“An Announcement on an Unbelievable Level”: Sony’s Mystery Leak Meets Nothing But Skepticism on 5ch

The story

On September 7, a gaming-focused X (formerly Twitter) account leaked word that “Sony is apparently making an announcement on an unbelievable scale around 10am Pacific Time,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. The timing overlapped with the same-day announcement of a new Nintendo Direct, fueling speculation. Thread posters floated guesses ranging from a Zelda movie tie-in to new software lineups for the Switch 2, but with the replies under the original leak post flooded with negative reactions toward Sony, skepticism and low expectations dominated the discussion.

I’m hearing an unbelievable-level leak that Sony might announce something big tomorrow. Keep an eye out around 10am Pacific Time.

Betting it's some game called 'Junk Crossing: New Horizons,' starring the Nicotine Cat (a scruffy stray-cat internet meme)

Nobody in the replies has any expectations, lol

Is Nintendo finally becoming a Sony subsidiary?!
11AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:37
Re: #8
Probably something like that
Maybe they're doing a multiplatform re-release of old titles to tie in with the movie
9AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:35
Turns out it's coming to Steam after all
12AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:37
It's gotta be a follow-up on 'The Movie of Zelda,' just watch
13AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:38
They don't have any IP bigger than Zelda, so they'd just get crushed
14AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:38
It's probably just about some Japan-only limited edition anyway
15AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:39
Zelda ditches Nintendo, PlayStation-exclusive Monolith Soft new Zelda incooooooming?????(´・ω・`)
18AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:41
If it were good news, they'd have announced it at State of Play already, you know
23AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:42
Burying the Direct with a price-hike announcement!
Lol
28AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:44
Re: #23
They're probably using Zelda hype to bury some inconvenient price-hike news
54AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:58
Re: #23
No way
The last price hike didn't even crack the top 20 trends, you know?
Normal people just don't care anymore
34AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:47
If that's really it, just announce it at State of Play
40AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:49
Re: #34
Because it's bad news, so…
45AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:51
Is everyone's idol Aloy showing up on Switch?
47AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:52
Re: #45
If they're doing that, it'll be the day after tomorrow
55AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:58
Maybe it's a temporary discontinuation announcement for the Switch 2? Since it'd be dumb to keep eating rising memory costs, maybe they're freezing the Switch 2 until memory prices settle down
56AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:59
Re: #55
Wait, Sony would be the one announcing that? That's so dumb, lol
63AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:01
Re: #55
What even is this, lol
57AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:59
If they're calling it something on an unbelievable scale, isn't it gotta be really good news?
64AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:01
Re: #57
If it were good news for PS, they'd save it for a surprise slot at their own State of Play
Even if it is good news, it's probably got nothing to do with PS or SIE
67AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:02
Re: #57
There's no way it's good news
66AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:02
Word is the Direct's headliner is Genshin Impact

The replies are seriously trashing them, lol
Didn't realize Sony was hated this much

Re: #95
If even people overseas hate them, that's rough
97AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:17
Nintendo pulling out of hardware and getting absorbed by Sony actually seems kind of plausible
Rather than keep churning out low-spec junk hardware that doesn't sell, Nintendo would probably make more money and be happier putting out high-quality games on high-spec PS and PC
107AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:20
Re: #97
What's the deal with these shills anyway
102AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:18
So they're saying they'll release software for the Switch 2?

Re: #102
Horizon jumping ship from PlayStation?
111AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:21
Re: #102
Even State of Play didn't have a single first-party software announcement
If this does, I'd be shocked

There's not a single thing I want here, so nobody benefits

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This “announcement on an unbelievable scale” isn’t an official statement — it started as secondhand hearsay from an overseas personal account, with no comment from Sony itself. In the gaming industry, unverifiable leaks like this routinely swirl the day before a major showcase, and there’s a long history of “huge announcement” hype fizzling into a letdown, which is exactly the track record behind 5ch’s skepticism here. Posters also pointed to “State of Play,” Sony’s own showcase event mentioned in the thread, arguing it’s unlikely Sony would sit on news from its own event only to drop it to coincide with Nintendo’s showcase day instead — a key basis for the doubt. Note that the Nintendo Direct scheduled for the same day is a separate matter from Sony’s announcement and shouldn’t be confused with it.
