Demon Slayer Is Done, One Piece and Conan Keep Going — 5ch: ‘I’ve Earned Enough, Time to Retire’

From our other sites

The story

A 5ch thread lit up over a contrast: Demon Slayer’s creator is said to have “earned a lifetime’s worth of money and retired to the countryside,” while the creators of One Piece and Detective Conan keep drawing to protect their staff’s jobs. Demon Slayer wrapped up in just 23 volumes — unusually short for a shonen manga, where decade-long runs are the norm. The thread spiraled from criticism that “the story was too thin to sustain a long run” into comparisons of other authors’ work ethics, like Hiromu Arakawa and Yoshihiro Togashi, and even a debate over whether Demon Slayer or Dragon Ball has had the bigger economic impact.

What people said

Demon Slayer's author: "I've earned enough for a lifetime, so I'm retiring to my hometown ^^"
One Piece & Detective Conan's authors: "I'll keep drawing for life, for the sake of my staff's jobs"
What are we even supposed to make of this…

She's probably had her second kid by now and is grinding away as a stay-at-home mom.
15AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:34
Re: #3
Her husband doesn't need to work either, right?
6AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:32
Demon Slayer was a thin, shallow story to begin with — that's exactly why it couldn't be stretched out.
7AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:32
Way better than dragging it out for hundreds of volumes forever.
10AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:33
Not thinking about me at all, huh? I want to see the ending already — how long do you plan to drag this out?
11AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:33
They're still raking in merch sales and movie box office — nothing's really changed.
Are you dumb?
12AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:33
Won't she just join the magazine Rin Shihei (the Jump editor behind several hit series) is launching?
13AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:34
She just hit the jackpot on the anime adaptation lottery, and honestly, she knows when to quit while she's ahead.
14AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:34
Conan's author just keeps drawing his personal Gundam fan-service stuff — everyone except fujoshi (female BL-leaning fans) is creeped out and bailing…
99AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:15
Re: #14
I haven't read the main series — is it really that packed with Gundam references?
17AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:36
Could Kubo Yasuhisa, the author of Azazel-san, not get by without drawing either?
19AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:37
So somewhere in Japan there's a woman sitting on a ridiculous fortune while looking like just another ordinary person.
20AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:37
Honestly, with that level of art skill, a long run would've been rough anyway — this works out fine.
21AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:38
Dragging it out just piles up more crappy plot holes, so this is for the best.
22AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:38
Hiromu Arakawa doesn't need to work anymore either, but she keeps grinding.
36AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:44
Re: #22
Arakawa's had family members get sick, so there's a good chance a lot of that money is going toward that.
28AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:41
The moment she got praised by hiatus-prone guys like Togashi and Kinoko Nasu, you knew she was the same type.
31AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:42
Re: #28
Togashi also raved about Rin Okamoto — so are they really "the same type" too?
45AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:49
Re: #36
I mean, given how much she's earned, that's easily covered.
61AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:00
Re: #45
Arakawa just loves drawing manga regardless of the money — same type as Rumiko Takahashi.
50AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:51
What about someone like the Frieren author, who hasn't even finished anything but keeps going on hiatus?
54AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:53
Re: #50
There's been a lot of that lately, huh.
51AnonymousOct 3, 2026 21:51
68AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:04
I wonder if Demon Slayer will keep earning royalties for generations like Dragon Ball does.
73AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:06
Re: #68
Ten years, tops, probably.
76AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:06
Re: #68
Yeah, I don't think it'll go that far.
70AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:05
The art's rough, but the storytelling is good.
75AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:06
Re: #70
Thanks to the anime, people think the manga's good too, but it's rough.
77AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:07
Re: #70
The manga isn't that great either, but the anime covered for it, and that's why it's been deified.
78AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:08
Demon Slayer's films have grossed over ¥30 billion at the box office, taking the all-time #1 and #2 spots. Merch sales are through the roof too. It's miles ahead of Dragon Ball or One Piece.
89AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:13
Re: #78
Sorry, but as an IP, One Piece and Dragon Ball are still bigger than Demon Slayer.
These days Demon Slayer merch isn't selling to kids like it used to — it's struggling.

Re: #75
The way he strikes dramatic poses (like kabuki "mie") is pure style.
Same type as Attack on Titan.
86AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:12
Re: #80
Looks like straight-up bad art to me.
93AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:14
Old-timer Dragon Ball fanboys are still as cringe as ever lol
No matter how you look at it, Demon Slayer's economic impact is bigger lol
What does Dragon Ball even win at?
101AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:16
Re: #93
Demon Slayer fans need to face reality — Dragon Ball ranks higher worldwide in economic impact.
102AnonymousOct 3, 2026 22:17
Re: #93
Dragon Ball's manga has sold 260 million copies.
Demon Slayer's at around 200 million, so Dragon Ball wins there, but factoring in everything else, Demon Slayer takes the win.

Re: #101
Source?
Domestic box office — Demon Slayer wins by an overwhelming margin.
Overseas too, Demon Slayer wins overwhelmingly.
Demon Slayer merch is selling like a social phenomenon too.
Show me your source.

Re: #106
Demon Slayer isn't even in the rankings.

Background and Key Points

Demon Slayer ran from its 2016 serialization debut through 2020, wrapping up in 23 volumes. That’s a very different timeline and production setup from decades-spanning series like One Piece and Detective Conan, so framing this as a simple difference in “work ethic” is a stretch. The thread also speculated about the author’s gender and family situation, but creator Koyoharu Gotouge has never publicly confirmed their gender, so none of that is verified. The circulation and box-office figures cited in the Demon Slayer-vs-Dragon Ball economic comparison also include claims with shaky sourcing within the thread, so they shouldn’t be taken at face value. It is an officially confirmed fact that the Mugen Train film holds Japan’s all-time #1 box office spot, but which franchise comes out on top overall still depends on which metric you use.
