The story
The guide effect in the PS5-exclusive title Marvel’s Wolverine — a smoke-like trail leading players straight to their destination — has earned it the nickname “the fart guideline” on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. Commenters were stunned to learn that even though the game is a completely linear, one-path experience, it still spells out the location of every treasure chest in detail, and QTEs succeed whether or not you even press the button. Famitsu, meanwhile, gave it a glowing review, praising its “playable movie”-like immersion, leaving the thread split on whether this overprotective design is a flaw or a feature.
What people said
Xenoblade 3 has an open field, so you can actually get lost in it, but Wolverine is a straight line the whole way through…
Actually, now's not really the time for that.
Sounds like the low-rank story in Monster Hunter Wilds.
That makes even less sense to me.
Isn't this kind of guide feature supposed to be for open-world games or ones with huge maps?
Well, I think Sony's positioning Marvel games on PlayStation as something casual players and kids can play too.
Whether that shows a lack of good sense is a separate issue, though.
The ultimate game for idiots.
Marvel's Wolverine has quick time events in some scenes, but it turns out you don't actually need to press the button to clear them.
Nothing changes whether you press it or not. It's enough to make you lose your mind.

This had me laughing.

Knock it off (AA omitted — a stock meme reaction image)
Re: #72 The low-poly models are so rough there's no room left for anything to even sway!
But it seems less funny than it was back when it was about the hair.
Bringing it up just makes people testy.
If not, why does it go to Japan at all?
In the American comics, he's got a backstory of living in Japan a long time and speaking Japanese.
Still, they didn't need to add a whole Japan stage just for that — doesn't seem like it'd sell well in Japan anyway.
Because this is what the Japan stage looks like.
Uncharted barely made you use your brain either, aside from the occasional light puzzle, and it was still fun.
Doesn't it seem pathetic that PlayStation is losing out to short-form videos? 😭
It's Wolverine-sense, duh.
He is canonically supposed to have a great sense of smell and hearing.

"QTEs all succeed whether you fail them or just leave them alone"
"A game that doesn't trust the player at all"
"It's like being forced to bowl with the gutter guards up the entire time"

"Heck, it'll even throw the ball for you if you don't"
I do not recommend: Marvel's Wolverine
("Not recommended") lol
"Marvel's Wolverine: Precisely because it's so linear, you never know when to stop — hooked on its 'playable movie' immersion"

Famitsu's damage control is getting pretty absurd at this point.
>"playable movie"
…oh.
Background and Points of Debate
The nickname “fart guideline” comes from the visual effect that guides players to their destination, which leaves a smoke-like trail in its wake. The actual point of criticism is that despite the game following a completely linear, single-path structure, it still spells out the location of every treasure chest one by one, and its QTEs are designed to succeed regardless of whether the player presses the button. In recent AAA titles, destination markers and QTE-skip options are typically included as accessibility features independent of difficulty settings, but the thread’s discussion assumes the out-of-the-box experience and never addresses whether such settings can be changed. The thread also cited Famitsu’s favorable review, which praised the game for feeling like a “playable movie,” and opinion was split over whether its linear, low-effort design should be seen as a strength or as a lack of substance as a game. This divide is also rooted in the precedent set by “turn your brain off” style action games like Uncharted, which have found a fair amount of support in the past.
