‘KEMURI’ Developer UNSEEN Loses 7 Staff — Wave of Lead-Level Departures — 5ch: “This studio is done for”

The story

Overseas media report that at least seven developers have left UNSEEN, the studio developing the new action game ‘KEMURI,’ since the start of 2026. Those who departed were almost all senior staff — lead game designers, directors, and senior-level designers — a heavy blow for a small studio said to number only a few dozen people. On 5ch, many posters pointed to a controversial video in which the company reportedly said something to the effect of “people die if we port to Xbox” as the backdrop for the exodus, with discussion turning to worries about the company’s management and whether its PS5-exclusive strategy can hold up.

What people said

So this is why they looked so haggard in that video
5AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:43
Game development's tough, huh
Guess porting work nearly kills you?
Honestly, probably better off that they quit
8AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:44
Re: #5
I think that was more like 'the game won't sell on Xbox so we can't make a living,' right?
15AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:47
Re: #5
Ah, the part where they said porting would kill them so they won't release on Xbox! lol
Forget porting, sounds like the company itself is just a black company (exploitative workplace) lol, this is hilarious
7AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:44
When your company only has a few dozen people, losing 7 is brutal
And they're all senior people too
10AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:45
>Their titles were Lead Game Designer, Lead Level Designer, Senior Level Designer, Lead Gameplay Engineer, Lead Engineer, Animation Director, Senior Gameplay Animator

This studio is done for
14AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:46
Re: #10
At this point the ones who left might as well be the real studio
25AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:50
Re: #10
These people should just start their own company and go multiplatform instead of PS-only
39AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:56
Re: #10
Wait, this many left a 40-person studio?
Even if it were 7 junior staff that'd be rough, but this looks like the end
17AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:48
So this is the studio where porting to Xbox supposedly kills people
18AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:49
The voice cast is stacked, so Sony's probably footing the bill
19AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:49
Funny how the Sony loyalists keep dropping like flies one after another
Meanwhile Kojima (Kojikan) seems to have been saved by Xbox
20AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:49
Probably because the company's in trouble, they filmed and uploaded a video trashing Xbox themselves to show their loyalty (to Sony)

But the result was just advertising that their management can't even choose their words properly, exposing a lack of qualification as executives
21AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:49
Wait, is it PS5-exclusive?? There's no way it can win like that
No wonder people are jumping ship
62AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:06
Re: #21
It's also coming to PC
27AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:52
She herself quit as director partway through Ghostwire: Tokyo and left Tango too
28AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:52
Oh, this is the game the PlayStation fanboys were hyping up
What are the PlayStation fanboys gonna do now
29AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:52
Apparently they're buddies with YouTubers who make a living milking Disney and Concord content
They'll probably get cut loose by Sony eventually too
31AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:53
Basing your whole business around PlayStation is a guaranteed loss at this point
35AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:55
Ikumi Nakamura threw in the towel on Ghostwire partway through and quit Tango, remember
Guess it's karma that the same thing is happening now that she's the one running a company
36AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:55
At this rate, whatever game does come out is bound to feel unfinished
37AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:56
Maybe they've got problems that have nothing to do with Xbox
38AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:56
If that's the case, maybe the comment was a last-ditch attempt to save a dying studio
Talking about wanting to go PlayStation-first
There was that overseas company that put out two pieces of shovelware doing the same thing
45AnonymousSep 18, 2026 13:59
When they said stuff like "people die making it for Xbox"
you could hear staff in the background laughing mockingly
That interview was clearly staged as a smear campaign
49AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:01
Re: #45
And they filmed it themselves, too
Basically brown-nosing up to SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment), begging for favors in the name of loyalty

No wonder any decent creator would walk out
50AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:01
Re: #45
That laughter was genuinely unpleasant
The kind of laugh you'd hear from a Fuji TV employee on a Tunnels (Tonneruzu) show
55AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:03
Re: #49
If that's really why they put the video out
I'd love to know how they felt the following week when word got out that Kojima got dropped by SIE and was heading to Xbox
57AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:04
Re: #55
LMAO that's way too funny 🤣
58AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:04
If it's a Japanese publisher I get not wanting to release on the 'crap box' (derogatory nickname for Xbox), but even knowing that, you shouldn't say it out loud
60AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:05
Re: #58
Can't relate to that feeling, but it's true the loyalists keep dropping like flies
66AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:08
Re: #58
Realistically though, it's PlayStation that publishers are leaving
Kojima was pissed off about it too, wasn't he?
59AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:05
Even if they manage to finish this online game, can they actually keep up with updates afterward?
When you get a mass exodus like this all at once, unless it's unpaid wages, it's usually because the team has fallen apart
64AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:06
Re: #59
If they keep saying 'people die,' that's scary — good luck getting bug reports out of them
69AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:09
If this is how Mikami's former subordinate is acting, Mikami himself must have found it pretty humiliating when Microsoft bought Tango Gameworks
Sounds like Mikami's new game after going independent will probably snub Xbox too
71AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:11
Re: #69
lol the logic there makes no sense at all
80AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:15
So is this a case where, if anyone's going to 'die,' it's because of your own poor planning — and that's why the staff bailed?
93AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:19
Re: #80
Staff started leaving in droves right after they announced PS5 exclusivity at the State of Play, so maybe so lol
97AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:21
Funny how they conveniently have enough staff to port to PC but somehow not enough for Xbox

I don't want to play a game made by liars
102AnonymousSep 18, 2026 14:23
Re: #97
There are plenty of games that release on PC and Switch but skip both PS and Xbox, so maybe it's the same reason as those

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

UNSEEN is the studio founded by Ikumi Nakamura, who served as director on ‘Ghostwire: Tokyo’ at Tango Gameworks, after she left the company; ‘KEMURI’ is its first title. The departure count cited here was independently compiled by the source, gamestalk.net, and the company itself has not officially explained the reasons behind the exits. On the thread, posters repeatedly pointed to backlash over an interview video touching on Xbox porting as an underlying cause of the departures, but this is purely speculation on 5ch’s part, and no causal link between the two has been confirmed. It’s generally understood in the industry that when leads and directors leave in quick succession from a studio of only a few dozen people, it tends to affect a project’s progress and quality, and many posters voiced concern along those lines. At the same time, opinions were split over whether the departures — and the video itself — were justified, making this a topic that resists any simple verdict of right or wrong.
