The story

TV personality Shoko Nakagawa posted an update on X about her progress in “Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Bit Fancier Remaster,” but the screenshot she attached turned out to be so “despair-inducing” that it became a hot topic on a thread on 5ch’s Geisports Sokuho+ board. In the thread, users overlaid the posted photo with their own pet cats, gushing “that’s totally my Torneko!”, while others shared “been there” stories about losing hours of progress in an instant in Mystery Dungeon-style games. Some brought up an old incident where she had claimed an iPhone update wiped her Dragon Quest III save data, and the thread drew over 40 replies.

TV personality Shoko Nakagawa updated her X account to share her progress playing the newly released game “Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Bit Fancier Remaster.”

“Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Bit Fancier Remaster” is a remastered version of “Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon,” originally released for the Super Famicom in 1993, and is now available on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. The biggest appeal of the “Mystery Dungeon” format is that the dungeon layout, the monsters that appear, and the items you find all change completely with every attempt, so the adventure stays fresh no matter how many times you dive in.

That's totally my own Torneko right there!

Re: #4
The sync rate's way too high, lol

Hey, don't go stealing my cat!

Re: #4
Stealing's a basic technique in the Mystery Dungeon series, so it's totally fine
5AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:48
Should've saved a screenshot back during the Ramia thing too (referring to Ramia, the flying dragon from Dragon Quest V, from an earlier mishap)

Shokotan's barely posted about her cat since her kid was born (maybe once a month at best) — I wonder if the cat's living at her parents' place now, or if it's still with them but zoned away from the baby
9AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:49
The Switch 2 she got as a pregnancy gift
10AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:50
Shokotan's a big gamer — has she been playing her Switch 2 lately? Or is she too swamped with the kid to manage?
I mean, giving a Switch 2 as a birth gift, what is that, lol

Re: #10
I wouldn't send a gaming console to someone who's about to be run ragged taking care of a baby.
She's already not sleeping enough as it is — if she's got time to game, she'd rather just sleep.

Shoko Nakagawa
After I updated my iPhone, a bunch of stuff got wiped out… nooo
My Dragon Quest III save, right before I was about to beat Baramos, is gone too. I could cry.

Square Enix's response:
No bugs causing save data to be lost have been confirmed at this time.
Normally, an OS update should not cause save data to be lost.

Re: #11
So Square Enix was lying?
12AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:51
Shoko Nakagawa's signature song is 'Flying Humanoid,' right?
14AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:51
At this rate her kid's gonna end up lecturing her someday
16AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:52
Is this actually a screenshot from her own playthrough, I wonder?
32AnonymousSep 21, 2026 19:58
I'm more of a Shiren the Wanderer guy myself

Re: #32
I'm Asuka all the way (likely referencing 'Asuka Ken!', a Mystery Dungeon spin-off)
44AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:12
You sure about that? Couldn't it be someone else's screenshot?
I mean, that cat wasn't even your cat, remember
47AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:15
This is 8 again, replying to Re: #44
Apparently the cats are currently living in a room on the second floor!

Re: #1
Huh? Wait, isn't she supposed to have a Switch 2 — why's she using her phone?
53AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:24
Re: #46
Because it's even more convenient than the Switch.
Same reason people buy a big fancy camera for great shots and still end up only ever using their phone.

Playing Shiren the Wanderer on the Nintendo 64, I made it down to floor 99, grabbed a Scroll of Return to head back, and then a Kappa threw it away and it vanished.
I kept going down floor after floor but that Scroll of Return never showed up again — all that time, down the drain.

Re: #55
lol
Honestly, once you start listing the rage-inducing 'been there' moments from Shiren and Torneko, there's no end to it, lol
62AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:34
The thrill of stealing and the rush of pulling it off is just better in the Shiren series.
Honestly, in the Mystery Dungeon series, the whole appeal kind of comes down to the thrill of theft.
The moment you swipe some ridiculously expensive, powerful item you could never afford, for free — that's pure dopamine.
From early game onward I'm basically just playing the whole thing thinking about how to combine items I've picked up to pull off the next heist.
69AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:46
Re: #62
To be safe, I'd always check the floor's shop first, then steal with a Scroll of Attraction from the stairwell room and head down immediately.
76AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:56
Re: #62
The idea of stealing actually goes all the way back to the original Torneko, but it got scrapped for not fitting Torneko's character as a merchant.
Stealing caught on in Shiren instead, and later got 'reverse-imported' back into the Torneko games.
63AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:37
Didn't she say she was quitting X?
Lied again?
95AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:34
Re: #63
Probably got flamed online, found it a hassle, and just deleted the post itself.
Then acted like it never happened, and here we are.
71AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:48
Huh? Switch content's fair game again now?
74AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:53
You're soft, newbie.
THIS is what a real dead-end looks like.
75AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:54
It's so unfair that dying sends you back to level 1
78AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:59
Re: #75
You get sent back to level 1 even without dying, lol
79AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:03
Oh, Torneko's out on Switch now?
I loved how the music arrangement changed depending on the floor, so maybe I'll pick it up.
93AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:31
Re: #79
It's on Steam too. The hardcore players who've squeezed everything out of Shiren had complaints, but it did get a patch eventually.
80AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:05
I said I'd only played Yangus and the old-school fans laughed me out of the room (Yangus — a Dragon Quest spin-off Mystery Dungeon title)
85AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:16
Re: #80
Yangus was built easy-mode for the soft generation, way too forgiving
100AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:46
Is there even a point to this remaster?
104AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:55
Re: #100
Square Enix's whole business these days is just remasters and remakes

Background and Talking Points

“Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon” is an RPG released in 1993 for the Super Famicom by Chunsoft (now Spike Chunsoft). Its defining feature is that the terrain and enemy placement change randomly every time you descend, and running out of strength sends you back to level 1. This system was later carried over into titles like “Shiren the Wanderer,” and “Mystery Dungeon” became established as a genre name in its own right. In the thread, opinions were split between those asking “is there really a point to releasing this remaster now?” and others reacting with weary resignation that Square Enix has been churning out remasters and remakes nonstop in recent years. Some replies also noted that the “stealing” mechanic was originally rejected for not fitting Torneko’s character, and instead took root first in the later “Shiren the Wanderer” — though it’s worth noting this account comes from fan lore rather than an official statement from the developers.
