Ocarina of Time Remake Character Models Draw ‘Creepy’ Backlash — 5ch: ‘Needlessly Realistic and Gross’

From our other sites

The story

Images of character models believed to be from a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time were posted to 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha), sparking a wave of “creepy” and “gross” reactions. Many commenters pointed out that Link and Sheik’s proportions and textures lean toward a realistic, live-action style, comparing them unfavorably to the stylized, doll-like models from the Dragon Quest VII remake. Others praised the “high quality” of the work, and opinions split sharply over whether a stylized or realistic look is more desirable.

Didn't people use to praise the 2D-ish, cartoony look?
4AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:28
This is genuinely gross, lol.
They should've just gone with a toon style like Breath of the Wild.
21AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:35
Re: #4
Don't need that.
5AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:29
People have been trashing the character models in Dragon Quest, FF, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter this whole time, and now Zelda goes and does this.
6AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:29
Looked to me like an evolved version of that doll-like style from Dragon Quest VII, though.
8AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:30
Re: #6
Dragon Quest VII got it right with proper stylization.
Ocarina of Time went needlessly realistic and it's gross.
10AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:30
Re: #6
That's a downgrade, it's creepy.
98AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:13
Re: #6
The producer of the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined remake apparently said something like "this is the doll look, right?" lol
9AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:30
Breath of the Wild's Zelda being kind of homely — like "whoa, that's a big butt" lol — was a funny thing you could laugh off, but this Ocarina of Time model is just gross.
11AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:30
Seen in the context of the game world it's fine, but against a plain white background it's pretty rough.
12AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:30
It's genuinely creepy, lmao.
This was probably outsourced overseas.
13AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:31
It gives off the same unease as an AI-generated image.
Uncanny.
14AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:31
Where'd all the cartoon-style-loving "boo-chans" (a mocking 5ch nickname for rival-console fanboys) go?
16AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:32
?
This is seriously high quality though.
17AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:32
As long as it's fun, I don't mind…
but yeah, this makes me go "well… um…" lol
19AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:34
Everything except the face is fine.
Thought maybe they were going for overseas appeal, but when I looked it up, people overseas are calling it a goblin.
Hmm, now I'm torn on whether to buy it.
20AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:34
Kid Zelda still looks okay from this angle, but the courtyard scene was rough.
Saria and the others aren't bad, so why'd it turn out like that?
22AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:35
Wait? This is supposed to be the realistic one?
25AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:36
Re: #22
The design itself is stylized, but the realistic texturing is what makes it creepy.
38AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:52
Sheik's head is huge.

39AnonymousSep 9, 2026 01:53
Both Sheik and Link are creepy.
The Smash Bros. models would've been the ideal look.
74AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:34
Re: #39
Everyone's already so used to that visual style that it can't feel fresh anymore.

There's probably also an element of this being a showcase for something only the Switch 2 can pull off — blending a more realistic texture quality with that fantasy feel.
46AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:02

If Nintendo were the one making this doll-look style, people would be bashing it non-stop as a "realistic graphics" game lol
48AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:04
Re: #46
Looking at it again, Dragon Quest VII's graphics are really good — the stylization works well.
Ocarina of Time went needlessly realistic with its textures; it's creepy and tasteless.
50AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:04
Re: #46
That's lower quality than Ocarina of Time.
56AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:07
Re: #46
This one's creepy too.
A plain anime style would be better.
51AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:05
Re: #50
Dragon Quest beats Ocarina of Time.
The art direction is well done.
54AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:07
Re: #51
Not well done at all.
The protagonist just looks like some random background character. Trash.
65AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:22
God-tier graphics
67AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:24
Re: #65
And you can play this on a handheld.
Seriously incredible.
68AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:29
Re: #65
People have been mocking FF's "god-tier graphics" this whole time though lol
75AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:35
Looks like Killua (from Hunter x Hunter)
76AnonymousSep 9, 2026 02:35
Kid Link's cheeks are puffed up way too much, making him look like a Kewpie doll, and the duck-lips on top of that make it even worse — not a fan.
Zelda and Ruto are fine though.
103AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:18
Re: #76
Women on X (Twitter) are calling it cute, so I guess it's a design meant to appeal to female fans.
91AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:06
I get this completely.
This is built in Unreal Engine 5, right?
They were originally going for realistic graphics, so maybe this is the correct call, but it looks just like those AI-generated "remake" videos that are all over the place lately.
It kind of gives off a "fan project" vibe and doesn't feel very Nintendo.
93AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:10
Re: #91
There's no random fan out there who could make something of this quality though.
94AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:11
If a fan made this and posted it, they'd absolutely get dogpiled for it.
95AnonymousSep 9, 2026 03:12
Re: #94
Why don't you actually make it first before saying that?
Not sure how many hundred years that'd take you, though.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The thread doesn’t make clear where the images originated or whether an official remake announcement has even been made, and based on the material here alone it’s impossible to tell whether these are official assets or unofficial cuts. The central point of contention was the differing degree of stylization across series entries: some commenters championed a toon-style approach like Breath of the Wild, while others felt this model’s more realistic texturing fell into “uncanny valley” territory. Many comparisons were drawn to the visuals of the Dragon Quest VII remake and Final Fantasy, and it’s easy to miss on a quick read that even within Nintendo and Square Enix titles, the thread showed no consistent standard for judging graphical style.
