The story

A Nintendo Switch 2 user’s claim that “the Switch 2 version can be played portably lol” sparked pushback in a 5ch thread, with users countering that smartphone cloud streaming also plays with almost no noticeable lag. The thread saw an ongoing clash between fans of native handheld hardware and streaming advocates, with the discussion expanding to cover the merits of portable devices like UMPCs, the Steam Deck, and PS Portal, price gaps of over 300,000 yen, and the connection hassles unique to remote play. At the heart of the debate was what the word “portable” actually means in terms of real-world experience.

What people said

Did you not know that most games can already be streamed to a phone with barely any lag?
2AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:08
I don't care how little lag streaming has, it's still gross, don't want it
3AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:08
Guessing you've never heard of vibepollo, Apollo, or Sunshine (self-hosted game-streaming host software)
4AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:10
It's basically Apple-fanboy behavior — acting amazed over something that's existed on Android forever
5AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:10
PC bro: "the Steam Deck is portable lol"

That's the whole argument
7AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:11
Say what you want, portability's just convenient
My UMPC gets a ton of use
8AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:12
Why don't you just go stream then?
We're enjoying our handhelds, so don't bother us
10AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:13
Re: #1
Show us footage of what you're actually playing over streaming
11AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:13
Seamlessly switching between handheld and docked mode is worlds apart from cloud streaming though
12AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:15
"I play games by hooking my console up to a TV" — what year do you think this is, phones are the standard now
13AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:15
UMPCs are seriously wild
Cost me around 140,000 yen but glad I bought one
16AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:18
Then why are more and more manufacturers suddenly rolling out gaming handheld PCs now, huh? lol
17AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:18
The Nintendo fanboys (hon-buta) who love bragging "PCs are portable too" have gone quiet
Wonder why
18AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:18
You guys worry about frame-gen input lag but you're fine with streaming lag?
19AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:18
You keep saying lag, lag, but
it's at a level humans genuinely can't perceive
you're just not keeping up with the times
24AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:21
Re: #19
If you're going to nitpick that, the Switch 2 works just fine too lol
20AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:19
Then I guess PS isn't needed either
21AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:20
Makes the Sony fanboys (GK) hyped for a new PlayStation handheld look kind of dumb
100AnonymousSep 11, 2026 23:47
Re: #21
Well, they are dumb
22AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:20
Getting jealous of something popular and picking fights without even thinking about why it's popular
This is what's called being a contrarian
23AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:21
Not stopping you — go play on your phone with a Bluetooth controller then
26AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:22
Funny, when Xbox started cloud gaming everyone was screaming about lag though
36AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:38
Phones, PS Portal, Steam Deck, Switch, Switch 2 — they're all great portable hardware
43AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:46
Re: #36
Does anyone actually carry a PS Portal around like that?
40AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:44
The ones still putting way too much faith in remote play are the ones living decades in the past…
50AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:47
Re: #40
Pretty sure it's your understanding that's stuck decades in the past
Remote play and streaming tech keep advancing
44AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:46
Having to boot up the host console is a quietly annoying hassle
51AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:47
Re: #44
If it disconnects right away that's annoying,
and if it doesn't auto-disconnect, having to manually cut the connection yourself is annoying too

It's annoying either way
60AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:58
If you don't play much Nintendo stuff, you're genuinely better off buying a UMPC than a Switch 2
61AnonymousSep 11, 2026 21:59
Re: #60
Yeah, that's me — I play a lot of indies
64AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:02
Re: #60
Sure, if it's the same price for equal or better performance, that'd be fine lol
81AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:18
Re: #60
Maybe if it's an AI Max 395 model at just under 400,000 yen, but something like the Ally X with a Z2E chip is actually weaker than the Switch 2
The only real upside is dropping graphics settings and resolution below Switch 2 levels to hit 60fps
62AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:00
Guess you wanted a handheld bad enough to go that far lol
71AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:07
Re: #62
Isn't a smartphone basically the opposite of "going that far"?
80AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:18
Can't really recommend it given the price gap is over 300,000 yen

Re: #80
I want that controller that comes with the Switch 2
Where's it sold?
84AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:21
Re: #1
Do you know the sales numbers for non-Nintendo Switch 2 games?
If you did, you'd get it lol
There aren't many clueless people out there buying the Switch 2 version just because it's portable
Q.E.D. Proof complete
86AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:23
Re: #84
What about the PS5 then, which sells even worse than that lol
85AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:22
Re: #1
Are you making fun of Sony, who's developing a PS6 handheld?
87AnonymousSep 11, 2026 22:23
Re: #85
That's normal
Anyone who actually tries remote play quickly realizes how much of a hassle it is
The people singing its praises like this are just the weird ones

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Cloud gaming refers to systems that transmit video from a console or PC over the internet to a device like a smartphone, with Xbox Cloud Gaming and PS Remote Play as prime examples. PS Portal, mentioned in the thread, is a dedicated remote-play device that can’t run games on its own — it requires a live internet connection to a PS5 console — which is a fundamentally different setup from the Switch 2, which stores game data internally and can boot up standalone. Without accounting for that difference, it’s hard to convey what kind of experience the word “portable” actually points to. Also worth noting: UMPCs (mini-PC-style handheld gaming devices) range in price from roughly 100,000 to 400,000-plus yen depending on the model, so the “300,000 yen price gap” cited in the thread assumes comparison with a high-end model. The thread weaves together multiple points of contention — tolerance for lag, the hassle of connecting, and price-to-performance — without reaching any consensus on which approach is better.
