A pitching WAR ranking posted on a 5ch live-discussion board sparked buzz after it showed Shohei Ohtani sitting at 26th (3.0) — trailing not only league-leading Misiorowski (5.5) but also fellow DH-only player Alvarez.
The thread split over whether continuing the two-way career still makes sense, given Ohtani currently falls short of the qualifying threshold in both hitting and pitching, with talk spilling over into his run of consecutive 30-homer seasons alongside players like Schwarber, and the state of his knee.

Pitcher WAR
1st: Misiorowski 5.5
26th: Ohtani 3.0

Guess he's lost to Alvarez in WAR too, even though they're both DH-only guys
8Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:36:30.40ID:tpXLq+520
What's so great about this 'Pika' guy anyway? (nickname, apparently for the player just mentioned)

Hits more home runs than Ohtani, runs better than Ohtani, and fields better than Ohtani
11Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:37:03.45ID:KwdLla1j0

Honestly, pretty much everything, no joke
19Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:38:17.70ID:j/njBgyn0
So what does it even take to hit 30 homers with a 9.300 OPS and still end up with a WAR only in the 4s?
24Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:39:45.64ID:1v2mEIRH0

He folds in clutch situations
21Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:39:17.10ID:TCB+jCdQ0
See? This proves it once and for all.
Going two-way lowers your WAR.
Even back in 2022, when he qualified in both hitting and pitching, his WAR was lower than usual that year.
His career high also came in a DH-only season.
Two-way baseball is completely worthless and pointless — it just racks up injuries

>>21
The faithful love to fantasize and just add the numbers together, but two-way play really just debuffs both sides
39Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:43:59.10ID:tpXLq+520
>>21
Babe Ruth proved that a hundred years ago
32Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:42:34.33ID:B+auG5m/0
Why did he suddenly wash up like this?
It happened all at once
37Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:43:14.62ID:hWWt0udQ0
>>32
It's the knee… he ran too much during his 50-50 season
36Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:43:07.09ID:ZsPEQR2h0
If the WAR's the same either way, doing it as a two-way player is still more impressive, right?
Even a bit lower, two-way is still amazing

>>36
He's just doing something absurdly roundabout to achieve what he could do the normal way — it's wasted effort
It's like taking a 100 km/h detour to arrive in the same 10 minutes you'd get just driving straight there at 60 km/h. Pointless
70Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:57:11.86ID:WFBfq9c90
>>48
lol, that's a surprisingly clear analogy
80Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:04:05.60ID:ZsPEQR2h0
>>48
So you don't rate utility players either then?
40Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:44:02.07ID:bUOTrQfU0
And he's still got 8 wins on the mound
44Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:45:52.61ID:UAzx9YhV0
>>40
Say that to Yamamoto's face
41Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:45:32.61ID:j/njBgyn0
Let's take a moment here to check in on Aaron Judge — the guy people used to bash Ohtani with — and his stats this season
AVG .248 17 HR 38 RBI OPS .907 (hasn't reached the qualifying threshold)
45Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:46:13.40ID:fu56vCiN0
>>41
He's just been out hurt for like 3 months now, newbie (ニワカ, i.e. a casual/bandwagon fan)
53Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:48:03.56ID:lzkz9Lp/0
He's so weak against scrubs (雑魚専, i.e. padding stats against weak competition) that it's almost sad watching people desperately push the fact his OPS is only a hair higher than PCA's
111Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:28:22.78ID:KV5xQ5kx0
>>53
PCA (Pete Crow-Armstrong) has played a full season and still has the higher wRC+, so Ohtani's flat-out losing on offense too
PCA's defense — historically great, even though some call it overrated — grades out about even with roughly 80 innings of Ohtani's pitching by the metrics
And on the bases, PCA blows him away completely
59Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:52:35.30ID:XXqwZ4J+0
MLB: 'Six straight 30-homer seasons — among active players, only Shohei Ohtani and Schwarber have done it.'
Is this guy a god or something?
64Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:53:56.35ID:cZGLjN550
>>59
There's about to be a third
60Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:52:40.49ID:nXMYEIms0
By the way, here's Cal Raleigh's line this season (as of 8/22)
AVG: .157
HR: 14
RBI: 47
OPS: .577
63Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 19:53:16.30ID:WI5l6iiI0
>>60
Unlike Judge, who's just hurt, this is genuinely brutal
77Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:00:46.49ID:j/njBgyn0
His batting-only WAR in 2024 was 9.2, and even that might lose to PCA's this year, no?
91Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:10:15.62ID:cZGLjN550
>>77
Well, getting that while playing DH is basically a miracle in itself
78Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:02:47.10ID:2BV0dwDZ0
Does Ohtani's DH defensive penalty get offset by his pitching value?
108Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:25:28.60ID:rNz9uilN0
>>78
Whether he's pitching or not, he's standing in as the DH at the plate, so there's no way it would be offset
79Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:04:01.40ID:xqphX4bi0
If he steps up in the postseason this year and becomes the key man in a three-peat, that's worth more than an MVP, right?
84Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:06:31.27ID:6TeHrDPE0
>>79
After watching how last year went, only the true believers are still expecting that — plus he doesn't look like he'll even be able to pitch, and I can't picture him hitting any better than he has all season either
96Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:13:02.91ID:7eFo8w8yM
It's kind of sad how he's been desperately padding his stats with stolen bases lately
102Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:19:04.08ID:1ZnKNKGz0
>>96
He's desperate enough to just ignore his own 'bad knee' storyline
100Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:17:41.16ID:j/njBgyn0
I want someone willing to risk getting banned to just ask Ohtani straight up, 'Why don't you just play position player full-time?'
101Anonymous2026/08/22(土) 20:18:57.49ID:WwKJA+6R0
>>100
You don't even need to ask that — it's just because he can't
