Record-Breaking Rain Floods Chiba, Uchibo Line Suspended for 3 Months

The story

Following record-breaking heavy rain in Chiba Prefecture, a thread went up on 5channel’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board with photos of the damage from the scene. Chiba City reportedly saw 1,170mm of rainfall over just the past two months, already surpassing its total rainfall for all of 2025. JR’s Uchibo Line has been suspended for three months due to landslides and other damage, sparking concern over the impact on students’ commutes. When posters asked why Chiba alone was hit so hard, some explained it came down to drainage issues involving Lake Inba and the Tone River system — a background that can’t be chalked up to rainfall totals alone.

God: "How many minutes till the B.O. kicks in?" (a meme format joking that the floodwater's about to start reeking)

Honestly, even if you told me this was AI-generated, I wouldn't be able to tell

Oh right, offshore Chiba is also a hotbed for quakes that can trigger damaging tsunamis

The water won't recede,
the blackouts are dragging on forever,
what is even going on out there
19AnonymousSep 24, 2026 22:26
Actually, why hasn't this area seen damage like this before now?
20AnonymousSep 24, 2026 22:27
TV's actually saying the water level is still rising
Hang in there

Re: #20
Apparently Lake Inba is so massive it's still slowly pulling in water from the surrounding area

The Uchibo Line being down for 3 months is nuts

Kyushu's local lines are about to be fully back up and running, but JR East just doesn't seem motivated, huh?

Re: #51
Will it even wrap up in 3 months?
There are a ton of spots where the tracks got swallowed by landslides

Kisarazu's packed with high schools that have huge enrollments, can they really hold out 3 months without it?

Why is Chiba's flood control so far behind everyone else's?
88AnonymousSep 24, 2026 22:47
Re: #82
Because it's downstream
Water pours in from the entire northern Kanto region, and since the land is flat, there aren't enough routes to drain it out to sea

Re: #82
Because Ibaraki beefed up its flood defenses after the 2019 floods,
the Tone River ended up running at capacity,
which meant Lake Inba could no longer drain into the Tone,
so the rivers around Sakura overflowed instead.
The fallout just got pushed south

Re: #82
If it rained this much anywhere, you'd get the same result
Even Nagoya, which everyone loves to brag about, just got lucky with a lower rainfall total
99AnonymousSep 24, 2026 22:52
Apparently Chiba City got 1,170mm of rain in just the last two months
That already beats its entire annual rainfall total for 2025

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Lake Inba is part of the Tone River watershed, and drainage from the surrounding area ultimately flows into the Tone River. Posters in the thread noted that flood control work on the Ibaraki side, ramped up after Typhoon Hagibis in 2019 (the “Reiwa 1 East Japan Typhoon”), has made the Tone River’s main stream more prone to running high — which in turn has made it harder for Lake Inba to drain. This is difficult to verify, but the theory that upstream countermeasures may be worsening downstream damage in Chiba points to a structural factor that can’t simply be explained away as “there was just more rain this year.” The thread also saw some disagreement over how officials and politicians have responded, but claims that couldn’t be verified are not covered in this article.
