Daisuke Hori Deletes ‘Short Sleeper’ Label After Getting Caught Dozing Off on Livestream — 5ch: ‘So It Was Just Something You Quit?’

The story

Businessman Daisuke Hori (42) has built his public persona around being a “short sleeper” who has supposedly gotten by on just 30 minutes of sleep a day for 17 years, running a paid training program as head of the Japan Short Sleeper Training Association. But during a week-long YouTube livestream starting September 9, he was repeatedly caught snoring and appearing to doze off mid-treatment. After the stream ended, it emerged that his profile had been quietly changed from “short sleeper” to “sleep however much you want,” fueling speculation on 5ch that he’d quietly dropped the whole act. The stream also had an incident where his lower body was accidentally shown on camera, and data from a smart ring reportedly showed his actual average sleep time was just 52 minutes a day — sparking a debate over what’s really true.

Businessman Daisuke Hori (42) is known as a “short sleeper” who claims to have lived on just 30 minutes of sleep a day for 17 years. He also serves as head of the general incorporated association “Japan Short Sleeper Training Association,” promoting his own custom-developed sleep-improvement program, which he says has trained more than 2,500 students to date.

Hori ran a week-long livestream on his own YouTube channel starting September 9, titled “The Daily Life of Short Sleeper Daisuke Hori.” Thanks to that stream, he’s now become impossible to avoid on social media — though not necessarily for the reasons he’d hoped.

“Over the week-long stream, one mishap after another piled up. First, on day two, he was caught snoring on camera in full view during a head-spa massage treatment. In later broadcasts, Hori repeatedly showed clear signs of drowsiness, and screenshots of him visibly straining to keep his heavy eyelids open — looking like he was at his absolute limit — began circulating on social media.

So it was the kind of thing you just… quit? 😅

Sleep disorder = 'short sleeper'
Anorexia = 'someone who can lose weight by not eating'

I kept seeing comments like 'the 5ch old geezers lost this one'

He's just a lazy bum who does nothing but sleep.
Get a job.

Re: #14
lol he's a super LONG sleeper
Sounds like some old man in a nursing home lol

According to him, the police are apparently investigating.

Re: #22
Really? Isn't he just saying that to make his students feel better about themselves?
44AnonymousSep 18, 2026 07:51
Actually, sleep really matters a ton! It'd be pretty convincing if he suddenly started saying 'self-proclaimed short sleepers, go get some sleep first!'

Re: #44
Yutabon said something similar a few years back too — 'Sure, there are plenty of adults who'll tell you it's fine to skip school, but none of them will actually help you out later when skipping school causes you problems.' I remember thinking that was surprisingly convincing. (Yutabon: a Japanese child YouTuber famous for dropping out of elementary school.)

Anyone who genuinely doesn't think they got scammed at this point is a hopeless idiot — no need to save people like that.

No can do, I'm not letting this go.

Must be nice — if 30 minutes of sleep a day is really enough,
you could get so much else done.
I want that special constitution.

Re: #51
Well, sure, if 30 minutes really did fully restore your body and mind…

But that goes against the laws of nature.
It's basically like claiming you can live without eating — that's not something a minor physical quirk can pull off.

Living that kind of short-sleep lifestyle is shaving years off your life in the long run.

The short-sleeper gimmick is losing steam, so he'll probably just turn into a regular YouTuber or something next.

Don't worry, I'm not sleepy at all (riffing on comedian Yasumura's catchphrase 'Don't worry, I'm wearing pants').

Isn't he getting arrested for public indecency?
99AnonymousSep 18, 2026 08:15
Re: #91
Maybe he'll get arrested once everyone's forgotten about it lol

If it's ruled intentional rather than accidental, he might at least get referred to prosecutors.

Total win-and-run.
Hosokawa and Takasu can't attack him anymore,
and Nadal can't even do impressions of him now.
Hori's the only one who made bank off this — the idiots who jumped on the bandwagon just lost, lol.

Re: #93
Even the haters who kept complaining were basically 'nutrients' feeding the hype, whether or not they threw in any tips.

Re: #93
Exactly. Especially pathetic is Takasu, who's been playing the 'sincere guy' act this whole time — now the mask's been ripped right off.

Animals live in order to sleep.

An animal's strongest drive is the urge to sleep —
it beats out appetite, libido, even the desire for honor.
Deny that and you're denying the very foundation of life.

There's definitely other stuff you should be cutting before sleep.
Bragging about not sleeping just means you can't manage your schedule.

Start by having every copy of his book returned,
and end up completely banned from society.

In the end, viewers just wanted to watch the lie get exposed.

It's the same feeling as watching Columbo's relentless, needling interrogation rattle a suspect — once he slips up, everyone piles on.

It's basically a form of cruelty as entertainment —
no different from making high schoolers throw hundreds of pitches under the blazing sun at Koshien.
Hori himself doesn't actually have any special ability.

Re: #114
That's a terrible analogy lol
117AnonymousSep 18, 2026 08:20
Technically, anything under 6 hours fits the definition of a 'short sleeper,' so it's not exactly wrong.
122AnonymousSep 18, 2026 08:24
Re: #117
Wait, really?
Then I guess that makes me one too.
Maybe I should start some kind of scheme with it.

Smart ring results:
total sleep over the week was 360 minutes,
averaging 52 minutes a day.

He's already been caught taking it off to sleep during the massage, and the staff were wearing the same model of smart ring — factor in the chance they swapped rings while he slept, and he was probably sleeping a ton.
136AnonymousSep 18, 2026 08:30
He reportedly tried to excuse it by saying the camera was just flipped, but both cameras were caught flipped, so he definitely took it off.

Background and points of contention

“Short sleeper” is generally understood as a trait confirmed in only a tiny handful of people with a rare physical constitution, and there’s little scientific backing for the claim that it can be acquired through training. As head of his association, Hori ran a paid training program built on the claim of having trained over 2,500 students. The dozing caught on camera during this livestream, together with the smart-ring data showing just how little he actually slept, has only deepened doubts about that core premise. Opinion on the thread is split — some see the wording change as proof he’s quietly dropped the claim, while others defend him, pointing out that anything under six hours technically fits the definition. As for whether the on-stream exposure was an accident or staged, the article’s information alone isn’t enough to say for sure.
