Director Kojima’s New Game PHYSINT Forced Back to the Drawing Board After Losing Access to the Decima Engine and More

From our other sites

The story

It’s become a hot topic on 5ch’s game-hardware board (Geha) that director Hideo Kojima’s new title ‘PHYSINT’ has lost access to the Decima Engine and Sony Pictures’ motion-capture facilities it had been using, forcing development to start over from scratch. Both were development infrastructure provided by Sony for the ‘Death Stranding’ series, so losing them effectively means a full project reset. On the thread, opinions clashed over pessimistic takes like “it won’t be finished for at least five years,” comparisons to past contract terminations with Konami and Google (Stadia), and speculation about a possible move to the Xbox camp.

There's no way this even gets finished in five years, is there?
2AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:11
Is this being set up so it blows up in their face when the release year gets announced at next week's Xbox Games Showcase broadcast?

Re: Re: #2
It's finishing in five years, apparently.
3AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:11
Nobody even wants this anymore, so they might as well just make a new one instead.

Re: Re: #3
Nobody wants a new one either, I bet.
5AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:13
Well, they probably figured they could use this as a bargaining chip.

Re: Re: #5
Since when is it Sony who's trying to keep him around?
10AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:17
If the PS5 version got cancelled, they could push it up to RTX 2080-level specs as an Xbox Series exclusive, huh.
59AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:33
Re: Re: #10
If it's not finishing for another 5-6 years, wouldn't it end up exclusive to the next-gen console by then?
11AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:17
They should just knock it out quick with AI already.
16AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:21
Re: Re: #11
I think Sony's layoff policy was probably done anticipating AI taking over work like this. If so, you'd think they'd have even more reason to keep the tools around, not less.

There's no way this finishes while Asha (a poster nickname for a Sony exec) is still in charge. Classic pattern: Asha's successor cuts the contract, grumbles "we wasted money because of Asha" after quitting, and gets slammed for it.

So it's coming out in 2028?

Re: Re: #26
I thought the joke was that Helix itself wouldn't even launch until around 2035.

Re: Re: #30
Once you combine two vague things like Helix and PHYSINT, there's no way to even guess anymore.
27AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:33
About the only thing they've actually produced so far is puppeting around his favorite 3D model of Minami Hamabe lol (Japanese actress)
31AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:39
Re: Re: #27
They could probably sell a decent number of copies just by releasing that freely-usable 3D scan data of Minami Hamabe on its own.
29AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:38
An engine isn't something you master overnight, you know. They'd only just gotten comfortable with it after making two games on it.
32AnonymousSep 12, 2026 15:39
Re: Re: #29
They're already deep into making OD on Unreal Engine, so they'll get used to that too.
40AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:03
I mean, if anything, development speed should go up thanks to Microsoft.
42AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:08
Re: Re: #40
Wait, when did they even announce TES (The Elder Scrolls)?

Re: Re: #40
Does Microsoft even handle progress management for them?
45AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:09
PHYSINT is starting to look like it could be the next Concord (the notorious Sony flop).
71AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:12
Re: Re: #45
No way, Kojima hates ugly character designs way too much for that.
50AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:23
Development's barely even started, right? At most it just means Minami Hamabe's shoot has to be redone.
63AnonymousSep 12, 2026 16:45
It's not even at the motion-capture stage yet lol
69AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:09
Re: Re: #63
They did the actor mo-cap first while the actual game wasn't built at all, that's why he got chewed out.
73AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:27
Re: Re: #63
Jumping straight to 3D scanning is just Kojima's style. The lead actor from OD passed away after that, by the way.
80AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:52
By then, I bet even Nintendo will have 'quit being Nintendo' (a play on 脱任天堂) and pulled out of the hardware business.
84AnonymousSep 12, 2026 17:56
I mean, if they just properly pay Sony the licensing fees, they could keep using both the game engine and the mo-cap facilities. Surely Microsoft-sama will foot the bill for Sony.
106AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:48
Re: Re: #84
While saying they "respect Kojima's vision" and will "keep collaborating closely going forward," they're the ones taking his dev tools away? That's Sony for you — all they're thinking about is sabotaging Kojima and Microsoft.
89AnonymousSep 12, 2026 18:10
Cut loose by Konami, then cut loose by Sony. If Microsoft cuts him loose too after this, don't you think you'd have to admit there's something wrong with Kojima's approach? If a backer is going to fund you long-term, you either need to deliver an explosive hit or hand over exclusive sales rights that help move hardware — and if you can't do that, you finish quickly and keep the funding costs down. If he had those basics down, I don't think he'd keep getting cut loose.

Re: Re: #89
Death Stranding is genuinely a well-made, good game, and it's popular and sold decently and got good reviews, but business-wise it seems to have barely broken even. Death Stranding 2 might even be running at a loss. Making a good game doesn't automatically mean everything's fine.

Re: Re: #89
Sigh… Is everyone forgetting he also got cut loose by Google? Does that not count because it was just Stadia shutting down? But if this time it's the same story — cut loose because they gave up on PS6 — then it all lines up, doesn't it? And Microsoft picking him up afterward matches the pattern too!

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

As an independent studio, Kojima Productions has moved between major platform holders for funding and technical partnerships — from Konami, to Sony, to (as speculated) Microsoft. The Decima Engine is technology from Sony’s Guerrilla Games, and the motion-capture facilities were also provided by Sony Pictures, so losing access to both isn’t just an equipment swap — it’s closer to losing the very foundation of the development pipeline. The thread split between those who see this as “a fatal blow to development” and those who see it as “temporary turbulence from a platform switch,” with the latter camp pointing to a possible link with Xbox’s next-generation console concept, “Helix.” That said, details and timing for Helix itself remain unconfirmed, so this stays firmly in speculation territory even within the thread. It’s also worth noting that the original Death Stranding itself took several years to complete as a major project, so a flat “five years from now” figure isn’t confirmed information either.
