Vtuber Questions Mushoku Tensei’s Polygamy Setup — 5ch: ‘A Harem with Modern Values Is Just Creepy’

The story

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board after a Vtuber criticized the polygamy (one husband, multiple wives) setup in the light novel/anime series “Mushoku Tensei.” The debate centers on a protagonist who keeps his modern-day memories and values but goes along with the isekai world’s values to build a harem. Supporters countered that “it’s beside the point to judge a male-oriented narou series by general ethical standards in the first place,” while critics argued that “it’s creepier for a protagonist to keep his modern knowledge while conveniently adopting the isekai world’s values whenever it’s convenient.” The discussion expanded into a broader debate over the legitimacy of the series’ premise itself.

Vtuber: "If his wife (like Sylphiette or Roxy) said she wanted to take a second husband, everyone would absolutely lose their minds, right?"

It's weird to judge a harem-oriented narou (web-novel genre) story written for young men by mainstream standards.
It's like complaining that a porn actress's performance doesn't match reality.

Re: #14
Not "young men" — you mean "weak men," right?
116AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:32
Re: #14
I'm actually middle-aged…
17AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:19
What if Sylphiette said she wanted to make Luke her second husband?
Everyone would absolutely flip out.
23AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:22
Re: #17
That really puts it in perspective. That'd get like 10x the backlash compared to Roxy's polygamy.
30AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:25
Re: #17
It'd definitely get bashed even harder than Paul.
25AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:22
Former EN (English-branch VTubers) are smart, huh.
Some who quit had better academic credentials than Todai or Kyoto University grads.
120AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:34
Re: #25
Even among the active ones, there are girls whose academic rankings beat Todai.
28AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:24
Mushoku Tensei is basically otaku wish-fulfillment poured straight onto the page — it's creepy.
Getting mad when an outsider points that out is just insane.
31AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:25
Re: #28
It's well-reviewed, so I'd say it's actually good.

If Princess Ueda took multiple husbands, people would bash her as 'worse trash than Rudeus!'
41AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:32
Re: #35
Ueda had feelings for Rudeus, so it's actually plausible, which makes it worse.
56AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:46
Re: #35
People would nag on and on about her being 'creepier than Rudeus.'
105AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:26
Re: #35
Princess Ueda's setup isn't just multiple husbands — she takes on a bunch of lovers and keeps having kids without even knowing who the father is.
42AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:34
If Rudeus has multiple wives he can father more kids, but if Ariel has multiple husbands she can't have more kids — so it's just not rational.
82AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:06
Re: #42
Ariel has 5 kids, and every one has a different father 😁
45AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:37
Sylphiette is the real crazy one, as always.
You can at least accept Rudeus as just a guy who's loyal to his dick.
48AnonymousOct 6, 2026 23:39
Re: #45
Sylphiette isn't a Milis follower, so that's why she accepted Roxy.
74AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:02
Polyandry/polygamy is fine on its own as long as the characters are actually likable.
But Mushoku Tensei is creepy regardless of that.
80AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:03
Re: #74
As always, even Rudeus himself isn't likable to begin with.
75AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:02
Harem/concubine-court stories are popular with women too.
Do women maybe not actually understand what a "harem" means?
79AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:03
Re: #75
Isn't the love interest often not even the emperor himself?
106AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:27
Re: #75
They like authority and status, so if the "jobless" protagonist had been set up from the start as chosen royal bloodline destined to be emperor, they'd probably have accepted it.
81AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:06
After becoming Queen of the Asura Kingdom, Ariel sleeps around with tons of men and keeps having kids, but the fact she never has a child with Rudeus somehow makes it even creepier.
85AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:09
Re: #81
At least do something like Paul and Lilia — "couldn't hold back and crossed the line" ❤ — that kind of thing.
87AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:11
They should've just paired him with Roxy alone, honestly.
Well, I guess they wanted to show off the Man-God's scheme.
90AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:13
Re: #87
If they'd done it that way without the polygamy, the creepiness would've been toned down a lot.
102AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:24
Everyone's defending it with "that's just how this world works, so it's fine!" but that's exactly the problem.

The protagonist was reincarnated from the modern world with modern knowledge and values, yet he conveniently adopts the isekai world's values instead of sticking to his own — that's what's so creepy.
If the protagonist were a pure native of that world, this wouldn't be an issue.

The creepy part is a Japanese guy with modern knowledge running a harem in another world.
121AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:36
Re: #102
It's not even a complicated argument — the content itself is just plain creepy.
It's written with that 20th-century creepy-otaku vibe.
103AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:25
Bringing up "but old Japan was like this too" is just dumb.

Old Japan had different values from today.

Mushoku Tensei's protagonist still has modern values and STILL runs a harem — that's why it's so creepy.
122AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:37
Re: #103
Can't help it — narou (web-novel genre) devotees see themselves as isekai natives anyway.
108AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:28
No wonder Kadokawa would fall into the red if they leaned too hard into narou titles.
It only resonates with creepy otaku who want harem impregnation fantasies.
119AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:33
Re: #108

But this is actually the #2 best-seller of all time in Kadokawa's publishing division 😅
109AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:28
If Sylphiette or Roxy did that, they'd get bashed because it goes against their character.
But if Ariel hypothetically joined Rudeus's harem while still sleeping around with other men, she probably wouldn't get bashed nearly as much.
115AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:31
Re: #109
No way that's true. If that actually happened, you'd for sure end up on the bashing side too.
123AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:38
Re: #109
She's unconditionally devoted to the reincarnated protagonist — no cheating involved lol
124AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:38
For the next new series, please make it about reincarnating as jobless and marrying a Vtuber.
125AnonymousOct 7, 2026 00:40
Re: #124
Go read the new series about a virgin hero orc's journey to lose his virginity 😡

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mushoku Tensei is known as a so-called “harem-style narou (web novel) series,” in which a protagonist reincarnated into another world while keeping his modern-day memories ends up in relationships with multiple women. Supporters frame it as: “Judging a work packed with male-targeted wish fulfillment by general ethical standards misses the point to begin with.” Critics counter: “The real problem is a protagonist who keeps his modern values intact, yet conveniently adopts the isekai world’s values only when it suits him.” That split in critical framing — rather than simple like or dislike of the work itself — was at the core of the thread. The sales-ranking image posted in the thread illustrates how the series remains one of Kadokawa’s flagship titles despite the mixed reception. Note: posts amounting to personal attacks on the Vtuber who raised the criticism have been excluded from this article.
