but back in 2025 CUTIE STREET put up numbers on par with the #1 spot and still didn't make Kohaku — so it's really not "if they can't get in with this, no one can."

Re: #47
>They do get booked on music shows for their talent and good songs

More like they got lucky invites just because they're not doing the oversaturated "cute" concept everyone else is running lol
48AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:26
I'm a Juice=Juice fan but I need everyone to calm down for a second
The next year decides whether they end up like =LOVE or like Tokimeki Sendenbu — this year doesn't even matter
50AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:27
Re: #48
They won't become either
More like the DA PUMP route (the group famous for a surprise late-career comeback hit after years of low profile)
66AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:29
Re: #48
Might be bait, but whether they make Kohaku this year or not is night-and-day for how things go from here
71AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:29
CANDY TUNE's fan-favorite track is blowing up on X
Would love to see it performed at Kohaku
92AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:31
Re: #71
Have you heard CANDY TUNE sing live? It's unbearable — there's zero unison, no harmony blend at all
93AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:31
Re: #71
Can you really call it "going viral" when it's mostly a storm of harsh backlash?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen airs on New Year’s Eve, and an appearance is considered to carry special significance for any artist. Hello! Project’s last Kohaku appearance was the “10th Anniversary Kohaku Special Squad” in 2007, meaning the group has been absent for 19 years since. The thread’s core divide is between those who argue, based on Juice=Juice’s streaming numbers and Billboard Japan Hot 100 performance, that the group hasn’t yet met the bar, and those who expect an appearance based on the strength of their songs and their track record on music shows. One post claims their spot was “already locked in back in August,” but it’s worth noting this is presented in the unverified-insider-info style typical of 5ch and is not an official announcement. CUTIE STREET and FRUITS ZIPPER also come up as points of comparison — both are themselves relatively newly formed groups, suggesting that the question of who gets to appear on Kohaku is a live debate across the idol industry right now.
