Baseball Legend Isao Harimoto Dies — Fond Memories Pour In, 5ch: ‘The Guy Was Truly Respected’

From our other sites

The story

Following the death of former professional baseball player and longtime commentator Isao Harimoto (known by his nickname “Harry”), a thread on 5ch filled up with story after story from his life. One recounts how, during the season Shohei Ohtani was chasing the home run title, Harimoto deliberately avoided watching games on TV at night, instead learning the results from the next morning’s newspaper and beaming with joy. Another recalls how he personally lobbied the Lotte manager at the time to give playing time to a then-minor-leaguer named Hiromitsu Ochiai, having spotted his talent early. Alongside these, posters also revisited darker chapters — the discrimination he faced as an ethnic Korean in Japan, and his outdated remarks about women’s boxing — painting a fuller picture of both the light and shadow in his life.

What people said

The guy really was well-liked, huh
5AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:14
Maybe about as mild as a green chili pepper?
51AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:41
Re: #5
That one's on Nomura, lol
10AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:17
Apparently during the season Ohtani was fighting for the home run title, he didn't watch TV at night at all.
He'd find out about the home runs from the newspaper the next morning and his eyes would light up with joy.

He said he felt ashamed for once insisting Ohtani should focus purely on pitching.

Re: #10
If he'd lived just a few more years, his view might've changed even more 😢
61AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:43
Re: #10
Most MLB games are played in the morning Japan time anyway, so what's that even supposed to mean?
19AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:22
Stories about the racism Harry faced come up a lot
36AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:34
Re: #19
Yeah, back in the day he got seriously discriminated against on this internet forum called '2channel.' (5ch's predecessor)
24AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:24
Normally you wouldn't jump for joy like that over someone else's home run
30AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:26
Re: #24
Just from that jump alone you can tell his athleticism was insane
37AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:34
I loved how Harry would watch some dangerous sport and just bluntly go, 'Why would anyone do this? Isn't this dangerous?'
38AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:35
Re: #37
More like 'What's even fun about this?' right?
46AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:39
Harry: "You should really quit now."

Harry graduates from Sunday Morning (leaves the show)

Kazuyoshi Miura: "Thank you for your tough love all these years, Mr. Harimoto! Great work!!"

Harry: "☺"

Re: #46
Lol, turns out Harry was the one who ended up quitting
53AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:41
Wasn't it Harry who went straight to the Lotte manager back then and said, 'There's an amazing guy named Ochiai in the minors, you should use him'?
58AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:43
Re: #53
Yeah, that's right
That's why the two of them are close
55AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:42
Re: #49
Well, if he'd focused on just one, being the best in the world would've been a breeze, so it can't be helped
63AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:44
Re: #55
Whether it'd really be a 'breeze' aside, the possibility was there — and more importantly, doing both definitely shortens a player's career
67AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:44
Looking at these baseball alumni, the ones who act arrogant or seem to have bad personalities tend to be the guys who had mediocre stats during their playing days…
74AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:46
Re: #67
Why's Kanemura so full of himself?
Looking at his stats, he really wasn't that great a player
75AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:47
Re: #67
Probably bluffing because he's insecure
77AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:47
Maybe in 20 years it'll be Darvish who fills Harry's role?
Can't think of anyone else with that 'outspoken commentator' vibe
79AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:48
Re: #77
Isn't that more like TBS pushing some political-correctness narrative? Doesn't really fit Darvish
81AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:49
Re: #77
Darvish's kind of lacking in charm though
84AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:50
Re: #77
There's Uehara though
He's got S-tier natural talent for it
82AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:49
Harry really felt like everyone's grandpa
Same with Kin-yan — even doing the whole 'out-of-touch old man' shtick, that smile just makes you go 'aww'
83AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:50
Re: #82
He was never really an unlikable guy to begin with
88AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:52
Re: #84
The 'jealous-of-Ohtani old man' bit is a no-go though
89AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:53
Re: #88
Harry was the 'jealous-of-Nomura old man' too, so it evens out
90AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:53
Re: #89
Green chili pepper lol
91AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:53
Harimoto: "Young unmarried girls trading punches in a boxing ring? Unthinkable."

Well, I guess that tracks with the values of Harry's generation
95AnonymousSep 19, 2026 11:56
Re: #91
Honestly, thinking about it normally, I'd say don't do it either
102AnonymousSep 19, 2026 12:04
Pulling off the 'out-of-touch old man' act actually takes real tact and smarts
103AnonymousSep 19, 2026 12:06
Re: #102
Because if people genuinely hate you, it's game over

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Isao Harimoto was long known for his blunt, unfiltered commentary on a signature segment of the TV show “Sunday Morning,” and his opinions — sometimes seen as reflecting a generational divide — often stirred controversy. The anecdotes shared in this thread about Shohei Ohtani, Hiromitsu Ochiai, and Kazuyoshi Miura were received warmly, revealing a side of him at odds with his image as a stubborn, out-of-touch old-timer. At the same time, posters also revisited the discrimination he faced throughout his playing career as someone with roots in the Korean peninsula, with some weighing his remarks and attitudes not just as a heartwarming story, but in light of the era he came from. Public opinion of a well-known figure tends to swing favorable right after their death, and this thread is a textbook example of that pattern.
