Kura Sushi to Refund Missed Collab Discount — 5ch Reacts: ‘No Receipt, But My Stomach Remembers’

From our other sites

The story

Kura Sushi has announced it will refund customers who missed out on the 10% discount that was supposed to apply during its collaboration with the character franchise Chiikawa, after the discount failed to be applied at some locations. On 5ch, users shared information suggesting the missed discounts were concentrated among customers who paid with something other than cash, sparking discussion over how the chain would handle cases where customers can no longer produce a receipt. The thread also split over whether refunds should even extend to customers who visited purely for the “Bikkura Pon” prize gacha included with sushi orders — with one lawyer’s view that “the contract is fulfilled once the ordered sushi is served” clashing against the counterargument that “the prizes have real value now that they’re priced on flea-market resale apps.”

No receipt, but my stomach remembers
I've eaten 100 million plates
4AnonymousSep 9, 2026 19:57
This company is rotten to the core
Whoever's in charge of corporate planning must be a bunch of idiots
Garbage company run by incompetents
6AnonymousSep 9, 2026 19:58
There it is — 'no receipt, no refund'
It's the ultimate move: guarantees you cut costs while still looking like you're showing good faith, way better than just actually giving the 10% off properly. Why wouldn't they do it.
7AnonymousSep 9, 2026 19:58
If you paid cash and already tossed the receipt, you're screwed
46AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:09
Re: #7
The discount only failed for customers who paid via mobile payment or e-money — cash customers got the discount fine. Sounds like HQ rolled out the discount without giving stores enough time to update their POS systems.
8AnonymousSep 9, 2026 19:59
Everything they do backfires — is there some idiot running things over there?
Sounds like the type who'd always pick the wrong choice in an adventure game
9AnonymousSep 9, 2026 19:59
On the day, they wouldn't apply the discount unless you asked for it, and they didn't even keep staff on hand with the discount cards
Then, right when everyone's long since thrown away their receipt, they go 'oh we totally meant to give you the discount~ we'll refund you if you still have your receipt~' — hilarious

31AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:04
Won't a credit card statement work either?

Re: #31
Re: #31
It literally says that's fine
32AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:04
And yet Japanese customers will still show up for the next collab
Peak stupidity
41AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:07
Re: #32
Of course people will go
Most people don't expect much from the gacha part anyway — they go for the flat-rate stuff you're guaranteed to get 100% of the time
33AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:04
How many times are they gonna make you come back lol
66AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:11
Re: #33
They should deduct our transportation costs too
36AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:06
I get 'some stores,' but why would only some customers within those same stores miss the discount while others didn't?
57AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:10
Re: #36
Isn't it because some registers are self-checkout and others are staffed?
42AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:08
They probably felt like they had to rush something out
so they ran the 10% off sale before operations were actually ready
and now they're getting slammed for it
Might've been better not to rush it at all
74AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:13
Re: #42
If they hadn't rushed, all the fish they stocked up on for the collab would've gone bad
83AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:15
Re: #74
It's bad optics when the reasoning is that transparent
Who exactly are they apologizing to with a 10% discount — that's really all it amounts to
94AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:16
Re: #74
Re: #83
Wasn't this supposed to be a long-running collab?
Can they really move all that stock with just a two-day-ish sale?
45AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:08
The staff on the ground must be completely wrecked
I honestly wonder why they're still working there
54AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:10
Re: #45
Whoever embezzled brought it on themselves, but there must be plenty of people who work honestly there too — feel bad for them
86AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:15
Re: #45
Right when the collab made things insanely busy, it got abruptly cancelled
then suddenly this 10% discount comes out of nowhere and throws the stores into chaos
and on top of that there's this whole discount screwup
I don't know how the staff put up with it
91AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:16
Re: #45
Well, they can't exactly just suddenly quit and become unemployed
51AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:10
All because they collabed with Chiikawa…
55AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:10
Re: #51
Stuff like this is exactly why Nagano (Chiikawa's creator) would win for sure if she sued for damages
52AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:10

Yeah, of course it's getting refunded
63AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:11
I bet some people traveled from far away just for the merch
84AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:15
Re: #63
Kura Sushi apparently has locations in all 47 prefectures, so that's something at least
64AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:11
No no, they've gotta refund the customers who only went for the prize, not the sushi! 👆💦
67AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:12
Re: #64
You did eat the sushi though, right? 😎
75AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:14
This company is truly done for. Is the 'additive-free' claim even real?
80AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:14
Re: #75
'Additive-free,' huh? Watch your words
You'll get sued
89AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:15
Re: #75
It's free of the 'big four' additives
They haven't released data on other additives, but if you make baseless claims about it you'll get sued

[Explainer] Lawyer points out: 'The Chiikawa collab prize is just a sushi extra. Once the sushi you ordered is served, the contract is fulfilled — legally, a refund would be difficult'

Sounds like refunding the Bikkura Pon prize is legally tricky
105AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:21
Re: #101
There's also an article where a different lawyer says that argument doesn't hold up anymore, since flea-market apps now clearly establish a market value for these prizes
107AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:22
Re: #101
That won't fly given that 'Bikkura Pon Plus' (a paid version of the prize gacha) exists
104AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:21
Did they seriously not think through the checkout process at all
111AnonymousSep 9, 2026 20:23
Re: #104
Their stance seems to be that it's the staff's fault for not handling it properly

Background and Key Points of Debate

“Bikkura Pon” is a prize lottery available at chains like Sushiro and Kura Sushi, where customers get a chance to win prizes tied to their sushi orders — this time themed around the Chiikawa collaboration. The thread split mainly over two points. First was the question of who exactly was affected by the missed discount: posters shared that cash-paying customers had the 10% discount applied normally in-store, while only customers who paid via e-money or mobile payment missed out due to a gap in the POS system settings. The second point was the legal basis for refunds, with lawyers split between the view that “the contract is fulfilled once the ordered sushi is served, so there’s no obligation to refund the prize” and the counter-view that “the prize’s value can’t be dismissed now that it’s openly priced on flea-market resale apps” — neither side was settled within the thread. Though not mentioned in the original article, campaigns like this often run into ambiguity under Japan’s Premiums and Representations Act over where a “freebie” ends and a “product” begins, which is part of why companies tend to end up reacting after the fact rather than getting ahead of it.
